8 Common Misconceptions about Skin Care

..................................................................................................... Availability of information about skin care online has its pros and cons. The spread of advices for skin care makes room for a lot of misconception that may harm your skin because the advices might apply under rare circumstances. Inform yourself about the following beauty myths and enjoy healthier skin. 8. Popping Pimples The myth states that popping pimples helps by getting rid of the pus inside them. The fact is that when you squeeze a pimple, you get rid of some of the pus while the rest is pushed beneath the skin. This causes nasty consequences like inflammation and scars. The remaining pus can even produce another pimple next to the popped one. A good alternative to popping a pimple is using a comedone extractor to remove the pimple completely. 7. Safety of Tanning Booths Advertisements about tanning booths say that they provide safer tanning environment than sun tanning as they filter out UVB rays. Nonetheless, tanning booths exposes your skin to UVA rays that gets deeper through your

skin and puts you in the risk of skin cancers and premature aging. Moreover, tanning booths might lack proper hygiene. 6. Effectiveness of Wrinkle Eliminating Creams Be advised that no product is an anti-aging miracle. Some creams give temporary results by hydrating skin to plump it out. Creams containing antioxidants like Vitamin C are beneficial. More effective wrinkle fighting creams would contain retinoids which boost the production of skin cells and so help with wrinkles and fine lines. Retinoids, like Retinol and Tretinoin, have additional advantages like reversing sun damage and treating acne. 5. Value of SPF Our skin gets affected by two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB, so a good sunscreen should provide protection from both rays. A lot of people assume that the higher the SPF value on a sunscreen, the better protection it provides. However, SPF, sun protection factor, refers to protection from UVB rays only. To make sure that your sunscreen can protect you from the harm of both UVA and UVB rays; go for a broad spectrum type having SPF of at least 15. 4. Greatness of Expensive Skin Care Products Expensive skin care products get their high prices from carrying brand names, having fancy fragrances and attractive packaging. You can easily find the same active ingredients in more affordable products at drugstores. Hence, you can still take care of your beauty on a low budget when you check for your desired active ingredients in different products. 3. Skipping Sunscreen on Cloudy Days When you are outdoors during the day, you must apply sunscreen because even if you don’t feel sun’s heat, its UV rays still reach your skin. Sunscreen must be applied every two hours and if you sweat or swim, apply it after drying off. You cannot rely on makeup containing SPF to provide you with the necessary protection because you would need 15 layers of it for effectiveness. 2. Getting Facials and Microdremabasion Facials can give you a refreshing, relaxing sensation, but are they good for skin care? The answer is no and they might actually lead to breakouts. Microdermabrasion is another costly procedure that just exfoliates the outer layer of skin with no remarkable benefits. 1. Scrubbing with Soap Acne contains oil and bacteria and this leads people to think that scrubbing with soap will cleanse the skin. Too much scrubbing with soap will strip your skin from its natural oils thus leading to rashes. Therefore, use a mild cleanser to wash your skin, dry gently by tapping with a towel and finishing off with a moisturizer or sunscreen if you are going out.
