Did You Know? While October is the tenth month of the year, its name suggests it is the eighth month. The “octo” prefix is Latin for “eight,” so why does the tenth month of the year begin with those four letters? When October was first given its name, people were following the original Roman calendar. The Roman calendar year began in March, which would make October the eighth month. September, October, November, and December’s names also were based on numeric value, as were
the original fifth and sixth months of Quintilis and Sextilis. However, when the Julian calendar was adopted, January and February were added and became the first two months of the year. Quintilis and Sextilis were renamed at this time to honor Julius Caesar (July) and Emperor Augustus (August). Despite the addition of two extra months, the remaining numeralnamed months’ names were not changed. This is why their names today no longer coincide with their true placement on the calendar. At Carter Lumber in Ludington, we make the transition into a new home as painless as possible. We have years of experience helping new residents turn their new homes into the permanent home of their dreams.

6 Home Trends To Consider
Home design and real estate trends come and go, but once in awhile certain concepts exhibit considerable staying power. Staying abreast of what’s hot and what’s not can be a bit overwhelming. This list breaks down some of the trends that have made a splash and figure to be around for some time.
1. OPEN CONCEPT SPACES: Watch the DIY
Network or HGTV and you’ll quickly understand that open floor plans remain highly coveted. Many modern, newly built homes have a large multi-purpose area that blurs the borders of the kitchen, dining area and family room. These homes make it easy to entertain and keep an eye on youngsters.
2. PATTERNED FABRICS AND UPHOLSTERY: Solids will always have their place in home decor, but patterned furnishings are making a name for themselves as well. Today’s homeowners are not afraid to experiment with geometric and floral patterns alongside neutral colors to showcase their personalities, advises the real estate industry resource The Lighter Side of Real Estate.
3. FARMHOUSE CHIC: Many people want the
ambiance of a rustic, antique farmhouse even if they live miles away from the country. Reclaimed wood on the walls, exposed beams, eclectic accessories, and a big wood table in the dining room are hallmarks of farmhouse style. This is a fun design trend that can be personalized for cozy appeal.
4. HIDDEN APPLIANCES: Making appliances
disappear into the background is a growing trend. This is achieved with products that blend in with or are hidden behind cabinetry.
5. ROW HOMES: Popularized in the 19th century 6
and then again in the 1960s and 1980s, townhouses are making another comeback. Townhomes made up about 12.4 percent of all new construction in the single-family home market last year, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. According to a Realtor. com® survey released in October 2017, townhouses were the most popular form of housing after single-family homes. They were especially popular among millennial buyers, about one-third of whom planned to purchase a townhouse in 2017.
6. MULTIGENERATIONAL HOMES: Buyers
between the ages of 53 and 62 are increasingly looking at homes that can accommodate children older than 18, with a room or apartment available to care for an aging parent, states the National Association of REALTORS®. Home trends continue to evolve, and some trends have exhibited more staying power than others. Your Next Home • October 2019

HOME Design trends come and go, but some have a funny way of resurfacing years after they first became popular. Homeowners who may have been considering renovating their home to remove a design element they believe to be passé might want to see if that feature has experienced a resurgence in popularity. In fact, one of the more derided home decor trends of yesteryear has slowly crept back into style, albeit in moderation. Wood paneling is back and better than ever, advise many design professionals. It’s the formerly ugly duckling that filled homes starting in the 1950s, creating drab dens and faux-wood family rooms. Paneling had long been an element of choice because it is relatively easy to install and can camouflage problem walls in a home, like those covered in boisterous wallpaper prints. Wood paneling reach the peak of its popularity in the 1970s, and since then homeowners have been tearing down these faux offenders for years or masking them in paint to brighten up spaces. However, the experts at Apartment Therapy report that wood paneling in shades of brown are making a comeback in cozy spots such as dens or studies. The warm tones of wood paneling elicit a retro vibe. But unlike their fake predecessors, today’s paneled walls are being outfitted in real wood, making them more ecofriendly and stylish than ever before. 8
This Design Trend Is Coming Back
Designers have flocked to reclaimed wood and veneer panelings to incorporate them into design elements. And while wood paneling used to be hung vertically, designers now experiment with hanging paneling. Many people no longer use paneling to cover an entire space. Paneling is used sparingly as an accent wall or another feature for character. Wood walls can be stained in a rich mahogany to look upscale or be weathered and rustic. Homeowners ready to re-embrace wood paneling can choose to enhance one wall in a room. Think about the space above a fireplace or a strip of wall behind a sitting chair and side table. Paneling also can serve as a headboard behind a bed in a master suite. Painted horizonally, paneling can add dimension and texture to walls, even in a bathroom. Wood paneling is slowly making a comeback, proving that no design trend every truly goes away. Your Next Home • October 2019

Benefits Of LED Outdoor Lighting
When choosing a lighting system for your home exterior, you want a durable, beautiful solution. With LED technology, you can get incredible results at an amazing value. • LONG-LASTING LED lights can last tens of thousands of hours, usually five times longer than other lights. This means that you should not need to replace an LED light for many years, making them a valuable, hassle-free investment. This is especially beneficial for outdoor lights that are difficult to reach such as those in trees or on poles.
• VERSATILITY
• ENERGY EFFICIENT
Used in a wide variety of applications, LED lighting is extremely versatile. It can be used in hot and cold environments, making it an ideal option for any use. LED lights can also produce different colors and effects through dimmable settings and controllable light distribution. With so many varieties of lights to choose from, you can achieve a soft, warm, bright or cool effect depending on your preference.
One of the greatest benefits of LED lighting is their energy efficiency. Unlike CFL and incandescent bulbs, nearly all of an LED’s energy goes toward lighting rather than heating a space. This can significantly impact your energy bill and help keep electricity costs low.
The right outdoor lighting can redefine a property, adding not only safety and security but expanding the use of the yard and beautifying the space. Whether starting from scratch or retrofitting an existing yard, the trend to consider includes installing LED lights.
• DURABILITY If you have ever handled an LED light, you might have an idea of how durable they are. One of the benefits of LED lighting that makes it so effective in the outdoors is its ability to withstand wind, rain and exposure.

HOME Costume-clad kids, bags of candy and jack-o’lanterns are some indelible images associated with Halloween. Those images may forever be linked to this beloved, fun-filled holiday, which boasts a rich history that varies depending on where in the world you might be. Celebrations around the world may not mirror those in the United States, where trickor-treating youngsters travel from house to house in search of candy. But true Halloween enthusiasts may be interested to learn the history of the holiday and how it has changed over the centuries. EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS In parts of Mexico and Latin America, El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is celebrated each year in early November. The day is designed to honor the dead, who Day of the Dead celebrants believe return to their earthly homes each Halloween. Families may burn candles and incense in an effort to help their deceased relatives and ancestors find their way home. GUY FAWKES DAY For many years, England had reason to celebrate around October 31, but those celebrations did not mirror the Halloween festivities familiar to those across the pond. While recent years have witnessed more and more Brits adopting the Americanized celebration of Halloween, for many the true holiday this time of year will always be Guy Fawkes Day. Celebrated on November 5, Guy Fawkes Day is a commemoration of the foiled Gunpowder Plot. Smithsonian notes that this 12
Halloween Boasts A Rich History
was a failed attempt by disgruntled Catholics to blow up the British Parliament building while King James I was inside. Fireworks, parades and bonfires marked Guy Fawkes Day celebrations, which in recent years have gradually begun to transform into something that more closely resembles American Halloween. SAMHAIN History.com notes that Halloween can trace its origins to Ireland. But those origins did not involve giggling youngsters carrying plastic pumpkins around in search of candy. Halloween’s origins can be traced to the Celtic festival of Samhain. Samhain was considered the Celtic New Year and was sacred to the ancient Irish. The festival was celebrated as the days became shorter, and offerings were left for the dead, who celebrants believed could cross over into the land of the living at this time. However, they also believed demonic spirits could follow such a path during Samhain, giving the festival the taste of the macabre that many still enjoy imparting on their Halloween celebrations today. Halloween has a rich and interesting history that gals and ghouls from all walks of life might find interesting. Your Next Home • October 2019

Halloween Fast Facts And Figures
Halloween is celebrated in various countries. Halloween can trace its origins to Ireland and is based on the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, during which people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off spirits. Halloween has since become a day to play pranks and don costumes while going door-to-door seeking treats from neighbors. Each year, the National Retail Federation tracks Halloween trends. The figures and statistics shared by the NRF and other organizations paint a picture of just how popular Halloween can be. • Consumers will spend an estimated $9 billion on Halloween. The average, American will spend $86.79 on the festivities, according to the NRF. • The U.S. Census Bureau indicates that there are 41.1 million potential trick-or-treaters aged 5 to 14. • Ninety-five percent of people surveyed by the NRF planned to purchase candy for Halloween. The next most popular purchase is decorations (74 percent). • Forty-five percent of respondents planned to carve a pumpkin for Halloween, says the NRF. • In Canada, there are 2,569 farms with pumpkin patches, according to the 2016 Census of Agriculture. • The top-ranked costumes for children in 2018 were princess and superhero. Adults planning to dress up were more likely to go as a witch or a vampire. • Data from domestic box office earnings of horror movies in 2018 totaled $752.2 million. This accounts for movie earnings in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Guam. “A Quiet Place” and “Halloween” were the top-grossing horror flicks of the year. October 2019 • Your Next Home
• The ubiquitous “pumpkin spice” starts to turn up in various products as soon as there are hints of autumn. Nielsen says $6.9 million was spent on pumpkin spice products in 2018. • Candy corn is either loved or loathed. According to the National Confectioners Association, 42.7 percent of people who enjoy candy corn say they eat the narrow white part of the candy corn first. • The NRF states that, when looking for their ideal costumes, 33 percent of consumers will check online first, followed closely by 29 percent in stores. • Pet costumes remain incredibly popular. Prosper Insights, a marketing and analytics company, states that 31.2 million Americans plan to dress up their pets — with millennials being the largest demographic to do so. • There are potentially 120 million stops for trick-ortreaters to visit in the United States, based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau. • The Manufacturing and Wholesale Trade Division in Canada says that there were 158 businesses engaged in formal wear and costume rentals in Canada in 2017. Halloween is frighteningly popular, with scores of people taking part in the spending and antics of this entertaining day.

HOME Nutrition and Halloween do not necessarily go hand in hand. While many parents may go to great lengths to ensure their youngsters’ Halloween treats offer at least a little nutritional value, the bulk of costumed kids’ hauls still tends to be candy. Pumpkin seeds are one delicious yet often overlooked Halloween treat. According to Healthline, an online medical resource that aims to educate readers as they pursue their health and overall well-being, pumpkin seeds provide a host of health benefits. Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture indicates that a single cup of pumpkin seeds can provide as much as 22 percent of a person’s daily recommended value of dietary fiber. In addition, pumpkin seeds are loaded with vitamin K, which plays a role in blood clotting and bone metabolisms and helps to regulate blood calcium levels. Pumpkin seeds tend to be easily accessible come Halloween, as they’re right inside the pumpkins many who celebrate this ghoulish holiday turn into jack-o’-lanterns. When carving pumpkins this Halloween, people can forgo relegating pumpkin seeds to the garbage can in favor of cooking them. The following are some tips, courtesy of Whole Foods, to help Halloween celebrants prepare and cook pumpkin seeds. • Remove seeds from the inner cavity. Pumpkin seeds may sometimes be covered in excess pulp. Upon removing the seeds from the inner cavity, wipe off the pulp and then spread the seeds out evenly on a paper bag, allowing them to dry overnight. • Place the seeds in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Once the seeds have dried, they can be placed in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Roast the seeds in the oven at a temperature between 160 and 170 F for 15 to 20 minutes. Whole Foods notes researchers found that roasting pumpkin 14
How To Prepare And Cook Pumpkin Seeds
seeds for more than 20 minutes can lead to unwanted changes in the fat structure of the seeds. To avoid such changes, make sure the seeds are not roasted for more than 20 minutes. Once they have been roasted, pumpkin seeds can be served as-is as a delicious snack. Whole Foods notes that seeds also can be sprinkled into mixed green salads. Pumpkin seeds can even be ground with fresh garlic, parsley and cilantro leaves and then mixed with olive oil and lemon juice to create a delicious salad dressing. Chopped pumpkin seeds also can be added to cereals. This Halloween, don’t forget to add a little nutrition to celebrations by roasting some pumpkin seeds. Your Next Home • October 2019

HOME Fall is a refreshing, beautiful time of the year. Reap great rewards from your gardening plots by planting a garden in the fall. You should also take some time to get your spring off to a great start by planting more bulbs. • Turfgrass, spring-blooming bulbs, coolseason vegetables, perennials, trees, and shrubs • Many vegetables such as green beans, broccoli, brussels sprouts, carrots, cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, radishes, rutabaga, spinach, and Swiss chard. Some benefits to planting in the fall instead of spring: • Autumn’s cooler air temperatures are easier on both plants and gardeners. • The soil is still warm, allowing roots to grow until the ground freezes. In spring, plants don’t grow until the soil warms up. • The late season is usually bargain time at garden centers that are trying to sell the last of their inventory before winter. • Some pests and disease problems fade away in the fall Watch the weather and make a planting plan. • Always consult the seed packet to see how many days it takes until maturity, and count backward from your frost date to allow enough time. 16
Fall Planting Ideas And Tips
The window for fall planting ends about six weeks before your area gets hit with a hard frost, usually September or October. • Try to plant in the morning when it is cooler out. • Overcast days when humidity is higher are best, when the sun isn’t as harsh. • To prevent weeds growing near your bulbs or plants apply an inch or two of mulch to the surface of your planting area. This will help prevents weeds from breaking through the soil surface, and stop the weeds from getting any nutrients from the soil. • Water your plants right after planting to help them start taking root. Water them an inch each week after planting unless you have had recent rainfall. Apply fertilizer at the first sign of growth. Fertilizer should also be applied once the leaves start dying back. Did You Know? The style of beer most widely consumed during Oktoberfest celebrations can be traced to a time before refrigeration was available. According to the online beer resource BeerAdvocate.com, brewing beer in the summertime was nearly impossible in the days before refrigeration. Hot weather and the risk of bacterial infections complicated brewing in summer, so many brewers would cease brewing beer in spring and begin again in the fall when temperatures dropped. As a result, the beers available for Oktoberfest celebrations were the Märzen style of
beer, or those brewed in the month of March, shortly before brewing ceased for the season. These Märzen beers were kept in cold storage throughout the spring and summer or brewed at a higher gravity so they would keep and be available for consumption during Oktoberfest celebrations. Such brewing restrictions were no longer necessary after refrigeration became commonplace and made it possible to brew beer year-round, but there’s still a strong chance that steins being hoisted during this year’s Oktoberfest celebrations will be filled with Märzenstyle beers.

HOME The advice by many experts regarding fall pruning is “DON’T DO IT” as it can cause more harm than good. • Pruning in the fall would stimulate new growth when a plant should be trying to go dormant. • New growth weakens the plant which is not what a plant needs when it is heading into winter. • Fall pruning creates a wound that can result in a more severe winterkill GOOD TIME TO PRUNE • Middle of winter or early spring if you absolutely can’t stop yourself. • When it is sunny and dry as pruning while it is wet/damp outside will cause diseases to spread. Damp weather promotes mold and bacteria. • In the spring once a plant has finished flowering. PRUNING TOO MUCH • Most plants don’t require pruningFruit trees and overgrown shrubs are really the only thing that requires it and helps them to produce more fruits and flowers. 18

PRUNING FOCUS • Dead or dying branches • Low hanging branches • Prune back to the main stem Leaving a stub sticking out opens your tree or shrub up to bacteria or gives insects a home. Your Next Home • October 2019

HOME Let’s face it: pets are bound to get into a little trouble around the house. But from its open canisters to its loose wires, your home can pose some serious problems for your furry companions. While cats like to crawl into small nooks and crannies, dogs prefer chewing and consuming anything they can get their paws on. So, what’s a pet owner to do? You can help your pets stay safe — and safeguard your home décor — with these simple pet-proofing tips. 1. KEEP THE TOILET CLOSED Since cats and dogs are always on the lookout for a cool water source, some pets view toilet water as a tasty solution. Not only is toilet water extremely dirty, but it also contains potent chemicals that can lead to pet poisoning. This dangerous situation can be avoided by keeping your toilets closed when they’re not in use. 2. LAY A BLANKET ON IT You can protect your beloved furniture with throw blankets! Drape one over your couch or place one on your bed to create a cozy space for your pets to rest. Soft to the touch, these blankets act as a barrier, preventing pet hair, mud, and even claw marks from ruining your favorite furnishings. 3. KNOW YOUR HOUSEPLANTS If your home is full of flora, you may want to reconsider some of your houseplants. Why? Over 200 plant varieties are extremely toxic to pets. When ingested by animals, certain plants (including irises, azaleas and Easter lilies) can cause gastrointestinal distress and can even result in death. To keep your pets out of peril, swap out unsafe plant life with any of these nontoxic options: - African Violets - Begonias - Daisies Draecenas - Ferns - Impatiens - Orchids - Roses - Snapdragons - Spider Plants 4. DISCOURAGE COUNTER-SURFING PETS Counter-surfing is a common behavior that some pet owners can’t stand. Luckily, you can break the habit a few different ways. Try lining the edges of your countertops with doublesided tape, bubble wrap, or aluminum foil. Because both cats and dogs have sensitive paw pads, they will avoid touching surfaces that are sticky, coarse, or uneven. In just a couple of weeks, counter-surfing will no longer be a concern. 5. CONTROL THOSE CORDS Pets and cables just don’t mix. While many pets find pleasure in chewing on electrical cords, they put themselves in harm’s way with each nibble. You can remove the temptation altogether by covering loose cables with a Flexiduct Cord Cover. Made with abrasion-resistant plastic, this durable

cover hides exposed cords from pets in plain sight. Another way to discourage cord chewing is by coating your cords in Masterpaws® Chew Stop All-Natural Bitter Spray or Irish Spring® Original Deodorant Soap. Each solution will protect your cords by masking them in an unpleasant aroma that also leaves a bitter taste in your pet’s mouth. 6. PUT PET GATES IN PLACE Set some boundaries at home with pet gates. When you’re busy making dinner or folding laundry, it can be difficult to keep your eyes on those pets. Rather than track their every move, you can contain the situation with a pet gate or two. A Carlson™ Extra-Tall Pet Gate will limit their access to certain areas of your house by barring doorways or stairwells. For truly devious dogs, you can also try a Carlson™ Convertible Pet Gate. Made of chew-proof metal, this freestanding gate configures to fit any room, providing your pets with a temporary play space when supervision isn’t possible. 7. STOP TRASH ATTACKS Pets love stealing things from the garbage. So, to stop them from eating and swallowing something unsavory, you should consider upgrading your trash cans. Ideally, you’ll want something with a lid. Step-on wastebaskets are excellent choices because most pets don’t understand that they have to step on the foot pedal to open or close the trash bin. 8. REMOVE LAUNDRY ROOM HAZARDS The laundry room is a dangerous place for pets, especially cats. Known for their heat-seeking tendencies, cats are always looking for a warm place to rest. You can prevent your cat from climbing inside your washing machine and/or dryer by always keeping the doors shut. And before you start your next load of laundry, sweep the interior to make sure your cat isn’t hiding in there. Your Next Home • October 2019
Did You Know? Carpet can add warmth and texture to a room and also provide a little bit of soundproofing. Underfoot, carpeting can be more comfortable than other types of flooring, even though it may require more upkeep. Carpet comes in various forms, but here are the main material components. • Nylon: This is one of the most durable and stain-resistant carpet fibers available and a popular choice among many homeowners. • Polyester: Carpeting can be made from polyester, which
is fashioned to feel and look luxurious. • Olefin: Olefin is made from polypropylene or polyethylene. It is prized for its strength, resistance to staining and colorfastness. It is often suited well to loop pile or high, dense cut piles. • Wool: Wool is durable, albeit less resistant to soiling than some other materials. However, because it is an all-natural material, it is prized by people who want natural beauty.

HOME Old homes can be charming and contain architectural elements not often seen in many modern housing developments. But what older homes may have in design appeal, they may lack in updated features. While cosmetic changes are not necessarily difficult, one area of concern in historic homes — and sometimes even in houses built 40 or 50 years ago — is archaic wiring. Wiring provides power to every room of the home. In today’s electronicsdriven society, electricity that works is an essential component of daily life. Over time, wiring can be compromised through simple aging, pest infiltration, weather, or other conditions. Deteriorated wiring can present a shock hazard and also a serious fire hazard, warn the home renovation experts at The Spruce. Furthermore, the home improvement site This Old House advises that the amperage of old wiring may not be able to meet the needs of the devices used in homes — overpowering the circuits. This can cause breaker blowouts and other problems, such as overheated wires that may spark and cause fires from within the wall. Wiring often falls into the “out of sight, out of mind” category. Homeowners may make allowances for inadequate electrical systems, such as running extension cords or using multiplug connectors to increase their wiring capacity. However, they may not be diligently keeping on top of upgrades needed to stay safe. Confirming that a home’s electrical system is safe is a necessary part of home maintenance. For those who haven’t already done so, schedule an inspection with a licensed electrician to go over the home’s wiring. He or she can determine if any areas pose a safety risk and/or do not conform to local code requirements and the National Electrical Code. Failure to meet code can lead to difficulty obtaining permits to make other home renovations, or difficulty selling a home later on. The electrician can also go over improvements that can improve safety and function. Additional 22
Time To Replace Old Wiring?
outlets, including GFCI outlets in kitchens and bathrooms, may be part of the plan, as well as rewiring a fuse box or circuit panel to allow for better flow of power around the house. Frayed wiring or underinsulated wiring also may need to be replaced. Owners of old homes should recognize possible electrical system dangers that require attention. Plus, considering electrical codes change quite frequently, it is always in a homeowner’s best interest to work with a qualified electrician to keep wiring inspected and up to date.
