According to Australian guidelines both men and women should not drink more than 14 units of alcohol per week, and no more than two drinks per day. That raises another much-debated question: what constitutes a unit of alcohol? For the record, a unit translates to 10ml, or 8g, of pure alcohol - the amount of alcohol the average adult can process in an hour. A one-unit alcoholic drink is roughly equivalent to 100ml of wine (13.5% alcohol) or 30ml nip of spirits. However, a can or stubby of full-strength beer can be as much as 1.4 standard drinks, while a restaurant sized glass of wine at 150ml equates to between 1.4 and 1.6 standard drinks, depending on the alcohol content.
