Hearing Loss Conditions The three different types of loss in hearing are conductive, sensorineural and mixed. The type that a person has is determined by the location of the damage in the ear. Conductive loss of hearing occurs when there is a problem in the ear that interferes with sound waves. It is generally caused by allergies, ear infections, and fluid inside of the middle ear, impacted earwax, and similar conditions. Hearing loss is generally a mild to moderate reduction in sound levels. This type can usually be surgically or medically corrected. Sensorineural loss of hearing occurs when there is damage to the inside of the ear, the cranial nerve, or the central processing centers of the brain. It can be caused by constant exposure to loud noise, tumors, head trauma, birth injuries, diseases and other health conditions. It can also be the result of genetics or aging. Hearing loss can range from mild to severe reduction in sound levels and the ability to hear and understand speech. This type cannot be medically corrected. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of conductive and sensorineural types. For example, ear infections along with damage to the auditory nerves or to the inner ear.
