Jessica L. Gottschalk Skylar Janssen 3 1. Current job title/responsibilities: My current job title is director of nursing services (DON) for our 112-bed skilled nursing facility. I have been the DON for the last nine months. And it has been a FAST nine months. Before that I acted as the assistant director of nursing (ADON), so due to my predecessors, I had a fairly seamless transition, apart from the pandemic hitting. The main difference in my duties as the ADON compared with that of my current role, is that my responsibilities have shifted from more of a clinical aspect to a more administrative aspect. I continue to oversee and coordinate the care for all our residents, however, now I am more involved with the developing and implementing of policies and procedures to assure the highest standards of care and evidenced-based practices. I oversee and manage the nursing department, which consists of approximately 100 staff give or take. I work closely with our administrator in overseeing the nursing budget. Working as a liaison for other departments is often another responsibility of mine, as nursing is generally the core of all functions in the facility. I also complete a lot of odds and ends in the nursing home that would bore anyone to elaborate on.

Age: 38 Spouse/Children: My husband is Anthony Gottschalk, and my three daughters are Isabella (11), Calleigh (8) and Liv (5). Hometown: Originally from Ashland, Ohio but grew up in Kinde. Employer: Huron County Medical Care Facility for the last 13 years.

2. What is the best aspect of your job? There are two aspects to my job that I simply cannot choose between as being best. First are the residents. We take care of some of the most respected, hard-working, wisest people in our community. It is so rewarding to be able to give back to the community by providing quality of life in a place that truly nobody wants to end up in. And second, the staff. I have a truly amazing group of staff that work in our building. Everyone works so hard toward one goal — and that is to provide the best care to our residents that we can. Furthermore, my administrative nurses are like my second family. If I shine in my role, it is literally only because I have the best team of girls a DON could have. 3. Why is your community a good place to live and work? I love living and working in Huron County. I love that most everyone treats you like their neighbor. I love how generous and giving our community can be. There is certainly something to be said about a small community. 4. What one person has influenced you the most? While my parents instilled good values in my siblings and I, and showed us what hard work looks like, the one person who currently influences me the most is my husband. He dreams huge! He sets goals and he never stops working toward them. He takes pride in absolutely everything he does. He drives me to keep working hard and aiming high.

4

5. What is your biggest goal in life? My biggest goal is to raise three beautiful, intelligent daughters into strong independent woman someday. 6. What do you do to relieve stress? Truthfully, probably not many healthy things. I do enjoy getting outside and walking though. I enjoy time with friends and family, playing cards, going to the beach, playing cornhole, riding our ATV with the kids, going on vacations. 7. What are your three favorite movies? My three favorite movies are: most any DC comic movie, Indiana Jones and Back to the Future. 8. Name a book that has influenced you. I am ashamed to admit that I do not read as much as I should. However, podcasts are relatively new to me and they are something I have been filling the silence with on the way to and from work — Andy Frisella is a good inspirational speaker, keeps things simple and drives people to focus on habits that create success. 9. If you could be any fictional character, who would it be? I would be Wonder Woman. She is strong and gorgeous, and it would be so awesome to have superpowers. 10. What quote do you live by? “Time is precious, waste it wisely.”

I enjoy having the opportunity to work with my husband on a daily basis. Some spouses would have a difficult time with being with their spouse while at work, but I really enjoy it. I miss seeing so many of our customers since the restaurant shut down and cannot wait to see them all again soon! Also I enjoy being active in a job, instead of sitting at a desk or driving all day.
