The RIC Hearing Aid: Not Your Grandma’s BTE!

The RIC Hearing Aid: Not Your Grandma’s BTE! Once considered the least popular hearing aid, the behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid style has undergone an astounding metamorphosis, and nowhere is this more evident than in the widelyaccepted receiver-in-the-canal or RIC version of today’s BTE. Combining functionality with versatility and style, the RIC hearing aid has a receiver outside of the hearing instrument case which is placed at the end of a tube inserted into the wearer’s ear canal. Because the receiver has been removed, the case that houses the hearing aid is much smaller and fits discreetly behind the ear. As an added benefit, the thin wire housed inside the tube that connects the receiver to the case and the ear insert piece that houses the receiver are smaller than the diameter of the ear canal. This helps eliminate occlusion, or that “talking in a barrel” feeling.

The discreet receiver-in-canal style is certainly the way to go if you want to experience comfortable, natural sound without worrying about everyone noticing you are wearing a hearing aid. But you may discover that the wide range of colors the RIC hearing aid comes in are too vibrant to resist and that you might enjoy telling others about your cool new hearing aid.
