Popular punk pop duo The Knuckles tapped for ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ adaptation

ST. LOUIS — A combination of hip hop and a classic fairy tale makes a perfect partnership for the stage. Metro Theater Company, St. Louis’ premiere professional theater for youth and families, continues its refreshed 202021 season with the virtual production of “Jacked!,” available to view via virtual streaming through March 31 at www. metroplays.org. Written by award-winning playwright Idris Goodwin (“Ghost,” “And In This Corner: Cassius Clay”) the play is inspired by the fairy tale “Jack

and the Beanstalk.” Metro Theater Company reworked what was initially planned as an inperson touring production into an imaginative, fully virtual experience that combines hand-drawn animation, spoken word poetry and behind-thescenes studio footage. “Jacked!” is set to a fresh, energetic hip-hop score by Jackie “Jackpot” Sharp, featuring vocals and rap by the popular St. Louis punk pop duo, The Knuckles. Actor Jarris L. Williams, who recently played the lead character in Metro Theater Company’s production of “Ghost,” takes on the role of Jack.

“Jacked!” is “Jack and the Beanstalk” with a modern-day twist. In this re-imagined world, Jack and his mother struggle to live happily ever after. When his farm, which was once green and fertile, can no longer feed him, when his community can no longer support him, and when his mother can’t take care of him, Jack takes matters into his own hands. After climbing the beanstalk and stealing the giant’s goose, Jack flees home and discovers the goose’s golden eggs have a mysterious, intoxicating power that turns his world upside down. How can something so good make everything

bad? Can Jack turn things around to save his village? Created and developed for children ages 5-11, “Jacked!” fuses storytelling and poetry with hip hop and break-beat music in a multisensory virtual production designed to engage the audience on multiple levels, coming as close as possible to the active engagement of a live performance. It’s also an allegory that uses the familiar story of “Jack and the Beanstalk” as a launching point to explore the impact of substance abuse for very young audiences, encouraging a gentle dialogue about its effects in com-

Food For Thought… with Vicki Bennington

Old-fashioned snackin’ — and more By Vicki Bennington For The Edge Popcorn, popcorn, I’ve always screamed for popcorn. It’s probably my favorite snack, especially if it’s loaded with butter. One of the best things about going to the movie theater is that you can justify (sort of) eating a ton of the yummy buttery stuff. Chef’s Shoppe in Edwardsville gives popcorn a whole new meaning with flavors that I never before associated with it — like bacon, s’mores, peanut butter chocolate, root beer and a whole lot more. We decided to mix and match a little, trying a few savory flavors — bacon and cheddar, extra buttery and extra cheesy — and just for fun, a sweet one — Oreo. They are all good, each in their own way. You can buy combination packs with a couple of flavors of popcorn and specialty Avery’s “sodas” to go along with it, or you can head up to the popcorn bar and mix and match your own idea of the perfect combination. The Avery’s Totally Gross Sodas are really something out of the ordinary, in glass bottles with fun names, like “Dog Drool” and “Kitty Piddle.” The Dog Drool is kind of a lemony-orange flavor, and while the Kitty Piddle is described as orange and pineapple — to me, it was somewhat reminiscent of Fresca, which I haven’t had for years and years. That was my mom’s favorite soft drink back in the day, and I used to sneak one from her stash every once in a while. Or you can try “Bug Barf,” “Alien Snot” or “Worm Ooze” you know, whatever sounds good. Chef’s Shoppe also has what I would call an old-fashioned fudge counter, and there are so many flavors, it is hard to choose. Luckily, they have what I believe is an ongoing deal — buy four and get two free — so you have the opportunity to try quite a few for a reasonable price. You can always go back later and get more of the one or two that you liked best. For our six-piece sampler pack, we included “Peanut Butter Chocolate,” “Cookies ‘n’ Cream,” “Butter Pecan,” “Raspberry Vanilla Swirl,” “Salted Nut Roll” and “Dark Chocolate Caramel Sea Salt” (my favorite). There are lots more flavors, too, like “Ooey Gooey (vanilla),” “Tiger Butter” (with vanilla and peanut butter) and “Turtle.” There are also bulk candy-counter-style candies that you can buy by the pound or the bag, and even salt water taffy in many different flavors. I forgot to mention that when you walk in the door, the air is filled with the smell of coffee, really rich coffee that would definitely be good to the last drop. Chef’s Shoppe grinds it fresh and sells it by the quarter-, half- and full pound. A halfdozen unflavored blends offer an array of strengths, and the flavored selections include goodies, like, “Caramel Kiss,” “Hazelnut Crème,” and “Golden Pecan,” among others. But Chef’s Shoppe has more than snacks and good drinks. The next thing that caught my eye was the sea salt collection. I love to add a good sea salt to vegetables, along with some cracked black pepper and throw them on the grill. I decided

There’s also a selection of gourmet prepared foods and mixes, jams and jelly, salsa, grilling sauces and rubs, bread dipping seasoning, and so many other choices, you really have to spend some time and peruse the shelves to figure out what is the most appealing. And don’t forget the kitchen products

that are in the store. You can find everything from nice sauce and sauté pans to steamers, kitchen gadgets, barware, knives, cutting boards and cute novelty items. Honestly, you have to take a look to fully realize what treasures you might find. Of course, at least for right now, masks are required and social distancing rules

Tom Brokaw says he’s retiring from NBC News after 55 years

By DAVID BAUDER AP Media Writer NEW YORK (AP) ‚Äî Longtime NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw, once television news’ most popular broadcaster as he told viewers about the biggest events of that late 20th Century, said Friday that he’s retiring from television. Brokaw, who is 80, said he’ll continue writing books and articles. He’s the author of “The Greatest Generation,” about those who fought World War II. In a final essay that appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Dec. 30, Brokaw hinted

at his announcement by reflecting on a career that took him from breaking into a local newscast in Nebraska and announcing the death of President John F. Kennedy, to coronavirus. “For me, it’s been an amazing journey ‚Äî 57 years as a reporter,” Brokaw said. Fifty-five of those years were at NBC News, starting as a reporter in Los Angeles in the 1960s, covering the White House during the Nixon administration, hosting the “Today” show in the late 1970s and more than 20 years as “Nightly News” anchor. For two decades, the triumvirate of Brokaw, ABC’s Peter Jennings and CBS’

Dan Rather were the nation’s most visible broadcasters, anchoring major stories like the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the disputed 2000 election and the fall of the Berlin Wall. After giving way at “Nightly News” to Brian Williams in 2004, Brokaw concentrated primarily on historical programming and commentary during big moments, like elections. For health reasons, his appearances have been more sporadic lately. In 2013, Brokaw was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer that affects the bone marrow. He did not return a message seeking comment on Friday.

During his final essay last month, Brokaw reviewed some of the events of 2020. He took a swipe at former President Donald Trump and his “bizarre refusal” to accept the election results. “Before too long, his principal audience will be his caddies,” he said. Brokaw said the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 400,000 Americans in the past year, was the country’s greatest test since the Civil War. “We still have miles to go and no assurances of just how it will all turn out,” he said.

NBC to shut down NBC Sports Network at end of 2021

By JOE REEDY AP Sports Writer The NBC Sports Network, which is best known for its coverage of the NHL and English Premier League, will be going away at the end of the year. NBC Sports Chairman Pete Bevacqua announced the channel’s shutdown on Friday in an internal memo to staff. “At the conclusion of 2021, we have decided that the best strategic next step for our Sports Group and the entire Company is to wind down NBCSN completely,” Bevacqua said in the memo. NBCSN is available in 80.1 million homes, according to Nielsen’s latest estimate, which is less than ESPN (83.1 million) and FS1 (80.2 million). The channel was launched by Comcast in 1995 as the Outdoor Life Network. It was best known for carrying the Tour de France until it acquired the NHL in 2005. It changed its name to Versus in 2006 and then to NBC Sports Network six years later after Comcast bought NBC Universal in 2011.

Bevacqua said in the memo that Stanley Cup playoff games and NASCAR races would be moving to USA Network this year. USA Network, which is available in 85.6 million homes, had already been airing early-round playoff games since 2012. “This will make USA Network an extraordinarily powerful platform in the media marketplace, and gives our sports programming a significant audience boost,” Bevacqua said. “We believe that the power of this offering is the best long-term strategy for our Sports Group, our partners, and our Company.” The news of NBCSN shutting down also comes during a time when many of NBC Sports Group’s most valuable sports properties are coming up for renewal. This is the last season of a 10-year deal with the NHL and negotiations for the EPL rights, beginning with the 2022-23 season, are ongoing. Many have predicted that the next rights deal with the NHL will include multiple networks with former broadcast partners ESPN and Fox Sports expected to be in the mix. NBC’s current deal averages $200 million per season. Premier League deals are usually for three years, but NBC secured a six-year package in 2015 by paying

nearly $1 billion. NASCAR, which has its races from July through November on NBC and NBCSN, has a deal through 2024. IndyCar’s contract, which includes the Indianapolis 500 on NBC, expires at the end of this year. The sanctioning body said in a statement that NBC “has always been a transparent partner, and we were aware of this upcoming strategy shift.” Tag Garson, Wasserman’s senior vice president of properties, said TNT and TBS have already proved it’s possible to have a cable channel that does a good job of meshing entertainment programming with sports. “NBC has done a great job with hockey and soccer that it would be hard for anyone to walk away from that,” he said. “How many windows can your fit sports programming into at USA? That’s where the internal discussions are going to be and understanding the right balance to have between sports and entertainment.” NBC could also put additional events on its Peacock streaming service, which debuted last year. There are 175 Premier League games airing on Peacock this season.

Review: ‘Tropic of Stupid’ continues slapstick-noir series

By BRUCE DeSILVA Associated Press “Tropic of Stupid,” by Tim Dorsey (William Morrow) “Tropic of Stupid,” the 24th novel in Tim Dorsey’s series featuring obsessive-compulsive psychopath Serge Storms, finds the anti-hero and his drugged out sidekick, Colman, zipping around their beloved Florida in a borrowed sports car. As usual, they’ve got a kidnap victim whimpering in the trunk. This time, Serge is obsessed with researching his family tree, binge-watching all 155 episodes of an old Lloyd Bridges TV show called “Sea Hunt,” and visiting every state park in the Sunshine State. Along the way, he rubs out a scam artist who’s been preying on the elderly, destroys the national ambitions of a crooked politician and discovers that he’s not the only active serial killer inhabiting his family tree. Although Serge is a prolific killer, his victims are always creeps you might stab, set on fire or feed to sharks yourself if you weren’t squeamish about that sort of thing. The other homicidal maniac in the family prefers innocent victims, so Serge sets out hunt him down. This puts Serge in a competition of sorts with a Florida Department of Law Enforcement agent working the same case. If this sounds all crazy to you, you’re right. Crazy is what Dorsey is all about. Like each of his previous novels, “Tropic of Stupid” is a wacky celebration of violence, depravity and the weirdness of Florida. Think the Three Stooges meet Ted Bundy. This one isn’t quite as funny as “Naked Came the Florida Man” (2020) or his tour de force, “The Big Bamboo” (2009), but it does have its moments, and it is told in Dorsey’s customary manic prose style. The book is apt to offend those who insist that drug use and murder are not fit subjects for humor, but it is sure to appeal to readers who think that Carl Hiaasen’s slapstick noir novels are too darned subtle. ___ Bruce DeSilva, winner of the Mystery Writers of America’s Edgar Award, is the author of the Mulligan crime novels including “The Dread Line.”

‘Wonder Woman 1984’ a movie for all to enjoy By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge EDWARDSVILLE — A former colleague and frequent reader stopped me at the entrance to the grocery store one morning, recently, stopped me cold in my tracks with a question that I grapple with on an almost

daily basis. “Is going to the movies ever going to be the same?” Simply put, I have no idea. The brave answer is that we know that it still matters. Billion dollar businesses are counting on us to come back. I want to be there, but am I rapidly becoming a minority interest? The realistic and short-term answer is that it probably will never be the same as it was

these last 20 years. I’m seeing an average of two to 12 other audience members sitting in the theater during my weekly moviewatching adventures during a pandemic. I’d go more often, but the product is simply not drawing even my own rabid interest right now. I loved “News of the World” and “Wonder Woman 1984” was worthwhile. The

siren song of Liam Neeson in “The Marksman” is calling my name just now. I’d even go see “Monster Hunter” if I have the time. Denzel Washington has a prestige picture opening this week. I’m slowly getting my wish of less movies but better quality movies. I think. The whole thing is really confusing and slightly frustrating. I miss matinees, espe-

cially the early ones where it’s still daylight when you leave the show. The magic is still there, even if you have to look a lot harder to see it. “Wonder Woman 1984” debuted in theaters on Christmas, at the same time it premiered with On Demand through HBO Max (which is an interesting business model, and one in which I don’t envy negotiations, as it surely was a war). “WW1984” previously was 2020’s most anticipated movie. I slow played my gravitational pull toward it, not because I was indifferent, but because I was cautiously unsure of what it was. The plot was completely hidden by the trailers and I had to prioritize my time with Tom Hanks the same week. It turned out to be decent, though still an inferior sequel to 2017’s girlpower blockbuster “Wonder Woman” movie. By moving the setting of “WW84” roughly

70 years into the future, we can appreciate the timeless Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) all the more. Having suffered the loss of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) during the climactic conclusion of the first film, this led to a lifetime of loneliness for our heroine. Being set 40 years into our current past, though, allows the plot gimmick of this movie to thrive. “WW84” is basically a super-powered retelling of the legend of “The Monkey’s Paw,” a supernatural short story by W. W. Jacobs, first published in 1902. This would be easily thwarted by internet technology today. The parable of being careful about what you wish for is even more emphasized for us by Trevor who returns in a clever guise because of Diana’s innocent wish early in the movie. Together they team up to stop Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal), an oil prospec-

tor who possesses the Dreamstone, a gem that grants wishes to anyone who touches it. Those wishes all come with a cost and a literal translation that soon has the world in tatters and in need of Wonder Woman to sort it all out. And this is a where “WW84” defies expectations. For most of the middle hour, Diana skips using her powers or showing us her starspangled bustier. It’s absolutely not what paying audience come to see, but I would argue that it’s the most interesting part of the picture. A superhero movie that builds its narrative through storytelling and character development and not explosions? That is a novel prospect to be reckoned with! This also is the part of the movie when we’re introduced to Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig), Diana’s

clumsy, goofy co-worker at the Smithsonian. Discovering the Dreamstone and wanting to be more like her glamorous friend, Barbara transitions from mousy second banana to hottie co-villain. Wiig’s comedy roots and sexy smirk make this a casting coup. She later progresses into lore by becoming The Cheetah, a character from the Wonder Woman comics. The feminist agenda that made the original movie so great is lacking in its follow-up, but that’s more or less OK. This is a movie for everyone to enjoy. ”Wonder Woman 1984” runs 151 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of action and violence. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.

With new album, Epik High endures in South Korea music scene By JUWON PARK Associated Press SEOUL (AP) ‚Äî Popular South Korean hip-hop trio Epik High was working on a song called “End of the World” before the pandemic hit last year. Now, the band’s frontman Tablo says, “I wish that this song is not relevant.” His group had 2020 all planned out, from a Coachella performance to a world tour. Then early last year, Tablo said he and bandmates Mithra Jin and DJ Tukutz saw their plans “completely becoming dust.” With the world sharing their feelings of “fear, confusion and trepidation,” the group stayed home to document the moment in songs, crafting a new double album called “Epik High Is Here.” The just-released first half is a collection of 10 songs featuring a diverse roster of artists including K-pop heavyweight CL, rising rapper Woo and Kim Sawol, the South Korean folk and rock singer-songwriter. Tablo said one of his favorite songs in the album is “Rosario,” one of two lead tracks, which reflects duality in his inner world - and perhaps this moment in the pandemic. “I have some demons that I can’t shake off,” he said. “But at the same time, I’m very optimistic.” He said the trio had given lots of thought to the flow of the album, balancing it with a mix of “dark and very hard-hitting” songs and those that give “a moment to breathe.” The ups and downs reflect the band’s career. Epik High has had an unusually long career spanning almost two decades in a competitive South Korean entertainment scene. They didn’t gain fame immediately upon their official debut in 2003, but soon the trio uprooted South Korea’s nascent hip-hop scene. Their music was different, with an experimental mix of genres, poetic lyrics skillfully weaving English and Korean, punchlines abounding with homonyms, and dense rhymes. The band has a knack for making songs about touchy subjects in South Korea, from its whitecollar work culture, overly competitive educational system to religion - highlighted on their “ Lesson “ series. By 2010, the trio had topped domestic music charts and received multiple accolades. Tablo married well-known actress Kang Hye-jung and was expecting a baby. Then, his career came to a halt with the spread of online rumors that he’d lied about graduating from Stanford. At the time, South Korea was reeling from fake diplomas scandals involving government officials and celebrities. As rumors started making headlines, more than 200,000 people signed up for an online group titled “TaJinYo,” a Korean acronym for “We Request the Truth from Tablo.” South Koreans started flooding the inboxes of Stanford professors asking if Tablo had really graduated. He had. Tablo said his family started getting death threats. Strangers knocked on the family home and work places. In the street, he was recognized and insulted. Even close friends turned their backs. To clear his name, he returned to his alma mater with a camera crew in tow as he toured the school and revisited professors and friends. It was a turning point that finally cleared his name. Tablo describes the three years of online and offline harassments and lawsuits as “the lowest point” in his career. His father, whose health had deteriorated from the stress of the scandal, died in 2012. “The problem is ‚Ķ I lost someone that is irreplaceable,” he said. “I lost my dad ‚Ķ as a direct result of what people did ‚Ķ for no reason.” Tablo says he’s still haunted by the scandal. “It’s been a long time, yes, but it’s not something that I can ever be OK with and that will affect everything I do,” he said. “There is a hole that can’t be filled.” Despite bittersweet lyrics, Tablo said the name of the new album - “Epik High is Here” represents his wishes to live in the present. “Maybe the map we drew all those years ago was merely meant to show us the vastness of this world, and just how many of us are lost - together - in it,” Tablo wrote on the first page of the new album package. “Whatever the case, this is our current location.” “Epik High is Here” is available now.

Pompeii’s museum comes back to life to display amazing finds

ANDREA ROSA POMPEII, Italy (AP) ‚Äî Decades after suffering bombing and earthquake damage, Pompeii’s museum has been reborn, showing off exquisite finds from excavations of the ancient Roman city. Officials of the archeological park of the ruins of the city destroyed in 79 A.D. by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius inaugurated the museum on Monday. Known as the Antiquarium, the museum gives Pompeii a permanent exhibition space. Visitors can see sections of frescoed walls from the sprawling city’s unearthed villas, examples of some of the graffiti unearthed by archaeologists as well as household objects ranging from silver spoons to a bronze food-warmer, items of the everyday life that was snuffed out by the volcanic explosion. First opened in about 1873, the Antiquarium was damaged by bombing during World War II and again in 1980, when a deadly earthquake rocked the Naples area. Since the quake, the museum had been closed, although it was reopened in 2016 as a space for temporary exhibitions. The Antiquarium’s displays also document Pompeii’s history as a settlement several centuries before it became a flourishing Roman city. Due to Italy’s COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions, currently only visitors from Italy’s Campania region, which includes the Naples area and the Pompeii ruins, can see the museum.

Pompeii is one of Italy’s top tourist attractions, and when mass tourism eventually resumes, entrance tickets to the ruins will also include a visit to the Antiquarium. The re-opening of the museum after so many decades of travail is “a sign of great hope during a very difficult moment,” Pompeii’s long time director, Massimo Osanna, said. He was referring to the harsh blow that the pandemic’s travel restrictions have dealt to tourism, one of Italy’s biggest revenue sources. On display in the last room of the museum are poignant casts made from the remains of some of Pompeii’s residents who tried to flee but were overcome by blasts of volcanic gases or battered by a rain of lava stones ejected by Vesuvius. “I find particularly touching the last room, the one dedicated to the eruption, and where

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, January 28, 2021 • 25 on display are the objects deformed by the heat of the eruption, the casts of the victims, the casts of the animals,” Osanna said. “Really, one touches with one’s hand the incredible drama that the 79 A.D. eruption was.” Large swaths of Pompeii remain to be excavated. While tourism virtually ground to a halt during the pandemic, archaeologists have kept working. Just a month ago, Osanna revealed the discovery of an ancient fast-food eatery at Pompeii. Completely excavated, the find helped to reveal dishes popular with the citizens of the ancient city who apparently were partial to eating out, including what was on the menu the day that Pompeii was destroyed. ‚ÄîD’Emilio reported from Rome.

New milestone for Sidney Poitier: Namesake of a film school

By JOCELYN NOVECK AP National Writer

NEW YORK (AP) ‚Äî In 1963, Sidney Poitier made a film in Arizona, “Lilies of the Field.” The performance led to a huge milestone: He became the first Black winner of a lead-acting Oscar. Now, Arizona is the site of another milestone for the legendary actor and filmmaker. Arizona State University has named its new film school after him. It was to unveil The Sidney Poitier New American Film School at a ceremony on Monday. The decision to name the school after Poitier, 93, is about much more than an emphasis on diversity, said Michael M. Crow, president of the university, in an interview ahead of the unveiling. “You’re looking for an icon, a person that embodies everything you stand for,” Crow said. “With Sidney Poitier, it’s his creative energy, his dynamism, his drive, his ambition, the kinds of projects he worked on, the ways in which he advanced his life.” “Look at his life: It’s a story of a person who found a way,” he said of the actor, who was born in Miami and raised in the Bahamas, the son of tomato farmers, before launching a career that went from small, hardwon theater parts to eventual Hollywood stardom. “How do we help other young people find their way?” The university, which is expanding its existing film program into its own school, says it has invested millions of dollars in technology to create what’s intended to be one of the largest, most accessible and most diverse film schools. Crow said that much like the broader university, the film school will measure success not by exclusivity but by inclusivity. By expanding both its physical resources and flexible learning options like online study, it hopes to enroll thousands more students, teaching them skills that go far beyond traditional moviemaking. The school will move in the fall of 2022 to a new facility in downtown Mesa, Arizona, 7 miles from the university’s Tempe Campus. It will also occupy the university’s new center in Los Angeles. The university did not make Poitier, who has been out of the public eye for some time, available for an interview. His daughter Beverly Poitier-Henderson told The Associated Press her father was “doing well and enjoying his family,” and considered it an honor to be the namesake of the new film school. Poitier-Henderson and two of Poitier ’s other daughters described in interviews how the film school’s emphasis on inclusivity and access aligned with their father’s long-held ideals. “If it has my Dad’s name on it, it has to be inclusive, because that’s the foundation of who he is and what he stands for,” said Anika Poitier, like her father a filmmaker. “And it’s important to not only have inclusion but to have diversity, and to give people the opportunity to tell their stories. I think it’s imperative to cast a wide net and allow anyone who’s called to tell their story to learn how to do that.”

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, January 28, 2021 • 27 Sydney Poitier Heartsong, the actor’s youngest daughter, noted that the two most important things to her father as she grew up were education and the arts. “Those are the two tracks that run throughout his life, that define what he has contributed and defined what he felt was important to impart to his kids. .... the arts were also a form of education. He wanted to pass that on to all young people but specifically young people of color.”

Poitier Heartsong added that the new school had special resonance in a time when “we’ve come to recognize that from a socioeconomic standpoint, a lot of (elite) schools exclude people of color disproportionately -- and people without the means to go to them. That is the antithesis of what my father would want to be a part of.” In his heyday, when he won his Oscar, one of her father’s biggest complaints, she

said, was that “he was the only one up there, and he wanted others to be up there with him.” The ASU film production programs now enroll 700 students, said Steven Tepper, dean of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts there, but that number is expected to double over three to five years. “I just hope that the students at the Sidney Poitier Film School take up the mantle of responsibility the way our father

took up the mantle when he was coming up in his career,” said Poitier-Henderson, “and tell their stories regardless of finances, which is easy for us to say. But you’ve got to be true to yourself. It’s a very powerful thing, and I’m looking forward to seeing who comes out of it. I’m not looking for the next Sidney Poitier, but I’m looking for the next person who is true to themself.”

Dustin Diamond undergoing chemotherapy treatments for cancer The Associated Press Original “Saved by the Bell” star Dustin Diamond has begun undergoing chemotherapy treatments after being diagnosed with cancer, according to his representative. Diamond, best known for playing Screech on the hit ‘90s sitcom, was hospitalized earlier this month in Florida. Last week, his team disclosed he had cancer. “Dustin has completed his first round of chemo and his next round is being scheduled. He will also begin his physical therapy soon,” the actor’s spokesman, Roger Paul, said in a statement. “Dustin is looking forward to spending more time with his girlfriend, playing his bass guitar/video games, as well as making videos for his fans on social media,” Paul added.

“Saved by the Bell” aired from 1989 to 1993, and its spinoffs included “Saved by the Bell: The College Years” and “Saved by the Bell: The New Class,” both of which Diamond starred in. A sequel was launched on Peacock this fall featuring many from the original cast, including Elizabeth Berkley, Mario Lopez, Tiffani Thiessen and Mark-Paul Gosselaar. Diamond was not included. Diamond has been sued several times for delinquent taxes and in foreclosure proceedings for missing mortgage payments. He has appeared on reality TV shows, made a sex tape and produced a tell-all documentary on Lifetime TV called “The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story.” In 2015, he was sentenced to serve 4 months in jail for his part in a Wisconsin barroom stabbing.
