Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends


April 2011 Good Morning!

Have you ever wanted to know what the current exchange rate is for the US dollar compared to the Seychelles Rupee? It’s 1 to 11.5988 if you were wondering. Or have you wanted to know what the precise temperature is in Key West, Florida? At the time of this writing, it’s a miserable 85 degrees and sunny. In today’s day and age, our smart phones, our laptops and even our TV’s have access to thousands of ‘apps,’ programs designed to bring us more information than we will ever need to know. In 1 Peter 4:10 it states, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” This summer at Quaker Haven Camp, we want our youth going back into their homes, schools and churches knowing that God has given them some ‘apps’ or gifts that will help in their spiritual walk and the walks of others. So please be in constant prayer for our staff, for the campers and for every moment God gives us so that we are strengthening & encouraging our campers in their spiritual walk with Christ and they can leave knowing ‘we’ve got an app for that.’ - Aaron Hughs

IYM sessions, July 21-24, Quaker Haven Camp The Feast of Faith has been a part of yearly meeting sessions since 2009. Designed to follow the close of business sessions on Saturday afternoon, this banquet allows Friends of all ages to gather for food, fun, and inspiration. The banquet is held in the Quaker Haven Activities Center and is catered by the QHC food staff. This year’s program will feature the music of Witness, a men’s trio from Union Bible College. The evening will include recognition of our newest churches and worship groups as well as the annual attendance awards for meetings with the best representation. The Feast of Faith is a time to unwind; a time to reconnect; a time for pleasurable fellowship among Friends. And there's plenty of room for all!


R epresentative Council Saturday, April 9, 9 am Friends M em orial Anderson First Friends will host a hymn sing with the Melody Masters, Sunday evening, April 10, 6:30 pm. Thirty-five to 45 different denominations come together to praise the Lord by singing the old hymns. You are invited to join them. There will be refreshments following the praise service. Richmond First Friends invites all monthly meetings in Spiceland Quarter to participate in a regional threshing session to discuss the topic of authority and love on April 3 at 2pm. Wabash Friends will present a leadership training on “Managing You in 2011,” held Thursday, April 14, noon to 1 pm with Ed Turi, Executive Leadership Consultant. $20 nonrefundable registration fee per workshop. A light lunch is included in this fee. To register and learn about a special discount, email to scott@wabashfriends.org. Winchester Quarterly Meeting will meet at Jericho Friends, Sunday, April 10. The business meeting will start at 6:30, worship service at 7:00 pm. Tom Hamm will speak about the responsibilities of the Communication & Publications Committee. The IYM Missions Committee has awarded scholarships to the following: Cadiz Friends, Maple Run Friends, and Farmland Friends. Cadiz Friends youth and adults are now in Kentucky on a mission trip with Christian Service International. Maple Run Friends youth and adults will go to Kentucky for a mission trip with CSI in June. Bill Bruneau, pastor at Farmland Friends, will take a trip to India this September for mission service. According to the Indiana Department of Revenue, “Casual laborers, some domestic employees, ministers and those who receive pension annuities may choose not to have tax withheld from their earnings. However, their income is still subject to state and county tax.” It is also still necessary for all employers to file – regardless of whether they withhold state and county tax for their pastors. If your meeting does not, simply complete form WH-1 for the State and County and enter $0 for the withholding amount. FUM Triennial Registration is open! The Triennial will be held at Wilmington College in Ohio, July 27-31. Visit the online registration site to view the week’s schedule. There will be a welcoming of incoming General Secretary Colin Saxton. Early bird registration prices end May 15. In the past, some of our Kenyan Friends have spent their whole life savings in order to attend an FUM triennial. Some have relatives here but all would like to spend time getting acquainted with American Friends. There will be a tour for our international visitors this year. Would you be able to host a visitor(s) in your home for one or two days before and after yearly meeting sessions? If so, contact Sylvia Graves at sylviag@fum.org.


Thank you for bringing the water of life to Turkana, transforming lives! Contributions, for drilling a well, from FUM meetings and individuals, exceeded the $10,000 goal by three times, and now research has been conducted by FUM staff volunteers to study the feasibility and likely success of a well in Katapakori, a village in the hot, dry desert area of Turkana.

A culture of health How to create a healthy workplace culture

A

lthough rising direct health care costs are a concern for every company, many don’t take into account the indirect costs that also impact the total cost of health care. Indirect costs are losses that occur as a result of a decrease in productivity caused by employee illness, absence and “presenteeism” — when employees are on the job but not contributing to their full capacity due to physical or mental health issues. To combat these rising costs, business leaders should consider instilling a culture of health in the workplace. “Transforming a culture to one that promotes and supports employee health requires active support from management in making workplace health a priority,” says Sally Stephens, president of Spectrum Health Systems. Smart Business spoke with Stephens about how a culture of health in the workplace can benefit your company and the steps to creating that type of culture. Why is creating a healthy culture important? It is well documented that a healthy work force contributes to a healthier bottom line. Trends including globalization, changing work force demographics and the increasing costs associated with attracting and training skilled workers are contributing to a shortage of human capital. Finding talented employees is likely to be the single most important management concern. Providing benefits that keep employees healthy, productive and loyal is a leading strategy for acquiring, retaining and satisfying skilled workers who provide a competitive advantage for any company. What workplace factors need to be addressed in order to create a healthy culture? Changing to a healthy culture is not easy, especially with a majority of jobs placing Americans behind a desk or in an office, working at a breakneck pace that allows no time to foster physical or mental well-being in the workplace. The habits of a more sedentary and stressful culture put employees at increased risk for developing disease and chronic conditions. Because of this, it is far more challenging for employers to keep their workers healthy in an era in which obesity, cardiovascular disease, stress and diabetes are dramatically on the rise. Focusing on keeping health care costs at

Active engagement and the ability to induce a positive health shift in the culture of your employees are key elements to successfully creating a healthy workplace culture. How can employers address those factors? Organizations that embrace their role in employee well-being can shift their investment emphasis from one of failure costs to one of detection and prevention costs. Pursuing the path of excellence in employee well-being requires the same investment that businesses make in service and quality improvement. The incidence of employee stress, illness and injury can be managed. Healthy organizations have outstanding 360-degree communication, meaningful and focused empowerment, and balance between work and personal life What steps should employers take to implement a healthy culture? n Assess the characteristics of the existing culture. n Determine the desired culture. n Communicate the desired culture to all employees. n Have management that leads by behavior. n Conduct appropriate training at all levels.

Active engagement, or true buy-in from your employees, and an organized, observable shift in your company culture are visible characteristics of successful programs that can move you in the right direction. True engagement of your team in healthy programs will result in a cultural change, just as a change in your workplace culture will steer those resisting the program unconsciously toward active participation. There are three keys to achieving true buy-in. n Lead from the top. Actions speak louder than words, so you must have senior leadership involved in health initiatives. Senior management must be actively engaged in and using wellness services. n Communicate. There must be a clear statement and clarification of new values and beliefs of the organization. Keep employees informed about the process of cultural change and allow them to be involved and to take ownership of initiatives. n Offer recognition and rewards. Make sure your policies align with your company’s vision to strengthen the clarity of the message. How can you determine if your company’s cultural changes are having the desired effect? The most successful and profitable programs have active participation or engagement by at least 60 percent of employees. Healthy cultures support the principles of changing behavior, rather than simply providing information. Individually tailored information directed at behavior change is the most effective resource, and when this style of program becomes embedded within an overall healthy workplace culture, the results are clearly visible. Achieving cultural change is not easy, and it doesn’t happen overnight. Proper preparation and systematic implementation of these steps to achieve a cultural shift can greatly improve your chances of success. Approaches combining individual initiatives with ongoing support and a philosophy centered on achieving positive behavior make good business sense. <<
