Brilliant writing with a broad reach Finding new voices and new stories. How we cast our net and what we found. This time of year gives the perfect excuse to make a cup of tea and settle down with a fantastic book. And we really do have something to suit every mood: a stunning imagining of the early life of one of England’s greatest artists, a powerful revenge story set in the Rocky Mountains; a luminous debut about the bonds of family and friendship; and a witty and wise story of a spirited Russian babushka and her three-legged dog that came to us through our open submissions period. When we decided to open our doors to unagented submissions of literary novels for a

limited two-week period in April last year, we knew we’d get a direct line to the writers of today. When you spit out your tea laughing and well up all in the space of the first ten pages of a novel, you know you’re onto a good thing. Galina Petrovna’s Three-Legged Dog Story is such a find, as is Andrea Bennett, its author. Borough is still in its infancy and without your support we would be nowhere. Thank you so much for accompanying us on our journey this far – here’s to a long and happy literary life together. Katie, Cassie and Charlotte The Borough Press editors @boroughpress

CLAIRE LOWDON In this Vanity Fair for our times, Claire Lowdon has captured the foibles, hopes and difficulties of a certain strata of young London today better than any before her. With sharp, satirical humour, unparalleled social observation and great empathy, Lowdon explores the nature of love and young people in crisis. She is daringly – even radically – honest about the temptations and tragedies of the generation of young Londoners today – who are often having much less fun than it seems. 4 JUN £14.99, HB 978-0-00-810217-3 4TH ESTATE

Three women bound by the burdens and blessings bestowed by blood. Lettice Franklin, 4th Estate Assistant Editor, introduces A Reunion of Ghosts. A Reunion of Ghosts is a totally unique novel and the saga of a totally unique family. Every generation of Alter’s since WWI has been plagued by suicide. And now Lady, Vee and Delph, all middle aged, have decided to follow suit. This is – if you like – ‘the spinster suicides’.

‘In this context, I’m a rookie once more.’ Seni Glaister tells us about her debut novel, The Museum of Things Left Behind.

I’ve been a bookseller for the last 26 years and have surrounded myself with stories for a lot longer than that. I know how lucky I am to get so much pleasure from my work – I spend each day reading books, discovering books, buying and selling books and talking about books with a vast number of people I greatly admire. But no amount of immersion in the bookselling industry could possibly have prepared me for the experience of seeing my first novel published and, however comfortable I am in the bookselling world, I know with nerve-tingling certainty, in this context, I’m a rookie once more. I have kept the fact that I’ve been writing this book to myself and I expect I only found the courage to finish it buried deeply in the certain knowledge that I would never have the courage to submit it. In the end, I wasn’t terribly courageous, I submitted it anonymously. And I could not have been more overjoyed (or relieved) to find it landing well. Finding a home at 4th Estate, an imprint I have always loved and respected, was beyond my wildest dreams. The Museum of Things Left Behind is a story set in the fictional country of Vallerosa. Vallerosa is a country that bothers little with money, but greatly with values. Community has a more profound impact on society than government. It is a story about politics, bureaucracy, the frustrations of hierarchy and the nonsense of economics.

But much more than that it is a comic tale about purpose, women, the passage of time and, yes, tea. Vallerosa is a utopia of sorts, but an imperfect one. (I now realise that my personal utopia could never be perfect, it would need to present a challenge of some sort because how else could you find a sense of purpose if you don’t have something useful to contribute?) I have really enjoyed watching people react to the book. I am so glad when readers respond well to the characters in the novel but I think I’m at my happiest when I hear people say they want to move to Vallerosa.

NEW FICTION: PEN PUSHERS

‘More writers should write in bookshops.’ Ian Sansom introduces the latest in his County Guides series: Death in Devon.

Dickens had his chalet. Roald Dahl had his shed. Maya Angelou, hotel rooms. Edith Sitwell wrote in bed. All of my books have been written nowhere in particular, and in transit, between jobs and very late at night. But my new novel! My new novel, Death in Devon, was written in an actual office! In a bookshop! Or to be more precise, in an actual office above a bookshop. My friend David Torrans runs the famous No Alibis Bookshop at 83 Botanic Avenue, Belfast. Unable to find the time or the peace and quiet at home to be able to write, I asked if David might let me use the storeroom above the shop. The room is and was a mess - it’s a bookshop storeroom, and you know what they’re like. Strip lights. Peeling wallpaper. A thin grey filthy carpet. Cracks in the wall that are large enough to keep your pencils in. I love it. Death in Devon is the second book in The County Guides series of novels – in which Spanish Civil War veteran Stephen Sefton sets off with ‘The People’s Professor’ Swanton Morley and Morley’s untamable daughter Miriam to solve crimes and confront the bigotries and prejudices of 1930s England. Staring out of the high window above the bookshop at Belfast’s rain-soaked streets I

imagined Sefton and Morley and Miriam setting off once again in their white Lagonda, while Miriam drives and Sefton despairs of the entire enterprise. In Devon the doughty trio enjoy cream teas and encounter a group of surfing Satanists. More writers should write in bookshops. I could set up shop in a bookshop in every county. Bookshops, after all, are a writer’s natural habitat. Go on. Take us in. Give us house room.

‘I wanted to find the real Eliza Doolittle.’ Hazel Gaynor introduces A Memory of Violets and explains how her research shaped the novel.

In some ways, my idea for this book started in 1988 when I played the role of Eliza Doolittle in the school production of My Fair Lady. I was seventeen and totally captivated by this wonderful character and by London at the turn of the century. Fifteen years later, I started to scribble notes and ideas for a novel based around the lives of London’s flower sellers. I wanted to find the real Eliza Doolittle, and understand the circumstances surrounding the lives of the young women who sold flowers and watercress on the streets. When I came across the story of John Groom and his involvement with the flower sellers, I was astonished. I hadn’t appreciated just how many young children were selling flowers on the streets, or that many of them were orphaned, blind or physically afflicted in some way. Discovering these lost voices from the past was a novelist’s dream and I knew immediately that I wanted to tell their story. Having blended fact and fiction in my debut novel, The Girl Who Came Home (set around the sinking of RMS Titanic), I naturally approached A Memory of Violets in a similar way, retelling the story of London’s flower girls through my fictional interpretation of actual events. From newspaper reports, photographs,

ledgers, personal letters and other effects from the period, I developed a real sense of these young girls and women and what it meant to them to have been given an opportunity to improve their circumstances. I’m very excited to publish A Memory of Violets, and hope that the lives of these fascinating individuals – and their forgotten stories – will bloom and flourish again as the reader turns the page.

HarperCollins Children’s Books biggest launch of 2015! Author Shane Hegarty introduces his richly imagined world, told with an ironic voice that recalls Douglas Adams. Darkmouth is the story of Finn, a boy who lives in the last town on earth where Legends and Myths still invade. Finn is the only child of the last Legend Hunter and it is up to Finn to keep both the town and the world safe. The only problem, unfortunately, is that Finn is not very good at it. While I love fantasy, adventure and humour, in Darkmouth you’ll also find a very recognisable story of what it is like to be a 12 year old who doesn’t entirely know his place in the world but is being pushed into a very particular role, one which just happens to involve dressing up in armour, grabbing very dangerous weapons and fighting very big monsters…

It’s About Love is the second YA novel one of the UK’s most acclaimed spoken-word artists, Steven Camden. It’s a story about family, friendship, violence, revenge and… love. Here, Steven tells us why he writes for teenagers: As I moved into my teens, two thoughts were constantly at war in my head: 1: That I would never do anything 2: That I could do anything I wanted I find that writing gives weight to the punches of positive thought number 2 and, for some reason, writing teenage characters seems to imbue it with some kind of mixed martial arts training. I’m fascinated by the idea of ‘where’, or rather ‘who’, home is. It’s About Love was born of those questions and a celebration of the messy answers.

I wrote it for my sixteen year old self as I think finding a character like Luke would’ve helped thought number 2 win the fight. At least for a while.

A frank, heartbreaking story showing what it means to die before your time. Kate Gross’s battle with cancer ended on Christmas Day 2014. Ambitious and talented, Kate Gross worked at Number 10 Downing Street whilst only in her twenties. At 30, she was CEO of a charity working with fragile democracies in Africa. But aged 34, Kate was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer. Once terminal, it was clear that she would die before her children finished primary school. She began to write as a gift to herself, a reminder that she could create even as her body tried to self-destruct. Her book is not a conventional cancer memoir; nor is it filled with medical jargon or misery. Instead, it is Kate’s powerful attempt to make sense of the woman who has emerged in this strange, lucid final chunk of life. LATE FRAGMENTS: EVERYTHING I WANT TO TELL YOU (ABOUT THIS MAGNIFICENT LIFE) KATE GROSS OUT NOW £14.99, HB 978-0-00-810345-3 WILLIAM COLLINS

‘Praising the quality of her all too short life is easy, making sense of the injustice of her death is harder. No one conquers death. But you can achieve a certain triumph over it. This Kate did, and how she did it is a lesson for those of us who knew her well and those of you who never knew her at all.

Kate Gross

Late Fragments is a gem – a wonderful, uplifting reflection on how to die and how to live. It is sad because of the context in which it is written; but there is nothing tragic about its message, which is a happy one, full of life’s possibilities not it’s limitations.’ Former Prime Minister, Tony Blair

Crane traces the endless, overlapping connections between people’s lives, from private tragedies, disappointed political hopes, and public discontents to public celebrations and monuments. It answers Wellington’s call as he rallied his troops to ‘Think what England is thinking of us now.’ 29 JAN £20, HB 978-0-00-735836-6 WILLIAM COLLINS

SPRING/SUMMER 2015 P32-33

A warm-hearted history of Britain’s countryside during World War Two. Filled with evacuees, Land Girls, stories of rationing and the Home Guard. World War Two dragged rural communities out of their former environment and changed their lives forever. Whilst urban people were liable to have their homes destroyed by bombs, rural folk had their territory invaded: evacuee children were dumped on them by the thousand, land was arbitrarily taken for military use and prisoner-of-war camps brought captured enemy to close quarters. The results often involved severe clashes of culture and a remarkable effort of resourcefulness.

Drawing on anecdotes from diaries, letters, official records and interviews, Duff Hart-Davis conveys the strangeness of the changes wrought in Britain by these odd combinations of hardship and farce. Nostalgic, amusing and filled with warm human detail, Our Land at War is a living history. OUR LAND AT WAR DUFF HART-DAVIS 7 MAY £20, HB 978-0-00-751653-7 WILLIAM COLLINS

UNIVERSAL MAN: THE SEVEN LIVES OF JOHN MAYNARD KEYNES ---

RICHARD DAVENPORT-HINES John Maynard Keynes is the man who saved Britain from financial crisis not once but twice – over the course of two World Wars. He remains a highly influential figure, nearly 70 years after his death. But who was he? In this entertaining biography, the bestselling author of An English Affair, Richard Davenport-Hines, gives us the man behind the economics: the connoisseur, intellectual, public official and statesman who was equally at ease socialising with the Bloomsbury Group as he was persuading prime ministers and presidents. 12 MAR £18.99, HB 978-0-00-751980-4 WILLIAM COLLINS

SPRING/SUMMER 2015 P34-35

These are the quintessential American pancakes you’d get in any diner worth its salt in the USA. Fluffy and airy, they’re perfect for soaking up maple syrup. Along with eggs over easy and crispy bacon, no American breakfast is complete without them. 1. To make the pancakes, melt the butter in the microwave or in a small saucepan on the stove and set aside to cool briefly. 2. In a large bowl, whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt together by hand. 3. In a separate bowl, whisk the buttermilk and eggs. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and whisk gently by hand until the dry ingredients are almost incorporated; stop before the batter is evenly mixed – it should be lumpy. Fold in the blueberries, if using, but don’t overmix. 4. Add the cooled melted butter and mix just until the batter is incorporated – it will still be lumpy. Let the batter rest while you heat a non-stick frying pan on a low heat. 5. To make your first pancake, add a little vegetable oil to the pan so it doesn’t stick, then spoon 4 tablespoons of the batter into the pan. Let the pancake cook, undisturbed, for 1–2 minutes until bubbles rise to the surface and the edges look dry. At that point, lift the underside up with a spatula to make sure it’s nicely browned and flip over. Continue to cook for about 1 minute more until the second side is also nicely browned. Remove from the pan and place in a warm oven while you cook the rest of the pancakes. Once all the pancakes are cooked, serve with maple syrup or lemon curd, if you like.
