A Look Back at Popular Halloween Costumes (And Ideas For This Year, Too)
Lavish costumes are one of the hallmarks of Halloween. Some people plan their costumes months in advance, and each year inspiration comes from some of the popular memes, movies and conversations that have helped shape people’s lives.
New research from the National Retail Federation says social media has been the biggest influence on costume lists in recent years. Halloween purchases are increasingly inspired by celebrities, friends and neighbors and what these people are doing
online. NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said in 2019 that 35 percent of consumers surveyed indicated they turned to the internet for Halloween inspiration. Those considering Halloween costumes for 2020 can take a look
back at some of the popular costumes of the last few years, based on Google Trends search data.
2016 The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles experienced a resurgence of popularity in recent
years, and numerous people were searching up turtle-powered costumes in 2016.
2017 Popular television shows “Game of Thrones” and “Justice League” inspired many costumes in 2017. However, basic animal costumes like mice, horses, bears, deer, and dinosaurs also were in demand.
2018 Disney released the live-action film version of “Beauty and the Beast” in 2017, but it took another year for the movie to inspire Halloween costumes. Many Belles and Beasts were seen in neighborhoods across the country.

Home Tour and Tea
In consideration for the safety of our homeowners and ticket buyers, we have decided to cancel our Pilot Home Tour. We look forward to an even bigger and better Home Tour for 2021
Comic book characters reigned supreme in 2019. The popular “Avengers” comic book and movie franchise pushed superheroes to the forefront of costume wish-lists. Spider-Man, Thor, Loki, Captain America, and more were quite popular this year for kids and adults.
2020 It’s no understatement that 2020 has been an unusual year. Chances are that many pop culture moments will pave the way for Halloween costumes. COVID19-themed costumes are likely to be seen, including costumes that pay homage to prominent immunologist Dr. Anthony Fauci and other first-line medical heroes. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is another face people have seen a lot of in 2020, increasing the chances that he will make for a popular costume this year. Thanks to the smallscreen release of “Hamilton” on Disney Plus in the summer, Alexander Hamilton could be inspiration for theater and history lovers. Kids and adults may also gear Halloween costumes around characters from a galaxy far away thanks to “The Mandalorian.” Baby Yoda anyone? Halloween costume inspiration comes from all sources, and many can’t wait to don their costumes this October.

Halloween is a unique day each year when people gather together for parties, parades and of course, trick-ortreating. October 31 is a day that most children eagerly await each year because it means an opportunity to don a costume and come home with bags full of sweet treats. This year Halloween figures to look different than it has in years past. Homes may have carved pumpkins on the doorstep and paper ghosts blowing on tree branches. And horror movies will no doubt dominate streaming service top 10 lists. But thanks to the COVID-19 virus, certain Halloween traditions may not be possible. Depending on regulations in your city or town, parties, trickor-treating and school functions (if school is in session) may be canceled or significantly modified. Since COVID-19 is so easily spread, health officials have long touted the need for social distancing. And while masks in public have long since become the norm, Halloween masks may not be

sufficient. The coronavirus already has scared off some Halloween attractions. Universal Orlando, Disney World and Disneyland have canceled mainstream Halloween events for this year. Plus, a recent Harris poll on Halloween found that, of the 1,970 adults polled, nearly three out of four people have no plans to take their children trick-or-treating. So what is the public to do in the wake of the risks of going out for Halloween? · Maintain social distancing if trick-ortreating is allowed. This could mean staggering times to go on the search for candy and avoiding homes where trick-or-treaters have already lined up. · Consider small gatherings that enable youngsters to exchange candy with a limited group of friends or neighbors. · Head to the mall or nearby stores in costume and get candy from retailers where it may be easier to maintain distance. · Wear your mask or special face coverings when trick-or-treating. Consider building a
costume around the masks so it fits with the Halloween theme. · Wash hands frequently or use hand sanitizer when water and soap is unavailable. Limit the number of houses
you visit to reduce your risk of infection. · Ask family or friends to send digital treats, such as gift cards or certificates. Many restaurants may offer voucher programs for

coupons for free ice creams at their locations, and while these may not be traditional Halloween goodies, ice cream is still sure to please youngsters. · Consider car parades
instead of traditional trick-or-treating. Despite the COVID-19 virus, Halloween enthusiasts can find ways to be safe and have fun this year.

1. Turkey tag Transform clothespins into turkeys using feathers, googly eyes and other craft supplies, then clip them on to the back of each player’s shirt. When the game begins, try to unpin other players’ turkeys without losing your own. The last person with a pin on their back wins.
3. Thanksgiving charades On individual pieces of paper, write down holiday-themed phrases such as marching in a parade, carving the turkey, setting the table, baking pumpkin pie and playing football. Take turns picking a phrase and silently acting it out while other players try to guess.
2. Sweet potato race 4. Gratitude pick-up The first person to roll a sticks sweet potato across the floor and over the finish line wins. The catch is you

Use a multi-color set or make your own by painting wooden skewers.
Assign a category (person, place, food, thing) to each color. When a player picks up that color stick, they have to say something they’re thankful for in that category.
5. Turkey waddle This is a great game to play outdoors. Each player holds a balloon between their legs, and the first person to waddle across the finish line with their balloon still in place wins. For larger groups, create teams and make it a relay race. Additionally, you can search online for Thanksgiving trivia, riddles and jokes to liven up your dinner table discussions.

How To Support Small Businesses This Holiday Season The holiday season is an important one for small businesses every year, and it figures to take on heightened importance in 2020. The outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 in late 2019 and early 2020 hit small businesses especially hard, with many being forced to close their facilities to customers in an effort to prevent the virus from spreading. Estimates regarding the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak on small businesses varied, but many small business owners were forced to let go employees as they confronted steep declines in revenue. A ZenBusiness survey of more than 1,000 small business founders, senior managers and decision makers found that 37 percent of small businesses that employ between 11 and 25 people were considering laying off more than one-fifth of their workforce. As small businesses face difficult challenges, it’s no surprise that many consumers want to support locally
owned small businesses this holiday season. Such support not only can help small businesses, but also can help to revitalize local communities. · Shop online. Online shopping has traditionally been dominated by big box retailers. However, many small businesses increased their e-commerce capabilities to generate revenue. Shoppers concerned about shopping in person this holiday season should explore the delivery and curbside pickup options available at locally owned small businesses. Even businesses that have not traditionally been allowed to deliver, such as breweries and wineries, have been able to do so during the outbreak, giving consumers unlimited online shopping options. · Purchase gift cards. Gift cards take the guesswork out of holiday shopping, and such cards are easily shipped or even emailed to loved ones. That’s a significant benefit during the 2020 holiday season, when delivery times are
expected to be lengthy. Gift cards to local businesses simplify holiday shopping, support small businesses and help shoppers avoid potential delivery delays. · Share your experience. Word-of-mouth is vital to small businesses at any time, and can be especially valuable as these companies try to overcome the challenges posed by the COVID-19 outbreak. Holiday shoppers can share their experiences with local businesses via social media. Share information about the lengths local small businesses have gone to in regard to safety measures, order fulfillment and their delivery and pickup efforts. Such sharing may compel
neighbors and friends to follow your lead and provide vital support to local businesses in need this holiday season.
communities, and the holiday season provides a great opportunity to support such
firms as they look to recover from a difficult year.
