Good Weather Gallery One Year Later By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — It’s been quite a year for Good Weather Gallery as it gratefully celebrates its first anniversary with a special exhibition and reception. Join Good Weather Gallery’s curator and owner Brooke Peipert, of Alton, in welcoming textile artist Denise Mandel for a solo exhibit, “A Journey Through Interwoven Threads,” by textile artist Denise Mandel & “One-year Anniversary of Good Weather Gallery,” featuring Mandel’s collection of loom woven work. The exhibit, hung in the gallery at 301 N. Main St., in Edwards-

ville, also will feature live music and for every $365 spent by an individual, they receive a mini bottle of Rondel Gold Brut Cava champagne. “Good Weather Gallery is excited to celebrate its one year anniversary alongside such a talented artist,” Peipert said. “Grab your mask and a friend and celebrate with us.” Mandel’s artist statement is, “Weaving is the core of my existence as an artist. Things just come together when behind my looms. In the process of designing, prepping, execution and giving birth to a creation by cutting the warp threads, the interwoven yarns talk to me. Reflections of past, present, and even future moods and memories, occur. Nature’s seasonal events influence

Be it stars, rainbows, autumn leaves, snowflakes, flowers, etc. Animals frequently appear, too.” Navajo weaving of the Southwest influenced Mandel, of St. Louis, greatly when she started her career as a weaver in New Mexico. “For that, it will remain in my blood forever,” she said. “Compositional weft-face rugs and tapestries are my forte. Simple strategies to meet the neighbors after moving A lot goes into building safe, strong communities. While no single factor can be highlighted as more important than another in regard to building strong communities, a willingness on the part of residents to connect with their neighbors can greatly benefit local neighborhoods and the people who call those communities home. According to Mental Health America®, a community-based nonprofit dedicated to promoting the mental health of all Americans, research has shown that social connections increase happiness and lead to improved overall health and even longer lives. Adults may find that establishing a connection with their communities, and maintaining that connection while juggling the responsibilities of work and a family, is not always so easy. That’s especially so for adults who have recently relocated to new areas. Reaching out to neighbors can be a great way for adults to build new relationships that can benefit them as individuals and strengthen their communities. • Don’t be shy. People often want to know who’s living next door, so adults who have recently moved need not be shy about introducing themselves to their new neighbors. Introduce yourself and share what inspired you to move to your new neighborhood. • Answer and ask questions. Neighbors will no doubt ask questions when you introduce yourself, so be ready to answer these questions. Questions may focus on your

career and where you grew up. If you grew up in the area where you recently moved, some of your neighbors likely did as well. Sharing stories about your school days and/ or local hotspots can be a great way to break the ice. Don’t hesitate to ask some questions of your own as well. Asking questions might reveal some common interests that can serve as strong foundations for budding relationships. • Host a backyard barbecue. Backyard barbecues are laid back affairs, and that pressure-free atmosphere is perfect for meeting new neighbors. Once you have settled in, invite a handful of your neighbors over for the barbecue. If you have children, invite neighbors who also are parents, ideally ones whose children are the same age as your own. Kids have sparked many a conversation, and discussions about local schools, parks and programs for youngsters can be great ice breakers. • Volunteer. Volunteering with community-based organizations is another great way to meet new neighbors. Volunteering with an organization whose mission you identify with may be even better, as you’re likely to find like-minded neighbors who share your passions when working with such groups. Strong communities are built around people. When moving to a new community, adults can overcome the challenges such relocations present by taking various steps to connect with their new neighbors.t

Recreate the county fair feel For years and years, I went to the Jersey County Fair with my mom. Depending on what decade we’re talking about, other people were with us, as well. Maybe it was some of my siblings, maybe my dad went, too. Other years, it was my boyfriend or good friend who went along. Then, later, it was my own children who watched the parade with us, and visited the fairgrounds. One of the first things we would all do upon arrival — no matter who was included with the group — is get a corn dog with mustard and a fresh-squeezed lemonade. In fact, in later years, that’s really all we did. By then, we didn’t spend the day riding rides or taking little children on rides. My mom and at least one of the “kids,”

whether that was me or one of my daughters, would stop by for the treats that only the fair could provide. With this year’s fair cancelled and, as far as I know, nary a county or state fair within driving (or maybe even flying) distance, I thought I would improvise. I made my own corn dogs and lemonade, which might just get us through until we can visit a fair in person next year (Dare we hope that’s true?). The corn dog recipe is very simple. Start with a package of your favorite type of hot dogs and a box of cornbread mix. Prepare the cornbread and pour it into muffin cups (either spray pan with

“Respite” features original works by Eugenia Alexander and Greg Edmondson. Alexander’s artist statement is, “Through my work, I use the rich African tradition of storytelling through fabric work telling stories of connecting the African Diaspora/African American to traditional African heritage specifically through Indigo Dying. As an African American, growing up not knowing my heritage I felt a sense of loss of where exactly my ancestors came from, what their traditions and heritage are. As I learned indigo dying from a master artist I started to feel more of a connection to my heritage and culture as if it was my ancestors passing this tradition down to me through indigo hand dying. I tell these stories of Blackness, Connection, and Search through my work.” Edmondson’s artist statement is, “For the past five years I have been an Artist-in-Residence in mostly isolated, immersive environments. The works presented here illustrate the significant and on-going shift in my practice that this experience has brought about. The generative systems that drove my earlier work have begun to give way to a more intuitive and color driven approach to making imagery. My interest in patterns of organic growth and decay has remained, but the strict set of instructions I had followed has eroded. This new work is still formal and abstract, but based in simple forms and complex color strategies. These new paintings straddle a line between intention and response — constantly being nudged into unfamiliar territory by small discoveries made along the way.” Also, the artwork is available for purchase via www.goodweatherartgallery. com beginning the opening day of solo exhibits. “We have also began e-commerce, so work can either be purchased directly from the gallery or directly from our website,” Peipert said. Freeze frame: You can’t ‘unsee’ these iconic images

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge EDWARDSVILLE — Last time, during my discussion of movie partnerships, I unwittingly gave myself the idea for this week’s column — cinema as storytelling. This artform combines imagery, motion, audio, human performance, and a slew of business and technical wizards to bring a vision to life. One of the most attractive and lasting parts of moviemaking is, at its heart, photography set to motion — 35mm film passing through 24 frames, one at a time per second, creating the effect that we know as “movie magic.” Admittedly the whole exercise is decidedly less romantic when digitized. But my notion this week was to answer the broad question “What is the greatest film image in movie-making history?” This puzzle sprung to me because of a recent reference I made to John Wayne, specifically in the closing frame of 1956’s “The Searchers.” I cherish this movie and the horse it road in on. Its reputation has grown significantly over the past 20 years. Here are a few more extremely subjective nominees for the title of “The Greatest Film Image in Movie-making History.” I pray the time I’ve invested in this exercise helps us all get through this, especially today — Aug. 27, 2020 — tentatively when AMC again prepares to reopen our town’s theater. Without further adieu… (titles mine, quotation marks my editor’s, for the movies’ indelible images) • “Ethan Still Doesn’t Feel He Belongs” — In “The Searchers,” after rescuing Debbie (Natalie Wood) and returning the youngster to a homestead, Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) is the last of the search-party’s members to enter a front door’s frame. He hesitates and turns back to the sandy plain, with Monument Valley in front of him, in the blazing sun as the door closes and the movie credits begin to roll. It’s an impressive and beautiful still, suggesting additional information about the character’s place in time and where he fits into his world at large. Francis Ford Coppola echoed this shot beautifully to wrap up “The Godfather,” years later, in 1972. • “Chance the Gardener Walks on Water” — At the conclusion of 1979’s “Being There,” a magical realism picture, Chance (Peter Sellers) literally steps onto a placid winter pond, as a narrative of concurrent eulogies tells of understanding one’s limitations. Chance clearly doesn’t have a chance, yet his simple nature betrays him. Constantly mistaken for having profundity, Chance makes his way through this dark comedy. He dips his umbrella illustrating depth and we realize our mistake. He’s much more than our smirking-audience face allowed him. I’ve been to the location where “Being There” was filmed, the Biltmore, in Asheville, North Carolina. I’m sorry to say, I got lost there, on its 8,000 acres, looking for that pond. • “Tatooine’s Two Suns” — Movie-going changed after the 1977 release of “Star Wars.” Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) gazing at the twin setting suns, in his first scene, sets the stage for a billion dollar saga that transformed science fiction filmmaking for all time. Drama is most known for producing memorable and stirring images, but animation also has its place. Profound sin-

gular images include “Fantasia’s” Sorcerer Mickey leading musical brooms and “The Lion King’s” Rafiki introducing baby Simba. But,imagine “Schindler’s List” without the Girl in the Red Coat or “Gladiator” without a mocking Russell Crowe standing front-and-center in the Colosseum. A kiss is just a kiss, except when it involves Spider-Man’s upside-down kiss scene or “From Here to Eternity’s” Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster on a beach. Maybe a picture does tell a story and is worth a thousand words in late directors John Hughes’ “The Breakfast Club” with Bender’s fist pump or Tony Scott’s “Top Gun” Maverick’s thumbs-up.

Some of my favorite movie images are so great they wound up on a poster, including “The Burning of Atlanta,” the historic film still from “Gone With the Wind,” the “Death of Sgt. Elias (Willem Dafoe)” in “Platoon” and creepy Malcolm McDowell in “A Clockwork Orange.” What I’ve found in researching this topic, is that there are thousands of worthy candidates for consideration of “The Greatest Film Image in Movie-making History” and there are equally as many websites dedicated to the topic. This gives credence to the debate that film remains one of the most enduring artforms of professional criticism. I thrive on it and, I hope, you do, too.
