Machu Picchu: 100 Years Later July 16–26, 2011

Chris Heaney Chris Heaney is a writer and Harrington Doctoral Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin, where he lectures on, among other subjects, the history of indigenous peoples in the Americas. A Yale graduate with a degree in Latin American Studies, he worked as a journalist for several years and contributed to the oral history project StoryCorps. A Fulbright Fellowship took him to Peru to continue his undergraduate research on the explorer Hiram Bingham and the excavation of Machu Picchu. The year of research in Cuzco and Lima produced many articles and, ultimately, Cradle of Gold: The Story of Hiram Bingham, a Real-Life Indiana Jones, and the Search for Machu Picchu, his first book.

Perched high in the Peruvian Andes is a legendary Inca city that escaped the notice of the conquistadores in the 1500s and remained shrouded by the jungle for three centuries. Then, in July 1911, American historian Hiram Bingham was led to the largely forgotten site by Melchor Arteaga, and the eyes of the world were soon riveted on this once-lost Inca city. Celebrate the centennial of Machu Picchu’s rediscovery in the company of Chris Heaney, author of the new book on Bingham, Cradle of Gold. Immerse yourself in the historical and cultural riches of Lima’s colonial center; the fine collections of Pre-Columbian artifacts at the National Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology; and the achievements of Peru’s early inhabitants at archaeological sites around Cuzco and in the Urubamba Valley. And in specially arranged discussions with historians, Peruvian officials, and preservationists, discover what lies in store for this icon of Inca supremacy.
