Think about seeing a lactation consultant before delivery
Prenatal Lactation Evaluation Women often ask if a prenatal lactation appointment would be helpful. My answer is a resounding YES! Often women say their greatest fear was not the delivery, but the fear they would not be able to breastfeed. At times this is due to previous problems they encountered with their first child and a goal to prevent those issues from occurring again, or because they don’t feel confident in their own ability and knowledge. Let’s face it, reading a book on breastfeeding is helpful, but truly having a plan to get you off on the right start with your baby is even better. Often my clients schedule an appointment a few weeks to months after the baby has been born when issues arise. At times there is something in their history that could have helped us lessen the problems they experienced, or at least prepared them for the possibility.
In-home prenatal consultations or FaceTime visits at minimal cost! Developing a relationship with a board certified lactation consultant, or IBCLC, which is the gold standard for lactation support prior to delivery, can help you feel confident once the baby arrives. It is so difficult for families to make these decisions when they are exhausted and breastfeeding is not going as they thought it would. With Indy Lactation Care you will then have access to us through texts, emails or calls for on-going support. Breastfeeding products and devices are rampant and costly. Meeting with an IBCLC will help you determine if you may need any of these, often prior to your delivery. We choose our OB, our Midwife and our Pediatrician before we deliver, but rarely think about who will help us establish a good breastfeeding relationship. For such a vital part of your parenting journey, adding Indy Lactation Care to your plan is well worth a call.

Prepare

Proactive care with a knowledgeable professional Not all lactation consultants have the same level of knowledge. Seek an IBCLC with years of experience that has allowed them to encounter all areas of breast anatomy and oral anatomy possible, so they can give you the care you deserve. In the hospital start skin to skin contact as soon as possible after delivery. Breastfeed without interruption and ask for support. If an IBCLC is not available call, for an appointment.
