Monkeypox virus

First discovered in laboratory monkeys in 1958, the monkeypox virus has been transmitted among humans since 1970.

Initially isolated in Africa until the first US outbreak in 2003, monkeypox was recently declared an international public health emergency, as outbreaks affect 69 non-endemic countries due to travel-related transmission.
