Edwardsville Arts Center’s ‘Patron of the Arts’ awarded to Edwardsville artist

The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — This year recognition goes to a supporter of the arts who is an advocate for creativity. Edwardsville Arts Center recipient Steve Hartman, of its Patron of the Arts Award is creative director at Werremeyer Creative, in St. Louis, as well as an Edwardsville artist. Hartman works in multiple mediums to include photography, watercolor, oils and ceramics. His oil creations have shifted from still life to Edwardsville scenes and back again, whereas his watercolors are abstract. His photography is usually black and white and his experiments with ceramics are pit-fired raku. Hartman, who graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1988, uses his art to keep his creative mind stretching and active. Hartman’s passion for

art was stoked by Dennis DeToye, a well known and beloved art instructor at EHS. After graduating from Eastern Illinois University in 1992, he taught design and visual communications at Washington University in St. Louis, Maryville University, Webster University and University of Missouri - St. Louis. During his career as a graphic designer, Hartman worked at Falk Harrison, VSA Partners and ran his own studio, Creativille, in Edwardsville, where he lives with his wife, Shawna, and their three sons. Hartman has also served on various boards, including AIGA, the Professional Association for Design and as an Edwardsville Arts Center board member. Currently, he is one of four operators of The Gogh-Getters, the world’s only micro-gallery located at Sacred Grounds Café in Edwardsville.

Each year, the Patron of the Arts Award goes to a community member who has shown outstanding dedication and contributed greatly to the arts in the region. Nominees over the course of the year should demonstrate a sustained and positive impact on the arts community in the Metro East. Positive impacts can be made in a myriad of ways, from educators to practitioners to patrons to leaders in organizations that champion the arts. This year’s Patron of the Arts achievement will be celebrated virtually, showcasing posts and videos each day this week at the Edwardsville Arts Center’s new website, www.edwardsvilleartscenter.com, and its Facebook page. The collected videos are from community members who have worked with Hartman on various creative projects, including a video of his son and friends who have created a clothing tag called Mikro.

Other videos share commendations from local artists and designers about his devotion to the arts throughout the region. The Edwardsville Arts Center is a community visual arts center located in Edwardsville, featuring local, regional and national artists. To comply with state regulations due to COVID-19, artwork and education has transitioned to an online format. Donations are currently being accepted and are used to fund the many programs and educational opportunities at the arts center. The arts center is dedicated to the community, offering classes to enrich the area’s cultural experiences with affordable education and providing opportunities to artists to share their talents and merchandise. To learn more, call the Edwardsville Arts Center at 618-655-0337 or visit www.edwardsvilleartscenter.com.

Purchasing a home is one of the largest investments you will ever make Special to Home & Lifestyles If you are making one of the largest purchases in your life, there are many decisions throughout the buying process that require guidance. You have begun with choosing your real estate agent and all that entails. You found a home you can imagine yourself in… What is next? Because Trident Inspections LLC goes by the motto “We believe you deserve to be safe at home” After signing your contract for your potential forever home, the next step is to get the home inspected for possible underlying issues which may affect your choice of investment! A home inspection is an objective visual examination of the physical structure and systems of a house, from the roof to the foundation. The standard home inspector’s report will cover the condition of the

home’s heating system; central air conditioning system (temperature permitting); interior plumbing system; electrical system; the roof, attic and visible insulation; walls, ceilings, floors, windows and doors; and the foundation, basement and structural components. It is so important to get a home inspection, prior to closing, because the inspector can help discover, and document, defects that may or may not be obvious to you as a prospective buyer. Such defects can range from simple replacements or repairs, to severe damage or safety and health concerns. Also, some lenders and mortgage programs may require a home inspection on a property before approving a home loan. According to Marc Ressler of Trident Inspections LLC, a home inspection company located in Madison County, home buyers often have many questions.

“One question I often get from clients is “Did the home pass?”. Home inspection is not a pass or fail type of inspection. We inspect for safety, defects, and regular maintenance items. We compile the information about the home and present the data to the client in the form of a report. In the case of a buyer’s inspection, the buyer can then request repairs or compensation for the defects that I find. In this way, the buyer can protect themselves from hazardous conditions and unexpected cost. For a seller that has requested an inspection, often called a pre-listing inspection, they can use the information to consider making repairs or updates to attract potential buyers. Being aware of defects before entering into a contract can save the seller money and stress, by allowing them time to get multiple bids and having repairs done without an impending deadline.”

Getting a home inspection not only can help prevent costly expenses, but also ensures your loved ones are safe in the home. Is the image I sent over yesterday, of the inspector on the roof, good to use for the cover? Inspector for Trident Inspections (For Home & Lifestyles)

A lesson in building a backyard retaining wall Flat, even landscapes are often coveted in backyards. However, flat backyards are not always so easy to find. Fortunately, varied terrain does not mean that certain landscaping plans are entirely off limits, especially for homeowners willing to build retaining walls. Retaining walls help turn steep slopes in a yard into terraced focal points. They also can reduce soil erosion in hilly areas and can be used for aesthetic purposes, like raised planters, or to create more usable space within the yard. When an inground pool or pond is cut into a backyard hill, a retaining wall helps keep the remaining portion of that hill from collapsing into the cut-away area. When contemplating retaining wall projects, a lesson in physics and engineering may be needed. A sturdy and long-lasting retaining wall needs to be built in a way that will take into consideration the force of the soil and the point at which the soil will begin to slide away, advises the experts at The Family Handyman. If these calculations seem beyond the scope of your ability, installation of a retaining wall is a job best left to a professional. If you are ready to forge ahead, these tips can get you started. However, it’s important to note the potential benefits of working with others who have already built a retaining wall. • Safety first: Call to have underground

utilities plotted and marked before beginning any excavation. • Map out your trench and begin to dig. The trench should have a level, compacted base as it will be the foundation for which the retaining wall materials, be they blocks, bricks or wood, sit in. A crushed stone base will help anchor the courses and serve to promote drainage. The Family Handyman says to bury the first course of the retaining wall one-tenth the height of the wall to prevent soil behind it from pushing the bottom out. • Check for level. When placing blocks or timbers, make sure they are even with the first and periodically check for level as you go, advises the home improvement retailer Lowes®. • Stagger and set back. The next row of blocks or material should be positioned so that the joints are staggered for blocks, bricks or wood. A masonry blade will be needed to cut the harder materials; a circular saw will cut timber. Also, work against gravity by setting the second course slightly back from the first to help push back against the soil that is trying so hard to push forward. Repeat the process as each level is placed. Many retaining wall products are made with a lip to create this set back. • Go with the grade. For especially steep

slopes, a gradual step-up design may be more secure and more appealing than a very tall retaining wall. Each level of a stepped design should be done like the first. • Backfill with stone for drainage. Using a layer of stone behind the retaining wall can help successfully direct water away so it will

not increase the weight of the soil behind the wall and push against the retaining wall, advises The Home Depot. Retaining walls serve different purposes in a yard. Building such a wall requires planning and careful execution to ensure the job is done correctly.

Home buying during the COVID-19 outbreak

Homeowners know that the process of buying a home can be both exciting and nervewracking. The anxiety associated with buying a home has hit new heights during the outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19. Historically low interest rates and limited inventory has made 2020 an especially unique time to buy a home. It’s also a competitive and potentially expensive time to buy a home. While the economic consequences of COVID19 have been severe, the Federal National Mortgage Association, also known as Fannie Mae, forecasted a significant increase in median home prices in March 2020. City dwellers have scrambled to buy homes outside of cities, where social distancing is more difficult and the risk of getting COVID-19 appears greater than it is in suburban or rural settings. That’s led to a lot of competition among prospective buyers. Prospective home buyers willing to enter the hectic fray and shop for a home during the COVID-19 outbreak may benefit from knowing what to expect as they search for their next home. • Get ready for virtual tours. Buyers might once have scoffed at the notion of buying a home they’d only seen in videos, but virtual tours have become the new normal in the

wake of the pandemic. An April survey from the National Association of Realtors® found that home tours had declined sharply. While 98 percent of realtors reported taking clients on home tours as recently as February, that number had declined to 63 percent by April. As many regions pause their reopening plans, prospective home buyers should ready themselves for virtual tours as opposed to in-person home tours. • Expect limited inventory. While home prices are up, many people are holding onto their homes. The NAR reports that total housing inventory at the end of May 2020 was down nearly 19 percent from the end of May 2019. Buyers will have less inventory to choose from, so those intent on buying may need to prioritize what they need in a home and focus on finding properties that can fulfill those needs. • Expect to move quickly. Realtors have seen homes sell within days of being listed, and that has put pressure on buyers to move quickly. It also highlights the importance of finding a home inspector before your search begins as well as a lender who can handle quick closings. Ask around for recommendations, but make sure you have these two important professionals lined up before beginning your search. Doing

Keep kids safe when mowing the lawn

Warm weather beckons many people outdoors. Perhaps no group of people like being out in the warm sun more than children. Children should be encouraged to spend time outdoors when the weather allows, as physical activity is one of the hallmarks of a healthy lifestyle. But parents must exercise caution when kids are playing in the yard, especially when the grass is being mowed. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than 9,000 children in the United States go to the emergency room for lawn mower-related injuries every year. Of the 800 children who are run over by mowers each year, 600 ultimately require amputations. Many mower-related injuries occur when children who are too young and/or too weak to operate a mower are asked to do so. The AAP recommends that only children age 12 and older operate push mowers, while riding mowers should only be used by kids 16 and older. No child should use a mower without first being taught how to operate it, and kids should always wear eye protection and close-toed shoes when mowing. In addition, parents should never allow children to ride as passengers while mowing the

lawn. Mower-related injuries are preventable if parents emphasize safety. The following are some tips, courtesy of the AAP, that parents can follow to ensure their kids do not become one of the thousands of children who suffer mowerrelated injuries in a given year. • Only use a mower with a control that stops the mower blade from moving if the handle is let go. • Keep children out of the yard while mowing. Mower blades can shoot rocks, sticks or other common yard debris out in all directions, and these trajectories put kids at risk of injuries to their eyes and other parts of their bodies. • Scour the yard for toys before mowing. Toys left in the yard can become trajectories if not removed prior to mowing, and chipped toys with sharp edges can pose a threat to kids even after the grass has been cut. • Exercise caution if going in reverse. The AAP advises against pulling a mower backward or shifting into reverse unless absolutely necessary. If you must do so, look behind you to make sure no kids are trailing you or are nearby.

• Only mow when there is adequate daylight. • Periodically inspect your mower. Periodic inspections of your mower can help you make sure guards, shields, switches, and other safety

devices are in proper working order. When mowing their lawns, parents must make safety their utmost priority to ensure kids do not suffer mower-related injuries.

Roofing materials transform the look and functionality of a home

When renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well. Roofing materials have evolved over the years, but the most common type of roofing material is the asphalt shingle. These shingles are a relatively modern invention, with the first “asphalt prepared roofing” serving as a forerunner to asphalt shingles, appearing in the late 1800s. Roofing materials will need to meet a particular area’s fire codes and must be able to withstand any extreme weather conditions common to the geographic region where the home is located. Certain roofing materials may be heavier than others and may require special framing. Work with an experienced roofing contractor to learn more about your available options and to shed light on any special installation or maintenance issues to consider before construction begins. The following are just some of the roofing materials homeowners may want to consider. • Asphalt shingles: The most popular roofing material, asphalt shingles are guaranteed for 20 to 30 years, which helps solidify this choice as a smartvalue product. For some homeowners, a downside to

shingles is that, because they are so popular, they’re seen everywhere. So those homeowners looking to make a unique statement with their roofing materials may want to choose a different option. • Wood shingles and shakes: A wood roof is another possibility, but some homeowners find wood roofs require more money to install and more effort to maintain than roofs made with other materials. Wood shingles are sawn from logs and are thin, while shakes are thick, rough and formed by being split from logs. • Clay or concrete tiles: These tiles add texture and elegance to a roof, says HGTV. Clay or concrete tiles are very durable and quite heavy, so they must be installed by a professional. These tiles can make Mediterranean-, Spanish- or mission-style houses stand out even more. Their long-lasting nature can help offset the price tag. • Metal: Metal roofs are usually made from fully recyclable steel, aluminum or alloy, making them an eco-friendly choice. Metal roofs also reflect the sun’s rays and can be an energy-efficient option in hot climates. • Slate: One of the longest-lasting materials available in roofing products, slate is fireproof and comes in various natural colors and shapes. Once installed, slate requires very little maintenance. However, slate can be cost-prohibitive because its delicacy and weight requires extra roofing support and professional installation. Changing a roof means years of improved performance and an instant uplift to the look of a home.

Pineapple fried rice and pot stickers. (Vicki Bennington|For The Edge)

EDWARDSVILLE — So … for right now, in Illinois, you can go out to lunch again … at least at the time of this writing. With COVID-19 still around, you never know how things can change from one day to the next, but some of my close family members decided to take the opportunity to social distance at Wang Gang Asian Eats in Edwardsville. It was a Sunday afternoon, and Wang Gang serves up a special lunch combo for $8.99, which includes a choice of two items and a soft drink (or one cold beer).

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, August 13, 2020 • 19 The entire group of three ordered the same thing — pineapple fried rice with chicken, pot stickers and a soft drink. Other fried rice choices sounded good, too, traditional, Thai-basil, drunken and pork, but something about the pineapple’s added sweetness was appealing — and delicious. The gang’s second food choice was potstickers, made with succulent pork, seared hibachi style. Or … Vicki you could choose crab ranBennington goon, Vietnamese spring roll, traditional rangoon, boneless wings in a variety of flavors or a side salad. If you are especially hungry, you can

always go for an order of spring rolls on the side. They are a mix of shrimp, rice noodles, mint, Thai basil, cilantro and lettuce, all wrapped up in rice paper and served with a Vietnamese dipping sauce — in other words, wonderful. The signature crab rangoon is handrolled in-house, with real lump crab meat, bell peppers, scallions and ginger, served with a house-made soy mustard sauce. The restaurant itself is quite large, and unless you’ve been there before, you might be surprised just how big it is. Of course, right now, everyone is seated a safe distance apart, and Wang Gang has the space to easily accomplish that. There’s even a small area outside with tables where patrons can sit. “Upscale” Asian fusion means the

restaurant has a combination of Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine. If you want something other than the special or appetizers, start with some greens, like, the salmon salad — four ounces of salmon, with lettuce, cilantro, carrots, bell peppers, red onions and sesame seeds — dressed with honey oil sesame vinaigrette, or the Sriracha shrimp salad. There are noodle dishes, like, lo mein, bestselling drunken noodles and pad Thai, and stir fries: sweet and sour, Mongolian beef, asparagus, Kung Pao, moo goo gai pan (I’ve always loved to say that name), sesame and Wang Gang curry. Burger choices includes salmon, Burmese or Korean chicken (this sounds different).

Thai tacos, poke bowls, egg foo young, sirloin steaks and crab-topped salmon are offered, as well. The restaurant is also serving “On the Rocks” ready-to-roll cocktails, available for carry out or delivery. You can choose from a wide variety, like, margarita in different flavors, Mai Tai, old-fashioned or cosmopolitan. Seltzers, which include White Claw, becoming more and more popular, and a selection of beers are also on the temporary “COVID” bar menu. Wang Gang is located at University Pointe II, 1041 Century Drive, in Edwardsville. For more information, visit www.wanggangasian.com.

The always intimate Theatre for One goes online By MARK KENNEDY AP Entertainment Writer NEW YORK (AP) — The coronavirus hasn’t stopped the world’s smallest theater. “Theatre for One,” where one audience member sees one short play performed by a single actor in a portable theater, has now gone online. “The experience is unique to Theatre for One. And in that sense, I think it’s still a venue and a space. It’s a space designed specifically for this interaction, now designed online,” said two-time Tony-winning scenic designer Christine Jones, who conceived and leads the project. In response to both the COVID-19 crisis and the Black Lives Matter movement, the company will feature microplays all written and directed by Black, indigenous and women of color. A selection of the tiny plays will be performed each night for a six-week run starting later this month, with each actor delivering up to 15 performances for a single audience member in the 90 minute window. It will be free to the public. The company has embraced a custom online virtual platform designed by cutting-edge OpenEndedGroup and says it retains the one-on-one intimacy that made the physical shows so powerful. Audience members and actors will even be able to look into the other’s eyes at the same time, something impossible for platforms like Zoom. “It feels really unique in how every element of it is distilled and concentrated and thought through in how to heighten this experience with audience and performer,” said co-Artistic Director Jenny Koons. The custom designed digital platform will allow audience members and actors to interact more closely than on traditional online platforms. There will even be a virtual lobby where audience members can gather

and chat before and after performances. Until now, Theatre for One has always been resistant to suggestions to transform into an online experience. “The sense of presence between the two people and the liveness of the moment, and that one-to-one contact, is so critical and essential a part of that experience that we just didn’t see that it could translate,” Jones said. That thinking altered during the pandemic. Jones and Koons began discussing options for the company and how the notion of time was being altered and the concept of live was undergoing change. They came up with “Theatre for One: Here We Are.” “We just started talking and we realized, ‘If we could bring the things about Theatre for One with us — that the intimacy, the surprise, the specificity and curation of the venue and the experience — then maybe it’s something we would want to investigate.” Performances will begin on Aug. 20 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. ET and will be held each subsequent Thursday through Sept. 24. Registration is free and open to the public starting Aug. 17. The eight writers contributing new works — no more than 10 minutes each — are Jaclyn Backhaus, Lydia R. Diamond, Lynn Nottage, Stacey Rose, Nikkole Salter, DeLanna Studi, Regina Taylor and Carmelita Tropicana. The directors include Tiffany Nichole Greene, Candis C. Jones, Rebecca Martinez, Taylor Reynolds and Tamilla Woodard. Mara Isaacs is the producer and the company is helped by Arts Brookfield with additional support from Thomas M. Neff. It’s just one way the theater community is trying to acknowledge the power of Black Lives Matter in theater, including the Black Theatre Coalition,While We Breathe, and Black Theater United. It’s also another example of theater companies trying out new ways to present works during a pandemic. Jones has been working on the project for years,

ever since a magician left her spellbound at a wedding reception by pulling a card she’d selected out of his mouth. The physical booth is not being scrapped entirely — Theatre for One plans to park in Ireland this fall. Post-pandemic the company intends to explore both in-person and virtual experiences. ___ M a r k K e n n e d y i s a t h t t p : / / t w i t t e r. c o m / KennedyTwits

“When things changed to make everyone safer, I worried that the bright spots would go away. I shouldn’t have! Cedarhurst knows how to adjust activities and kept my favorite – visits from local musicians. It’s really beautiful. The music hasn’t stopped. Instead, indoor concerts are now courtyard serenades. I go to my window for them and it makes me feel like a queen.” — Lydia At Cedarhurst Senior Living, caring protection and joyful moments live in harmony. Just like Bogie and Bacall, the greats collaborated

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — The death commemorated and long life of the distinguished Olivia de Havilland was celebrated around our dinner table one night last week when she passed away at the age of 104 in Paris. We covered her role as Melanie in “Gone with the Wind” (ironically she was the last surviving principal actor from the movie despite being one of the only central characters to die on-screen, nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, but lost to co-star Hattie McDaniel, the first black actress to be nominated and win), her groundbreaking work in securing arbitration for actors in unfavorable contracts (the “De Havilland Law”). Also discussed was her life-long feud with her sister, the actress Joan Fontaine. But it was my dad, predictably, that noted her long association with actor Errol Flynn, with whom she’d collaborated on eight movies during their time together as studio players for Warner Bros., starting in the mid-1930s. “That’s almost as many as Tracy and Hepburn,” Dad said over salads.

It was right then, with a bite of forked cucumber halfway to my mouth, that I knew what I’d be writing about this week. Art, like my family dinner conversation, is a collaborative affair. Many of the greats wouldn’t attain the heights they have without their peers alongside. Here are a few fun facts to hold you over until we get through this cursed time. Editor Michael Kahn has worked with director Steven Spielberg for more than 40 years, eventually to eschew use of the Moviola editing machine in favor of computer-aided technology with 2012’s “Lincoln.” Editor Thelma Schoonmaker has worked with Martin Scorsese for more than 50 years and edited every picture Scorsese’s made since “Raging Bull.” Marty’s career is full of these connections. He constantly casts Robert De Niro (10 times) and Leonardo DiCaprio (six) on the front-facing side of the camera. There aren’t a lot of filmmakers anymore who employ a repertory of technical associates. The Coen Brothers still have it in spades and Christopher Nolan commands the right as a leading auteur. It’s more common though for producer partnerships, like, Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Ron Howard or the collab Jerry Bruckheimer had with Don Simp-

son. Some people have a problem with cherrypicking. I was even once accused of “feathering my nest” with high-level talent and I was never professionally prouder. Why would anyone ever settle for second best? Here are a couple of the more significant collaborations the movies have given us over the years: • Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn — Spence and Kate co-starred in nine movies over the span of 25 years. Their widely-known love affair lasted 26. “Adam’s Rib,” in 1949, when they play married, opposing lawyers in a big case and 1967’s racially-charged “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” are classic highlights. • Akira Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune — in the 16 films they made together, the actor almost always played an uncouth, ill-tempered sort. To say that 1950’s “Rashomon” is the best of the lot is as subjective as the clever film’s premise about four alternate viewpoints of a samurai’s murder. Get over yourself and embrace subtitles. • John Ford and John Wayne — more than

14 movies together, the great director proved he could build an image of Wayne that would irrevocably establish the “cowboy” for generations of Americans. Look no further than the framing of the Ringo Kid in his first scene of “Stagecoach” or Ethan Edwards final, throughthe-doorway scene in “The Searchers.” You’ll see what I mean. • Ingmar Bergman and his repertory — Bergman used frequent collaborators so much that it would be impossible to see one of his films that didn’t star at least one of those people. Max von Sydow, Liv Ullmann, Bibi Andersson and cinematographer Sven Nykvist each worked with Sweden’s greatest film figure on more than 10 projects. • Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn — the lady made eight movies with the swashbuckling hero. She was, after all, Marian when he played Robin Hood in 1938. He peaked with this one, released a year before she hit her own mega-stardom. That classic Golden Age of Hollywood has now passed, along with its final star. God bless.

Indiana U’s Eskenazi Museum of Art to reopen Aug. 27 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana University’s Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art will reopen Aug. 27 after a five-month closure. After being closed for three years for a $30 million renovation, the museum reopened in late 2019 but closed again in March amid the COVID19 outbreak. Starting Aug. 27, galleries will be open with revised hours: noon-5 p.m. Thursday and Friday; noon-7 p.m. Saturday; and noon-5 p.m. Sunday, The Herald Times reported. All visitors will be required to wear a face covering and agree to abide by designated safety measures, including social distancing. When the museum closed in March, staff already had been working to enhance its online collections to make it more accessible and in line with its goals as a teaching museum. The online collection allows faculty at IU and other higher education institutions, as well as K-12 teachers, to use visual art in their lesson plans.
