What’s a Heat Stroke and How Can We Avoid It?

Under today’s rise in temperature and the fact some of us are enforced to work under such conditions, our bodies are subjected to heat stress and heat stroke. It’s necessary for each individual to be aware of the effects of a heat stroke and the precautions that should be taken to avoid it. What’s a Heat Stroke? A heat stoke is caused by the rise in body’s temperature to a degree higher than it can handle. This somewhat prevents the blood from reaching certain organs like muscles and the brain causing exhaustion. You will experience symptoms such as weakness, nausea, headache and vomiting. As your body temperature continue rising, your heart rate becomes faster and your body’s natural reaction to bring down your temperature by sweating falls short and your temperature may exceed 41°C. By that time, the individual experiences confusion and irrational behavior and it may escalate to severe illness, brain and organ failure, coma and in some cases, death. How to Protect Yourself against a Heat Stroke? Drink Fluids : It’s important to keep ourselves hydrated all the time. Drink lots of fluids; you may not be aware when your body is dehydrated.


Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine : These kinds of fluids dehydrate you. Rest : Avoid doing much work during the afternoon. Close All Windows and Doors : Open your windows in the early mornings and close them when it’s hot outside. Put Your Feet in Cold Water : Our body liberates heat from our hands and feet, soak your feet in cold water to get rid of the heat. Position Ice In Front of a Fan : Let the fan drive cold air from the ice pocket to you. Rinse you Head in Water : You can make your head or the shirt that you’re wearing wet and let the air run through it.
