Playground Without Boundary

INTRODUCTION

we were known to the competition by chance and we instantly decided to take part in it. This competition is like a experiment for us to try out what we think towards a playground. The design process is smooth and quick, we spend a few days to try to make up a scheme and we finished it in one week. After being informed we can show our work in the exhibition. The preparation lasted for a few months, from June to September which is much longer then the competition period. We worked on the model and re-paneling all the images. Much of design has been gone to trash than it is celebrated. We try to quit such kind of dreadful momentum and publish back a true story of thoughts, either as traces to next designer or as opportunities to receive more feedback. Therefore, this little book project begins...

YISA’S SHARING

Playground and Me

My parents always bring me to nearby playground during weekend when I was a child. It is easy to spend the whole afternoon in the playground. Nowadays playground is replaced by plastic module. They put safety as the first priority of designing playground, not many of them value the importance of its interest and uniqueness. Shareholder see this as a successful model and applied to every playground. When we look at city surrounded us, do we feel the same for buildings?

The study of playground during my last year of architectural study makes me realize that a good playground consist not only the equipment, but also its location, reaction to the surroundings and the overall layout led to great impact to the city and its people. In this competition, rather then concentrate on play equipment we are more focusing on the overall planning and zoning of the playground and its relationship with different zones and Tuen Mun park. We try to bring in sensory education as a basic element of our design and hoping to shape a new spirit of playground for our next generation.

JONAS’S SHARING

Some thoughs about Design... Design process to me is as important as the design outcome. The idea of play has been too much about provision of equipment in current governance. I cannot afford to see play is instrumental. Instead, it shall be a supportive element to bond pieces of growth opportunities together. Having some background knowledge of city planning and architecture may not be necessary a plus to this design task. To me, we look away from the issue and zoom out more to a city level. What can this corner of Tuen Mun Park contribute to the whole communities? We value a park is more than an urban design, yet a ground of social happenings. I tend not to bring idea into this design first, but listen to how such location perform. We don’t aim at spectacular grace but many starry moments instead. Turn out the ideas become less clear but the intention is quite strong. 6

According to the population census, there are totally 9.5% of the popuation which in the age group of 3 to 14 while in the past few decades, the number of playground built did not match the increase need of the children in Hong Kong. There should be more space for children to play, it is benefit as well as their parents and elderly as playground is also a communal space for the adults to socialize with each other. On the other hand, there are 6.3% of disabilities among total popultion while nearly 10% of them are disabilities under 30. The needs of playground for disabilities are large and cannot be ignored. In America, Inclusive play is one of the design elements of playground. Inclusive Play is a revolutionary concept to make all playgrounds accessible to children of all abilities. 10

The importance of playground towards children is not only encouraging children to have more physical movement but also in the sensory exploration of play. Refine the child’s senses so that he can appreciate the world around him.

Children nowadays are over-protected and their parents was over-controlled them. According to the questionnaire, the most common reasons of not go playing in the playground are playground is too boring and they are too busy. Playground in Hong Kong is not appeal to the elder children; they have other exciting games such as computer and video games. According to the research about the situation of primary four to primary six students joining extra-curricular activities in 2011, more than 45 percent of students are joining four to six extra-curricular activities and 22 percent are joining more than seven. Moreover, Hong Kong children need to spend a lot of time on homework under the education system. These left children with little private time for themselves and for play. 12

The design questions on the need of boundary between play area and the rest of the park where playground can be easily reached by users . It reorganizes zones of play into interwoven routes. Such play facilities include different level of engagement, age-group-focus and also risk-taking. We see play as a multi-sensory experience for child growth. The design provides multiple environmental settings, from knolls, water steps, and smooth skating ground to climbing net and floating net area. Such dimensional transformation is utilized of the site existing ground-scape and be principal strategy for landscape. In other words, we envision a fuse of play, leisure, observe and rest into this universal corner of the park.

We hope to spread our ideas of playground to you through this exhibition and booklet. We aim to create a better play space for our next generation. Our concept is to open up the boundary of a playground and let the children run freely on the landscape, not just physically but also mentally, with the use of the five senses ( 9 senses by Lady Allen) to feel the playground. Realize our proposal, we need youe support! Try to send a postcard of our playground to your family and friends and give us a ‘Like’ in our facebook page and follow our latest news!
