Haiyan – A Green Spot in China’s greener urbanization
China is the world’s biggest single market In the next 35 years, China tends to enlarge its economy (GDP) by five to six times: from 8.000 billion dollars to 40.000- 50.000 billion, according to a US report. Already in 2020, 50% of the world’s middle class will live in Asia. Urbanization is the mega trend that will maintain growth in the economy. In China, 50% of the population lives in the cities today. China has, however, a target that 80% of the population will live in cities, and thus put the country on the same level as all other industrialized countries. This means that in the coming years, there will be construction of housing, schools, hospitals, shopping centers, leisure facilities, and much more to accomodate the 270 million people who will move from rural to urban. In the same period, a large portion of the existing buildings will be renovated for higher energy efficiency. In other words: In order to reach its goal, China has to build “a new Germany” every 6 years, and they want to do it responsibly
The ultimate goal is to create the foundation for better lives for the people of China - through a cleaner environment, while at the same time providing the opportunity to increase consumption. That’s why Danish companies now must choose whether to bet on saturated local markets, or be an active player in the huge Chinese growth market. A lot of Danish companies are doing well in China, creating 20% of growth per year. Second wave of Danish companies moving to China is already on full power. Now, the goal is no longer simply to produce cheaper, but mainly to acquire shares in the Asian growing market. From 2007 to 2013, the number of companies entering Chinese market has increased by 100% from 217 to 417. Haiyan, in this case, will be the right choice for many companies that intend to enter the Chinese market.
The Chinese leaders want to shift to a growth model based more on domestic consumption and a more efficient use of resources - as well as increased use of sustainable energy sources. 3
