REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT Over the past year I have had the honor of representing the Prairieland United Way as Board President. During the 2019 Campaign, we were able to raise over $470k that goes to support agencies in Morgan, Scott, Cass, and Northern Greene counties. Many of these agencies can use this funding to apply for federal and state grants, which in some cases has the potential of doubling or even tripling their funding. Achieving our campaign goal would not have been possible without the support of the community. Our partnerships with businesses in and around Jacksonville is critical to the success of our campaign and the success of our agencies. . I would like to recognize our campaign chairs, David and Nicole Meyer. David and Nicole attended nearly every workplace campaign presentation this year and served as a voice for JOE DARNELL PLUW. Their creative nature launched PLUW into a new fundraising event sponsored by President Reynolds Consumer Products, “The Price is United”. This event was a spinoff of the popular Prairieland United Way television game show, “The Price is Right”. David and Nicole spent many late nights and Board of Directors weekends building games and props that would be used for the show. If you were unable to 2019-20 attend this year, I’d encourage you to buy a ticket next year. As we wrapped up our campaign and began preparations for allocation panels our world was turned upside down by COVID-19. Many of our agencies had to find new ways of working that would allow them to provide the same level of services to those in need. As a board, we had to find ways in which we could provide additional support to these agencies. PLUW received additional funding through the CARES Act which we were able to distribute to agencies and programs that went through the application process. Some of these agencies did not have a relationship with PLUW, but that did not exclude them from the process. With the CARES Act funding and a generous donation from a local donor, we were able to provide an additional $35k to our four-county area. This funding came at a time when many of these agencies needed it most. As I look back on this year, I am grateful to have served with a board and director that is invested in this community. Each member is not only giving financially, but they are also volunteering their time. To Karen Walker, thank you for continuing to move PLUW forward and for making PLUW a place that people can turn to in time of need. To the board, thank you for your support and dedication to PLUW over the last year. To PLUW’s agencies, thank you serving on the frontlines and providing those critical services to our area’s most vulnerable. Our agencies are the reason we GIVE, ADVOCATE, and VOLUNTEER. As the baton is passed to Barb Davenport and two new campaign chairs are nominated, I look forward to seeing the great work that will be accomplished in the coming year. Sincerely, Joe Darnell, 2019-20 Prairieland United Way Board President

In 2019, we held our first ever LIVE UNITED WEEK, a weeklong event to kickoff the 2019 ANNUAL CAMPAIGN. The week included raising awareness, supporting United Way through promotions, an amazing public event featuring our campaign chairs and our agency partners, and wrapping up with a community blood drive.

We did it! By “we”, we of course mean everyone in our Prairieland United Way Community, because raising over $470,000 takes many people that believe in what United Way does and the agencies that it serves. It has been a few months now that we have wrapped up our 2019 campaign and as we reflect on the campaign, we cannot express how much we are thankful for the community that we live in. We live in a community that is generous with their time and their money. Through those offerings, the agencies will be able to continue to serve those in need, especially during this crazy time. With being campaign chairs, we had opportunity to learn more about the partnerships United Way has with several businesses in our community. And if you ever followed Nicole or PLUW’s Facebook page you probably saw some of the businesses we attended to advocate for UW during company campaigns, helping promote fundraisers a company puts on, or even the new partnerships made with Small Businesses United. So many companies and people came together to make this campaign successful. In addition, in the midst of these business partnerships, there are those loyal individual donors that step up each year that we cannot thank enough. We ran into several folks in the community, saying “Oh, I just sent in my donation” which just put an immediate smile our face. In general, when we were asked to be campaign chairs, we were, one, shocked and humbled to be asked, but two, we asked ourselves can we really do it? Now, with the campaign completed, we can say yes, but it takes a great Execute Director (Karen), an amazing board that supports our crazy ideas and helps make them happen, and a whole community. For that, we are thankful. Thank you for helping us grow united. David and Nicole Meyer The 2019 Campaign was amazing and we feel very successful in raising over $471,000 from a community that continues to face challenging economic times. The Campaign kicked off with a lively afterhours event at the Morgan County Fairgrounds, sponsored by Nestle, Diversified Crop Insurance Services and Passavant Area Hospital. The focus of the Kickoff was “GROWING UNITED”. We were excited to partner with the Jacksonville Area Chamber of Commerce to increase awareness of United Way through their membership. We continued joint efforts with area businesses like Hampton Inn and our Drive Thru Breakfast, and adding Take Over evening at Buffalo Wild Wings, a United Way Day with Papa Murphy’s, Small Businesses United with the Sewing Center and Home Girls, and the biggest highlight of the campagn year, the first ever The Price is United event, sponsored by Reynolds Consumer Products. Some businesses held reoccurring Jeans Days throughout the year, and others offered lunches and chamber checks as incentives to reach higher participation among their staffs. All in all, more than 2,000 donations totaling over $471,000 were received to mark the end of the 2019 fundraising campaign. We held our 3rd annual Colors United 5k Run/Walk, sponsored by Jacksonville Lawn Care, and a Trivia Night with all proceeds going to this year’s campaign. Most importantly, the year was spent growing awareness and compassion of and for our many agencies throughout our community to provide services to those in need. A hidden benefit of United Way funds is the way they are leveraged to bring additional dollars into our community. Many agencies depend on their United Way grant to secure additional funding from the state and federal governments and foundations. Several United Way funded agencies will receive an additional $1,127,000 by leveraging their United Way grants. That means for every United Way dollar awarded, another $3.10 is received from outside funds.

In 2019, we worked with the United Way of Illinois State Association for a study of poverty and low income families and individuals, called ALICE, which stands for Assett Limited, INcome Constrained, Employed. These are families and individuals who are working, yet not making enough to make ends meet. They often have to make difficult decisions about how best to care for their families with the money they have. The study is statewide and broken down by county. You can
