Physical therapy programs in Brooklyn, NYC help patients restore and regain physical strength and function, enabling them to lead a normal and comfortable life. A recent study conducted by University of Pittsburgh found that physical therapy is as effective as surgery and should be fully considered as a first-choice treatment option. Of the 169 patients who participated in the study, 87 were randomly assigned to have surgery and 82 to have physical therapy. The findings of the study are as follows:
In the first group, 74 patients underwent surgery, with 45 showing success after two years (a 61 percent success rate).
Another 44 patients were assigned to receive physical therapy, but opted instead to have surgery, with 24 having success (55 percent).
Of the other 29 patients who completed physical therapy, 15 had long-term relief (52 percent).
There were no gender differences in the results. The researchers concluded that patients should always be encouraged to pursue nonsurgical options such as physical therapy first and that surgery should be the last resort. Effective implementation of physical therapy rehabilitation programs can help patients achieve successful outcomes regardless of their age, type of condition, or severity of the pain.
