DOWNEAST CHALLENGE Notice of Race

Marblehead to Boothbay Harbor August 7-8, 2020

1.1 Event: The Marblehead Yacht Club invites sailors to participate in the Downeast Challenge, a long distance overnight sailboat race of 100 nautical miles from Marblehead, Mass to Boothbay Harbor, Maine starting on Friday, August 7. This race is a qualifier for the Mass Bay Sailing Association (MBSA) Overnight & Shorthanded Championship, and for races like the Marblehead to Halifax or Newport/Marion to Bermuda. 2.1 Eligibility: Open to boats with a valid 2020 ORR-ez rating certificate. Boats without an ORR-ez certificate shall be assigned an uncontestable rating. Divisions shall include ORR-ez Spinnaker, Non-Spin, and Shorthanded (Single or Doublehanded). 2.2 Registration: Enter online www.regattaman.com. All entries must be received by August 6, 2020 at 1800. 2.3 Fees: The entry fee received by July 24 is $55 ($5 discount for US Sailing members, and/or $5 discount for MBSA members or GMORA members). Late registration received July 25-Aug 6 will be charged a $20 late fee. 3.0 Rules: This event will be governed by the MBSA General Sailing Instructions except as changed by this NOR, or the event Sailing Instructions. (a) Shorthanded boats may use self-steering devices. This modifies RRS 52. (b) Boats shall adhere to the US Sailing Safety Equipment Requirements (USSER) for Coastal Races as defined in USSER #1.0.2. https://www.ussailing.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/US_SER_2019.0_Categories.pdf The safety of a boat and her crew is the sole and inescapable responsibility of the “person in charge”, who shall ensure that the boat is seaworthy and manned by an experienced crew with sufficient ability and experience to face bad weather. S/he shall be satisfied as to the soundness of hull, spars, rigging, sails and all gear. S/he shall ensure that all safety equipment is at all times properly maintained and safely installed or stowed as appropriate, and that the crew knows where it is kept and how it is to be used. 4.0 Notices to Competitors: Sailing Instructions (SI’s) and notices will be posted on www.regattaman.com page for this event. MYC Race committee will monitor VHF channel 69 at the start. 4.1 Skippers Meeting: Mandatory skippers meeting, sponsored by Rumson’s Rum, will be held on Thursday August 6 1900 hours at the Marblehead YC, 4 Cliff, St. Marblehead, MA to discuss the course, finishing protocol, and mooring information. Skippers and crew are welcome to participate in rum tasting and dine at the MYC. Scratch sheets and changes to the SI’s will be available at that time and posted on regattaman.com’s event page. 10.1 The Start: The warning signal will be at 1200 in the vicinity of G”3” Fl G 4s which is NW of Childrens Island. 16.0 The Finish: The finish buoy is R”4” Fl R 2.5s which is NW of Squirrel Island in Boothbay harbor. Skippers will record and report finishing times per the Sailing Instructions. 24.0 Prizes: All skippers and crew are invited to the Awards Party sponsored by Rising Tide Brewery and Rumson’s Rum at 1600 on August 8 at Hodgdon Marina Boothbay Harbor, ME. Trophies will be awarded in each class, for 1st 2nd and 3rd place. MARBLEHEAD MOORINGS: For skippers requesting guest mooring in Marblehead on August 6, contact John Murray of MYC at 781-632-8828 by July 24. We will try to accommodate up to 10 visiting boats 38’ or less (possibly with rafting).
