Max Hastings introduces All Hell Let Loose

M

a

Our Independent Book of the Month for

October RRP£30.00

Offer Price All Hell Let Loose is, I hope, a £23.00 distillation of all that I have learned about World War II in the course of more than thirty years writing about the subject. It is not ‘military history’ as that term used to be. I have deliberately left out almost all army and divisional numbers and detailed campaign accounts. I have written very little about the ‘big people’, the warlords, but instead focused on the strongest possible images of ordinary people, in uniform and out of it, in battle and otherwise. This is a global portrait, reflecting many years of research in Asia as well as Europe. I would like to think that almost anyone who asks the question ‘what was war like?’ will get an answer, whether for an Asian peasant or US housewife or British pilot or Yugoslav partisan. This is probably my last shot at World War II, for a few years anyway, but it is my biggest and, I hope, my best. Max Hastings ‘I thought you couldn’t possibly tell me anything I didn’t know about the war, but you have come up with an amazing number of surprises.’ Michael Howard, Historian and WWII veteran

Lifeboats occupy a particular place in people’s hearts and there is tremendous affection for the RNLI throughout the whole of the British Isles. No matter if one is on holiday by the coast, or living inland, we are always aware of the work these brave crews do, often in extremely adverse conditions, to rescue others from the sea. Mayday! With archive material, first-person interviews with station commanders and rescuers, plus scientific illustrations and maps, this book is the first to bring together the history and technology, people and crews, triumphs and disasters of the RNLI in one book. Richard Holmes was one of this country’s best-loved military historians and, following his sudden death earlier this year, Soldiers is his final landmark work. From battlefield to barrack-room, this book tells the story of a man as ancient as a redcoat in Charles II’s Tangier garrison and as modern as a gate-guard on Camp Bastion. Richard Holmes conveys how soldiers from as far back as the seventeenth century and soldiers today are united by their common experiences. This is the definitive history of the British soldier and a book that will no doubt be considered so for many years to come.

Short and Sweet Dan Lepard

Le

pa

A letter to indie booksellers from baker and food writer Dan Lepard.

Da

n

In September my baking book Short & Sweet is published. As a baker and food writer I encourage home cooks to seek out local independents: whether that be small flour wind or water mills, specialist ingredient suppliers that stock a rarer selection than any supermarket offers, and – in turn – those maverick entrepreneurs who make shopping a personal and human experience. Like many of you, I’m also an active presence in the online world. So I would like to help you, as independent and skilled booksellers, as much as possible to promote and sell copies of my book this autumn. Though Short & Sweet is very easy to read and follow, with recipes that have been tested by readers of my Guardian newspaper column, and many times in my kitchen, it doesn’t shy away from explaining the more complex and arguably more interesting aspects of home baking. It’s full of advice and tips, aiming to guide the reader into making the best or appropriate choices when baking at home. You offer the same to your customers: a guide to book buying that isn’t simply a glossy frontage but a personal experience based on experience and knowledge. That fact needs to be the first thought when any potential reader is choosing whether to go online or local when they buy their books, and I want to help get that message across.

Around publication I will be busy talking to the food media about the book, but I’d love to come and visit some of you. So if you have the resources to put on a good event that’s right for your customers and for my baking experience, please pitch your ideas to my publicist by emailing rebecca.mcewan@ harpercollins.co.uk. I’m very open to more ideas from you, but first I just wanted to make contact ahead of publication to see how we can help you. Short & Sweet is a brilliant book that I’m very proud of and I hope it will be a favourite of yours too. Best wishes, Dan Lepard

Diane’s mother suffered from Alzheimer’s, and during the fifteen-year-long battle with this heartbreaking and debilitating disease, she began to reflect on both of their lives – their commonalities and their differences, the dreams they each realized and the dreams they deferred. Our Independent Book of the Month for

September RRP£16.99 Offer Price £12.99

The Genius in my Basement Alexander Masters By the author of Stuart: A Life Backwards Simon Philips Norton, the subject of The Genius in my Basement, is not mad – not by a long shot – but he is certainly mixed up. At one time he was considered one of the greatest prodigies of contemporary mathematics but these days he spends most of his time colouring in road atlases, tracing the paths of bus routes he has travelled upon all over the country, sheltering amongst a tower of unwashed pans and eating smoked kippers straight from a tin in his ‘messy’ (as Simon calls it) basement flat in Cambridge. In The Genius in my Basement, Alexander Masters offers a tender, humorous and intimate portrait of genius at its most ordinary and at its most blurred. He enters us into the extraordinary life of one of the would-be contenders – an everyday mastermind – and in doing so, reveals the cruel burdens, as well as the glorious rewards, of a life marked by brilliance.

Several days before Christmas 2003, Joan Didion’s only daughter, Quintana, fell seriously ill. In 2010, Didion marked the sixth anniversary of her daughter’s death. Recently widowed, and becoming increasingly frail, Blue Nights is Didion’s attempt to understand our deepest fears, and our inadequate adjustments to ageing. A profound, poetic and powerful book about motherhood and the fierce way in which we continue to exalt and nurture our children – even if they only live on in memory – Blue Nights is an intensely personal, and yet strangely universal account of how we love. It is both groundbreaking and a culmination of a stunning career. The publication of Blue Nights will be backed by a major publicity campaign.

I, Partridge: We Need to Talk About Alan Alan Partridge Journalist, presenter, broadcaster, husband, father, and vigorous all-rounder, Alan Gordon Partridge is the best, and best-loved, radio presenter in the region. Alan’s big break came with his primetime BBC chat show Knowing Me, Knowing You but sadly, due to declining ratings and a single catastrophic hitch (the killing of a guest on air), Alan’s show was cancelled. In this compelling memoir, written entirely in his own words, Alan speaks touchingly about the time he got locked in the boot of a Rover 800, and relives the painful moment when unsold copies of his first autobiography, Bouncing Back, were pulped like ‘word porridge’. A literary tour de force, I, Partridge: We Need to Talk About Alan charts the incredible journey of one of our greatest broadcasters.

A heart-warming testimony to the power of love

Les Très Riches Heures de Mrs Mole Ronald Searle Patrick Janson-Smith, Publisher at Blue Door, introduces Les Très Riches Heures de Mrs Mole This is a jewel of a book about which I feel totally and utterly passionate. Not only is 91-year-old Ronald Searle one of my all-time heroes (to understand why, you have only to read To the Kwai and Back, his astonishing, intensely moving account of life behind the wires of a Japanese POW Camp, still in print with Souvenir Press. Then there’s Molesworth and St Trinian’s and the cats etc. etc..), but the story behind Les Très Riches Heures de Mrs Mole brings tears to my eyes every time I think about its provenance. As you will discover, it is a love story, of epic proportions. Of all the books I have published at Blue Door over the past two years, this is, unquestionably, the one of which I am most proud.

Ingenious in its construction, witty in its narration, panoramic in its breadth, One on One is a wholly original book comprising 101 chance meetings, juxtaposing the famous and the infamous, the artistic and the philistine, the pompous and the comical, the snobbish and the vulgar. One on One examines the curious nature of different types of meeting, from the oddity of encounters with the Royal Family (who start giggling during a recital by TS Eliot) to those often perilous meetings between old and young (Mark Twain terrifying Rudyard Kipling). Each piece is 1,001 words long, with a time span stretching from the 19th century to the 21st. Craig Brown is widely acknowledged as Britain’s funniest writer. Like many of you I read Andrew Kaufman’s debut, All My Friends are Superheroes, and really loved it. I raved about it on my blog and the publisher used a quote from my review on their reprint of the book. When Andrew came over to the UK last year he was kind enough to be a guest at the Firestation Book Swap event I run each month in my hometown of Windsor. I thought we had got on well but I had no idea how well until I was contacted by his agent asking me if I would be interested in publishing his new book, The Tiny Wife. I jumped at the chance and couldn’t believe my luck when I read the manuscript. It was every bit as good as Superheroes and my mind was racing with ideas of how best to publish it. It tells the story of an unusual bank robbery in Toronto. Instead of stealing money, the thief takes items of sentimental value from every person in the bank. After the robbery, strange things start to happen to the victims. One woman wakes up to find that her husband has turned into a snowman, another discovers that his baby has, well, begun to poo money, and the narrator’s wife starts to shrink. It is weird and wonderful and scary and romantic and I really hope you like it, especially as booksellers have been responsible for so much of the success of Superheroes. My fingers are crossed that you will want to recommend this to your customers in the same way.

Every so often a novel comes along that, without even trying, makes everyone working on it determined to make that book be read by as many people as possible. For us, two years ago that book was Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall; last year it was Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom. With both of those books there was a feeling that everyone should read them; not just us in the publishing house, or those in the wider book trade, but everyone, and it was with that belief that those books were published. This year, that book is Jeffrey Eugenides’ The Marriage Plot. For fans of Eugenides – of whom there are many, after the huge success of his previous book, Middlesex, and his first book, The Virgin Suicides – it is everything they could have hoped for; very different from those first two, but still unmistakeably him. But it is also very much a book for those who haven’t read him, or even heard of him before: a novel that genuinely sweeps you up; makes you laugh and makes you cry; makes you feel deeply for these three characters – Madeleine and her two suitors, Leonard and Mitchell – as they stumble through college and their first year afterwards, making their choices and making their mistakes, but fundamentally, and finally, coming to realise who they are. It is a real joy of a book, and that is not something it’s often possible to say. I hope you will read it, and POS love it as much as we do.

Behind the net curtains of homes across the country there are grandmas. At this very moment they could be drinking tea, munching on a chocolate digestive or, in some cases, even knitting. For Ben however, his impression of his granny as a scrabble playing-cabbage soup eating-most boringest grandma ever is going to change… because what Ben doesn’t know about his grandma is that she was once an international jewel thief with her eyes on the crown jewels. With him there to help her she just might succeed. This new book from David Walliams has all the hallmarks of his previous bestsellers. Filled with prejudice and acceptance, this hilarious novel provides a moving tale from a critically acclaimed author.

I read The Name of the Star over a weekend, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s full of humour, yet is quite a good supernatural thriller, drawing in various strands of history in the form of Jack the Ripper copycat murders. The heroine, an American girl who has come to London to study, is a very believable and fun character, as she deals with misunderstandings resulting from the AmericanBritish divide in culture and language. After a neardeath experience, Rory finds she can see ghosts, and discovers the Secret Ghost Police. Trying to solve the murders, she is involved in lots of adventures around London, including some in disused underground stations. The Name of the Star is interesting, witty and different and it could be a winner. Move over werewolves and vampires, it’s time for the Secret Ghost Police!
