a magnum opus for our morally complex times A grand story of youthful idealism, extreme fidelity, and murder, from the author of The Corrections. Young Pip Tyler doesn’t know who she is. She knows that her real name is Purity, that she’s saddled with $130,000 in student debt, and that her relationship with her mother – her only family – is hazardous. A glancing encounter with a German peace activist leads Pip to an internship in South America with the Sunlight Project, an organisation that traffics in all the secrets of the world – including, Pip hopes, the secret of her origins. The most daring and penetrating book yet by one of the major writers of our time.

Two possible candidates emerge from the recent intake of MPs: David Petrie, a self-made Scot with a working-class background and a troubled personal history; and Caroline Phillips, a highflying Londoner whose complicated private life could be either her greatest handicap, or her greatest asset.

The Labour Party has unexpectedly won a narrow majority in the 2018 general election. But the new government is weak and divided, its unpopular leader embattled in the House of Commons. club Collins’ Crime Club was founded in 1930 by the late Sir William Collins. Collins were known already for their crime fiction – they already published Agatha Christie – and the new imprint was intended to emphasise a significant part of the list. Beginning with three books a month, Crime Club (which was never a book club, though it owed its name to the popularity of the clubs at that time) ran continuously until 1994, publishing more than 2,000 original crime novels and making household names of authors including J. Jefferson Farjeon, Philip MacDonald, Freeman Wills Crofts, Anthony Gilbert, Rex Stout, Ngaio Marsh, Julian Symons, H. R. F. Keating and Reginald Hill. Now, after a 21-year break, the ‘hooded gunman’ of the Collins Crime Club logo has returned, and we are delighted to share with you some of the books that will be appearing in the list.

The world’s unending love affair with Sherlock Holmes is set to continue in this new adventure by author Bonnie MacBird. Written in the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the father of detective fiction, we see the iconic duo travelling from London to Paris and the icy wilds of Lancashire in a case which tests Watson’s friendship and the fragility of Sherlock Holmes’ own artistic nature to the limits.

Celebrating

T

20 years of Voyager

he HarperVoyager story is a long one – in fact, it doesn’t start where Voyager started, it begins way back in 1984 when I started at a small gentleman publisher called George Allen & Unwin. I was a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, became the editor for the Tolkien books and soon began to build a fantasy list. When HarperCollins bought Unwin we decided that we needed a name that would encompass this new, big, diverse list which included the backlists of Isaac Asimov, Philip K Dick and books by all sorts of other people. So I pulled together the marketing team, the sales team and the editorial team and we sat down to debate what this genre is all about. Our conclusion of course was that science fiction and fantasy is all about travelling in the imagination – readers are ‘voyagers’ in the imagination – and that is how the Voyager name came to be.

In 2015 we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the launch of the HarperVoyager list. I can’t look into a crystal ball and see the future ahead for us in the next 20 years but following the incredible success of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series I now feel that a floodgate has been opened and that many more people who would never have regarded themselves as science fiction and fantasy readers are now aware of the riches that they can find in this area. And 2015 is an incredible year for publishing at Voyager with the launch of three amazingly talented debut writers – Francesca Haig, Sabaa Tahir and Peter Newman, and the release of new books from five blockbuster authors – Joe Abercrombie, Robin Hobb, Peter V Brett, Mark Lawrence and George R.R. Martin. Jane Johnson HarperVoyager Publishing Director

Featuring more than 160 illustrations by Gary Gianni, one of the finest fantasy artists of our time, this beautiful volume will transport readers to the world of the Seven Kingdoms in an age of bygone chivalry. 6 oct £20, HB 9780007507672 HarperVoyager

For over a hundred years, ‘the mystery of Jack The Ripper’ has been a source of unparalleled fascination and horror they all love jack: busting the ripper ---

bruce robinson In They All Love Jack, the award-winning film director and screenwriter Bruce Robinson exposes the cover-up that enabled one of history’s most notorious serial killers to remain at large. More than twelve years in the writing, this is much more than a radical reinterpretation of the Jack the Ripper legend, and an enthralling hunt for the killer. A literary high-wire act reminiscent of Tom Wolfe or Hunter S. Thompson, They All Love Jack is an expressionistic journey through the cesspools of late-Victorian society, a phantasmagoria of highly placed villains, hypocrites and institutionalised corruption. 6 oct £25, hB 9780007548873 4th Estate

the untold story of the

‘I’m amazed how many surprises I found in the course of researching this book and maybe you will in reading it.’

Second World War In The Secret War, Max Hastings presents a worldwide cast of characters and some extraordinary sagas of intelligence and Resistance, to create a new perspective on the greatest conflict in history. Here are not only Alan Turing and the codebreaking geniuses of Bletchley Park, but also their German counterparts, who achieved their own triumphs against the Allies. Hastings plots the fabulous espionage networks created by the Soviet Union in Germany and Japan, Britain and America, and explores the puzzle of why Stalin so often spurned his agents, who reported from the heart of the Axis war machine. The Secret War links tales of high courage ashore, at sea and in the air to the work of the brilliant ‘boffins’ at home, battling the enemy’s technology. Most of the strivings, adventures and sacrifices of spies, Resistance, Special Forces and even of the codebreakers were wasted, Hastings says, but a fraction was so priceless that no nation grudged lives and treasure spent in the pursuit of jewels of knowledge. The book tells stories of high policy and human drama, mingled in the fashion that has made international bestsellers of Max Hastings’ previous histories, this time illuminating the fantastic machinations of secret war.

Ted Hughes, Poet Laureate, was one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. With an equal gift for poetry and prose, he had a magnetic personality and an insatiable appetite for friendship, for love and for life. But he attracted more scandal than any poet since Lord Byron.

‘The purpose of a literary biography is to send readers back to the original writings of the subject, to give the work a new lease of life.’ Jonathan Bate

Renowned scholar Sir Jonathan Bate has spent five years in his archives, unearthing a wealth of new material. His book offers for the first time the full story of Ted Hughes’s life as it was lived, remembered and reshaped in his art. It is a book that honours, though not uncritically, Ted Hughes’s poetry and the art of lifewriting, approached by his biographer with an honesty answerable to Hughes’s own. This major new biography is published to coincide with National Poetry Day. Jonathan Bate’s 90 minute film on Ted Hughes for BBC2 will also air on the same day.

mr. Cleghorn’s Seal

an exquisite new story to delight readers young and old, from Judith Kerr

Inspired by a true story about her father, Alfred Kerr, and the seal pup he took home one day, Mister Cleghorn’s Seal tells the life-affirming tale of Mr Cleghorn who, on a visit to the seaside, rescues a seal pup named Charlie. A charmingly chaotic adventure ensues and with Judith’s signature wit, warmth and keen eye for the absurd, she reminds us all that you’re never too old for a brand new life filled with love and laughter. Included in the book is an afterword from Judith, recounting the true story that inspired the tale.

Mister Cleghorn’s Seal will be the must-have gift for all Judith Kerr fans this autumn, delighting readers young and old. Editions will include a lavish, fully-illustrated hardback; a deluxe slipcased collector’s edition with artwork print and an audio dramatisation voiced by awardwinning British actor Bill Nighy, which also includes Judith’s afterword, read by Judith herself.

HarperCollins Field Sales team are increasingly using the Edelweiss application to share new title information and suggested backlist with independent booksellers. Working in conjunction with Patrick Neale, we are developing a pilot scheme in the UK and are keen to hear from independent booksellers who would like to take part – contact us at independentthinking@harpercollins.co.uk

‘To die for’ Daily Mail

Independent Bookseller Patrick Neale introduces Edelweiss… Having visited numerous bookshops in the United States I became aware of the amazing collaborative tools Above the Treeline and Edelweiss. Most recently, in Seattle, I witnessed the passion that both booksellers and publisher reps have for Edelweiss as a book ordering tool and information highway. I have been fortunate enough to become the UK Ambassador for Treeline and Edelweiss. I’m keen to get these systems running as successfully as they are in the USA as soon as is humanly possible. To that end, it would be brilliant to get a number of shops working with the forward thinking team at HarperCollins to get a pilot scheme running. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. E: patrick@abovethetreeline.com | T: 07833332674
