BASKETBALL PREVIEWS

BEARDSTOWN BOYS BASKETBALL

Coach: Eric Anderson

Last year’s record: 9-20

Key losses: William Davids meier (11 ppg, 7 rpg)

Returning starters: Senior guard Owen Quigley (11 ppg), junior point guard Isaac Brockschmidt (7 ppg)

Key newcomers: Lucas Domitien (senior guard), Mi cah Wink (senior forward), Elizah Thomas (junior guard)

Newcomers: Ansgar Huhn (junior forward), Christy Domitien (junior forward), Rylan Alhorn (junior center)

Season outlook: “We want to establish more of an identity this season. Last year we nev er really found something that we could stand on and build off of. This year I think we are more connected, which should help our flow offen sively and allow us to turn up the pressure defensively. “Our lack of size concerns me on the glass and in the post, but we control what we can control. It just means we need to rebound collectively and emphasize positioning and tenacity. “Shooting in today’s game is a premium. We stress player development and knocking down shots is a big key to be able to space the floor. Our shooters need

to make shots at a higher clip, and part of that is technique, but a more important part to increase efficiency is shot se lection and ball/player move ment to create those better looks. “I like our buy-in right now, though. Our leadership has been good, and we’ll see if our depth, expanding roles, and mix of new faces can give us that identity we lacked last season.”

BEARDSTOWN GIRLS BASKETBALL

Coach: Jimmy Maltby

Last year’s record: 11-19

Key losses: Ferin Carlock (led team in assists and steals), McKenna Maltby (led team in three-point percentage, made threes and free throws)

Returning starters: Senior Bertille Kayembe (11 ppg, 10 rpg). “Bertille is a twoyear starter, voted team MVP last year. Averaged double/double. Most athletic player I have coached. Had three games last year with a 20-point, 20-rebound perfor mances. We look for more of her dominance in the paint on both ends of the floor for us this year. Bertille is one of our leaders and will be a big reason for a successful season for the Lady Tigers.” Senior Chrinovie Kandua (4 ppg 7 rpg). “Chrinovie is a lead

er and will be the key to our defense. Communicates well and very athletic. Look for Chrinovie to improve greatly offensively this season.”New comers: Senior Genesis Pe rales. “Genesis is arguably our best shooter on the team. Genesis put the time in the gym this past summer and improved her entire game. We look for big things from her, especially from the offen sive side of the floor.”

Senior outlook: The 2022-23 season will have some bumps in the road, but with the lead ership from our senior play ers to help with the under classman, we should compete in every game. This group of seniors have put the time in and improved every season. Must replace entire backcourt from last season. We will turn to Genesis Perales, Ari Garcia and Chrinovie Kandua for the replacement, also bringing freshman Andrea Flynn up slowly for the point guard po sition. Lady Tigers will have a successful season if we can take care of the ball and get our post players the touches they need and deserve. One of those post players is Bertil le Kayembe. She will be lock ing down the lane for us. She gives us a dominant presence in the lane offensively and defensively. I am super excit ed about the upcoming sea son to see this team improve

night in and night out.”

Markert (sophomore for ward), Melanie Loehr (senior guard), Isabel Duarte (sopho more guard), Kyndel Painter (sophomore guard), Morgan Wegs (senior forward). “Ash lee Markert will need to be big for us in the post this year. With the loss of Gabby Mc Gath and Cornti Law we will expect her to play a huge role inside for us. Melanie Loehr, Isabel Duarte and Kyndel Painter will be called upon to play significant minutes on the perimeter for us this year.”

Season outlook: “We won’t be as deep as we have been in the past two seasons, but we have a nice core group of girls. Put ting pressure on the ball will continue to be a priority for us. I expect us to compete for both the WIVC crown and a regional championship.”

CALHOUN BOYS BASKETBALL

Coach: Casey Longnecker

Last year’s record: 8-22 (2-7 WIVC)

Season outlook: “We had a lot of boys get a lot of experi ence last year due to COVID and injuries. We only had one player play in all 30 games. We had only two that played over 20 games. We will still be a young ball club, and it will be a grind in the highly competitive WIVC. We hope to compete in these games and a tough non-conference schedule.”

CALHOUN  GIRLS BASKETBALL

ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.1 apg, 1.1 spg), sophomore center Kate Zip prich (8.7 ppg, 9.4 ppg, 2.2 bpg)

Key newcomers: Haley Schnelten (senior guard, transfer), Gracie Klaas (junior guard/forward), Claire Hagen (junior guard), Anna Oswald (sophomore forward), Emma Hoemmen (junior guard). “Haley brings a lot of varsity experience from Carrollton. A great defender and solid scoring threat. Gracie is ca pable of playing a shooting guard or forward and runs the floor well, rebounds well. Claire is a shooter with some height that will be counted on for consistent varsity minutes. Anna can play a three-guard or forward and has a knack for making things happen on offense. Emma Hoem men brings another shooting threat off the bench.”

Season outlook: “After a great start to last season at 15-5, we had a rough finish to the regular season. We want to avoid having a lull like we did in 2021-22 to finish 6-7 in our last 13 games. With us returning four starters from the regional championship squad that also faced one of the best 1A teams in the state last year (Okawville) in the sectional semifinal, we gained some valuable experience for this season and future sea sons. We expect to improve on our record from last year. We want to be in the mix for the WIVC championship this season. We did not graduate a ton of statistics with our seniors from last season, but we graduated a lot of leader ship qualities that helped us get out to such a good start, despite playing a lot of fresh men.”

CARROLLTON BOYS BASKETBALL

Coach: Tony Rhoades

Last year’s record: 14-15 (4-5 WIVC)

Key losses: Kyle Leonard (21 ppg, 6 rpg), Gus Coonrod (10

ppg, 8 rpg), Grant Pohlman (7 ppg, 7 rpg)

Returning starters: Senior forward Kaiden Breckon (7 ppg, 45 made 3-pointers), ju nior center Braylon Rhoades (6 ppg, 5 rpg)

Key newcomers: Bobby Heath (senior forward), Ty ler Singleton (senior guard), Matt Biermann (senior for ward), Bryson Baumgartner (senior guard), Caleb How ard (junior guard), Konnor Campbell (junior center), Karson Kraushaar (junior guard), Wyatt Settles (junior forward), Holden Haydon (junior guard), Lucas How ard (sophomore forward), Carson Grafford (sophomore guard)

Season outlook: “We have very good competition/depth at the guard position, and I am looking forward to how it plays out throughout the season. Everyone is working really hard and pushing each other. Ball handling will be our biggest question mark, since we lost an all-state point guard (Kyle Leonard). However, our guards are very ready to step up and take con trol. Our size will be our big gest strength -- we will have a 6-6, 6-5 and 6-4 trio on the floor playing heavy minutes -- so we should be a very good rebounding team. We expect to make great strides this season, since it is the first season for me that we have ac tually gotten to practice more than twice before we play. As a first-year coach during COVID, it was difficult since we couldn’t be with the team

at all and then, suddenly, we were were allowed to start playing. Then, last year after a great state championship runner-up run in football, the entire team was quarantined for two weeks, and once that was over, we had one practice, then started games. For this coming season, I have really enjoyed being able to be on the court three weeks before starting games and hopefully have a COVID-free year.”

Season outlook: “These girls have worked very hard, and we are fortunate to have great leadership on the team. We lost three girls who played a lot of varsity basketball during their high school ca reers, so we will need to have girls step in and fill some im portant roles.”

JACKSONVILLE BOYS BASKETBALL

Coach: J.R. Dugan

There are some very talented young players in our program that should help to continue pushing the program forward and up.”

Outlook: “We will be a com petitive team night in and

night out. I think we will be a .500 or better team and will be a top five team in the CS8. We are at the Taylor ville Thanksgiving Tourna ment and Charleston Hol iday Tournament this year. We have to continue to grow as a unit offensively and de fensively. This group is the furthest along offensively we have had in my four years here at JHS but can still get better. We have shown last year and again this summer that we can play with anyone in the area and on our sched ule. The next step is moving from just playing and being competitive with those teams to winning.”

Season outlook: “The Lady Routt Rockets lost some great senior leadership of Addie Dobson, Caitlyn Horney and Audrey Huffman from this past season, but have a good core group of new seniors ready to lead the way. Depth will come from the post play down low this season and ag gressive crashing the boards. I think we may surprise some teams this year with our abil ity to move the ball. We will need to con stantly look to improve on our defense and rebounding, as that will take us as far as we want to go. Will need work on limiting turnover as we look to play with pace. Returners: Senior forward Ryan Snow (14.9 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.0 apg), senior forward Aiden Neathery (10.0 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.9 apg), senior guard Jake Mueller (5.2 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.4 apg), senior forward Trev in Littleton (1.3 ppg, 1.0 rpg), junior forward KJ Beck (2.7 ppg, 1.5 rpg)

Newcomers: Austin Strubbe (junior guard), Steven Reyn olds (junior guard), Brock York (sophomore guard), David Richards (sophomore forward), Caleb Carpenter (sophomore guard), Zach French (junior guard). “These newcomers will provide depth off the bench, and ball handling. A lot of good ath letes to come in and play great ‘D’ and give us some speed up and down the floor.”

Season outlook: “I feel like we return a very good nu cleus, with four players who got a lot of minutes last year. We are pretty tall across the floor with all starters over 6 foot, and Beck at center at

6-6. Newcomers should pro vide more depth, so we want to play more up-tempo and try to score in transition. Like always, we will be as good as our defense, and we feel like we can be a strong defensive ball club with the right mind set. We have a lot of youth who are trying to earn some minutes so the competition at practice has been great. Hopefully, we will have some guys prove themselves early to earn minutes and create a deep bench as the season progresses. The conference is loaded with many terrific teams so it should be an in teresting season as the WIVC plays out, but we feel we can contend again.”

TRIOPIA GIRLS BASKETBALL

Coach: Kelley Wessler

Last year’s record: 9-16 over all (2-6 WIVC)

Key loss: Hailey Reynolds (8.3 ppg, 4.1 rpg)

Returning starters: Senior guard Megan Reynolds (10.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg,), junior forward Lilly Pate (4 ppg, 4.5 rpg), sophomore post Addison Rohn

Key newcomers: Lindy Parli er (sophomore guard), Raye Greenstreet (sophomore forward), Lucie Dion (fresh man shooting guard). “The dynamic of the newcomers will bring positive energy, strength, ball handling, and speed.”

Season outlook: “The girls have been eager to buy into the new system of a brandnew coach. The core group of returning players has paired well with some new faces to combine quickness, size and strength that will continue to develop as the year progress es.”

WEST CENTRAL BOYS BASKETBALL

Coach: Ryan Sichting

Last year’s record: 22-11 (6-3 WIVC)

Losses: Tysyn Mast: (13.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2.9 apg, 3.1 spg), Lathan Barnett, Payton Hart ley, Cole Meyer, Jackson Ford, Parker Hoots, and Jack Fry

Returning varsity experience: Junior Zack Evans (17.5 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.8 apg, 2.0 spg), se nior Tyson Brown (7.0 ppg, 3.6 rpg), junior Chance Lit tle (6.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg), senior Jaydon Howard (4.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg), junior Mason Berry

Other varsity players: Senior Rylen Shaw, juniors Derek Price and Conner Turner, and sophomores Carson Brown, Dalton Hutton, and Cameron Sievers

Outlook: “We have more re turning experience returning on this year’s team compared to a season ago. We are going to try to score out of transi tion as much as possible. This team has the ability to defend at a high level. We have sever al players that have the ability to make perimeter shots and

get to the basket off the drib ble. We will use our speed and athleticism to our advantage. If we can play well defensively and rebound, then I feel like we can compete with any op ponent we play against.”

WEST CENTRAL GIRLS BASKETBALL

Coach: Jason Likes

Last year’s record: 11-17 (3-4 WIVC)

Key losses: Emma Smith and Laura Garrett

Returning starters: Sopho more forward Brylee Lawson

Key newcomers: Gabby Sievers (senior guard), Elise Brown (senior guard), Jay da Rogers (senior guard), Bryleigh Fox (junior guard), Trystan White (junior guard), Braylee Littig (freshman guard), Adrienne Kaufmann (freshman guard), Sofie Grubb (freshman guard).

“The upperclassmen are re turning after taking a year or more off, so I’m expecting great leadership. The new comers all bring some form of speed, high level offense, and or high level defense. In addition, we gain great depth off the bench.”

Season outlook: “I have high expectations for this team. We have both great post and guard play. I expect them to defend well and to use speed to their advantage. Overall, I think they will be fun to coach and watch.”
