We experience built environments every day, whether actively or passively. While I have always enjoyed experiencing both urban and rural places, studying landscape design has equipped me with the understanding as to why I enjoyed these places and how they function experientially and functionally. As I have begun to accumulate my design skills, the importance of creating spaces built for people of all backgrounds and abilities has taken the foreground of my design thinking, with a special consideration towards how these people’s needs will change over the future evolution of our environment and society. I hope this portfolio communicates the passion and love I have for the world around me, and my excitement in shaping its future.

East-Side Athens Lear
Tasked with creating a space holding both a public library and early-childhood education center, the East-Side Athens Learning Commons creates an environment of multi-generational learning and community engagement. Despite the vibrant culture and communities among Athens’ Eastside, there is an abrupt lack of public amenities for a population that largely lives below the poverty line. This Learning Commons places a strong emphasis on providing this population, particularly those surrounding the local Elementary, Middle, and High schools, with places to engage and socialize while having access to educational resources.

A major challenge with this sites’ design lies within the organization of site programming to accommodate public users of all demographics while maintaining non-public areas for users of the early childhood center. These distinct user types were delineated through the introduction of clear circulation pathways and the placement of an open lawn area surrounding an existing building placed beneath a berm-like structure. This berm-building was leveled into tiers on which both small children within the early-childhood education center and public users could reside. Towards the southern side of the site is a series of basketball courts available to the public, accessible through the pedestrian/bike pathway connecting the site with the neighborhood directly behind it.

Georgia Square Mal

2.
As it stands now, the Georgia Square Mall is a textbook image of the archetypal crumbling American shopping mall, with a sea of parking surrounding an island of closed department stores and gimmick shops. This project approaches this site as an opportunity for sustainable mixed-use development, incorporating shopping, dining,

entertainment, and living all in a single location.

In place of the current expanse of surface parking, this design moves parking towards underground parking decks attached to the high rise apartments and entertainment complex, though there is a single surface lot placed near the front of the site. A strong emphasis is placed on utilizing rooftop space, with each building containing a green-roof and several containing rooftop bars or recreation areas.

side roads adjacent to the site. The site is split up into building use zones, with highrise apartments and townhomes being placed on the northside of the site, entertainment and grocery markets on the left and right hand sides respectively, general and clothing retail towards the south, and dining in the center. A park-like area runs through the center of the site, with stormwater detention areas treating runoff from impervious surfaces throughout the site.

Taking inspiration from the origins of Athens’ Townspring, this small gravel parking lot was activated through the screening of traffic along South Thomas street and offering areas of shade and rest. The currently covered underground spring is now unearthed, with widened rail ties bridging this gap to bring people into the space while further referencing the beginnings of this site as a former

rail yard.

Under the three rail tie bridge structures lies terraced levels with vegetation adapted to wet environments. Tensile shade structures raised above the western side of the space provide shade for users waiting for the bus while still keeping the area open for food trucks or vendors to park.

Designed for a client on the north side of Athens, an emphasis was placed on maintaining existing tree lines while creating attractive planting vignettes and open space for grandchildren to play. When making plant selections, attraction of pollinators and ease of maintenance were both important factors.

Located in central Athens on the site of a currently abandoned neighborhood park, the Marika Residence is an infill housing development built to accommodate the needs of an elderly resident. Dense floral plantings placed throughout the site allow for the attraction of pollinators, and raised beds towards the west end part of the site create opportunities for vegetable and fruit gardening.

A stone pathway leads the viewer through the flowering vegetation and into the open courtyard area, screened on the eastern side by a fence with vegetation along it. A full grading plan was done for the site, taking into account the existing topography and direction of stormwater throughout the site.
