More couples are embracing edgy, adventurous weddings
For the Edge
Brides and grooms once felt compelled to conform to the trappings of traditional weddings. From uber-romantic vows to pastel colors to the penultimate white tiered cake, various wedding components were long considered must-haves. But modern couples are increasingly expressing their individuality, and even embracing more edgy and adventurous elements, when planning their weddings. According to The Knot, a leading bridal resource and information site, today’s weddings are not what they were just a few years ago. Bold colors, exotic cakes and nontraditional foliage, are just some of the elements modern couples are embracing to set their weddings apart. Adventurous locales Vineyards and catering halls can be great places to tie the knot, but couples who like to push the envelope are looking to more adventurous locales to impart their unique spin on their weddings. Sharing vows atop a mountain crest at the end of a favorite hiking trail or on a roller coaster at a theme park that harkens back to a first date are some adventurous places to tie the knot. Outside-the-box menus Couples may want to break with tradition by offering a wide
selection of foods at their receptions. These foods can include items that fit with their specific ethnic cuisines, gourmet comfort foods (think cocktail franks wellington), or foods that fit with their dietary choices, such as organic or vegan options. Work with a caterer to provide a variety of tasty choices.
Bold wardrobe choices Brides can put new spins on their gowns by adding color and texture. Sequins, bold embroidery, shorter hemlines, and whatever adventurous fashion style you want to impart can be considered. If white isn’t your thing, that’s okay, too. Yellow and slate gray look great together. Gentlemen can choose to wear a black suit or any combination of color and style they want to make a dramatic impression. Full of flavor Cakes don’t have to be white with white buttercream. In fact, couples can make things even more tasty by incorporating favorite flavor combinations into their cakes. For example, a chocolate and caramel filling reminiscent of a candy bar might be something to consider. Modern couples are embracing bold, unique and edgy components when planning their weddings. Putting an individualized spin on the ceremony and reception can make couples even more excited to tie the knot.

WOW On Broadway wedding-focused boutique hotel lives up to its name
By Jill Moon jmoon@hearst.com
ALTON — WOW Event Center and WOW On Broadway married an old bakery and a former law office to make events pop in settings that will WOW brides, grooms, bridal parties and guests. WOW Event Center and WOW On Broadway were recently named, collectively, the Best Wedding Venue in the Best of the Best of Madison County and Riverbend, a community-voted contest, powered by On The Edge of the Weekend, The Telegraph (Alton) and The Intelligencer (Edwardsville). No two events look the same at either WOW Event Center, at 513 E. 3rd St., or WOW On Broadway, at 630 E. Broadway, — the event center, a larger space, is the main wedding venue, and WOW On Broadway, a smaller venue and specialty bridal boutique hotel, as well as a weekly Airbnb, is perfect for more intimate affairs, such as small
ceremonies, showers, retirement parties or anything where family, friends or corporate affairs happen. Both WOW venues are literally within walking distance of each other, approximately one-quarter of one mile apart, in Alton. Brides, moms, bachelorettes and party throwers “bring their Pinterest boards to life” against both WOW event space’s backdrop of vintage and barn wood touches. “That’s what we say,” said Barbie Brynildsen, of Godfrey, who, along with her husband, Bryan, owns the WOW event destinations. “Both venues can be for your guests, with your vision and ideas.” From cozy family affairs to festive rollicking holiday parties to lavish wedding receptions, any occasion seems to fit with WOW’s aesthetic. The event business organically grew out of the Brynildsens’ upcycled furnishings adventure. The couple opened a home furnishings business more than four years ago,

WOW Event Center’s building has capacity for 293 people and the WOW On Broadway building has capacity for up to 100. Some of On Broadway’s occasions have since included an 80th birthday party, a retirement celebration and various showers, both bridal and baby. “We’re finding people don’t want to have parties in their home due to space, and we do all the clean up afterward,” Brynildsen noted. “We are doing more and more smaller events and there’s a real need for nicer venues for
smaller occasions.” The Brynildsens opened WOW’s second space, WOW On Broadway, a little more than one year ago, in the former home of Talbert and Associates law firm. The couple purchased the historic building from Jeannine Kelly. WOW Event Center also is in a historic building, formerly the home of Noll’s Bakery, which eventually became Colonial Bakery. “We have the same farmhouse tables, Chiavari chairs (in both venues) and the buildings lend themselves so people don’t have to do a lot of decorating,” Barbie Brynildsen said. “A chalkboard adorns the brick wall at WOW On Broadway, so people can display photos or write special messages. We have lanterns to put on tables.” WOW On Broadway even has a pool table, that if not rented for use, can be converted into an additional usable farmhouse table. “Most places you have to rent chairs and tables, that’s really a helpful savings,”

Brynildsen said. “You can move the tables and we work with clients to coordinate.” Both venues also have spacious outside features that add to usable space. Both WOW venues also feature a groom’s room, with a rustic feel and modern amenities. WOW’s 3rd Street event center features an XBox and a big screen television screen that grooms and their buddies have thoroughly enjoyed. When the Brynildsens purchased the Talbert building, Kelly already had the walls torn down to the brick and new hardwood flooring. The character of the WOW buildings is evident, each featuring exposed brick walls and other special touches, such as a massive, cherry-color winding wood staircase at On
Broadway. Wall-to-wall law books still line floor-to-ceiling, built-in shelves, from the law office’s distant past, making a perfect setting for photographs and for guests with finger foods and cocktails. While WOW Event Center has an inherent old-fashioned industrial feel, with exposed round heating ducts beautifully blended with shabby chic accents added by the Brynildsens, the Talbert building has a Victorian vibe, featuring an arched doorway seamlessly built into an exposed brick wall, which leads to the foyer with the staircase and library. One of the Brynildsens’ five sons, Stephen, 31, who lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is a contractor/entrepreneur who has done much of the renovation work at the WOW buildings, including extensive reconstruction within the Talbert building. The Talbert building’s upgrades are incorporated into its past

with newly created rooms, such as an updated kitchen and completely renovated guest bathrooms to create a wedding-focused boutique hotel at 630 E. Broadway. WOW On Broadway offers a specialized experience in lodging, whether one or two nights, for wedding parties and the people they want close on the big day. “The venue is designed for two-night stays on the weekends,” Barbie Brynildsen said, “allowing couples to have their rehearsal dinner, bridal prep area, after party and a brunch
the morning after the reception.” In December 2018, the Brynildsens opened WOW On Broadway and in August 2019, they hosted their first hotel guests. WOW On Broadway is actually a smaller event venue but with more “living” space than the 3rd Street venue where weddings typically are held. The boutique-hotel also offers a honeymoon suite, a four-bedroom suite and the ability to rent all or just a portion of the venue. The historic brick WOW On Broadway structure features both dreamy and practical spaces in its two-level accommodation. Its deluxe salon-style bridal suite includes a bedroom with a fireplace and a view of the Mississippi River. There also is open space with six bridesmaids’ vanities and a central oversized bride’s vanity, as well as an elegant ensuite

Each location offers a homey ambiance, while the bride’s parlor in WOW On Broadway feels majestic, with ornate mirrors in gilt-like frames and crystal chandeliers. “The boutique hotel accommodations do not interfere with smaller events taking place at WOW On Broadway,” Barbie Brynildsen noted. Brynildsen used her eye for decorating to design and furnish WOW On Broadway, which includes vintage, barn wood and industrial steampunk touches. “Both venues can be for ‘your’ guests, with ‘your’ vision and ideas,” she said. Bryan Brynildsen managed most of the buildings’ rehab, also personally doing some of the work himself, recruiting his son or hiring local contractors. Alton artist Ken Church lent his touch on the bridal party salon’s vanities and the suites’ fireplace hearths. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Recently unveiled letters from T.S. Eliot to his muse Emily Hale show how much he loved his longtime friend, but a statement from beyond the grave by the poet himself dismisses his feelings and shows how Eliot tries to rewrite the narrative of their relationship, scholars say. Hale donated Eliot’s letters to Princeton University Library more than 60 years ago with instructions that they could only be opened 50 years after she and Eliot died. The day they were made available at the Ivy League school, Eliot’s statement, written five years before his death, was released — as per his own instructions. In it, Eliot downplays his

love for Hale. “I came to see that my love for Emily was the love of a ghost for a ghost,” he wrote. Eliot scholar Frances Dickey, who was among the first to read the letters at the New Jersey school Thursday, said it was “unfortunate” that Eliot felt he had to deny his feelings for Hale. “That seemed a little harsh,” Dickey said. “She was his muse for many years.” Letters to Hale from 1930 — contained in the first of 14 boxes — show Eliot confessing his love for her. “They are extremely passionate,” Dickey said. “It’s really more than what I expected. They are very emotional, claiming that she inspired a lot of his poetry. She obviously played a really important role in his poetic life.”

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, January 9, 2020 • 15 his early letters trace the same narrative, Dickey said. In his statement, Eliot does admit he once loved Hale. “I fell in love with Emily Hale in 1912,” he wrote. He told her so two years later. “I have no reason to believe, from the way in which this declaration was received, that my feelings were returned,” Eliot wrote. He married his first wife, Vivienne HaighWood, in 1915, a year after his declaration. The two had a tumultuous, loveless marriage marred by Haigh-Wood’s mental illness and alleged infidelity. They separated in 1933. “Emily Hale would have killed the poet in me; Vivienne nearly was the death of me, but she kept the poet alive,” Eliot wrote. Hale eventually developed feelings for Eliot, but the poet writes that, as time went on, he realized “more and more how little Emily Hale and I had in common.” “It may be too harsh, to think that what she liked was my reputation rather than my work,” he wrote. Eliot scholar Anthony Cuda called that a “cold and untrue statement.” “He pursued her,” he said. “His earliest letters were ardent declarations of love. It’s not as if she chased after him.” In other letters, Eliot comments on the pain and happiness of intimacy, according to Dickey,
and even confesses his craving for alcohol and reveals details about his private life. Hundreds of letters still need to be read; only a few copies can be seen at a time at the library, and there are no copies available online. There are a few different reasons Eliot might be trying to rewrite history, the scholars say. Hale donated the letters while the two were still alive, and Eliot feared they might be released before the embargo date. Eliot had ordered the letters he’d received from Hale destroyed. “He was looking back on this and felt embarrassed and ashamed at the openness and vulnerability he allowed to come through at the time,” Cuda said. “He tried to do damage control.” But he also wanted to protect his second wife , Valerie, whom he calls his one true love. “But it’s a strange protectiveness,” Cuda said. “He was so devoted to Valerie and she to him. What the Emily Hale letters reveal — (Valerie) wasn’t the unique love of his life. He had a unique and tense experience before her.” The letters could reveal much more about Eliot’s private and poetic life and are already making waves among the literary community. Cuda called them “all we could have hoped for.” “What we want to do as consumers of the lives of others is simply understand them,” he said. “As usual, Eliot won’t be simplified.”

‘1917,’ ‘Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood’ win Golden Globes By JAKE COYLE AP Film Writer The 77th Golden Globes were meant to be a coronation for Netflix. Instead, a pair of big-screen epics took top honors Sunday, as Sam Mendes’ technically dazzling World War I tale “1917” won best picture, drama, and Quentin Tarantino’s radiant Los Angeles fable “Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood” won best film, comedy or musical. The wins for “1917” were a surprise, besting such favorites as Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” the leading nominee with six nods, and Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman.” Both are acclaimed Netflix releases but collectively took home just
one award, for Laura Dern’s supporting performance as a divorce attorney in “Marriage Story.” “The Irishman” was shut out. “1917” also won best director for Mendes. The film was made in sinuous long takes, giving the impression that the movie unfolds in one lengthy shot. “I hope this means that people will turn up and see this on the big screen, the way it was intended,” said Mendes, whose film expands nationwide Friday. Though set around the 1969 Manson m u rd e r s “ O n c e U p o n a Ti m e . . . i n Hollywood” was classified a comedy and had an easier path to victory than the more competitive drama category. Brad

Pitt won for best supporting actor, his first acting Globe since winning in 1996 for “12 Monkeys,” padding his front-runner status for the Oscars. Tarantino also won best screenplay. “I wanted to bring my mom, but I couldn’t because any woman I stand next to they say I am dating so it’d just be awkward,” Pitt said. Ricky Gervais, hosting the NBC-telecast ceremony for the fifth time, began the evening with an expletive-laden plea against hypocrisy, telling winners to stick to thanking their agent and their god. But throughout the night, winners seized their moment to speak about current events including the wildfires in Australia, rising tensions with Iran, women’s rights and the importance of LGBT trailblazers. Patricia Arquette, a winner for her performance in Hulu’s “The Act,” referenced the United States’ targeted killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, saying history wouldn’t remember the day for the Globes but will see “a country on the brink of war.” She urged all to vote in November’s presidential election. Gervais opened the show by stating that Netflix had taken over Hollywood. given its commanding 34 nominations coming into the Globes. “This show should just be me coming out going: ‘Well done, Netflix. You win everything tonight,” he said. As it turned out, he was wrong. Netflix won only two awards: Dern’s win plus one
for Olivia Colman’s performance in “The Crown.” It was a definite hiccup for the streaming service, which is aiming for its first best-picture win at the Academy Awards next month. Instead, the awards were widely spread out among traditional Hollywood studios, indie labels like A24, cable heavyweights like HBO and relative newcomers like Hulu. Renee Zelleweger (“Judy”) took home best actress in a drama, her fourth Globe. But, as always at the Globes, there were surprises. Taron Egerton, a regular presence on the awards circuit this year, won best actor in a comedy or musical for his Elton John in “Rocketman” — an honor many had pegged for Eddie Murphy (“Dolemite Is My Name”). Awkwafina, the star of the hit indie family drama “The Farewell,” became the first woman of Asian descent to win best actress in a comedy or musical. “If anything, if I fall upon hard times, I can sell this,” said Awkwafina, holding the award. Egyptian-American actor Ramy Youssef won best actor in a comedy series for his Hulu show “Ramy.” (Taking Gervais’ advice, he said “Allahu akbar.”) But the winners were otherwise largely white, something the Globes have been criticized for. Michelle Williams, who won best actress in a limited series for “Fosse/Verdon,” stood up for women’s reproductive rights in her acceptance speech. “When it’s time to vote, please do so in your self interest,” Williams said. “It’s what men have been doing for years, which is why the world looks so much like them.” Best actor has been this year ’s most competitive category, with nominees including Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”) and Antonio Banderas (“Pain and Glory”). But Joaquin Phoenix won for his loose-limbed performance in the divisive but hugely popular “Joker.” Phoenix gave a rambling speech that began with crediting the HFPA with the vegan meal served at the ceremony. Dern’s best supporting actress award for her performance as a divorce attorney in “Marriage Story,” was her fifth Globe. Her win denied Jennifer Lopez, the “Hustlers” star, her first major acting award. Best actor in a limited series went to Russell Crowe for the Showtime series “The Loudest Voice.” He wasn’t in attendance because of raging wildfires in his native Australia. “Make no mistake, the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate-changed based,” Crowe said in a statement read by presenters Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. Phoebe Waller-Bridge followed up her Emmy haul by winning best comedy series and best actress in a comedy series. She thanked former President Barack Obama for
17 • Thursday, January 9, 2020 • On the Edge of the Weekend putting “Fleabag” on his best-of-2019 list. With a grin, she added: “As some of you may know, he’s always been on mine.” HBO had a big night. “Chernobyl” won best limited series and for Stellan Skarsgård’s performance. The second season of “Succession” bested Netflix’s “The Crown” and Apple TV Plus’ first Globe nominee, “The Morning Show.” Brian Cox, the Rupert Murdoch-like patriarch of “Succession,” also won best actor in a drama series. Best foreign language film went to Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite,” the Cannes Palme d’Or winning sensation from South Korea. Despite being an organization of foreign journalists, the HFPA doesn’t include foreign films in its top categories, thus ruling out “Parasite,” a likely best picture nominee at next month’s Oscars.
“Once you overcome the inch-tall-barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films,” Bong said, speaking through a translator. Tom Hanks, also a nominee for his supporting turn as Fred Rogers in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” received the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award. The Carol Burnett Award, a similar honorary award given for television accomplishment, went to Ellen DeGeneres. She was movingly introduced by Kate McKinnon who said DeGeneres’ example guided her in her own coming out. “The only thing that made it less scary was seeing Ellen on TV,” said McKinnon. Hanks’ speech had its own emotional moment when he caught sight of his wife and four children at a table near the stage and
choked up. “A man is blessed with the family’s sitting down front like that,” Hanks said. Elton John and Bernie Taupin won the evening’s most heavyweight battle, besting Beyonce and Taylor Swift. Their “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” won best song. “It’s the first time I’ve ever won an award with him,” Elton said of his song-writing partner. “Ever.” The roughly 90 voting members of the HFPA have traditionally had little in common with the nearly 9,000 industry professionals that make up the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The HFPA is known for calculatingly packing its show with as much star power as possible, occasionally rewarding even the likes of “The Tourist” and “Burlesque.” Sunday’s show may have added to that
history with an unexpected award for “Missing Link” for best animated feature film over films like “Toy Story 4” and “Frozen 2.” No one was more surprised than its director, Chris Butler. “I’m flabbergasted,” he said. But the Globes could be unusually influential this year. The condensed time frame of this year ’s award season (the Oscars are Feb. 9) brings the Globes and the Academy Awards closer. Balloting for Oscar nominations began Thursday. Voters were sure to be watching. One thing they couldn’t see much of: female filmmakers. Only men were nominated for best director and none of the 10 films up for best picture was directed by a woman. Time’s Up, the activist group that debuted at the black-clad 2018 Globes, called the omission “unacceptable.”

Cater wedding menus to guests’ dietary needs For the Edge Gone are the days when wedding reception menus were limited to the onesize-fits-all offerings of meat, chicken or fish. Thanks to modern diets, couples hoping to accommodate guests may need to provide a wide array of food choices. It is impossible to pinpoint an exact number, as there are no definitive surveys classifying all dietary preferences, but there are believed to be around 7.9 million people in the United States who follow a vegetarian-based diet. Of those people, around one million are strictly vegan, according to data in The Economist. In addition, NYU Langone Health says one-third of Americans are trying to avoid gluten. The Gluten Free Agency, which is a consulting group dedicated to helping advertisers, says some nine million people in Canada are going glutenfree now for medical or personal reasons. Toss in the scores of people with peanut or other allergies and even more caution is needed when designing wedding menus. Savvy couples who have guests’ health and comfort in mind recognize the importance of offering a varied meal plan
for wedding-related parties and receptions. The following are some ideas to consider when planning wedding menus. • Consider a buffet-style service. Although couples might like the tradition and flair that a seated/plated meal offers, it creates a much more limited selection of meal options. Buffet-style dinner service often provides couples with multiple choices, and it’s much more likely they can come up with a combination that caters to any food allergies or dietary restrictions guests may have. • Opt for food stations. In lieu of one long buffet table, a modern approach is to have staffed food stations. Foods as well as their ingredients can be clearly stated on food table placards so guests can make appropriate choices. • Offer alternatives for dessert. Wedding cake can be a challenge to someone with a gluten sensitivity or an egg or a nut allergy. While not every guest indulges in dessert, make it a point to offer an alternative to cake. Perhaps a groom’s cake can be revamped into gluten-free cookie bars or a nut-free trifle. Couples who know in advance which types of dietary restrictions their guests have can work with caterers to devise a menu that suits everyone.

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge
Two divergent thoughts hit me recently one morning as I flipped over to a Wednesday on my “Jeopardy!” calendar: “There’s only one more week until Christmas,” and “Oh, man, there’s at least 15 movies I need to see in the next two weeks.” So, I went through my usual routine, worked a long day and then, after dinner, headed to a later evening showing of “Richard Jewell.” Maybe late night on a Wednesday is a bad time to go, but as it turned out, I was the only one interested in this particular showing and I enjoyed myself. It’s a solid drama, features a great lead and some stellar supporting performances drawn out by director Clint Eastwood, famous for letting his cast do what they were hired to do. Eastwood is a master craftsman and “Richard Jewell” is another late-career win for the filmmaker. Richard Jewell (Paul Walter Hauser) was the security guard wrongfully investigated by
‘Richard Jewell’ is a gem
the FBI as the perpetrator of the Centennial Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta during the 1996 Summer Olympics. He was an observant, gung ho law abiding sentinel, who heroically saved many lives. He discovered a bundle of pipe bombs and evacuated an area before the explosives detonated. The explosives ultimately killed one nearby woman and caused the death of a man in the impending chaos. The actual bomber was Eric Rudolph, and I honestly couldn’t have told you that before I went to see this movie. But Richard Jewell is a name I could quote you on demand. He was all over the news that summer before my sophomore year of high school. The portly “rent-a-cop” was drawn through the mud by everyone from Tom Brokaw to Katie Couric. In the post-O.J. Simpson world of media in the the second half of the ’90s, Jewell was the next coming for around-theclock coverage. While I love the media when they get it right, boy, did they botch this one. Before partisan reporting, there was only the demand for the big scoop. And that’s where this movie gets its mojo.
The now-deceased Kathy Scruggs (played by Olivia Wilde in the film) was a reporter for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and she is depicted abhorrently in this film. Real life coverage today has said the movie gives Scruggs a bad name and besmirches her career with the same alleged relish that she took in destroying Jewell’s more than 20 years ago. If Scruggs was ever wicked, Wilde makes her a monster in”Richard Jewell.” Desperate for a fresh take on the bombing story, so in a dive bar the Scruggs character seduces FBI Special Agent Tom Shaw (Jon Hamm) and trades a hotel room romp for dirt that the hero of the day also is their chief suspect. Jewell, often clueless as to what’s going on, is left in shambles by having to think the world is against him in his finest hour. A former sheriff’s deputy, Jewell only wants the respect of the badge from his fellow officers and he continuously goes too far to clear his own name and gives the investigation ever more ammunition to come after him. Enter Watson Bryant (Sam Rockwell). Bryant is a former co-worker and fringe friend of Jewell’s. As the only lawyer that the
Sam Rockwell, from left, Kathy Bates and Paul Walter Hauser in a scene from “Richard Jewell.” (Claire Folger/Warner Bros. Pictures via AP)
embattled Jewell knows, he reaches out to Bryant for help. Bryant is a shoulder to cry on, a taskmaster when needed, and a supporter for Jewell and his mother, Bobi Jewell (Kathy Bates). While the movie is quite good — despite negative press about the Kathy Scruggs depiction — it’s also a little dry. The bombing is ultra-realistic, right down to the group scenes of blue jean shorts-wearing, “Macarena”-dancing spectators, but that’s a brief moment that comes early in the film and long before we’re able to appreciate the fine work done by the two leads. Hauser is best known for his 2017 role in another great throwback to the ’90s, “I, Tonya,” and this gives him further cache to explore drama. Bryant is a departure for Rockwell. It’s a fully grown-up part that he imbues with periods of sweetness and compassion, principally missing from his other, wackier character performances. I appreciated the change. “Richard Jewell” runs 131 minutes and is rated R for language, including some sexual references, and brief bloody images. I give this film three stars out of four.

28 • Thursday, January 9, 2020 • On the Edge of the Weekend By Vicki Bennington For The Edge Imo’s Pizza has been around for many years, and it has become one of the “go-to” places for pizza, salads, sandwiches and more, in Edwardsville, Bethalto and Godfrey, as well as all around St. Louis. With its old-time pizzaplace feel, Imo’s reminds me of local joints that I went to when I was a teenager. That’s a complement. It doesn’t have a chain feel. It feels like an Italian pizza place. Vicki We stopped by recently Bennington for a lunch special, with me ordering the deluxe salad, with pepperoni, black olives and onion (I asked them to hold the cheese). I really think it usually comes without onions, but they were a bonus that day, and I wasn’t complaining. I also ordered toasted ravioli appetizer on the side. My husband ordered the usual — a personal-size all-meat pizza — and for his
side, he asked for cheesy bread. I’m not a fan of Provel, though I do eat mozzarella cheese, but for those — like my husband — who like Provel, Imo’s is a favorite. Imo’s was the originator of Provel on pizza, or as Imo’s says, “The square beyond compare.” The pies are cut into squares. That’s definitely reminiscent of authentic Italian pizza. I eat the corner squares because they have less cheese. I know. I’m weird. An interesting note: Provel cheese is actually a processed cheese, native to the St. Louis area, and is a mix of Swiss, provolone and cheddar cheeses. It is said to have been created in 1947, by Costa Grocery (now Roma Grocery on the Hill) and the Hoffman Dairy Company of Wisconsin (now part of Kraft Foods), with the goal of coming up with a cheese that melts well, but breaks off when you bite down (less stringy). One rumor about the name states that Provel comes from the word provolone, with the “one” removed since it is made of more than one type of cheese. Imo’s is also credited as the originators of
“authentic St. Louis-style pizza,” consisting of a thin, cracker-type crust covered in edgeto-edge toppings, then layered with Provel cheese. The deluxe salad with house Italian dressing is always a full meal for me. If you order the large, you can split it in half and have two meals. Toasted ravioli is a nice appetizer for sharing (or saving for later). It was cooked just right, and the sauce was rich and meaty. The cheesy bread came in as advertised — a lot of cheese on crunchy French-style bread. Our lunch specials also came with a large soft drink or iced tea for the same price. You can also choose a pasta or sandwich mid-day special. From the regular menu, the pizzas come in small, medium, large or even extra-large in specialties, like, deluxe, veggie, barbecue chicken and Imo’s Egg-ceptional (interesting), a “breakfast” pizza, in addition to the all-meat. Or you can always create your own. Other salads offered include the chef with
roast beef, salami, ham and a hard-boiled egg, a house salad, Caesar or chicken Caesar. Pastas that look really generous include spaghetti and meatballs, mostaccioli, baked lasagna, cannelloni or manicotti. Provel bites, and here’s a new one for a pizza place – Imo’s fries — as well as, garlic bread and chicken wings are among appetizer choices, or try a sandwich, like, roast beef and cheese, turkey club or meatball and cheese. It’s not like you don’t have a lot of choices. You can come back day after day and not have the same thing twice. The first Imo’s was opened on The Hill in St. Louis in 1964, by Ed and Margie Imo, who later — another claim to fame — became the first pizza place to offer delivery in the St. Louis area. Hmmm … did not know that. Incidentally, Ed and Margie Imo eventually bought Costa Grocery, who held the only right to distribute Provel in St. Louis. This ensured there was always an endless supply for their ever-growing pizza enterprise.
