Grandfather worked in his garden every day.


He planted, weeded, watered and watched. He watched for gobbling, nibbling, munching rabbits, but, you would never see any rabbits in Grandfather’s garden.

In Grandfather’s garden, there were rows and rows of bright yellow sunflowers standing straight and tall with their faces turned toward the clouds. 6

In Grandfather’s garden, there were rows and rows of ripe red strawberries, bouncing from leaf to strawberry and plant to plant. 10

In Grandfather’s garden, there were rows and rows of round roly poly watermelons soaking up the raindrops as quickly as the showers ended.

In Grandfather’s garden, there were rows and rows of tall green corn stalks—their white and brown tassels waving and dancing with the breeze.

A rabbit??!!! But, you would never see any rabbits in MY Grandfather’s garden... would you?

Bunnies in Grandfather’s Garden ¼ cup plain nonfat yogurt 2 tsp. honey Sprinkle of parsley • •

• •

¼ cup light sour cream 2 tsp. spicy brown mustard Broccoli, carrots, celery, cherry tomatoes

Mix together yogurt, sour cream, honey and brown mustard, spread evenly over a plate. Sprinkle with parsley to make grass. Cut celery lengthwise to make long tree trunks. Cut broccoli and use the florets to make the tops of the trees. Cut carrots to make round circle of different sizes, save some of the carrots to slice and make ears. Now have fun placing your trees in Grandfather’s garden, use the cherry tomatoes as red bushes for your carrot bunnies to hide around. You can use any vegetables for dipping—sprinkle with sunflower or pumpkin seeds for added crunch! Sunflower Salad

5-6 carrots peeled and shredded 1 8oz. low fat vanilla yogurt

½ Cup raisins 4-6 lettuce leaves

Mix everything except lettuce leaves and refrigerates 15 minutes. Wash lettuce leaves. • Line a plate with the lettuce leaves forming a circle. Put the yogurt mixture in the middle to create the face of a Sunflower. *Be creative if you don’t like raisins sprinkle sunflower seeds on top or for added color or try dried cranberries! Grandfather’s Favorite Stew 2 carrots cut into small pieces 1 small onion cut up 1 16 oz. can of Beef stock 1 potato peeled and chopped 1 8oz can tomato juice 1 small cabbage shredded • •

Put all ingredients in a pot and cook 45 minutes or until vegetables are tender Salt and pepper to taste!

Eat it quick before the bunnies do!!

Mary Jane Romig is a Glenville State College graduate with a BA in Early Childhood Education (NK-6) her degree also includes elementary ed. 1-6 with specialization 7-9. She recently retired after 35 years of teaching. For most of her career she worked at New Creek School in New Creek, WV. While teaching at New Creek she became involved in grant writing and was instrumental in helping the school obtain several large grants. One of the grant programs that she was instrumental in helping to create was an after school pre-school program called Launching Lifelong Learners. This program was used later as a model for other Mineral County Schools. She is now employed as the Christian Education Director for the Keyser Presbyterian Church in Keyser, WV. Along with her husband, Rick, they have 2 grown children. They are now anxiously awaiting the birth of their second grandson.

Karen Riley received her Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland, her Master’s of Arts in Reading from Frostburg University, and her administrative certification from Salem University. Certified as a classroom teacher K-6, Reading Specialist Pre-K through adult, and Administrator Pre-K through 12, she has worked in the field of education for 28 years and is currently employed as an assistant principal for West Virginia’s Mineral County School system. Her artistic interests have been a lifelong passion; with art training received from Montgomery College, MD, and University of Maryland.
