The Budget and your wallet by Jared Reed So, how will the Budget affect the average GP? Super benefits take a hit, but there are advantages to nurse practitioner prescribing rights, says one analyst. From 1 July, the tax deduction for GPs who place their practice buildings into negatively geared super funds will halve, with the maximum contribution and matching benefit possible dropping from $50-25,000 for under 50’s, and $100-50,000 for over 50’s. Taking the icing off the popular tax strategy will discourage owner-operator GPs from using this saving to build bigger buildings, or merging with other practitioners, says Mr David Dahm, CEO of practice management firm Health and Life. He says GPs recently affected stockmarket-wise had looked to the strategy with the hope of saving money. “There’s still a tax advantage in putting your practice property into a super fund, and it’s still tax advantageous but it’s obviously limited the advantage…it’s not to say stop expanding your building, there’s still a good commercial reason for having your building regardless of whether it’s in super or not,” he told 6minutes.

He adds that allowing nurse practitioners prescribing rights and MBS-access should be welcomed from a time/money perspective, not viewed as a threat. “If you’ve structured your practice smartly enough and you’ve actually acknowledged that nurses could have a role in your practice, they are actually good revenue earners for you if you can’t find that doctor you’re short on,” says Dahm. “There’s a lot of stuff that nurses can play a big role in…they play a clear role in freeing up appointments and getting doctors to see patients who they want to see, but also making sure the patients who need attention are getting it.”

When I discussed care planning for my diabetic patients with my practice nurses and suggested that the nurse preamble would include making sure every diabetic was on an ACE inhibitor, statin and aspirin, I was asked "Whats an Ace inhibitor, whats a statin?". I have my doubts that nursing training allows safe prescribing and its too bad we have made it look easy when we all know it is not. Posted by karen price 13/05/2009 3:22:35 PM

Hi Karen, this is where some of the confusion lies, Nurse Practitioners are very different from Practice Nurses. With time and more education of GP's and the community the differences will become clear. Jared had some interesting comments and mabye we will see some NP's on GPPlus centres in SA and even working alongside GP's in practices. Mike NP Posted by Mike 13/05/2009 4:09:07 PM You need to be very clear that practice nurses are NOT nurse practitioners. NPs have extensive postgraduate education and clinical expertise. Practice nurses are clearly a different group. Posted by Peter 13/05/2009 4:32:14 PM Read all 3 comments Submit your feedback here:
