Dine With Us In...

Canadian Lakes In 1963 Donald Bollman had a vision and that vision still rings through to a community where members and their guests delight in private amenities nestled into the lush woodlands that only the Michigan landscape can offer... The Canadian Lakes amenities is just another reason why, the good life is found here. Canadian Lakes has multiple bodies of water. The Main Canadian Lake is a large body of water that connects to several adjacent lakes. Waterskiing and speed boating are enjoyed on West Canadian and the Main Lake. The connecting lakes are restricted to no-wake boating. Top it all off with an exclusive private and modern 350-site campground. Yes, Canadian Lakes… the GOOD life.

Missaukee County’s Festival of the Pines celebrates local history Missaukee County is one of Michigan’s best kept, most widely known secrets. With beautiful, rolling countryside dotted with lakes, woods and stunning and natural resources, the county is a warm and embracing home to many, and a welcoming vacation destination to many others. Founded in 1871, Missaukee County is one of the many Michigan counties and communities created by limbering industry and populated

early on largely by lumberjacks and their families. Today, cutting down forests is no longer a lead industry, but trees are still very, very important with Missaukee farmers being the leaders of growing Christmas trees. The rich farmland supports large dairy farms as well as other areas of agriculture. The beautiful countryside also makes Missaukee County a huge draw to recreational ac-

There is an annual nod to the first settlers and lumberjacks as well as today’s Christmas tree growers with the exciting Festival of the Pines — taking place this year Sept. 17-20. The Festival of Pines begins on Thursday night and visitors are encouraged to join in the celebration.

SPARTA

History of Sparta

The first settlers who arrived in the area of Sparta, Michigan, (population 8,000) in 1844 discovered rich land and abundant streams. Within a few years, the Village of Sparta was established. The first railroad reached Sparta in 1872, linking the community with Grand Rapids and ensuring the progress and prosperity of the area. Most of Sparta’s settlers were farmers. In 1873, the principle products were corn, grains, potatoes, hay, wool, and maple sugar. Dairy farming became, and still is, a major agricultural activity in the area. But by the turn of the century, many farmers switched from traditional crops to growing fruit, mainly apples and peaches. Today, along with its agricultural and industrial base, Sparta has developed services from banking to retail and offers easy access to a major metropolitan area.

Visit Sparta Today Facebook page for any upcoming fall and Winter events

In 1844, the first settlers began arriving in what is now Sparta Township. By 1846, Jonathan Nash, the founder of Sparta arrived, calling the settlement Nashville, until he found out there was already a Nashville, Michigan. He then renamed the village Sparta, and was officially incorporated into a village in 1883. Sparta has two museums in operation today reflecting on the history of the establishment of Sparta with the Myers Schoolhouse Museum and the T.S. & M Railroad Depot. 22

So much to do and see in Isabella County Editor’s note: Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, certain establishments/events may be cancelled or postponed after publication. For a full updated list of all that Isabella County has to offer, visit mountpleasantwow.com, downtownmp.com and isabellacounty.org. As the home of Central Michigan University and Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort, Isabella County is well known among Michigan residents as a top destination in central lower Michigan. Indeed, the reputation is well deserved. CMU has more than 16,000 students on its Mount Pleasant campus, helping bring a vibrant down-

32

town to life, as well as a pleasant tailgate scene come fall and wintertime. Soaring Eagle has a wide assortment of games to play and hosts a number of shows and concerts every year. But Isabella County — located centrally at the crossroads of M-20 and U.S. 127 — can offer so much more. Fall and winter is the perfect time to visit — when the leaves on the trees at Deerfield Nature Park are turning orange and brown, when kayakers and tubers are enjoying the lazy Chippewa River before it turns to ice and Papa’s Pumpkin Patch is teeming with children, excited for the

holidays. Those interested in shopping and exploring can visit Mount Pleasant’s various shops and restaurants, which offer traditional small-town hospitality. The active among us can have a blast in Isabella County as well. Slip on your ice skates and head to the I.C.E. Arena or get a little wild and crazy with a tumble at The Jump Station, where a trampoline park, foam pit, inflatables and more can turn an average day into a truly memorable event. Golfing is extremely popular in the area, too.
