WHO WE ARE We are hope. We are the means to a livelihood. We are YFC Rurka Kalan, a progressive social organization, a football club and a leader in empowering the youth. We are partners in a global campaign, which aims to restore the childhood of millions of children by means of care, protection, opportunities and participation. We are ambitious. We dream of an India where every child goes to school, is made available to decent alternative education, health care and shelter. We wish to share our dreams - join hands with the government, the civil society and the corporate sector.

RURKA KALAN WHERE IT ALL BEGAN The village of Rurka Kalan is situated in the Jalandhar District of Punjab (population approx 15,000), India and has been a harbinger of social and patriotic movements. The village had been a centre for the 'Gadar' Party movement, producing 22 freedom fighters. Similarly, in the field of sports Rurka Kalan has been a trendsetter since 1965. The village has produced five international footballers, hundreds of national level players. The village has also produced many renowned Kabaddi players and athletes.


YFC ORIGIN & PURPOSE

OUR GOALS

With a view to stem the increasing use of drugs amongst the youth of the village and surrounding areas, Gurmangal Dass, a young resident of the village decided to form a football club. The aim was to use football as the means to divert the youth from drugs, to a more active and healthy lifestyle.

Since our inception in 2000, we have been operating as a trust with the following goals:

Residents of the village assisted in the setting up of a football ground and two practice pitches by hauling soil from a nearby locations, leveling it, laying an under ground irrigation system and laying of the turf. The club ensured that the community would play an active role in curbing the problem of drug abuse.

1. To empower under privileged kids and youth towards a positive and sustainable lifestyle. 2. To positively channelize the energy of children towards their development. 3. To assist in the improvement of livelihood of the disadvantaged strata of society.

THE YFC MOVEMENT CAMPAIGN FOR DRUG DE-ADDICTION YFC launched a campaign to spread awareness of the ill effects of drugs. A play was organized in the heart of a village. A team of artiste from Panjabi University, Patiala performed 'Mitti Rudan Kare Dera Bhai Sadhu Ji' as well as organized and prepared a langar (feast) of tea and snacks. There was an overwhelming response from the crowd; nearly 2500 people attended the function. Pritam Singh, the Sub Divisional Magistrate was the chief guest. Also, Gurwinder Singh Sarpanch and all other Panchayat members were present on the occasion; Chairman Surjit Singh Sandhu gave a note of thanks.

HIV AIDS AWARENESS PROGRAM On June 26, in association with Nehru Yuva Kendra Red Ribbon Express Project, YFC arranged a drama at the bus stand in Rurka Kalan. Two plays were performed to spread awareness about HIV; nearly 100 villagers attended the program.

Selection trials for the Residential Batch A selection panel visited various places in Punjab and Haryana. On 11th April, open trials were held at Rurka Kalan; nearly 200 children participated in the trials. www.yfcrurkakalan.org

Computer Education to the Rural Youth YFC successfully runs two computer centers with an aim to develop computer skills amongst all players and disadvantaged youth.

COMPUTER CENTER FOR BOYS & GIRLS 1. Free computer education for the under privileged boys and girls. 2. Run by qualified staff in a modern, well-equipped lab. 3. Providing computer education to over 200 boys and 100 girls. 4. 60 girls from poor families are being given stipend @ Rs.250 pm per girl.

NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE Wolverhampton Wanderers Footbal Club (UK visit)

On the 28th of May, Wolves FC signed an MOU with JCT FC. YFC, JCT cadets and staff visited JCT Hoshiarpur to attend a gala function. In the afternoon Terry Connor and Jas Bains of Wolverhampton UK visited YFC campus. Terry Connor is the Wolves first team coach. In February, Wolves warmly received JCT FC Chairman, Sh. Samir Thapar Rajmohan Singh (Sr. Vice President and Gurmangal Dass President YFC) at Molineau.

KUFA Kohalpur (Maharashtra visit) A 30-member contingent of Kohlapur United Football Association visited YFC. The club arranged for all the boarding, lodging and training facilities for the delegation. KUFA played 3 friendly matches with the under-14 group of the academy. LEAGUES Rurka Kalan Football League Involve minds. With a view to promote football, and lure more youngsters in productive activities, the club started 'seven a side' football league. Six teams, namely Bula United, Rawal Royals, Bhunder Lions, Heta Tigers, Gau Heroes and Rurka Juniors participated. The league started on July 7 with an inauguration ceremony by Arjan Singh Sandhu (Canadian). A total of 25 matches were played with one match every Saturday and Sunday. A total of 78 players participated as the league concluded on 11 November. Sh. Rajdeep Singh Gill, D.G.P. Punjab Police, gave away the prizes to winners. He also honored promising players of the academy. Dignitaries from the sports arena were also present at the occasion.

Punjab Second Division Football League With the help of Punjab Football Association, YFC organized four home matches at Rurka Kalan. YFC won all the home matches and finished third in Punjab.

CAPACITY BUILDING Capacity Building of Football Coaches By Sanjeev Parmar (Canadian Coach) To update the coaching staff of YFC and other villages, the club arranged for a 6 days training program. Sanjeev Parmar (Canadian), a licensed coach delivered lectures and conducted practical sessions. After the successful completion Parmar was honored by YFC at the Football Grounds.

Capacity Building of Football Coaches By Kirk Stephens & Rob Cleverly (British Coach) With the efforts of Jasbir Sandhu of Coventry, UK, Robert Cleverly and Kirk Stephens, held a 6 days training program of football coaches and academy boys. They worked closely with the coaches to refine the player development process.

PRIMARY EDUCATION PROJECT YFC has adopted government primary school, Rurka Kalan, with a view to provide quality education to the children of very poor families. The club, with the help of NRI’s has provided the following facilities: 1. Qualified teachers, motivated towards results. 2. Teacher training programs and incentives to stimulate development. 3. Free uniforms, study material and transport facility for poor children. 4. Promotion of extracurricular activities and access to information technology 5. Regular parent teacher meetings to involve parents in their children's education.

RESULTS Academy under-16 team won Punjab State Football Championship held at Ludhiana in December. Academy under-16 team won National Inter-School Football Championship held at Gurdaspur in December. Academy under-17 team stood 4th in Punjab State Football Championship held at Ludhiana in Paldi, Hoshiarpur in September. Under-15 team participated in the Manchester United Premier Cup in November. Senior team finished 3rd in Punjab Second Division League. Senior Team won rural tournaments in Bundala, Noorpur, Kala Sanghian, Rurka Kalan, Shankar, Bilga and Khothran. Senior Team won state level PD Gupta trophy by beating BEG Rookee, BSF and SN Banga Club at Rurka Kalan. Senior and Academy team played friendly matches at Jalandhar with Khalsa College and DAV College (Jalandhar), and emerged victorious in all the matches.
