HDS Architects are a highly experienced practice, with extensive experience in designing and overseeing the completion of residential accommodation and healthcare projects. We actively seek projects were we have the opportunity to improve on the wellbeing of people who are at their most vulnerable, be it through a need for additional assistance and care later in life, or following an illness or injury. Our practice strives to create the best care environment possible, in which the resident or patient can live, recover and gain strength. Our experience in healthcare settings informs our care projects, and our team have developed an eye for designing with the resident or patient at the centre, whilst ensuring that care or clinical staff can undertake their roles as effectively and efficiently as possible. The dignity of people who use our facilities is paramount. Having worked with charities and care homes previously, we are aware of the approvals process and management system, present within the charity. As with our work in the NHS, we are also aware of budget constraints and the scrutiny applied, and will design to your fixed budget.

Our Capability Statement We have a strong commitment to high quality design, innovation, inclusivity and sustainability. This is demonstrated through our project track record and repeat custom from our existing private and NHS clients. We deliver high quality designs and projects, on budget and on programme. Our design knowledge and experience has a positive impact on the users of our buildings. We can bring the experienced gained at large design firms to your project, with the personal touch of a non-corporate practice.

Blind Veteran UK, Ovingdean Designs for a new Member Lounge

Older Adult Care We have enjoyed an ongoing relationship with Blind Veterans UK for the last few years, undertaking various projects at their flagship residential home at St Dunstan’s, Ovingdean, East Sussex. Over the years, we’ve worked with them to: 

Update their fire compartmentation to ensure compliance with current regulations. This involved reinstating compartment lines where they’ve been interrupted, replacing doorsets and creating a new fire compartment for escape within the main lobby area.



Listing Building Consent (and subsequent approvals) for alterations to the building, to ensure that BVUK carry the necessary statutory consent to undertake work on a listed building



Refurbishment of the kitchen to meet current fire safety and health & safety standards



Alterations to form a new hairdressing salon, physiotherapy suite, theatre room and games room for the use of Members.



Speculative masterplan scheme to refurbish and rearrange accommodation across the entire building. This scheme would future proof the building, ensuring it would be preserved for future generations while meeting the needs of Members in an up to date, modern fashion.



Renovation to the entrance lobby, and to rearrange Member spaces for improved accessibility and renovations to the swimming pool and changing facilities. Due to Covid 19, works to this area were postponed.

Although not listed, many of the building’s original features were retained and carefully restored. Project value: £20million



The site also includes a clubhouse with bar and restaurant for use by residents, along with other ancillary facilities to cater to their day to day needs including a shop, gym, and a hairdressing and treatment salon. Landscaped gardens include meandering paths around woodland areas and a bowling green. Project value: £18million Nightingale Hammerson, Wandsworth; a partial refurbishment project to provide ensuite bathrooms to all rooms, which resulted in the complete renovation of the whole floor. 18no single rooms with shared facilities became 15no. Ensuite single rooms, together with a new dining room, lounge, library, activity room, and ancillary accommodation, together with maintenance to the Grade II listed façade. Project value: £1.5million
