IT’S OUR FAULT We, as a society and as consumers, have been passive in our relationship with the brands we allow into our homes. Brands tell us that their products are safe to use, healthy even, and we believe their claims without challenge. We are guilty of a collective assumption that the governing bodies that regulate these products do their due diligence, adhering to a process that we believe includes rigorous testing of each ingredient, months of observation and stringent approval guidelines – a process that ultimately makes us feel good about the products we bring home. We are wrong on every count.
It only takes 26 seconds for the harmful chemicals found in the products we use to be absorbed through our skin and enter our bloodstream. From there, those
same chemicals wreak havoc on the body by disrupting hormones and reproductive systems, reducing IQ or causing cognitive delay, negatively affecting behavior, reducing cell resilience and even altering our very DNA. When it comes to learning about what really goes into the products we use to clean our homes, protect our loved ones and maintain good hygiene – the truth hurts – but it can also save the health of ourselves and our family. Because the truth is simply this: the products we use on a daily basis are poisoning us.

THE PROBLEM Chemicals are ubiquitous. In the United States alone, we
manufacture more than 80,000 chemicals, most of which are unregulated. Even though regulatory groups in other
nations have sounded the alarm on this unnatural disaster, our corresponding U.S. agencies have been slow to respond. In fact, 11,000 of the chemicals still found in U.S. products have been banned in Europe, Japan and Canada. We’ve been led to believe that these cosmetics, personal care and home cleaning products are safe to use, when in fact, science is telling us that they could have very harmful effects.
Infants are at Higher Risk
According to a 2005 study conducted by the Environmental Working Group, it was discovered that more than 200 chemicals are transferred during pregnancy from a mother to her baby – chemicals that can have a dramatically more harmful impact than exposure to those same chemicals later in life. Because the systems that would normally filter out or expel harmful toxins aren’t fully formed and because a developing child’s chemical exposures are greater pound-for-pound than that of an adult, children are facing amplified risks especially from chemicals like mercury, PCBs and dioxins (EWG 2005). 10 | HEALTHY HOME MAGAZINE
A joint statement from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine declared “toxic chemicals in our environment harm
our ability to reproduce, negatively affect pregnancies and are associated with numerous long-term health problems”
including birth defects, childhood cancers and impaired brain development in children (ACOG 2013). In response to this study, the American Chemistry Council, the trade association for the chemical industry, went on the offensive attacking the doctors’ statement, claiming that their study would sow “confusion and alarm among expectant mothers.” The chemical industry is certainly not shy about spending millions of dollars to oppose federal and state attempts to regulate chemicals, even filing lawsuits when necessary. The American Chemistry Council filed a suit against California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment when their intention to add BPA to California’s influential Proposition 65 list of “chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm” was announced, a lawsuit that is still pending (OEHHA 2013).

EDCs are found in many everyday products such as plastic bottles, metal food cans, detergents, cosmetics, flame retardants and pesticides, and can interfere with the normal activity of natural hormones, producing adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, cardiovascular, metabolic and immune effects over time and through continued exposure.

With the average American leaving their house every morning already exposed to over 185 chemicals, it is no small wonder that this generation remains the sickest ever. In addition to the impact on prenatal development and disease susceptibility noted above, childhood and adult cancer rates have skyrocketed, and ADHD rates are at an all-time high, issues that can each be attributed to ongoing chemical exposure (EWG 2005).

If there’s to be any hope for reform from the chemical industry, it will be because consumers hit them in their pressure points: refusing to purchase products with harmful ingredients, educating friends and family about the dangerous chemicals found in common household products and by sharing healthy alternatives to those products with others.

Dr. Jon Meliones Dr. Jon Meliones has been working with the Mommy's Club team for a year. He is the head of Duke University's Pediatric Critical Care Unit, ranked among the top programs in the world. He is a practicing surgeon and has been performing heart surgery on unborn, new born and young children for over 30 years. He is highly regarded by the American Academy of Pediatrics and ranked among the best doctors in the world in his areas of expertise.
Dr. Sameh K. Toma Dr. Sameh K. Toma graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor Degree in Science in Electrical Engineering. He then graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill School of Medicine and completed his residency there as well. During his residency, he conducted significant research and published several articles regarding infertility, endometriosis and fetal wellbeing. His most significant training came under the late Dr. Luther Talbert, Fellowship Director for Reproductive Endocrinology at UNC-Chapel Hill. Dr. Talbert then left UNC-Chapel Hill to open the North Carolina Center for Reproductive Medicine and asked Dr. Toma to join him in this private practice. Together, they created the most prolific and successful fertility clinic in the region. Dr. Toma also has used his engineering and medical expertise to develop color ultrasound. He also designed the state-of-the-art laboratory at NCCRM. It’s similar to a microelect clean room providing the cleanest air environment for embryology. This is a major reason for the high pregnancy success rates enjoyed at the facility. Dr. Toma is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. HISTORY OF POLICIES & PROCEDURES As a distributor with nearly 40 years experience in this Industry, I cannot over emphasize the importance of a company having policies and procedures (P&P’s), which protect the interests of the distributor and not just the company. We each know that certain rules are needed to protect the interests of any company. If these were not in place, no enterprise would be willing to invest the capital and time required to build a successful organization. Years ago, the rules could be short, plain and simple, written so anyone could easily understand them. Because the industry was young and unknown at the time, the policies promised to new distributors that they owned their businesses, the income could not be taken from them and could one day be left to their children and grandchildren. Without these promises, few distributors would have been willing to invest their lives in building their organization. As the years went by, the complexity of the rules greatly increased. The companies gained wealth and added lawyers to their corporate staffs, lawyers whose job was to protect the company’s interests. Many of these lawyers never met the distributors and ignored the promises made to the distributors by the founders of the company. What now exists in the industry are complex legal documents worded in favor of the companies, which because of their complexity, few prospects read. Prospects check a box without reading them and now are bound to a one-sided contract.
