Organized Chaos

By Andrew Malo For The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — Experimental trio of musicians and performance artists Chaos Magick will perform its pianocentered premiere at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Dunham Hall Theater. Chaos Magick, spearheaded by pianist Angela Kim, this performance will be a one-of-a-kind concert involving all of the senses. The performance includes classic repertoire, electronic sound, graphic design, animation and dance. Created by artists of different genres from across the country — Michael Robert Boswell, a graphic designer, from San Luis Obispo, California, Peter John Kearney, a visual/ motion designer, of Brooklyn, New York, and Kim, an SIUE assistant professor. “Chaos Magick” will spotlight SIUE assistant professor of piano Angela Kim in an evocative, multi-media experience, featuring Boswell and Kearney. This performance also will incorporate the work of composer Dan Van Hassel and choreographer Kevin Hockenberry, an assistant professor in SIUE’s Department of The-

ater and Dance. “Chaos Magick” starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Dunham Hall Theater. Chaos Magick will take the conventional concert experience to a different level. Supplemental to the core trio are modern art and its interpretation. The group takes live piano performance and integrates it with design, animation, electronic sound and dance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30. “Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is very good to their faculty, actively promotes scholarly work of their professors and that is why we chose to start here,” Kim said. Kim’s road to “Chaos” started in Seoul, South Korea. “I knew I wanted to be a pianist all along,” she said. “I made a serious decision to pursue it when I was five,” she recalled. Kim started competing at 7 years old and won the Soong-Eui Competition at 9 years old. She came to the United States in high school to study with one of Korea’s most recognized pianist and her pedagogue, Wha Kyung Byun, of Boston, who is a longtime faculty member of the New

England Conservatory. After Kim made her debut recital at age 15, she appeared as a soloist with major orchestras and performed throughout South Korea. She graduated from Seoul National University and was awarded the Presidential Gold Medal. Since coming to the U.S., Kim studied piano at New England Conservatory with Byun’s husband, Russell Sherman, and chamber music with Rudolf Kolisch, a Viennese violinist, leader of the Kolisch String Quartet and a major advocate of advanced 20th-century music between the two World Wars. The Boston Globe described Kim’s playing as “rapturous” and “poetic.” Kim received the prestigious Henry Cobos Endowed Piano Prize for demonstrating excellence in piano performance at the Eastman School of Music in New York. In 2017, she received the Emerging Artist Award from the St. Botolph Club Foundation in Boston and the Free For All Concert Fund from the Boston Foundation, a fund that brings live classical performances to underprivileged communities in the greater Boston area. Also in 2017, Kim accepted her SIUE

position. “I have never lived in the Midwest before. It has been unique and great,” she said. “That’s the beauty of theUnited States. Korea is such a small country, but the U.S.A. is huge and every area has its own culture.” Even through the years of practicing

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, January 23, 2020 • 5 classical piano up to 10 hours a day, Kim had an interest in where classical music could go — collaborating with experimental groups and artists, as well as performing new music. “I am classical-trained, of course, but, I think, it is every musicians’ responsibility to promote and understand what is happening now with music,” Kim said. “I listen to all sorts of music,” she noted. “It is important to me and I like to bring it to my performance. It creates a better musical world for everyone.” The collaboration that creates Chaos

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville assistant professor Angela Kim at the piano. Kim will perform in “Chaos Magick,” an evocative, multi-media experience, featuring Michael Robert Boswell, a graphic designer, from San Luis Obispo, California, and Peter John Kearney, a visual/motion designer, of Brooklyn, New York.

Magick pushes classical music into a modern realm. “It started when Michael Boswell sent me a video with no sound and I instantly thought of Mozart,” Kim recalled. For that video, she recorded four tracks of piano, including a Mozart piece, but also she incorporated improvisation, using a “prepared piano.” American composer John Cage used extensively prepared piano, when a piano’s sound is altered by placing objects on or between the strings. The graphics result in projected modern visuals of computerized 3D images, such as pyramids and fire, accompanied by traditional Mozart compositions, interrupted by Kim’s percussive improvisation from a prepared piano for a full sensory experience. “We want to bring people to classical concerts who do not traditionally come,” Kim said. “We are looking at venues that are different than the usual, like, immersive art spaces and studios and Dunham Hall in Edwardsville is the perfect place to start.” For more information and ticket information, visit www.siue.edu/arts-andissues/current-season/ .

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington Hello Texas!

By Vicki Bennington For The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — There’s nothing like a good prime rib. I stress the word “good,” because prime rib is not good at just any place, you know. I have ordered prime rib where it is overcooked. I’ve ordered it when it was undercooked. I’ve been served prime rib that had way too much fat — or not enough. A good prime rib has to have some fat for flavoring, and just the right amount looks appealing. The 10-ounce prime rib that I recently ordered at Edwardsville’s Texas Roadhouse — at the bartender’s recommendation — was cooked to perfection, with just enough fat marbled through to make it juicy and flavorful, but not so much that I ended up with too little meat. And tender Vicki … yes, ma’am. From what Bennington I’ve been told, the fat that surrounds a prime rib when it’s on your plate is a fat-marbled muscle. You don’t have to eat the outer fat, but it definitely does its job by helping to make the meat juicy and tender. I started out with a house salad, and

though I often order a Caesar, I didn’t regret my order, with enough tomatoes, egg and crunchy croutons that it could have almost been a meal all by itself. Especially when paired with the housemade yeast rolls smothered in cinnamon butter. My friend tried the Caesar, and she was not disappointed, either. For a main course, she chose the filet medallions (three filets, totaling nine ounces), topped with a peppercorn sauce, and though it normally comes served over seasoned rice, she chose to substitute with mashed potatoes, and had an order of carrots on the side. Now that sounds like a nice Texas-style dinner, if I ever heard of one. From the hand-cut steak menu, we could have been really brave and chose something called “Road Kill,” chop steak smothered with sautéed onions and mushrooms, and jack cheese. Or maybe the New York strip, known for its great flavor. Both of our meals were served up with a glass of William Hill Chardonnay. We sat at the bar, and I think that might have added to the Texas “roadhouse” atmosphere, especially with contemporary country music, the Texas décor, and the hustle and bustle of the bartenders. Full

meal service was available — even at the bar — and since there were only two of us, sitting side-by-side, it was perfect. I think it’s a well-kept secret that the bar is open seating. If you see a stool, you can grab it; you don’t have to put in your name. Maybe I should have kept that to myself, but what the heck, maybe someone else will get lucky enough to find some “empties” when they don’t have time to wait for a table. If you think you would have had room before eating all that, you could try the fried pickles for an appetizer or rattlesnake bites (does that say Texas — or maybe Midwest — or what?), grilled shrimp or a basket of killer ribs. And the entrees go beyond steaks, with chicken specialties and country dinners — even dockside favorites, fried catfish anyone? When it’s all said and done, keep your fork. The best might be yet to come, with desserts, like, Granny’s apple classic or a big ol’ brownie with ice cream! You can always snack before, during or after your meal on an endless supply of in-shell peanuts. Texas Roadhouse is located at 6640 Edwardsville Crossing Drive, in Edwardsville. For more information, visit texasroadhouse.com.

How to transform a fixer-upper For Metro East House Hunters The real estate market will always have its ups and downs, but real estate is an oftprofitable investment. Real estate investors do their investing for various reasons. Some see a house as a place to hang their hats for years and years, while others look at properties as nothing more than investments. Buying a home with the intent to fix it up and resell it is called a “fix and flip.” In such situations, investors buy homes at below-market prices before refurbishing the homes with the goal of recouping their initial investment and then some when the homes are ultimately put back on the market. Flipping has become popular for both expert remodelers and novice investors. RealtyTrac®, the nation’s leading source for comprehensive housing data, noted in its “Year-End and Q4 2015 U.S. Home Flipping” report that 5.5 percent of all single family home and condo sales during the year were flipped properties. This marked an increase from the same time the previous year. Investing in a fixer-upper requires a leap of faith and a vision of what the home can look like in the future. Turning a real estate lemon into lemonade requires certain skills and a good measure of patience. The following are some guidelines to get anyone started. • Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Make an honest assessment of your abilities and which renovations, if any, you can handle. If you are unskilled or inexperienced working with your hands, then it can be easy for an investment property to quickly become a money pit. Before purchasing a property, hire a trained home inspector to tour the home with you and point out all of the areas that will need renovation. With this list, begin getting estimates on how much money the work will entail. Determine if this fits with your budget or not. You do not want to invest so much that it exceeds what you could feasibly recoup when it comes time to sell. • Overlook cosmetic things when visiting properties. Cosmetic issues include all of the easily replaceable items in a home, such as carpeting, appliances, interior paint colors and cabinetry. Focus on the bones of the house — the architectural integrity and those little touches that you envision having a “wow” factor. • Seek the help of experts. Some flippers think they’ll save the most money by doing all of the work themselves. This isn’t always the case. Professional architects, designers and contractors may help you save money. Contractors have an intimate knowledge of where to buy materials and may be able to negotiate prices based on wholesale or trade

costs. In addition, experts can help you avoid common pitfalls because they’ve already done this type of work time and again. It’s smart to rely on expert advice, even if it means investing a little bit more. • Save money by doing some work yourself. While the pros may tackle the more complex parts of a given project, such as rewiring electricity or changing the footprint of a home, you can still be involved. Ask to participate in demolition, such as taking down walls or removing old materials from the home. Such participation may be fun, and

it can save you substantial amounts of money on labor. • Recognize that not everything must be completely redone. Realize that, in some instances, a coat of paint and some new accents may be all you need to transform a space. For example, if kitchen cabinets are in good condition, see if they can be refaced or painted instead of replaced entirely. Install new door pulls/handles to add visual interest. Look for some ready-made items, such as bookshelves, instead of installing custom carpentry.

• Think about what the buyer wants and not what you want. Renovate with an eye toward prospective buyers’ needs. Keep things neutral and accommodating. Research the latest trends to understand what buyers might be seeking in a home. You want potential buyers to envision themselves moving right in. Renovating a fixer-upper takes time, but it can be a worthwhile project, and one that can help anyone turn a profit in a booming real estate market.

How to employ staging to impress buyers For Metro East House Hunters Homeowners must consider a variety of factors when putting their homes on the market. One of the more important things to remember is the benefits of making a strong first impression on prospective buyers. That’s why many homeowners rely on staging when selling their homes. Staging requires more than just clearing out clutter or baking a batch of cookies to create a welcoming aroma. Staging helps potential buyers visualize the potential of a home and see themselves owning and living in the property. While homeowners can effectively stage their own homes, sometimes it is

well worth the investment to call in a professional designer or stager. Stagers often work their magic on vacant properties or those that have been sitting on the market awhile. A stager conducts careful research into the market of a particular area and learns about the neighborhood before deciding how to appeal to likely buyers. For example, when staging a coastal home, a stager may go with nautical themes and create the impression of a relaxing and laid-back property for entertaining by the beach. Certain rules should be followed when staging a home. Furniture, decor and other amenities in the home should not detract from the house itself. Instead, such items should complement the architecture and

feel of the space. Here are some additional staging suggestions. • Remove personal effects. Homeowners are urged to replace personal photographs with neutral artwork and remove other decorative items that reflect their personalities. As an example, an avid outdoorsman probably will want to remove hunting trophies. The goal is to help buyers see themselves in the home, and that can be difficult if existing residents’ personal effects are everywhere. • Put away nonessential items. Staging helps homeowners create dream spaces. Coffeemakers, backpacks hanging on the wall and dishes in the drainboard may be part of daily living, but they can make it hard for buyers to see a home’s potential.

Store such items before holding an open house. • Maximize lighting. Whenever possible, take down or open window treatments to display architectural moldings and let in as much natural light as possible. • Opt for neutral colors and furnishings. Use neutral taupe and gray paint to keep homes prime for buyers. Homeowners who have more eclectic or colorful tastes can put their items in storage and rent neutral furnishings until the home sells. Staging can improve the chances that a house sells quickly. Staging helps potential buyers see themselves in the space without distractions from the previous owners’ decorating or belongings.

NHL All-Star Game weekend ultimate Downtown St. Louis hot spots itinerary

The Edge

ST. LOUIS — The day we’ve been waiting for is nearly here! The NHL All-Star Game is Saturday, Jan. 25, but there are events leading up to the big day so everyone has the chance to join in on the fun in honor of our Stanley Cup Champions the St. Louis Blues. While you’re Downtown rooting on your favorite players, check out these nearby hotspots for food, drinks and fun from Thursday, Jan. 22, through Sunday, Jan. 26. • Sports bars The options are endless for places to grab a drink before, after or even during the game. With its 40-foot television and two-story entertain-

ment plaza, FOX Sports Midwest Live! in Ballpark Village is the place to be for all things sports. You’ll also love the local beers at Brewhouse Historical Sports Bar, and the Irish fare at Maggie O’Brien’s Pub, a classic spot for St. Louis sports watching. Bonus: Though Maggie O’s is a short walk from The Enterprise Center, it offers shuttle service to and from the stadium. • Breakfast spots If you’re Downtown for the whole weekend, you won’t want to miss the most important meal of the day. Head over to Rooster for a taste of their signature crêpes and awardwinning bloody Marys. If a craving for pancakes hits you after a late night, there’s no better place than Chris’ at the Docket — they serve

breakfast all day! You’d be remiss not to include Kaldi’s Citygarden — a favorite local coffee shop with breakfast options and pastries ready for you to get on the go. • Lunch and dinner For lunch or dinner, you’ll love Schlafly Tap Room. One of the country’s original craft breweries, the Tap Room brews a select 2,000 barrels per year — not to mention the great food and rustic charm. Broadway Oyster Bar is another St. Louis-favorite for Cajun food and live music. And, if you’re looking for an authentic St. Louis Italian experience, look no further than Charlie Gitto’s on The Hill, said to be the inventor of a regional original — toasted ravioli — and “go-to” dining spot for many of sports’ greatest heroes.

And, if you’re curious where St. Louis’ Stanley Cup Champions got their name, check out the National Blues Museum (read: the music, not the hockey team) — the only U.S. museum dedicated exclusively to preserving and honoring the story of the blues, also with St. Louis origins,

People At The Party The Launch Party at EXO Lounge, held just over a week ago, in Edwardsville, was off the hook. So many people were there, it won’t be hard to find a recognizable face in this crowd.

Eugene Peebles with “The Talking Sax” killed it and his mash up with DJ Jeffrey “Greasy” Grieshaber was unbelievable.

‘1917’ about the magnificent journey home

When “1917,” directed by Sam Mendes, was announced the Golden Globe Awards’ Best Drama, it came as a mild shock to many, only because there is never certainty with the Golden Globes. But “1917,” an incredible film of the highest order, is set during World War I in spring 1917 during Germany’s retreat to the Hindenburg Line. The plot is simple and easy to follow, but I have to caution you that if you can’t arrive to the cinema on time, wait until the next showing. The adventure kicks into high gear with some gentle immediacy. British Lance Corporal Tom Blake (DeanCharles Chapman) is summoned to an audience with General Erinmore (Colin Firth) on a bright afternoon between battles in a vicious campaign. He’s asked to recruit a partner and brings along his pal, Lance Corporal William Schofield (George MacKay). The two young men are given a precious mission, in which they must hand deliver orders nine miles away to a unit poised to charge at dawn the next day. New intelligence at the time guaranteed the allies would be met by an ambush of German soldiers, which led to the slaughter of two battalions, totaling 1,600 men, including Blake’s brother. Thus, the British pair must make their rela-

tively short journey through endless trenches of “no man’s land,” filled with mud, water, blood and death, the hopefully-abandoned German line and a destroyed French village. The duo has no time to decide. They’re off and running before canteens are half-filled and grenades barely distributed. Because of many spectacular efforts of the behind-the-scenes technicians, “1917” is an amazing achievement that left me on the proverbial edge of my seat until the closing shots. Cinematographer Roger Deakins, perhaps the greatest living member in the profession, uses long and elaborate shots, which give the impression of the movie being shot in one continuous take. Composer Thomas Newman created a compassionate, strolling score that builds to towering crescendos at note-perfect times to both indicate a turn in the action and to keep audiences invested as the protagonists trudge through the trenches. There’s never downtime in a war movie, given that even expository scenes are built on the foundation that every solider is fighting for his very life. They fight it to get home. And so do our troops, overcoming sniper fire, biplane crashes and hunger. It’s inconsequential whether the message is delivered in time, preventing chaos or not. This movie is about that magnificent journey home and it wildly succeeds. “1917” runs 119 minutes and is rated R for violence, some disturbing images, and language. I give this film four stars out of four.
