Edwardsville couple bring clients into family fold

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — Organically capturing milestones, special moments and festive occasions are what Shea and Melissa Lovell pride themselves on as hometown-rooted photographers. Edwardsville artist Steve Hartman inspired Shea Lovell to pursue photography, for which Lovell earned a degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 2008. But Lovell started Capture Photography two years before that. “Steve’s the one who got me into photography,” said Lovell, originally from Columbia, Illinois, in Monroe County, east of Edwardsville, who, along with his wife, owns and operates Edwardsville-based Capture Photography. “He’d have prints floating in his bathtub,” Lovell recalled. “I was fascinated.” Thus, Capture Photography truly is rooted in Edwardsville, like Hartman, an accomplished oil-on-canvas artist, born and raised here. Lovell’s sister, Sharolyn Hartman, of Edwardsville, an Alton school district reading teacher, married to Hartman’s brother, Larry, also encouraged Lovell to follow his passion. “Sharolyn encouraged me to start this business and has truly made it what it is today,” said Lovell, whose sister also is a co-owner

of Capture Photography and takes care of its financial operations. “Our business is truly family oriented and operated,” he said. “My family is a big help for me. My sister, Stacey Tieman, shot with me the first few years. The family is the base of the business — we couldn’t do this without them.” Tieman lived here for years and now lives in Rochester, Illinois, in Sangamon County, with her husband, Derek Tieman. The Capture Photography family also includes the Lovells’ daughters, Evertin, 2, and Truitt, 4; Shea’s parents, Sharon Lovell, who lends a big hand with Capture Photography’s mailings, and Mike Lovell, a huge influence in his son’s life; the couple’s nephews, Tanner and Max Hartman, and Dalton Tieman, and niece, Dharby Tieman, all of whom assist with the business, as does the couple’s 8-month-old puppy, Hayes, as a model. “Our girls are our number one models,” Shea said. “When we want to try something new, we’re, like, ‘OK girls, let’s do this.’ The Lovells operate Capture Photography from their historic 1860-built home, bordered by cobblestones, situated in one of Edwardsville’s charming cul-de-sacs. Melissa Lovell also works part time as an art teacher in Mascoutah at Wingate Elementary, teaching kindergarten

through fifth grade. But, she’s firmly immersed in the family business. She shoots and her eye for art enhances Capture Photography’s work. She started working in the business about 11 years ago, in 2009, the year she met Shea, and earned a degree in art education from SIUE in 2014. “Honestly, it’s just experience, learning and working with others,” her husband said about the expertise of professional photographers. “We shoot a lot of the same families year after year.” Capture Photography books mainly on location, traveling to clients and utilizing Lovell’s parents’ Columbia property and studio. The landscape includes a waterfall, bridge, and various backgrounds created by Lovell. Capture Photography’s first job was a paid shoot for a newborn. “She’s 15 now!” Lovell exclaimed. “We shoot her, and her brother, right on her birthday, every year. “We’ve captured events for the same clients year after year, from their senior pictures to their weddings to their newborns.” “It’s really cool to see that cycle of life,” noted Melissa, an “Air Force brat,” whose parents are Shari and Jim Hurlahe, of Mascoutah, where they moved by way of Texas and Georgia. The couple absolutely loves to photograph weddings, they both agreed. “That’s our favorite,” Shea said. “It’s like we become a part of the family, hugging moms and dads at receptions.” Their biggest advice for newlyweds — find a photographer with whom you connect. Shorter official title does little to help ‘Birds of Prey’

After being shut in with a bug for the last three weeks, when I was lucky enough to gorge myself on many of the Academy Award-nominated films (“Parasite” for Best Picture!), I found myself desperately in need of a dose of something new. With “Oscar Quest 2019” dramatically unfulfilled (I saw only 43 of the 53 recognized titles — and all but one eventual winner), the prescription for me was the biggest, loudest, bloodiest movie you can find in release right now, just don’t ask me to help you with the title. We’re going to keep it simple by referring to it as “Birds of Prey,” the opening clause of the official 11-word title. After a substandard box office performance, an interesting think piece in Variety, the writer now suspects that the revised title, “Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey,” is something Warner Bros. is throwing against the wall, trying get a few more dollars for the floundering DC Extended Universe franchise, now in its first few weekends. They won’t.

“Birds of Prey” is a spin-off, of sorts, from 2016’s “Suicide Squad” and focuses squarely on Margot Robbie’s breakout character, Harley Quinn. You can’t really blame anyone for trying this recipe out. Robbie is a fantastic actress, just last week coming off of her third Oscar nomination before age 30. Quinn is the life of that movie, too. In “Birds of Prey,” she’s on the rebound after a bad breakup with the Joker. She does everything a comical villainess can do to get her groove back. She cuts her hair, sure, but she also buys a pet hyena. After she blows up a chemical factory, a favorite spot she shared with Joker, new characters are introduced. First comes Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), a Gotham detective on the outs with her under-performing department. Montoya wants to take down all the city’s criminals, but she has to go outside of the system to do it. This is not Jim Gordon’s GCPD. Through unremarkable circumstances, Quinn takes possession of a pickpocket child (Ella Jay Basco), who stole a valuable diamond from the new kingpin in town (Ewan McGregor) who suddenly wants to kill everyone around him. This includes the headlining chanteuse of his nightclub, Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), a diva who sulks quietly, until her high note takes down a room, literally and metaphori-

cally. While these broken characters fight each other and waste screen time, a side plot develops for the crossbow-wielding Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), showing up and giving another, equally formulaic, reason why she wants the diamond. The quartet of female leads are the titular birds of prey, but I wouldn’t hold out for much of a sequel. A short, muddled running time heaps together all the typical bad versus badder into a battle royale at “Birds of Prey’s” climactic ending. It is possibly the only scene that’s halfway entertaining. There’s even a cute little aside, in which Quinn offers Canary a hair tie during the fisticuffs. The strong feminist message is striking chords with the online community for how women will only get ahead by helping other women. But it comes off very ham-fisted and forced. I’m sorry to say that I didn’t fall for any of the tricks in this flick. ”Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn” runs 109 minutes and is rated R for strong violence and language throughout, and some sexual and drug material. I give this film one star out of four.

Baby, it’s cold outside! By Vicki Bennington For The Edge

Frozen treats sometimes get a bad rap in the winter. In fact, some custard and ice cream shops are only open during the summer months. I don’t know about everyone else, but I like to eat frozen custard and ice cream all year round. I must not be the only one that feels way - come to think of it - because the crowd at Annie’s in Glen Carbon, on a chilly February trip to pick up dessert, proved that frozen treats are not just for warm weather. I actually read somewhere that ingesting something that is closer to the outside temperature can balance your body Vicki temperature better, meaning Bennington that when it’s cold, eat frozen treats to feel warmer; when it’s hot, drink warm milk or tea to feel cooler. That’s not what we were all taught to believe, and I’m not sure it’s true. But either way, I’m not saving Annie’s for summer. Custard is not quite the same as ice cream. The ingredients are a little bit different – like eggs and real cream that give custard a softer creamier consistency. There are a few other adjustments in

the production process of custard, and Annie’s makes its creamy treat in-house, every hour on the hour, so you know it’s fresh. My tortoise mini pie was made of vanilla custard, topped with lines of hot fudge, rimmed with whipped cream and topped with yummy pecans. The pies also come in other flavors, like dirt ‘n’ worms, cookie dough, give-em s’mores, Mississippi mud and Goldie. Pick your favorite flavor and buy a 9-inch pie to take home and serve to the whole family. Frozen cakes or quarts of frozen custard are available to take home, too. My husband’s concrete – the chocolate lover’s delight - was chocolaty, to say the least, with chocolate custard, brownie bites and chocolate syrup. You really have to eat a concrete with a spoon, which is what he likes. This particular flavor, he couldn’t finish in one sitting because it was a lot of chocolate. He liked it, but he just had to space it out a little. Other flavors include “Emerald Chip,” with mint and a hard shell, “German Chocolate,” with chocolate custard, caramel, pecans and coconut, “Hawaiian Tropic,” with pineapple, bananas and macadamia nuts, “Hot Cocoa,” “Raspberry Truffle,” “Rice Krispie Treat,” and many more. If I would have chosen something that comes in a cup, rather than the pie, I prefer the shake route, so I can sip it through a straw. Shakes and malts are both served, as well as smoothies and

sundaes, with dozens of toppings to choose from. And cones, don’t forget the cones that are even easier to eat than shakes because they come in their own edible holder. The concept is genius. If you are not in the mood for custard, or maybe you want to eat a little something else first, don’t cross Annie’s off the list. There’s hot dogs and chili! The Carolina BBQ slaw dog (mustard BBQ sauce, chili coleslaw, Memphis BBQ sauce and onion straws), the Chicago dog (neon relish, tomatoes, onions, peppers, pickles and mustard), the dachshund (spicy mustard and a blanket of sauerkraut), or the pooch (plain, nothing but dog) or a bowl of chili can hit the spot and set the scene for a custard dessert.
