welcome to hendersonville with Michelle Owens Michelle Owens Executive Director
On behalf of our many wonderful partners in the tourism industry, I invite everyone to visit this welcoming place we call home. My wish for you is to experience the special feeling of Hendersonville, just like I did during my first visit to summer camp here.
My initial trip to Hendersonville had a lot in common with many first-time visitors. It took place in summer. It lasted exactly six days. It involved outdoor activities and sleeping in cabins. And it began a lifelong love affair with these Blue Ridge Mountains. This was summer camp in the 1980s, and I was a youngster seeking new adventures and discovering mountain moments. For as long as people can remember, Hendersonville has drawn visitors from near and far, and during that week, I learned why. It’s that simple feeling of being at home, even in a place you’ve never visited before. Eventually, my title went from camper to camp counselor. Then came life’s next phases: college, family and career. Right now, I’m particularly excited about that last part because you’re reading my first visitors guide as executive director of the Henderson County Tourism Development Authority. In this role, I’m privileged to share my passion for visiting Hendersonville, Flat Rock, Mills River, Etowah, Fletcher and the many friendly communities of Henderson County – it's a passion all of us share. I guess you could say my unofficial title is CIO: Chief Invitation Officer. I love inviting people to seek new adventures, to create mountain moments — those memories I’ve been fortunate to make here over the years: hiking mountain trails; sleeping in cozy cabins; picking sweet, crisp apples in autumn; enjoying

favorite meals in restaurants; shopping for handmade treasures; and just listening: to poetry at the Carl Sandburg Home, to cool water rushing over river rocks, to the famous talking trees at Holmes Educational State Forest, to my children laughing on rides at the North Carolina Apple Festival, and to countless stories around the campfire. As you take time to read through this visitors guide, I truly hope it inspires you to visit the Hendersonville area. You will notice a few themes popping up again and again: family fun, outdoor adventure, handcrafted treasures, amazing views, farm-to-table goodness and one of the best main streets in America. No visit to the North Carolina mountains is complete without trails, and we have an abundance. Hiking trails, mountain biking trails, craft beverage trails, orchard trails and art trails. The Hendersonville Cheers! Trail showcases a collection of more than two dozen wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries located in Henderson County. We give a special shout-out to our vineyards for earning recognition as an American Viticultural Area (AVA). This federal designation is reserved for top wineproducing regions in the U.S., and the seven wineries (and growing) in our Crest of the Blue Ridge AVA consistently produce award-winning wines to be enjoyed amidst our spectacular scenery.

DOWNTOWN HENDERSONVILLE
main street hendersonville: best of the blue ridge The pedestrian-friendly Main Street that Hendersonville visitors enjoy today likely would have never come into existence if not for a quirky provision back in 1841. At that time, Judge Mitchell King donated land from his summer estate to establish the town, but he did so with a decree that Main Street be 100 feet wide. The reasoning for this was to allow a carriage pulled by four horses to turn around in the street without backing up. Nearly two centuries later, residents and tourists reap the benefits of that stipulation on a daily basis. The road’s abundant width allowed for the redesign of Main Street in 1977 into the curvilinear streetscape that now exists. Hendersonville’s downtown is a destination: spacious and roomy, filled with flowering brick planters, park benches, shade trees and wide sidewalks that accommodate outdoor dining and art installations like the Bearfootin’ Art Walk. Visitors are often surprised to find Aquarium & Shark Lab by Team ECCO. North Carolina’s first inland aquarium is home to a 2,000-gallon shark study tank where visitors watch daily shark feedings. More than 275 fish, invertebrates, reptiles and salamanders call the aquarium home. The aptly named Hands On! Children’s Museum on Main Street is an interactive attraction for learning. The museum embraces STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) and recently expanded to include the People’s Museum, which celebrates the history and culture of People of Color and is designed for both youth and adult learners. For a true Western North Carolina experience, stop by Mast General Store.

The two-story retailer features clothing, outdoor gear, gift items, home decor and barrels filled with assorted candies. Mast General Store is a Carolina icon. Originally a small country store selling daily necessities, it has grown to several locations, always in historic buildings. The Hendersonville store lovingly occupies the 1905 Syndicate Building. Visitors fall “inn love” with downtown Hendersonville at a handful of historic and well-maintained bed-and-breakfast inns. On North Main Street, just steps from the central business district, a pair of three-story inns, the 1898 Waverly Inn and Charleston Inn, sit side by side. The Henderson offers guest rooms and fine dining one block west of Main Street. And a few blocks farther afield, the Elizabeth Leigh Inn, built in 1893, is tucked into a peaceful, residential street with flowering gardens.
DOWNTOWN PARKING There are plenty of downtown parking options, including street, surface lots and a deck, most of which, including on-street parking, is metered. Visitor parking is available at the Welcome Center. Be sure to keep the following in mind for a stressfree parking experience: • Parking spaces with a reserved sign or business name sign are NOT public parking. These spaces have been leased exclusively by individuals and are not available for public use at any time unless otherwise posted at the parking space. • If you find yourself in an area where parking requires payment, consider downloading the ParkMobile app in the App Store or Google Play.
Pedaling for Pints in Downtown On your next trip to Hendersonville, hop aboard the HVL Pedal & Brews pubcycle for a fun-filled cruise to downtown breweries and taprooms. The mobile pub has 10 pedaling seats, four non-pedaling seats and one conductor, who sits in the center. An electric motor ensures riders don’t have to pedal hard. The pubcycle’s roof allows for fun, rain or shine. Music is a must on the ride, and passersby often smile, wave and dance along. HVL Pedal & Brews is headquartered at Blue Ridge Beer Garden on South Church Street, one block off Main Street.
Battery Boost The city of Hendersonville has 12 public charging station ports (Level 2 and Level 3) within 10 miles. All of the ports are Level 2 charging ports, and 66% of the ports offer free charges for your electric car.

mountain moment with scott treadway Performer/Producer at Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theatre of North Carolina Scott Treadway grew up in Tennessee, but he began spending summers in Hendersonville as a child, visiting his Aunt Louise. His first introduction to Flat Rock Playhouse was an apprenticeship in 1984. Since then, Scott has performed in 145 productions across 39 seasons and directed 14 shows. Today, theater patrons scan the program to see which character will benefit from Scott’s quick wit and enthusiasm. Flat Rock Playhouse traces its roots to a traveling troupe of performers known as the Vagabond Players. In 1952, the troupe purchased a piece of property, and a rented big top tent became the first Flat Rock Playhouse. In 1961, the North Carolina General Assembly designated Flat Rock Playhouse as the State Theatre of North Carolina. The playhouse is now a year-round arts hub for Broadway musicals, comedy, drama and theater for young audiences, as well as the Music on the Rock concert series. Q: How did you first get interested in entertaining/theater? A: When I was 6, I got puppets for Christmas. I had a sister who had severe cerebral palsy. I did puppet shows for her. She couldn’t walk or talk, but she could laugh. Her laugh was beautiful, and I was addicted from that point on. I also spent my weeks waiting for Saturday night at 10 p.m. — “The Carol Burnett Show.” Q: What was your first role at the playhouse?
Flat Rock Playhouse

A: I did ensemble roles prior, but my first “real” role was Eugene in “Look
Homeward, Angel” in 1985. It was and still is one of the most important roles for me. The playhouse performed the show annually for years. I was given the honor of playing the Thomas Wolfe role in the final production. Q: One thing many people don’t realize about the playhouse is that it creates every show from the ground up — sets, costumes, music, sometimes even the scripts/plays themselves. What is the benefit to you as a performer of this all-inclusive approach? What is the benefit to attendees? A: Theater is an art form where every production is blessed by each theater’s personal artistic interpretation and approach. When the entire team gets to formulate the role, environment, interpretation, we all feel as if we are building our own unique show. As for the audience, they benefit by seeing the same show in different venues and enjoying what could be a completely different interpretation from one theater’s production to another.
Scott's Top 5 Hendersonville recommendations: » Hike Big Glassy at Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. It’s my favorite spot on earth. » Get a “sammich” at Three Chopt in downtown Hendersonville. » Stroll down our glorious Hendersonville Main Street. I just love it. » Partake of Rainbow Row in Flat Rock and get the best barbecue anywhere at Hubba Hubba Smokehouse. » Pick apples at one of our wonderful apple orchards.
Q: What has kept you at the playhouse instead of leaving for a bigger stage somewhere else? A: I’m disinterested in fame or “the big time.” I like my little life with my kid, my house and animals, and my yard. I admire Broadway performers so much, but I prefer these mountains, this lifestyle and most importantly this family. I’m a mountain boy, always have been, always will be.

mountain moment with kym brown Owner of A Southern Cup Fine Teas Kym Brown opened A Southern Cup Fine Teas in 2016. She intended to open a tea shop to sell teas and accessories, but within the first week, Brown’s shop became a tearoom where friends gather to catch up, parents bring their children to teach them proper tea etiquette, and small groups celebrate birthdays and bridal showers. Brown fills her charming teal and pink cottage with elegant tea pots and cups, as well as a variety of loose-leaf tea blends. She is happy to help customers develop their palates for tea. Menus include a traditional cream tea with fruit and scones, as well as a children’s menu and a more robust afternoon tea menu. Q: If someone is unfamiliar with the tea tradition, how do you recommend they begin their experience? A: If they want to dip their toe in, they can come in and get a cream tea, which comes with scones, fruit and a pot of tea. If you’re not familiar with tea, I will ask questions: Do you drink coffee? How do you drink it? I recommend a black tea to start. China black is a smooth black tea. You can add milk and sugar. Next time they come in, they can try a green tea, maybe a fruity green tea or one with some spice in it. Q: Do you have any teas that are particularly popular?

A: The one that jumps out the most is a rooibos tea. It’s called Red High Heels and Chocolate. It’s a South African tea that has no caffeine and is naturally sweet. It brings a hint of chocolate and ginger.
Q: Are these tea experiences good for all ages? A: All ages, absolutely. Kids have to learn, and the only way they’re going to learn is to expose them to the experience. I had a little girl start coming at 2, and she came for every birthday. The shop has been a first-time tea experience for a lot of little kids.
Kym's Top 5 Hendersonville recommendations:
Q: How do you blend the tea tradition of the American South with that of Britain?
» Honeysuckle Hollow for shopping and quirky gifts.
A: I called it A Southern Cup because I wanted to put a Southern tradition on a British tradition. I’m from Louisiana, so I bring Southern traditions that I grew up with. And it’s not stuffy here at all. A lady came in one day, and her heel broke. I said, “Take your shoes off.” Where I come from, you walk around barefoot. Where I grew up, the door was always open and everyone was always welcome.
» Definitely Jump Off Rock for the views.
Q: What do you enjoy about being a small-business owner in Hendersonville?
» Go get a doughnut at McFarlan Bakery, if you don’t do anything else.
» Just walking Main Street in Hendersonville is a treat in itself. » The Baker’s Box. The bakery and sandwich shop started in a smaller location, and now they have a big restaurant on Asheville Highway.
A: The camaraderie with other small businesses is the best part. When I get up in the morning, I look forward to going in and bringing this experience to other people. Customers have become friends. I’ve had customers come in as brides, and now they’re bringing their kids back. For me, it’s a way to contribute to the community. I wanted to live in an area where there’s a lot of community, and this is my way to bring something fruitful and become a part of it.

FOOD & BEVERAGE
an itinerary for the culinary aficionado THE NIGHT BEFORE / BREAKFAST
DINNER
Begin your day in the rolling horse country of rural Mills River at the elegant Bed & Breakfast on Tiffany Hill. At this purpose-built inn—the first B&B inducted into the Southern Living Hotel Collection—luxury feels effortless and hospitality awaits at every turn. Each day begins in the sunlit dining room with a three-course “breakfast at Tiffany’s.” In the belief that every day is a celebration, even breakfast ends with dessert. A guest favorite is the inn’s signature pineapple pudding.
Make reservations at Postero, located in a former bank building. The smartly designed space features an open kitchen as its centerpiece. The restaurant maintains strong relationships with area farmers, calling them out on the menu when possible. Menu items honor Appalachian food traditions, while incorporating unexpected ingredients and elevating the presentation to something that resembles artwork on a plate.
Bed & Breakfast on Tiffany Hill
3-Day Foodie Itinerary View the 3-Day Foodie Itinerary for a longer, more filling experience.
MIDDAY After a leisurely morning, venture over to Bold Rock Hard Cider. In late 2015, Bold Rock opened its second production facility in Mills River, along with an apple-pressing barn, tasting room and cider garden. Take a tour to learn how apples are pressed into juice, which goes through a fermentation process similar to winemaking and is kegged or bottled on-site. Then, participate in a tasting to try several of the dozen ciders on tap, from the original Carolina Apple to ciders flavored with blackberry, pineapple, herbs and spices. Bold Bites mobile kitchen serves a menu of burgers, wings, nachos, sandwiches and wraps on-site.
AFTERNOON Head to downtown Hendersonville for the afternoon and pop into Wine Sage & Gourmet on Main Street. The wine shop and bar focuses on vintages from smaller wineries and also sells culinaryrelated gadgets and gifts. Postero

mountain moment with john french Owner of Appalachian Pinball Museum In the heart of downtown Hendersonville, you’ll find an attraction brimming with nostalgia and intrigue. Here, you can not only view treasures from a bygone analog era, but also play more than 80 pinball machines and video games, for only $12 a person. A prime example of the unique activities that make Hendersonville so special, the Appalachian Pinball Museum offers outstanding entertainment for visitors of every age. We sat down with owner John French to learn more about the museum. Q: When did you open the Appalachian Pinball Museum? A: My wife and I opened it in 2018, and I’m having the time of my life. I have a jobby: not a job; not a hobby. Q: Name some of your more interesting pinball machines, and do you allow people to play those? A: Oh yes. All the games except for the super old ones are on the floor to play. We’ve got a good old-fashioned Theater of Magic from 1995, and it’s everybody’s favorite. We’ve got Addams Family and Twilight Zone from 1993 or 1994. We have an Incredible Hulk from 1979, Police Force from 1989, Harlem Globetrotters from 1978, and a lot of electro-mechanical games from the 1970s.
we’ve got 24 video games and seven shooters. Altogether, it exceeds 80, but that number comes and goes. I’m always pulling things off the floor and putting things on. Q: What is your business philosophy? A: Just make people happy. When people come in here, they’re not coming to talk to somebody about their taxes, they’re coming in to have fun. They’re smiling when they come in, and I want to make sure they are smiling when they leave. Q: You have a snack bar and recently added beer. Is that going well? A: My philosophy is you can’t play pinball without beer. I like having beer for the adults, and we have sodas for the kids, plus chips and crackers.

retail therapy Where to Shop in Henderson County Retail therapy is alive and well in the Hendersonville area. The question is not whether there are enough shops, but whether there is enough time to visit them all. The best strategy is geographic – pick an area of the county and have at it. Here's a brief overview of shopping hotspots, including some newcomers and longtime favorites.
FLAT ROCK This friendly village, known as the “Little Charleston of the Mountains,” has offered shopping for visitors since the 1800s. Melinda Lawton, owner of Sweet Magnolia Gallery, got her start in the film industry before her jewelry business took off when Carrie Underwood wore her designs on “American Idol.” Another popular spot is Feather Your Nest, a consignment treasure trove of home decor, artwork, furniture and accessories. The Gallery at Flat Rock exhibits highquality works of art in a beautiful setting across the side street from Flat Rock’s famed Little Rainbow Row, where no Flat Rock visit is complete without stopping in The Wrinkled Egg gift shop.

Weave your way through Apple Country to see the blooms in the spring or the heavily laden boughs in the fall. Meander around the stately and historic homes of Flat Rock. DELIGHTFUL DAY TRIPS Hendersonville sits within easy reach of many other great experiences in Western North Carolina. Make it your home base for day trips to explore all the region has to offer. Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park (45 minutes): This park combines breathtaking vistas and unique biodiversity with a variety of hiking trails and one of the tallest waterfalls on the East Coast. The 26-story elevator ride through the mountain to the observation deck at the top is worth the ride. Biltmore Estate (45 minutes): One of the largest and most famous houses in the United States, this historic mansion was built by George and Edith Vanderbilt. The most popular times to visit are in the spring for the tulip bloom and at Christmastime. The 8,000-acre estate provides visitors with the chance to explore the grounds and gardens, join a wine tasting or marvel at the home’s design and decor during a self-guided tour.
The Gorge Zipline (16 minutes): Skim through the treetops on America’s steepest, fastest zipline canopy tour, starting at the rim of the Green River Gorge and plunging through 18,000 acres of protected wilderness on 11 ziplines, multiple platforms and a sky bridge. Sliding Rock (40 minutes): Located in Pisgah National Forest, this is a water slide as only Mother Nature could create. Nearly 11,000 gallons of water every minute send visitors sliding 60 feet along the rock face into an eight-foot-deep plunge pool below. Lifeguards are on hand from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Open seven days a week, weather permitting. Lake Lure & the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge (30 minutes): The town of Lake Lure has a large lake with a beach that is popular for swimming, boat tours and boat rentals. The town's Flowering Bridge is a roadway-turned pedestrian garden, containing more than 2,000 species of plants that bloom yearround, surrounded by expansive views of Chimney Rock & the Hickory Nut Gorge. Tryon International Equestrian Center (30 minutes): The ultimate destination for people who love horses, the outdoors and active living, the equestrian center offers first-class facilities for equestrian events at all levels.
Gratitude at Altitude A wonderful thing happens when visitors come to the Hendersonville area. The longer they spend up here in the Blue Ridge Mountains – above endless rolling hills, among the clouds – the more they feel it: An unmistakable sense of gratitude. Gratitude for these inspiring views. This overwhelming sense of peace. And for everything in their life that has brought them to this place and this moment. That’s why our visitors are pleasantly surprised to find themselves experiencing an almost unexpected level of appreciation for every sight, every sound, every craft beer and every warm “hello” from a friendly resident. It’s what makes Hendersonville a destination unlike any other. And it’s what we proudly refer to as Gratitude at Altitude.

an itinerary for family-friendly fun FRIDAY NIGHT Kick off your weekend with dinner at Campfire Grill in the quaint Village of Flat Rock. The restaurant recreates the summer camp experience in its dining room. Hendersonville is the camp capital of the Southeast, with approximately 20 youth summer camps. Standout menu items include the towering counselor burger and s’mores skillet served with graham crackers for dipping. Walk to an evening show at Flat Rock Playhouse. The State Theatre of North Carolina specializes in musicals, comedies and shows for young audiences. The professional theater merges top talent with an approachable, laid-back vibe for a bit of Broadway in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Allow everyone in the family to unplug at Kanuga Conference and Retreat Center. Located on 1,400 acres, the resort encourages outdoor exploration and quality time with loved ones. Book a hotel-style room in the main inn, or choose from multi-bedroom historic cottages and guest houses with various amenities, such as fireplaces, screened porches and kitchens.
SATURDAY MORNING If you’re in Hendersonville from late August through October, spend Saturday morning at an apple orchard. Hendersonville leads North Carolina in apple production, and many orchards invite customers to pick their own fruit. If apples aren’t in season, head to Elijah Mountain Gem Mine and search for
gemstones and gold. Covered outdoor flumes are open seven days a week yearround. In addition to mining, visitors can pet and feed the goats and admire colorful peacocks and pheasants in the aviary.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON Spend the afternoon in the Seventh Avenue Historic District. Apple Valley Model Railroad Club is located in the former train depot. The museum has a working HO-scale model train that depicts Western North Carolina circa the 1950s. A larger, all-weather G-scale display runs outside with plants and water features.
SATURDAY EVENING White Duck Taco Shop makes taco night an easy dinner choice. Adults will like the variety with everything from jerk chicken, lump crab, Korean beef bulgogi and lamb gyro filling tortillas. And kids will like the familiarity of chicken or cheese quesadillas.
As you navigate downtown, participate in the Apple Quest scavenger hunt. Designed by a local Girl Scout troop, the search involves a dozen brass apples hidden at landmark locations. A brochure with clues is available for download online, or you can pick up a printed copy at the Welcome Center on Main Street.
End the night with ice cream at nearby Celtic Creamery. The shop uses an Irish recipe and local ingredients to create an exceptionally creamy ice cream that is made, churned and frozen daily in-house.
SUNDAY MORNING After checking out on Sunday, make a final jaunt to Holmes Educational State Forest for a hike around the Talking Trees Trail. Along the half-mile loop, different species of trees share a bit about themselves, including their distinct characteristics and helpful uses. Making a quick trip? A variety of events take place throughout the weekend, including specialty tastings, dinners, tours, property hikes and lots of live music. mountain moment with michele and elisabeth Owners of Brightwaters Vacation Rentals In 2007, Michele Azan and Elisabeth Perez made their first visit to Hendersonville for a four-day weekend with friends. The New York City dwellers were so charmed by Hendersonville’s warm and friendly residents, they called a real estate agent on a whim and wound up putting an offer on a house during their vacation. “The mountains worked their magic, and we never looked back,” Michele says. “This is the place we were meant to settle.” Not able to replicate their NYC careers here, they opted for a new take on something they dabbled in years earlier in Florida — vacation rentals. With keen eyes and a love of history, they came across a group of cottages and cabins surrounding an old stone guest house in an area known as Brightwaters. And Brightwaters Vacation Rentals was born. Q: You immersed yourselves in the history of Brightwaters. Can you share a shortened version of its history? A: In the early 1920s, a former shoe salesman from Pennsylvania named Samuel Childs purchased 400 acres west of Hendersonville, from which he carved a 100-acre resort. He named it Brightwaters after an area near Tampa and promoted the resort to Floridians seeking to vacation in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The resort consisted of 25 cabins, an eight-bedroom hotel, plus lodge and dining hall. Today, the two-story, 1938 former hotel is the centerpiece of our property. Q: Guests often compliment you on the interior design of your rentals. What philosophy drives the designs?

A: Each home has its own personality, designed to be warm, comfortable and inviting. Our style has several
components: thoughtful attention to detail; uncluttered spaces; texture and layering that delight the senses; decorative accents and large-scale artwork to add flair and drama; and mixing high/low, modern and vintage furniture to create interest and make the spaces feel like home. Q: What are your guests’ biggest reasons for vacationing in Hendersonville and Henderson County? A: Our guests frequently tell us they come here for the plethora of outdoor activities our area offers — from pristine lakes, rivers and waterfalls to forests that welcome hikers, bikers and nature lovers. In particular, they also choose Henderson County for U-pick apple orchards and charming, family-friendly downtown Hendersonville full of art galleries, unique boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and breweries. Q: Is there a “secret season” visitors might not be aware of that you recommend? A: Yes! We tell guests September is one of the best times to visit. In September, it still feels like summer, with a hint of fall, and it’s easier to get reservations at popular destinations in our area. Q: What has been the key to becoming such a big part of the local community in a relatively short amount of time? A: We love meeting new people and offering help where we can. Over the years, many guests have become Henderson County residents and we’ve helped them get settled. We support and share advice with local business owners, and partner with them to provide memorable visitor experiences.
Elisabeth and Michele’s Top 5 Hendersonville recommendations: » Jump Off Rock One of the few peaks from which visitors can experience amazing views and sunsets without having to hike. » Umi Japanese Restaurant Offers consistently delicious food and great service seven days a week. » Horse Shoe Farm Provides guests with luxury accommodations, a restaurant and spa, on an 85-acre riverfront estate. » Marked Tree Vineyard Serves award-winning wines in a thoughtfully designed setting, including spectacular views from every angle. » Packa’s Place – A beer garden that welcomes everyone like family, offering music, food trucks and agritourism on their beefalo farm.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
mountain moment with elizabeth jackson Founder & General Manager at The Riveter Avid climber and outdoor enthusiast Elizabeth Jackson has never been one to back down from a challenge. Instead, she pursues it with an “all in'' mentality. A few years ago, her skill sets and inner drive served as the perfect force to create a combination climbing gym/ mountain bike park near Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Mills River. In early 2020, Jackson’s vision came to life with the opening of The Riveter. The final product included not just a climbing gym and a covered and open-air bike park, but also a yoga studio, a fitness studio, a retail shop, community work spaces, and a taproom and snack bar. Q: The Riveter is a unique attraction for outdoor enthusiasts. If you had to describe it in two sentences, what would you say? A: The Riveter is a place for all humans to find community and connection. The facility offers opportunities to climb, ride, practice yoga, strength train, grab a beer, and enjoy all that Western North Carolina is about. Q: What is the significance of the name?
The Riveter
41
Visit Hendersonville Official Visitors Guide
A: The Riveter was built to bring together the outdoor community in a safe, supportive environment, so the name fit because rivets are the strongest bolt to join two things together. As a female founder, the name is also a nod to the iconic Rosie the Riveter who symbolizes workforce equality and female empowerment. My hope is that other women will find strength in pursuing their dreams.
Q: By having all the necessary equipment available for rent, how have you shaped the experience for Hendersonville visitors? A: Our rental options and the orientations with our awesome crew make it easy for anyone to come in and try out the activities. You can even hop off a plane and come straight here with no equipment and we will set you up for riding, climbing or yoga. It’s also great for groups because everyone can rent whatever gear is needed to join in and have a good time! Q: Young kids seem to love the covered mountain bike pump track. Why is it popular with them? A: The canopy area is what we dubbed the covered dirt jumps and pump track. It’s an approachable space because you see exactly what you’re getting into. You can watch other riders work through the lines, and you can start on the green line (easiest) and work your way through the harder lines with similar styles. Q: Nobody likes to encounter rain on vacation, but it happens. What “outdoor” activities can people enjoy at The Riveter on rainy days without getting wet? A: We have the 15,000-square-foot climbing gym for bouldering and rope climbing, as well as the “canopy” portion of the bike park, which is covered to allow riding while it’s raining.
Elizabeth's Top 5 Hendersonville recommendations: » West First Wood-Fired is hands down the best place to eat and grab a good beer in downtown Hendersonville. » Carl Sandburg Home – I’ve always loved visiting the home and farm, especially with my three girls. » Ride Kanuga – if you mountain bike, definitely check it out for some of the region’s best trails. They also rent e-bikes, so you can get in all the laps! » Sierra Nevada is one of my go-tos. Always high-quality food and the best brewery in Henderson County! » Apple orchards – Sky Top and Grandad’s are both great options for U-Pick and amazing apple cider.

hiking & biking With miles of trails and some of North Carolina’s most beautiful views, Hendersonville is a paradise for lovers of the outdoors. Visitors can choose hiking and biking trails for any experience or fitness level. Whether you hit the trail on foot or on wheels, you’ll find unforgettable adventures waiting for you.
TOP HIKING OPTIONS Bearwallow Mountain: The easy-tomoderate trail takes you one mile to the mountain’s summit, where you’ll find breathtaking 360-degree views of Hendersonville, Mt. Pisgah, Mt. Mitchell and Hickory Nut Gorge. For more adventure, connect with the five-mile Wildcat Rock Trail and its three stunning waterfalls or return to the Bearwallow parking area and explore 2.4-mile Trombatore Trail’s spectacular views of the Hickory Nut Gorge and Bearwallow Mountain. DuPont State Recreational Forest: Encompassing more than 10,000 acres and 84 trails, this forest has something for everyone, from hikers to bikers to horseback riders. Popular trails include the Triple Falls and High Falls loop for hiking, and the Ridgeline Trail for biking, and the Cedar Rock Trail for both, however, you are encouraged to check out any of the park’s trails, not just its most popular ones. Fun fact: DuPont State Recreational Forest was the location for filming many scenes in The Hunger Games. For a full list of trails in Henderson County, view the Outdoor Map on page 49.

BIKING OPTIONS The Oklawaha Greenway: This 3.25-mile paved trail is perfect for a leisurely bike ride linking five of Hendersonville’s public parks. The 10-foot-wide path is accessible to visitors with physical limitations. Benches, water fountains and bike repair stations are also available. The Riveter: This one-of-a-kind gathering place serves both bikers and climbers, offering a covered outdoor pump track to practice bike skills, an indoor climbing gym, yoga studio, fitness gym, and a “libation station” – for after your sweat session. Equipment rentals are available. Ride Kanuga: Mountain bikers looking for a challenge will find it on this course designed by riders, for riders. Eight downhill trails of different difficulty levels are available by reservation. The on-site adventure center offers bike rentals and craft beers.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

an itinerary to make the most of your time in nature Surrounded by conserved or public lands, and only a short drive from the Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah National Forest, Hendersonville welcomes travelers seeking to disconnect from daily worries and reconnect with the natural world. The Blue Ridge Mountain terrain creates an ideal setting for hiking, mountain biking, paddling, ziplining and overall enjoyment of the great outdoors.
FRIDAY AFTERNOON Get into the flow of an outdoor weekend with a visit to Ride Kanuga, a downhill mountain biking park that’s a good fit for both beginners and advanced riders. The park has everything needed to outfit inexperienced riders, including instruction. Veteran riders can mount their bikes and go.
FRIDAY EVENING Check into a Mill House Lodge lakefront condo in Flat Rock, managed by WNC Mountain Rentals, then head to Hendersonville’s Main Street for your choice of restaurants and breweries.
SATURDAY MORNING After breakfast, go rafting with Green River Adventures. Or, if everyone is up for it, check out their sister attraction: The Gorge Zipline. It is one of the steepest and fastest zipline adventures in the nation.
smoked Carolina barbecue, accompanied by an impressive array of sauces and sides. Work off that barbecue with a visit to DuPont State Recreational Forest. Park at the Hooker Falls access area for a three-mile hike to three scenic waterfalls along Little River. Highlights include a swimming area below Hooker Falls and great views of Triple Falls. Falls throughout the forest may look familiar; scenes from The Hunger Games and The Last of the Mohicans were shot here. Mountain bikers should also consider the slick rock trails at DuPont, some of the best of their kind on the East Coast.

SATURDAY EVENING Take in a gorgeous sunset at Jump Off Rock, a small mountaintop park just 15 minutes from downtown Hendersonville. Go casual with outdoor dining at Guidon Brewing in the Historic 7th Avenue District. Guidon is within walking distance of a second brewery, a distillery and NC's first brandy bar.
SUNDAY MORNING Get going early for a half-day guided fly-fishing trip with DB bar D Outfitters in Mills River. Enjoy access to private waters where the average size of the trout caught is 17 inches. DB bar D accommodates anglers of all skill levels and offers shorter, two-hour guided lessons for beginners.
