One of the most annoying things about the summer season is the annoying buzzing and biting of mosquitoes. It’s painful, it’s itchy, and it can possibly be dangerous. Read on the following facts about mosquito bites and how to avoid them. Why does a mosquito bite? Mosquito bites are only caused by female mosquitoes. The female mosquito requires proteins in order to lay its eggs, and guess from where does it attain its protein? Yes, from humans and other warm-blooded creatures. Mosquitoes can bite multiple hosts and it becomes dangerous if it passes infection through its saliva from one host to the other. What are mosquitoes attracted to? Mosquitoes certainly doesn’t go after specific individuals, however some factors does play a role in being the mosquitoes’ target. These factors include high steroids and cholesterol levels on the skin, excess uric acid, and individuals who give off more carbon dioxide e.g. pregnant women. What are mosquito-bite illness and its symptoms?


Besides itchiness, symptoms of mosquito-bite illness, much like flu, include fever, headache, body aches and a rash. The illness varies from mild to extreme and a few examples are: West Nile virus, Malaria, Encephalitis, Yellow fever, Chikungunya virus, and Dengue fever. How to prevent mosquito-bites? Luckily, there are ways to protect you against mosquito-bites and the entire nuisance that comes with it. Here are some examples: • Spray mosquito repellant when you’re not at home. If chemical repellants give you skin irritations, there are natural ones available that contain lemon eucalyptus oil or soybean oil-based repellent. • IR3535 may cause some irritations but is better than chemicals containing DEET. • Wear bright colored clothes. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors. • Avoid drinking beer, beer drinkers are found to attract mosquitoes. • Do not spray floral perfumes. • Keep your surroundings dry. • Place mosquito nets or screens on your windows.
