Edwardsville resident tackles complex challenges in new book

By Scott Marion smarion@hearst.com

EDWARDSVILLE — Being a parent or a teacher is tough enough under any circumstances, but a new book by an Edwardsville resident discusses the issues that make it even tougher in 2021. “Making It: What Today’s Kids Need for Tomorrow’s World” is the first book by Stephanie Malia Krauss and will hit bookshelves and mailboxes on March 3. The book tackles COVID, the economic crisis, racial uprisings, and the many other complex challenges we have all been experiencing, paying special attention to what it means for our kids and their futures. “I’m pleased that as a working mom I managed to finish a book during a pandemic,” Krauss said. “This will be one of the first books to come out on the market that talks about COVID. It’s deeply researched, but it’s also personal because I’m an educator and worried about my kids. “I’ve had the opportunity to write for other outlets, but this is my first long-form book. I hope it won’t be my last and I have plans for what book comes next.” Krauss and her husband, Evan, are both from New Jersey and met at Washington University in St. Louis while in graduate school. Along with their two sons, ages 7 and 10, they have lived in Edwardsville for six years. Krauss, who has a background in education and social work, serves as a senior advisor to Jobs for the Future and is a staff consultant to the Youth Transition Funders Group. Evan, meanwhile, facilitates East Side Aligned, which is a collective impact effort in East St. Louis.

“I never would have expected becoming a Midwesterner and raising my kids here, but we met and married in St. Louis, worked in the city and made this home,” Krauss said. Eight years ago, Krauss left working on the frontlines of education because she was worried that earning a diploma was not the same thing as being ready for college, work and life. Her book explores what her research and work since then have shown to be “the four currencies today’s kids need to make it in tomorrow’s world: competencies, connections, credentials, and cash.” A former elementary school teacher in Phoenix, Arizona, Krauss also had the opportunity during the summers to provide professional development to teachers in East Africa. “At the time, the AIDS epidemic was raging in the area of East Africa where I was, so a lot of the professionally trained teachers were either sick or taking care of family members who were sick,” Krauss said. “There was a wave of university students who were taking leaves to go home to teach in the rural communities where they had grown up. During the school year, I taught a mostly urban and migrant population, and then I would go to East Africa and see a different set of challenges for teachers and students.” The overall experience left a lasting impression on Krauss and made her question many aspects of traditional education. “The combination of my experience in the classroom in Arizona and what I was seeing internationally made it clear that there were so many other life factors that went

6 • Thursday, February 25, 2021 • On the Edge of the Weekend into what was happening in kids’ lives and educational experience,” Krauss said. “While I loved teaching, I was conflicted about that reality.” For three years starting in 2010, Krauss ran Shearwater Education Foundation, a non-

profit that operated a high school for students who had dropped out, giving them a second chance at a diploma. The school was located on the campus of Ranken Technical College in St. Louis. In May of 2013, Krauss announced the

closure of the school at the end of the school year. “We were the only high school in the history of Missouri to electively close ourselves,” Krauss said. “The number of cumbersome compliance and content requirements on

what it meant to be a Missouri public high school was in conflict with what we knew our students needed.” After Shearwater closed, Krauss had a toddler and a baby and was considering a career change.

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, February 25, 2021 • 7 That’s when she made a connection that set her on the path to writing a book. “At that time, a national organization located in Washington, D.C., reached out and asked me if graduating from high school wasn’t fully preparing kids for life, then what does readiness require? They had been working to answer this question for years,” Krauss said. “I decided to join their team, which started my national work, research and writing. Eight years later, this is my love letter back to the frontlines, for educators, counselors, youth workers, administrators and parents. “Working nationally has given me the chance to work with everyone from governors to the White House to many national organizations and networks. I have been privy to so much information about what is happening with kids and what is happening in the world. I wanted to give that back to those who are still running schools, teaching in classrooms and raising kids.” The book discusses how today’s kids are growing up during a time of rapid change, and how different things could look by the time they reach adulthood. “One of the things I talk about in the book is that this year’s high school graduating class is living through COVID and they started school in the middle of the Great Recession. Their entire K-12 experience is bookended by major crises,” Krauss said. “This is a recession-resilient generation who want stability. In the absence of economic stability, which we can’t promise them, we have to be able to offer them social stability.” “Making It: What Today’s Kids Need for Tomorrow’s World” will be available locally at Afterwords Books, Seams for the Soul Boutique, and Books-A-Million. Krauss plans to sign any books that are delivered to local stores. It is also available at bookshop. org, Amazon and Barnes & Noble. An audiobook version will be available on March 9, for Audible and other platforms. For more information about Krauss and her book, go to https://www.stephaniemaliakrauss.com/ or @stephanie_ malia on Twitter.

African-American Museum marks Black History Month

By Vicki Bennington For The Edge SPRINGFIELD — What started with a project to record the history and contributions of African-Americans in the Springfield community, soon grew into The Springfield and Central Illinois African American History Museum. Due to the Oral History Project’s success, the museum was founded in 2012 by Doug King and Barbara “Babs” Dickerman on Washington Street in Springfield. Since then, the museum has grown and moved to 1440 Monument Ave. And though the physical building is closed right now, due to COVID-19, it is still sponsoring or offering information in celebration of Black History Month in a virtual

format, while also collaborating with other entities providing additional online content. You can even take a virtual tour of the museum itself at www.spiaahm. org, and through a series of online videos produced by Krista Burris and the AARP, you will be taken through various exhibits that hopefully, will one day soon be available to see in person again. Exhibits discussed in the series include those on The Middle Passage, one on President Barack Obama, Early African-American Pioneers of Central Illinois, African-American Firsts, African-American Women on Stamps and The Freedom Project. The Middle Passage display features figures designed by Alice Boy-

Pioneer Families of Central Illinois highlights African-Americans families who have made a positive difference in the community, said Kevia Maloney, coordinator at the museum. For example, regarding the Hubbard family display (information provided by Lee Hubbard and Myra Weir, written by Mary Helen Yokem): Lyman R. and Helen Locke Hubbard had two sons, Lyman L. Hubbard and Donald J. Hubbard. Lyman L. married Eartha Mary Baron.

A native of Springfield, he was an outstanding athlete and student at Feitshans High School. He was also a graduate of the Tuskegee Class 45-H, trained to fly B-25 bombers, and became a part of the famous Red Tails squadron during World War II. He died in 2012, at the age of 85. A memorial was established in 2016 at the Springfield Abraham Lincoln Airport in his honor. Other people highlighted in the Pioneer Families exhibit include Patricia Harris, originally from Mattoon, who was co-chair of the National Women’s Committee for Human Rights under President John F. Kennedy. Katherine Dunham of Chicago, and later, East

St. Louis, was known for dance, teaching and choreography, creating the “Dunham Technique” of dance, and was involved in social activism. Dr. Percy Lavon Julian lived in Waukegan, Illinois, and was a top organic chemist and research scientist. The museum also recently sponsored a special living history podcast presentation of “Driving the Green Book,” which is still available on the website. In the summer of 2019, award-winning broadcaster and educator Alvin Hall and activist Janée Woods Weber hit the road for a trip from Detroit to New Orleans. The route they drove was based on information from the historic travel guide, “The Negro

Motorist Green Book.” The stories from this trip turned into the “Driving the Green Book” podcast. Not physically far away, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum has more than 20 African-American oral histories available, now online. The Springfield African American History Foundation continues to gather oral histories from African-American families who have lived in the Springfield area. They are also interested in any inspiring historical information about local African-Americans. Interview tapes depicting these oral histories are stored currently in the Special Collections Department of the Abraham Lincoln

Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington

Baby, It’s cold outside!

It may sound cliché, but there is nothing like a big bowl of chili when it’s cold outside. Picture it: a Sunday afternoon, you look through the big picture window and see the trees covered in snow, which is still drifting down in huge, fluffy flakes. You snuggle up on the couch with your significant other, your friend or whoever you like to settle in with. Grab a warm throw and tune V i c k i into your favorite TV series Bennington of the moment (or maybe pick up your latest novel), and your mind begins to wander as to what you could cook that would make the day even more perfect. Truthfully, it was a little earlier than afternoon when I came up with the bright idea of chili in the Crockpot. The bonus is that the smell drifts through the house all day and adds to the cozy, comfortable feeling.

Cornbread

Thankfully, the temperatures have rebounded a little – I hope it lasts, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still make a tasty chili. And make sure you make a lot so it lasts at least a couple of days. There’s nothing like knowing your dinner is already cooked on the second day. Just dump what you need in a stovetop pan and heat it up, and away you go. A lot of times, on the second night of chili or homemade vegetable soup, or something similar, I might make a different kind of bread, add a side salad, serve it with oyster crackers or tortilla chips (which is actually really good), bake some hot dogs to make chili dogs – or whatever. This particular “first” day, I made cornbread, which is always a good comfort food on its own. You can use your favorite recipe for that or one of the boxed mixes you can pick up at the grocery store. Or in case you saved it, I shared a great cornbread recipe earlier this year – as a good luck food for the New Year!

For the chili recipe, try your own variations of this recipe to spice it up (or down) as you or your crew would prefer. But be prepared, it’s going to be a hit. CROCKPOT CHILI I have an extra-large Crockpot, so if you are using a smaller one, you may want to reduce the meat and tomato sauce quantity by one (each). 3 pounds ground beef, browned 3 large cans diced tomatoes with green chilies 3 large cans tomato sauce 2 large cans Rotel diced tomatoes and chilies 2 1/2 tablespoons chili powder 2 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin 3 teaspoons paprika 1 teaspoon ground cilantro 2 large cans kidney beans, drained

Crockpot chili

1 large can pinto beans 3 cloves garlic, chopped Sea salt and coarse black pepper, to taste Brown ground beef in a skillet, drain. Pour all ingredients, except beans, but including drained ground beef, into Crockpot. Begin cooking on high heat for the first two to three hours. Add beans and cook on low for about two hours longer. Serve with chosen sides and toppings. I set up a “chili” bar with sour cream, chopped onions, black olives and shredded cheese for individualized finishing touches. You can always put tortilla chips, oyster crackers and Saltines on the bar to add to the personal selections, too. In this column, Bennington shares her love of food and all that involves, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants to new trends and fads, and things to try at home. Grammy-winning duo Daft Punk break up after 28 years

By MESFIN FEKADU AP Music Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — Grammy-winning electronic music pioneers Daft Punk have announced that they are breaking up after 28 years. The helmet-wearing French duo shared the news Monday in an 8-minute video called “Epilogue.” Kathryn Frazier, the band’s longtime publicist, confirmed the break up for The Associated Press. Daft Punk, comprised of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de HomemChristo, have had major success over the years, winning six Grammy Awards and launching international hits with “One More Time,” “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” and “Get Lucky.” Bangalter and de Homem-Christo met at a Paris school in 1987. Prior to Daft Punk, they formed an indie rock band named Darling. They officially formed Daft Punk in 1993, and the helmeted, mute and mysterious musicians released their debut album, “Homework,” 1997. They first found success with the international hit “Da Funk,” which topped the Billboard dance charts and earned them their first Grammy nomination. A second No. 1 hit and Grammy nomination followed with “Around the World.” Daft Punk spent time touring around the world and reached greater heights with their sophomore album, 2001’s “Discovery.” It included the infectious smash “One More Time” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,” which Kanye West famously flipped into his own hit “Stronger,” released in 2007. It won West the best rap solo performance Grammy at the 2008 show, where West and Daft Punk performed together onstage. A year later, a live version of “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” won Daft Punk the best dance recording Grammy ‚Äî their

electronic act to win the highest honor at the Grammys. The duo won four awards that night, including record of the year for their bombshell hit “Get Lucky,” featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. “Random Access Memories” was regard-

ed as a genre-bending album highlighted by its mix of live instrumentation, disco sounds, funk, rock, R&B and more. Rolling Stone ranked it No. 295 on their list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” last year.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Illinois seeking to recruit male volunteer mentors

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com ALTON — Big Brothers Big Sisters of America’s independent affiliate is right here to help all the “Littles” in Madison County, and the organization is looking for volunteers, especially male “Bigs” willing and able to dedicate just four hours a month to a Little who’s on its waiting list. Becoming a Big isn’t as complicated as you think. If you can

spend time with a child and to do things you are already doing, like, cooking, watching movies and chatting on the phone, you are halfway there. Inspiring the future of a child is not as daunting of a task as you might think. To accommodate today’s world, there is also virtual mentoring as an option. Dozens of Little Brothers in Southwestern Illinois are waiting to be matched with a Big Brother, and the only way to ensure they have someone in their corner to help

them to reach their full potential is for more adults to step up and volunteer to become Bigs. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Illinois President Heather Freed, also chief executive officer and an Alton native and licensed counselor of social work, has taken on a mission of her own since taking the helm two years ago at the Belleville-based brick-and-mortar regional office of Big Brothers Big Sisters, located in St. Clair County. The office covers St. Clair, Madison,

Clinton and Monroe counties, but a shortage of male volunteers exists in St. Clair and Madison counties, particularly in Alton and Granite City. “I’ve made it sort of my mission to elevate what we’re doing in Madison County,” said Freed, whose father, Otis Steward, retired as an Alton police chief in 2018; her uncle, Frank Steward, also retired from the Alton Police Department. “Our brick-and-mortar office is in Belleville, and feel since we don’t

Big Brother Austin and Little Brother Peyton stand before locks and dam in Madison County during an outing. All that’s required by those approved to be “Bigs” for “Littles” is a commitment of four hours a month to a young person. Those hours can be split into different interactions or one outing or experience. All Big Brothers/Big Sisters are coordinated with a Little who lives within a 20 to 25 minute commute of each other. (Courtesy of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Illinois|For The Edge)

have a physical office in Madison County, we need to let the community know that we are working in Madison County. “We do all our own fundraising and have our own board of directors,” said Freed, whose whole family still lives in Alton. “We run our own office and affiliate, completely supported by those in our community of four counties. The Alton Woman’s Home Association and Simmons law firm, and a lot of businesses in Alton support us, as well.” There are 250 affiliate offices of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America offices around the country. “Our goal for the year is to bring on approximately 54 new Bigs, with the vast majority looking to be men because most of the Littles on the wait list are boys,” Freed explained. The Southwestern Illinois office started its recruitment campaign in January. “We had a decent number of people come through, but it’s interesting because a lot of the men fell off,” she said. “I don’t know if they find out more and don’t tend to complete the process, but I think there are misconceptions associated with the fall off.” Freed wants to share some of the misconceptions, which she believes is mostly about time commitment and a feeling that volunteers think they must be “perfect.” All volunteers — male and female — go through a thorough interview and screening process, including a background check, all of which can be done electronically. But Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Illinois has the green light for volunteers to meet with their Littles in person, though virtual meetings or a combination thereof are completely acceptable, as well. “It really boils down to do you have four hours a month to spend time with a child, and we ask that you commit for one year,” she said. “We want to provide consistency for these children. “Another misconception, I think, is you have to be this perfect person, like, the leader of your church, or involved in 10 civic groups, but

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, February 25, 2021 • 15 the reality is you just need to be a consistent friend, who’s other than a parent or grandparent, so they can talk about what’s going on their lives outside of their homes. Men and women, and I think men in particular, tend to thing they need to be ‘superheroes,’ but just be consistent and willing to commit.” Big Brothers Big Sisters takes a significant amount of time to make sure volunteers have common interests with their mentees. And the organization places Littles and Bigs together who live within 20 to 25 minutes of each others homes in order to cut down on commute time. “We are looking for more volume of men coming in to anticipate the volume with the retention rate,” Freed said. “We’re following closely what’s going on in our area, and hopefully the worst is over, as long as people are wearing masks, and social distancing, we’re OK with outings.” Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Illinois is an affiliate of the oldest, most respected mentoring organization in the U.S. The organization is a mission-driven, performance-based organization that is professionally managed and provides high quality and safe one-on-one mentoring serving the most at-risk children and their families. Donations pour in to rebuild Newman’s camp for sick kids

By PAT EATON-ROBB Associated Press

Less than a week after a fire tore through Hole in the Wall Gang camp for seriously ill children in Connecticut, almost $3 million has been raised to help rebuild the facility that was founded by the late actor Paul Newman. That includes pledges of $1 million from the Newman’s Own Foundation and a promise by Travelers and the Travelers Championship PGA golf tournament to match up to $1 million in other donations. Jimmy Canton, the camp’s chief executive officer said Friday that just over $900,000 has come in from other sources, including charitable foundations, individuals including celebrities such as golfer Bubba Watson, and even the families of campers. “It’s just been so inspiring,” Canton said. Carly Demartino, 16, of Granby has been attending camp since 2016 after she was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. Being able to do things such as scale the camp’s climbing tower and zip line to the bottom gave her a feeling of accomplishment and normalcy, she said. “Everyone who has been to camp has had their bump in the road...so now that Hole in the Wall has hit its bump in the road, we want to pay it back,” she said. “Having had such great experiences there, we want to bring it back to what it was.” Canton said insurance will cover much of the rebuilding costs, but the plan is to construct a better, much larger and safer single-level complex that is more accessible to children with a wide variety of physical needs. The camp was built in 1988 to accommodate about 300 children each summer, he said. The charity now serves about 20,000 kids a year on site and through community and hospital-based programing. “Those structures were intended and designed to house life-changing memories and they served their purpose beautifully,” Canton said. “That energy and those memories make our campground sacred and those new structures will hold those memories as well and be ready to take on new ones.” Canton said they plan to build the new buildings out of something more durable than wood, will include sprinkler systems and large underground cisterns. Fire departments used tankers and water from the camp’s pond to put out the Feb. 12 blaze, which destroyed buildings housing the camp’s woodshop, arts and crafts, cooking, creative writing program and camp store. The fire remains under investigation, but authorities have said they have not found any evidence of arson. Camp director Alan Pender was the only person at the camp when the fire broke out, Canton said. He and fire officials were alerted to the blaze by an automated alarm. Canton said the fire won’t disrupt plans to hold limited camping programs this spring and summer. Because of COVID-19 and the need for social distancing, plans already had been made to move outdoors or into tents much of the programming that would have taken place inside the buildings that burned, he said. Canton said they hope to begin construction in September and have it completed in time for the summer of 2022.

‘Nomadland’ couldn’t be more timely By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge EDWARDSVILLE — When I first saw the trailer for “Nomadland” I knew we would be discussing the movie extensively during awards season. It’s the quaint and lighthearted type of movie that most adult audiences love when they pretend to be interested in ultra low-budget independent cinema. It’s part later-life adventure, part travelogue. It’s not a vacation picture per se, but it has a freedom about its spirit. There’s also a tremendously sad thread that runs through the movie that touches on the real life crises we’re facing in America right now: our massive wealth imbalance, a suicide epidemic and a generation being lost to opioid addiction. These ideas might seem like they would not necessarily be able to coexist in one harmonious picture, but there’s one other reason why this one is so riveting and that is our star, Frances McDormand, who thrives on this warts-and-all type of vanity project. This in and of itself is ironic because I can also promise you this film holds no vanity whatsoever for the actress.

McDormand plays Fern, a hardscrabble nomad living in a van and traveling about the American West in the times since she lost her job, home and husband in 2011. U.S Gypsum closed its mine in Empire, Nevada, at that time and the closure turned the company’s track housing development for 750 employee families into a ghost town (a real-life event). Fern’s husband died after a lingering cancer battle not long after. Facing a devastation that I can’t even fathom, our heroine decided that she was never going to be left with the rug pulled out from under her again. Fern outfits a white delivery van as a tiny mobile home and moves about from part-time seasonal jobs that keep her semi-employed, but never anchored to a schedule. At Christmas she works at a busy Amazon distribution center. Later she’s cleaning bathrooms at Badlands National Park campgrounds and harvesting beets in Nebraska in October. My favorite gig was seeing her in a paper hat at the Wall Drug hamburger stand. The success of “Nomadland” lies in great part to its deftness. Hardly does such a self-assured movie captivate me as fully as this one did. That it’s only the third feature from writer/director/producer Chloé Zhao is amazing. I am not familiar with the Chinese auteur, but I will be actively seeking out her previous works post haste.

There is one other professional actor in the cast. David Strathairn plays a fellow nomad who has a little crush on Fern despite her constant reticence. They meet at a rally and share a moment in a country music dance hall. Months later they’re flipping those burgers side by side in South Dakota before Dave asks her to come visit him at his son’s house where a new grandbaby is luring him away from the road. Strathairn is a solid backstop for this movie that features McDormand in every scene. The rest of the cast is made up of non-actors playing fictionalized version of themselves. Fern’s two best friends are Linda May, a co-worker who makes their shared jobs less menial and more fun, and Swankie, a veteran nomad who uses her life experience to better prepare Fern for the curveballs that come in the forms of flat tires, dead batteries, unwilling parking lot operators and the absence of proper bathrooms. Swankie is also terminally ill and her peace with that is a mystery to Fern. Bob Wells is a van-living guru who the trio point to as mentor. He sports a Santa Claus beard and a penchant for telling the hard truth to those who need to hear it. This is quite the ensemble and I loved them. “Nomadland” runs 108 minutes and is rated R for some full nudity. I give this film four stars out of four.

Following screenings at the Venice, Toronto and New York film festivals, and a special-event presentation from Telluride in Los Angeles, the Frances McDormand-led drama “Nomadland” has garnered significant awards buzz.

Alton concert aims to warm hearts and souls

By Vicki Bennington For The Telegraph

ALTON — Alton Symphony Orchestra continues its virtual concert series, this time while also highlighting the latest Marie Stillwell Young Artists’ Competition first place-winner, Isabella Saldaña. Maestro Wm. Shane Williams has kept the 76th season of the symphony on track with concerts that people can enjoy from the comfort and safety of their own home. Williams has created new concerts using pre-recorded selections from past performances. The next one in the season’s offerings, “The Warmth of Music” is available on the orchestra’s website, https://www. altonsymphonyorchestra.org/ . Amidst the chilly weather of late, Williams chose pieces that will bring warmth to the listener through the experience of

music. “With all the snow and frigid temperatures, it’s a perfect time to fix a delicious cup of hot tea or cocoa, sit in your favorite chair, and let the excitement and fervor of the music warm your heart,” he said. Selections include Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter,” I. Allegro Vivace; John Williams’ “Raiders March;” “Shaker Variants” by Elliot Del Borgo; “William Tell Overture” by Gioachino Rossini, and selections from Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique.” “Maestro Williams has created an excellent online experience for these concerts,” said Alton Symphony vice president, Jessica Poddig. “Between each song he has tidbits of information about the piece or composer and occasionally, he will have a joke (all of which adds to the entertainment).”

As this year’s first place winner in the Marie Stillwell Young Artists’ Competition, Saldaña will record a video performance of “Fantasie” by Georges Hüe, on flute, which is available along with the ASO virtual concert. Saldaña is 15 years old, and has been playing flute for six years. She is a sophomore at O’Fallon Township High School in O’ Fallon, Illinois. This is her second year as alternate with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, and she has played in the OTHS honors wind ensemble, OTHS flute choir, Illinois Music Education Association band and Belleville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and was chosen as piccolo for the 2020 ILMEA orchestra. Saldaña received honorable mention in Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s 2020 Flute Day high school competition, earned superior ratings in solo and ensemble contests, and won first place in the Belleville Philhar-

monic Youth Orchestra Tuerke Concerto Competition in 2019. In addition to the flute and piccolo, Saldaña has played piano for nine years. She is also a plant-based cook and baker, and runs with her school’s cross-country team. She is part of a First Tech Challenge robotics team, as well as her school’s Math Team, Spanish Club and Marching Band. Typically, the February concert also includes a joint performance with the eighth graders of the Alton Youth Symphony, which Poddig manages. Since ASO is unable to perform with them this year, due to the pandemic, a clip of a past joint performance will be included in the virtual concert. “I greatly look forward to the time when we (ASO and AYS) are all able to safely play together again,” Poddig said. AYS was founded in 1969, and pro-

Maestro Wm. Shane Williams conducting Alton Symphony Orchestra during an earlier concert. “The Warmth of Music” currently is on the orchestra’s website. (For The Edge)

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, February 25, 2021 • 19 vides a unique opportunity for elementary and middle school students to play in a full orchestra setting and opportunities to grow musically. It has served students from over 30 different school districts and participates in community outreach through the AYS Chamber Ensemble. Poddig said the response to the virtual concerts has been amazing. “The number of people watching has been close to the average of our usual in-person concerts,” she said. “We are seeing a lot of positive feedback, and many people reminiscing about previous performances - from patrons and our own performers. “Of course, we all wish we could be doing live performances again, but we are currently waiting until it’s safe for our musicians and patrons. Maestro Williams has been doing amazing work at making these virtual

concerts fluid and enjoyable!” she said. Poddig graduated from Lindenwood University in 2014 with a degree in music performance on French horn. Since then, she has been performing with local musical productions and teaching private lessons. She has performed with the Alton Symphony Orchestra since fall 2014. In 2015, she joined the Board of Directors. “I realized that the board was doing many things that I thought were important for the community: educational outreach opportunities for young musicians, fundraising, promoting local businesses, and involvement with other local performing arts groups,” Poddig said. In 2016, she became the vice president, and is proud to be part of an organization that “Makes Music Come Alive For All.” She began working with the Alton Youth Symphony because she

wanted to help make a difference in the lives of young musicians. “I grew up in rural Michigan, and in my area, we did not have access to orchestra,” Poddig said. “Getting as many young students involved in music as possible has been a long-time personal goal of mine. Working closely with Alton Symphony Orchestra, we’ve been able to start giving scholarships to young musicians in need, which has always been something that I’ve wanted to be a part of.” ASO has 55 current members, which represents a 30% growth in recent years. “The Warmth of Music” concert is available at www.altonsymphonyorchestra.com. There is no charge for the virtual concerts, but Williams said donations are always welcome. On Friday, March 26, the orchestra will hold a virtual trivia night fundraiser. Visit the website for upcoming details.
