Inspiring Global Health and Wellness

Let’s improve the healthcare experience. FOR MORE THAN 50 YEARS, we’ve been designing facilities for health, education and research. In that time, we’ve learned one lesson above all: the value we bring to clients isn’t just about delivering great buildings. Rather, the value we bring is by applying the principles of design thinking to deliver great buildings that enable improved care, advanced education and accelerated discoveries. As an interdisciplinary team, we aren’t a traditional architectural practice. Our DNA is diverse, integrated and collaborative, which allows us to solve problems and create solutions in unique, holistic and innovative ways. We are planners, designers, engineers, data analysts, site designers, urban planners, wayfinding and brand experts, economists, nurses and architects who work together to design processes that lower costs and improve outcomes. We remove barriers to enable collaboration. We help imagine patient experiences that are second to none. We love what we do and we push each other every day to be better. For our clients and, more importantly, for the very special patient populations they serve.

We believe design is a game changer. WE TRANSFORM simple, strong ideas into lasting and meaningful building concepts that reinforce our clients’ commitments to compassionate care. We believe in collaborating across boundaries to create the seriously smart ideas where business, culture, operations, technology and the physical environment intersect to create magical patient experiences. We understand that healthcare isn’t just about treating illness anymore and that care delivery models should focus on managing a patient’s wellness over a lifetime, using preventive medicine and education to promote healthy communities with less cost to taxpayers, healthcare systems and patients. That’s why we continuously strive to maximize efficiency, using key strategies such as Lean Six Sigma and evidence-based design backed by our own research to design flexible facilities that can easily adapt to technological advances.

We foster innovation that occurs through ideas transferred across many disciplines. THE FUTURE of every industry depends on adapting to remain relevant. Our Strategic Innovation consultants help healthcare clients do exactly that. We balance analytic and intuitive thinking to help organizations across the globe imagine the future. We explore innovative strategies, services, visions, products and opportunities to mold it, always remembering that innovation comes in all shapes and sizes. In our experience, doing something as bold as reinventing how patient care is delivered doesn’t happen by chance. It comes from a core set of activities and behaviors designed to help individuals and groups discover concepts at the fringes of today’s practice.

We follow these principles when helping our partners drive innovation: People matter. Starting with human need as the basis for solution design produces outcomes that are useable and relevant in the real world. Transparency matters. Helping people think differently for themselves produces more sustainable results. Diversity matters. The best ideas emerge from the collision of diverse interests, experiences and abilities. Data matters. Robust and artfully designed analytics are critical to making insights understandable, meaningful and actionable. Story matters. Storytelling is essential to communicating vision, concepts, theory, strategy and recommendations. Execution matters. Start-ups are nimble and brave; stalwarts are visionary and strategic. Emulate both.

Focusing on the holistic patient experience, this integrated cancer center offers everything a patient needs in one place, including ambulatory care, allied health, clinical trials, research, education, complementary therapies and psycho-social support— in spaces that promote the restorative powers of nature. Chris O’Brien Lifehouse Camperdown, New South Wales, Australia

This modern facility honors the local context by incorporating rock, sea and landscape elements that are an integral part of the Hawaiian environment and serve as metaphors for birth, life and health. Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women & Children Diamond Head Tower Honolulu, Hawaii, USA

Fostering collaboration was a top priority for this new translational health science building in order to advance healthcare delivery by integrating science, education and clinical programs. Designers were able to incorporate communal spaces at both the macro and micro levels—from public spaces within the building itself to areas within labs for smaller group collaboration. A visionary community campus fosters a relationship between the hospital and its community, where transparency and accessibility is abundant, and where health, wellness, education, arts and recreation combine to empower citizens of all ages. Saint Anthony Hospital Focal Point Community Campus Chicago, Illinois, USA

For this orthopedic hospital, designers created a dynamic, sculptural expression of the institute’s clinical vision of “life in motion,” employing a language of fluid forms that link program elements and subtly adjust for internal demands, site configuration and views. The Bone & Joint Institute at Hartford Hospital Hartford, Connecticut, USA

In this first-ever “translational” research hospital, clinicians, scientists, innovators and technologists work together in shared, flexible spaces, surrounding patients, discovering new approaches and applying (or “translating”) research in real time. Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Chicago, Illinois, USA

Dubbed the “hospital of light, every space in this facility has been designed to welcome natural light and allow occupants to experience the nearby natural beauty from inside. The building design is inspired by the surrounding landscape and fits horizontally among the surrounding rolling hills. Schwarzwald-Baar Hospital Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany

The new Humber River Hospital is lean, green and digital, allowing them to embark on an important transition: transforming to a globally recognized leader of quality healthcare delivery.

Innovations at this new medical office building allow patients to enjoy a spa-like feeling and amenities while modern technology enables them to more easily access care when and where they want it. Kaiser Permanente Manhattan Beach Medical Office Building Manhattan Beach, California, USA

Through the Reimagining Ambulatory Design project, we helped Kaiser Permanente embrace a new vision for the future of ambulatory care, and are now working on designing the “space and experience to support it. Kaiser Permanente, Re-Imagining Ambulatory Care Design Southern California, USA

The design for the new Parkland Hospital is distinctly about this medical center’s relevance in connecting to the city’s urban fabric, and its importance as a civic anchor. The building massing, while iconic, is an honest expression of Parkland’s commitment to compassionate care. Parkland Health & Hospital Systems New Parkland Hospital Dallas, Texas, USA

Connecting with the community and landscape, the design team integrated the county’s slogan, “Where the Metro meets the Mountains,” throughout this replacement hospital. Abundant views and indigenous materials celebrate the legacy of the nearby mountain ridge. Northside Hospital Cherokee Canton, Georgia, USA

For this outpatient center, a series of tectonic planes slide, fold, and float in order to define space, let in daylight, and frame views. Inside, wall and ceiling planes comprising wood, glass, and natural stone help to define waiting areas, clinic modules, conference rooms, and a surgery center. Advocate Condell Medical Office & Ambulatory Facility Libertyville, Illinois, USA

This center creates a central campus destination with research, clinical care and education integrated on the one axis, and cancer care with other health services on another. Spaces throughout are designed to enhance the patient experience through physical and emotional connections.
