EDWARDSVILLE — Adapting — like everyone — the Edwardsville Arts Center has found its way to connect. There was never a better time to stay anchored than now, Edwardsville Arts Center’s Gallery Manager Carolyn Tidball noted. “We are working to adapt how we connect with patrons during this time,” she said. “The health and safety of all who come to the center and attend our events is extremely important to us. Our gallery is currently closed for in-person visits, but we are still hosting art classes and exhibitions online.” Edwardsville Arts Center built an entirely new website, with help this summer from a high school intern who took photographs to upload to EAC’s recently rebuilt website, www.edwardsvilleartscenter.com. The intern photographed all of the artwork exhibited at the nonprofit Edwardsville gallery, 6165 Center Grove Road, for the site, where all available classes also are listed and linked for easy

access to the public. “In the summer we realized that we needed to do everything online,” said Tidball, of Edwardsville, who began working at the gallery in 2014; the gallery opened in 2011. “The former site was not really set up for that. We had to use third party websites for signing up for things. Now, everything we do, you can sign up for and do on our new website. You can join classes, view exhibits, purchase from the Gallery Shop and access our free Saturday art tutorials, all available online, geared for a virtual experience.” Tidball added a few more virtual classes in recent days, but the Edwardsville Arts Center has held virtual classes since May. EAC will have yet more classes for fall, available at the website, which is the same URL as always — edwardsvilleartscenter.com. Every Saturday, at 10 a.m., the EAC posts its tutorials online, as well as on its Facebook page and via email to anyone on its email list. “In March and April, we were not really

How to recognize when you can stop mowing

Each weekend in spring, summer and fall, millions of homeowners fire up their mowers and cut the grass in their yards. A few hours spent mowing the lawn can be a great time to get some sun and some exercise in the great outdoors. As fall gradually transitions to winter, homeowners may wonder when to stop mowing their lawns. Each lawn is different, and when to stop mowing may depend on a host of factors, including local climate and the type of turf. In addition to climate and turf, homeowners can keep an eye on these conditions to determine when the time is right to put their mowers away for the winter. • Frost: Warm-season grasses typically go dormant after a couple of significant frosts. Homeowners can jot down each frost during fall. Frosts are most noticeable in the early morning hours, so be sure to check lawn conditions each morning as the weather begins to grow cold. Frost may be noticeable without even going outside, but homeowners may

need to go outside to check on chilly mornings or on days when the previous night was especially cold. If you must go outside, stay off the grass to protect it. Two or three frosts might be enough to make warm-season grasses go dormant for the winter. Cool-season grasses may keep growing and require moving even after a few frosts, so it’s imperative that homeowners determine which type of grass is in their yards. • Soil temperature: If it’s hard to determine if frosts have occurred, homeowners can try checking the temperature of their soil to decide if they need to keep mowing. The lawn care experts at Pennington recommend homeowners continue mowing warm-season grasses so long as they keep growing. Lawns may not grow as quickly in fall as they do in spring or summer, and growth may not be as visible to the naked eye during this time of year as it is in other times. Homeowners can routinely check soil temperature to determine if their grasses have stopped growing.

Warm-season grasses tend to stop growing once the soil temperature is consistently at 55 F or below, while coolseason grasses tend to stop when temperatures are 45 F or lower. Falling leaves have long been a barometer used by homeowners to determine if they need to keep mowing their lawns. That’s not necessarily a reliable metric, as grass can still keep growing even if leaves have been falling for weeks. In addition, using a mulching mower when leaves begin falling is a great way to provide the lawn with nutrients it can use throughout the winter. Some trees shed their leaves more quickly than others, but it’s a good rule of thumb that lawns will need to keep being mowed if trees are still retaining more than half their leaves. A host of factors can help homeowners determine when it’s safe to put their mowers away for the winter.

How to save up for your first home

Home ownership is a dream for people across the globe. Many people save for years before buying their first homes, squirreling away every dollar they can with the hopes they can one day become homeowners. But thanks to factors beyond their control, even the most devoted savers can sometimes feel like their dream of home ownership may never come true. According to the Pew Research Center, American workers’ paychecks are larger than they were 40 years ago, but their purchasing power is essentially the same. Things aren’t much different in Canada, where analysis from Statistics Canada and the Bank of Canada has shown that, since 2015, wage growth in Canada has been weaker than in the United States. Various challenges can make it difficult to buy a home. However, some simple strategies can help prospective home buyers build their savings as they move closer to

the day when they can call themselves “homeowners.” • Determine where your money is going. If you’re finding it hard to grow your savings, audit your monthly expenses to determine where your money is going. Using exclusively debit or credit cards can simplify this process, as all you need to do is log into your accounts and see how your money was spent over a given period. If you routinely use cash to pay for items, even just to buy coffee on the way to work, keep a notepad handy so you can jot down each expense. Do this for a month and then examine how you spent your money. Chances are you will see various ways to save, and you can then redirect that money into your savings account. • Become a more savvy grocery shopper. Another great way to save more money is to alter something you already do each month: grocery shopping. If you haven’t already, sign up for discount clubs at your local grocer.

This is a largely effortless way for shoppers, especially those buying food for families, to save considerable amounts of money. Shopping sales at competing grocery stores also can save money. • Dine in more often. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that Americans spend, on average, 6 percent of their household budgets on food. However, the USDA also notes that Americans spend 5 percent of their disposable income on dining out. If these figures mirror your spending habits, you can nearly cut your food spending in half by dining out less frequently. That might be a sacrifice for foodies, but it can get you that much closer to buying your own home. Saving enough money to purchase your first home is a worthy effort that can be made easier by employing a few budget-friendly strategies.

Bring more natural light into a home

Maximizing natural light in a home is a smart and sometimes low-cost renovation. Homes that are dark and drab can drain energy levels and reduce productivity. In addition, dark rooms may not be inviting places to gather as a family or when entertaining. Certain factors contribute to a dark home. Houses that face north or east may not get the same level of sunlight as those that primarily face south and west. Geographic location also plays a role in the amount of natural sunlight. Mountains, buildings and even latitude can affect the amount of natural light that enters a home. The style of a home and its attributes also may create dark conditions. Deep house eaves as well as small windows or too few windows also can contribute to a deficit of light indoors. A major remodel certainly can remedy the situation. However, there also are other lessextensive strategies to improve natural light. • A s s e s s t h e s i t u a t i o n b e f o re

renovating. Walk around the house and determine which rooms get the most light and which conditions may be contributing to the problem in other areas. Dark floors and walls may be absorbing natural light and compounding the situation. You may find that only one or two rooms need attention, saving you the cost and effort associated with a major home overhaul. • Lighten up window treatments. Heavy drapes or thick blinds can be replaced with translucent alternatives. Translucent shades will allow light into the room without compromising privacy, say the experts at HGTV. • Use mirrors strategically. A mirror placed opposite a window will reflect light all around the room. This can make a small room seem larger and a dark space instantly brighter. • Install new windows and doors. If the budget allows, installing larger windows in a home will allow more natural light in. French doors or sliding doors also may make a home’s interior

more bright. Think about adding windows to a side of the house that has none, or increase the size of the windows on the side of the house that gets the most light. • Maximize sunlight from above. Skylights will bring light into a home as the sun passes overhead. Tubular skylights can bring natural sunlight into spaces where you may not expect skylights to be practical. According to Houzz, a design and architectural resource, tubular daylighting devices, or TDDs, can make a big difference. TDDs are reflective pipes installed between the roof and ceiling, with a clear plastic dome. • Use reflective decor. Reflective surfaces, including glass and metal, can

brighten up a room and diffuse light around a room. Glossy backsplashes, pendant lighting and shiny metal that reflect light can increase the natural light, balancing out dark spaces. • Prune trees regularly. Cut back branches and keep trees tidy to maximize sunlight. Avoid planting tall shrubbery in front of windows. • Routinely clean windows and glass doors. Dirt and other grime can prevent light from getting through. Regularly give windows a thorough washing. Natural light is an important commodity in a home. Sunlight can improve mood and go a long way toward keeping home occupants healthy and happy.

Handling major life changes

In the 1960s, researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe studied the potential link between stressful life events and illness. After examining the medical records of thousands of patients, Holmes and Rahe discovered that there was a strong correlation between the two, ultimately developing the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale. Holmes and Rahe found that the death of a spouse, divorce and imprisonment were among the most stressful life events. But a person need not be widowed, recently divorced or newly imprisoned to be dealing stress sparked by a major life change. In fact, Holmes and Rahe found that marriage and retirement, two things many people would consider positive changes, were among the 10 most stressful life events. Change can be both exciting and frightening. Men and women facing major life changes like moving, switching careers or retiring can take the following tips to heart to make such transitions go as smoothly as possible. • Embrace the positive. Change has its advantages and

disadvantages, but once men and women have decided to make changes, they should shift their focus toward the positive aspects of changing instead of worrying about the potential negatives. For example, if moving, focus on the adventure of living somewhere new and the opportunities to explore new places and make new friends. • Accept your decision. Many people spend ample time mulling the pros and cons of major decisions before ultimately deciding to make major changes. People who decide to change careers may have spent years trying to decide if such a change was the right move. Once they have come to a decision and started the process of changing, whether it’s giving a boss two weeks’ notice or putting a house on the market, men and women should accept their decision and rest easier knowing they exercised their due diligence before making a final decision. • Commit to your decision. Fully committing to change can increase your chances of making a successful transition. If moving to a new place, look for opportunities to connect

with neighbors and other members of your new community. Parents can be active in parent organizations at their children’s schools, while professionals can make a concerted effort to connect with coworkers in an effort to build strong relationships that can help their transition go smoothly. • Maintain existing relationships. Professionals who are moving on to new companies and adults moving to new communities don’t have to give up their relationships with current coworkers, neighbors and friends. Maintain contact with valued friends, neighbors and coworkers through channels such as social media, email or even the telephone. These people have likely been valuable resources and friends for years, and there’s no reason you cannot continue to look to them for support and provide a source of support for them should they make a major change in the years ahead. Change is rarely easy, but men and women can take several steps to make transitions go smoothly.

She found response to online classes better than expected. “We were not able to have as many students on Zoom, as in person, keeping the class sizes lower, but most have, on average, had around ten students, kids and adults,” she said. Classes include drawing, painting, ceramics and needle felting, among others. “The needle felting class coming up, you process wool using a burnt needle, agitating the fibers so they become hard and you can make little animals or other shapes,” said Tidball, who earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The EAC’s first virtual showing, “Metal and Mud: An Exhibition of Jewelry and Ceramic Cups,” is a juried and invitational exhibit celebrating a collection of ceramic drinking vessels and art jewelry. Both artforms were created, and utilized, prior to recorded history. Both define the

individuality of the makers and the owners. More than 40 artists from across the country are featured in their first online exhibition, which runs through Saturday, Sept. 19. Jurors Aimee HowardClinger and Joe Page, metalsmithing and ceramics faculty, respectively, at SIUE, accepted 39 artists to participate in this exhibit and invited five other artists to show their work. Howard-Clinger and Page are well-known artists in their fields. “The result is a superb collection of jewelry and ceramic cups, made by hand, by many talented hard-working artists — some of whom are students and some of whom are working,” Tidball noted. The jewelry in the exhibit is not limited to metal. Patrons will find a ring featuring black walnut bark, by Lisa Hamilton, necklaces made with bioplastic, by Beth Browne, and gutter foam juxtaposed with chalcedony in a wearable neck piece, by Tracy Welling. “Metalsmiths are notoriously scrupulous in their practice, both in technique and thought, and this show does an excellent job of featuring the beauty of metalsmithing in both craft and idea,” Tidball said. Ceramic cups in the show highlight a range of techniques and aesthetics.

And though the Edwardsville Art Fair is canceled, which is facilitated by the Edwardsville Arts Center in partnership with the city of Edwardsville, the EAC’s plan is to include the artists who would have participated in the juried show and fair in the EAC’s annual November Holiday Show. The show will be virtual and the exhibited art will be for sale. The Edwardsville Arts Center also launched a new membership drive, sending out letters this week. But anyone can become a member online at www.edwardsvilleartscenter.com. Membership supports all of EAC’s programs. Pandemic or not, the Edwardsville Arts Center’s mission continues: To inspire the lives of youth and the creative spirit of adults through classes, exhibits and cultural events, especially underscoring the center’s education programs, vast in scope and variety through public art classes. A new program, “Art Out of the Box,” meets all the tenets of the EAC’s mission. “Art Out of the Box kits have step-by-step instructions to complete as complex-as-possible art projects that are engaging and that kids can do without personal instruction,” Tidball explained. “It’s art that is focused on historical and contemporary artists.

Food For Thought… with Vicki Bennington

MANAGE YOUR

Burgers and Fries to Go EDWARDSVILLE — In my opinion, Red Robin in Edwardsville has the most awesome burgers ever. And during these strange times of limited or no indoor service (depending on what month or week it is), you can still — luckily — get them to go. Of course, by the time you are reading this, things may be back to normal since rules change frequently. But as of this writing, curbside was the way to go. Since Red Robin has a fairly extensive menu, you don’t have to get a burger, but I personally, can’t pass one up. “Whiskey River BBQ” gets my vote every time, with BBQ sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, mayo and crispy onion straws. One of the perks at Red Robin is endless steak fries, which you can’t get when you pick up your order, but hey, they include a generous portion of the soft tasty potatoes. And since we took our meal home, I utilized the Red Robin All Natural Signature Blend Seasoning that I purchased on a previous visit to top the fries and even accent my burger. It’s a seasoned salt, with a bit of a bite - maybe from the black pepper and paprika that’s in it - that adds more of the signature “Red Robin” flavor that is hard to duplicate. My husband ordered the “Smoke and Pepper” burger with black-peppered bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, dill pickle planks

and “Smoke & Pepper” ketchup on a toasted brioche bun. He tried the onion rings on the side, and since I snuck one off of his plate, I can verify they are crispy, tasty and were also a good choice. And if neither one of our burger choices tickle your fancy, there are more to choose from: “The Madlove,” with cheddar and Parmesan crisp, provolone, Swiss, jalapeno relish, candied bacon, avocado, citrus-marinated tomatoes, red onions and lettuce on a brioche bun; the “Southern Charm,” with brown sugar glaze; “Black & Bleu,” with portobello mushrooms and Bleu cheese crumbles; the “Master Cheese” and more! Beyond (or before) the burgers, you can choose appetizers like pretzel bites, bold boneless wings, fried pickles, chili cheese fries or creamy artichoke and spinach dip. Or maybe start with a salad. BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado) on a croissant sounds like a great sandwich, as does “Whiskey River BBQ Chicken (gotta love that BBQ sauce), Teriyaki chicken and Tuscan salmon. A chicken platter, shrimp, mac ‘n’ cheese, cod, or combinations are other entrée choices. Fun non-alcoholic beverages like cream sodas, freckled lemonade or poppin’ purple lemonade make the meal feel festive.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT continued from Page 20

Or you can even get alcohol to go, if you are so inclined. Bottles of Kendall-Jackson chardonnay, Ecco Domani pinot grigio, Carnivor cabernet sauvignon or Truly Hard Seltzer in wild berry are a few of the selections to accompany your meal. For dessert, who can resist fudge-filled chocolate chip cookies? You can always try

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge EDWARDSVILLE — Despite the name I gave my file for this review in my computer index, “Quarantine End,” I’m not certain that the end of my cinemahopping quarantine is actually completely at an end. When Gov. J.B. Pritzker closed down the restaurants and bars last week, I felt my insides tighten a little and thought movie theaters wouldn’t be far behind. I’d only managed to make one trip to the cinema since the re-openings to the public Aug. 27, and “The New Mutants” would not be a good taste to leave in my mouth if I have to wait several more weeks — or months — to get back to a theater. I know I better get in to see “Tenet” sooner rather than later. Here are some impressions about both director Josh Boone’s “The New Mutants” and the work that AMC Theatres has done to bring a major cultural element back to our lives. So, what was it like to find myself back in an actual movie house after these five and a half months? The only weird-feeling time was the one-minute walk from the parking lot, while I tried to finagle both my mask and my cell phone’s e-ticket at the same time. Once inside, I found Plexiglass dividers in place at the ticket drop, where an eager-nervous host greeted me and scanned a QR code through a small slot. At the snack counter a relieved

the mountain high “Mudd” pie or chocolate fruffles (chilled, dark-chocolate-dipped fudge brownies with French sea salt, sugar crystals and berry sauce). Now, that sounds irresistible. In case you didn’t know, Red Robin has technically been around since the 1940s! Starting as Sam’s Tavern, the owner was

known for singing “When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin’ Along” with a barbershop quartet, and he ended up changing the name to Sam’s Red Robin. That was in Seattle. Over time, the tavern was purchased, the name shortened to Red Robin, and its offerings evolved into serving gourmet burgers.

It was first franchised in the 1970s. The 1990s saw the addition of bottomless steak fries, still one of its hallmarks. It now has 570 company-owned stores and 90 operated as franchises. The Edwardsville Red Robin is at 6699 Edwardsville Crossing Dr. For more information or a full menu, visit redrobin.com.

Quarantine end? attendant was thrilled to offer me not just a lovely bucket of popcorn through his window, but also all the accoutrements that come along with it, such as plastic cups of buttery topping, salt packets, napkins, a straw and a lid, tucked down into my empty drink cup. Surprisingly, the roller grill was full of hot dogs alongside hermetically sealed nacho chips and cheese. The menu proclaimed I could also order “gluten-free snacks” and a handy laminated card on the counter showed small icons of the candy offerings. Fortunately, since March, I hadn’t forgotten what a Junior Mints box looked like. The bar was open. Directional stickers and hand sanitizer pumps and antibacterial cloth wipes barrels stood sentinel across the lobby’s expanse and down the corridor to the auditorium. Reserved seating precluded anyone from sitting directly on either side of me, but that’s pretty normal, because I like to sit down close to the screen, where no one bothers me. Once the lights went down, and I got comfy, it all came back to me, more easily than riding a bike ever did. Movie going may be changing, but only in ways that merely serve as window dressing. The crowd was light. My late Saturday matinee had a “Wednesday crowd,” if you know what I mean. A lot of that came from uncertainty. Just as much, I hope, can be attributed to poor movie selection. While the rather awful “The New Mutants” was the highest-

“The New Mutants,’” left to right, Charlie Heaton, Anya Taylor-Joy, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga and Maisie Williams, in the superhero horror film release, “The New Mutants,” the first since AMC Theatres reopened to the public Aug. 27. (Courtesy of 20th Century Studios|For The Telegraph) profile title in release at the time, I will capitulate to the point that no one was really clamoring to get in the theater in the first place. There was a reason Fox and, later, Disney had shelved “The New Mutants” for so long. Mirage aka Danielle Moonstar (Blu Hunt) wakes up in a mysterious asylum after fleeing a tornado late one night, with her father (Adam Beach), as the funnel cloud touched down on the reservation where she lived. She had no memory of how she got to the asylum. Time reveals that she’s under the care of Dr. Reyes (Alice Braga) to treat minor wounds and the trauma of the psychological effects, sure to influence Mirage’s

developing mutant powers. Part of the “X-Men” film series, “The New Mutants” is a comingof-age/Gothic horror tale about five sequestered young people, at the hands of unknown forces for unknown reasons. It’s also pretty lame and full of a lot of talking about adolescent shame and other feelings. Mirage is joined by Wolfsbane aka Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams), Magik aka Illyana Rasputin (Anya Taylor-Joy), Cannonball aka Sam Guthrie (Charlie Heaton) and Sunspot aka Roberto da Costa (Henry Zaga). Mirage is the only mutant teen not yet aware of the impact her mutation will have on her life. The other four mutants

posses different capabilities, such as able to blow up things or manipulating matter or animals. Magik converses with a purple dragon hand puppet, which, by the way, is only inanimate to the rest of us. You should stay away from this movie, but do consider finding another reason to don your mask and go to the movies. “The New Mutants” runs 99 minutes and is rated PG-13 for violent content, some disturbing/bloody images, some strong language, thematic elements, and suggestive material. I give this film one-half star out of four.
