EDWARDSVILLE — Edison’s Entertainment Complex has always been an all-ages playground, but now there’s an expansion underway to make even more room for grown ups. Edison’s is readying to unveil The Outlet, a multi-functional space that will be open to the public on Fridays for those age 21 and older, when unused on weekends for private bookings. The Outlet at Edison’s will open next month, sticking with Edison’s Entertainment Complex’s theme of electricity while having a theme of its own, to be revealed at The Outlet’s Grand Opening Friday, March 27. “Friday nights we will have live music,” said Edison’s president, Matt McSparin, of Edwardsville. “We want to make Fridays a staple for the public.” Edwardsville’s The Outlet at Edison’s connects to the complex’s building as a whole, and the new space will be more than a hotspot for nightlife. The Outlet at Edison’s, 2477 S. State Route 157, will serve as space for weekly local events, such as Red Hill Church’s Sunday services, as well as for private events, such as wedding receptions, corporate events and parties for all occasions. The Outlet has its own full-service bar and a distinct menu, separate from that of Edison’s longstanding full-service restaurant. The Outlet’s bar will be stocked with common brews on tap, but with an emphasis on local breweries, McSparin noted. The Outlet also will keep guests entertained with multiple televisions encircling seating with surround-sound and multiple bar games including billiards, darts, shuffleboard, foosball and 1952 vintage arcade games. “It’s kind of like ‘yesteryear meets today’ type of feel,” McSparin explained. “Most of the decor in here, I found. “It felt a little like being a picker!” He actually sourced and found most of The Outlet’s interior decor items at Facebook Marketplace, including the pool table. McSparin previously had his own event planning company and, before that, he worked in the sports marketing world for the St. Louis Cardinals and for the Chicago White Sox. Seating inside the new venue accommodates up to approximately 200 people and, seasonally, another 100 with its outdoor patio, which will feature a fire pit

MADISON & JERSEY COUNTIES’ COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT BOON

Commercial development ups bottom line, improves property values

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

In the last few years commercial development in Madison and Jersey counties has renewed vigor, particularly in areas of redevelopment. Not only does commercial development help municipalities’ bottom lines, but it also can improve property values. One of the most anticipated developments in the Riverbend area, and a longtime coming, is a new movie theater at Alton Square Mall, in Alton, in Madison County. The eight-screen NCG Cinema is projected to open this summer. “It is being constructed now,” Alton Mayor Brant Walker said. “We’ve tirelessly worked three years to get this done and we’re thrilled to death that we’re finally getting it finished.” New construction along Alton’s Homer Adams Parkway include Smoothie King, 317 Homer Adams Parkway, and Santino’s Steak and Pasta House, 180 E. Center Drive, as well as a 28,000-square-foot Planet Fitness complex expected to be completed this spring at 3000 Homer Adams Parkway, as part of a renovation of Center Plaza. The greater Alton community also continues to benefit from capital investments by BJC HealthCare and OSF HealthCare, including from the new $14 million Moeller Cancer Center at Saint Anthony’s Hospital. In East Alton, at Eastgate Plaza, Todd and Julia Kennedy own the entire once-prominent Eastgate Plaza, now regaining a stellar position because of the couple’s leadership. A Renaissance is underway for the outdoor strip mall, built circa 1950s. Julia Kennedy’s namesake business, Julia’s Banquet Center, the centerpiece of Eastgate, underwent a 2-month comprehensive facelift and remodel early last

year, starting a season of renewal for the plaza. Elite Hockey Facility became the plaza’s first new tenant early last year and Blue Ice Creamery, owned by Madison County residents Kyle and Kelley Shirley, celebrated its one-year anniversary last weekend. Other businesses that became part of Eastgate Plaza within the last few years include Club Fitness; The Vault: Luxury Warehouse Storage, for cars, boats, RVs and more; Jackpot Gaming Parlor; Dollar General, which updated its facade last spring. Mr. Pancho’s Mexican Grill and J.J. Thermo’s bar/restaurant, with its own outdoor courtyard, opened this past summer. Followed in the fall by Riverbend Axe Throwing and Bohemian Road Boutique, a specialty women’s clothing/accessories retail store, owned by Kayla Logan, of East Alton. A new tanning spa is coming to the plaza soon, and purportedly, so too is a new pizza place. Longtime established businesses remain — the East Alton Ice Arena and AMC Classic Eastgate 6.

“Eastgate is a great location, close to St. Louis and major points and highways in Illinois,” said Julia’s manager Tim Lane. “The previous owners are in California and the plaza went into disrepair. If people didn’t get past Julia’s front door, they didn’t like the look of the plaza, so Todd and Julia decided they had to do one of two things: move or buy the mall and invest in it.” “It was money well-spent,” said Lane, who attended East Alton-Wood River High School with Todd, graduating a few years ahead of him. Last summer, the Kennedys also had Eastgate Plaza’s 250-capacity one-level parking lot resurfaced. Eastgate still has prime space available for lease. In Edwardsville, the older Montclaire Shopping Center, on Troy Road, gained a new tenant six months ago with Obar Café. Owner Chelsea Coughlin and her business partner, EJ Jones, owner of Next Level fitness and sports company, opened the health-conscious restaurant.

A multimillion-dollar economic development project, the Mid-American International Gateway business park, is coming to Jerseyville. The Jersey County project was selected last August by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) as one of Illinois’ first 16 Super Sites. The Super Sites program is designed to provide a statewide inventory of large industrial sites that meet a consistent set of standards, Illinois DCEO’s David Pierson said. The project is the result of a collaboration between Stonemont Financial Group, a leading private real estate investment firm headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Jerseyville Economic Development Council. The park will be served by the Kansas City Southern (KCS) rail network, which played a key role in forging the ongoing collaboration. The nearly 1,400-acre rail-served logistics park

site will be located east of the existing KCS rail line that passes through rural Jerseyville on its southeast side, near Crystal Lake Road. Stonemont estimated that investments in the project could ultimately total approximately $500 million. “We anticipate the project will support new, longterm jobs that could help keep young people working here in in our community until they retire,” Jerseyville Mayor William Russell said in 2018, when the project was announced. This month, a new barbeque restaurant, Jersey Hometown, opened in Downtown Jerseyville, at 309 N. State St., owned and operated by Debbie and Terry Wedding. They purchased the building in November 2018. Reach Jill Moon at 618-208-6448 and Twitter @jill_ moon.

Renderings show the basic design of a new movie theater, NCG Cinema, under construction and expected to open this coming summer at Alton Square Mall, in Alton. NCG is a movie theater chain headquartered in Owosso, Michigan, owned and operated by the Geiger family. The chain consists at present of 25 theaters with 147 screens across the Midwest. Operated by NCG, the Alton theater will feature eight state-of-the-art auditoriums, with luxury seating, in the space formerly occupied by Sears, inside the Alton Square Mall. What are the differences between real estate agents and brokers?

Real estate transactions often involve significant amounts of money. As a result, it’s common for both buyers and sellers to enlist the services of a host of professionals with real estate experience. Both buyers and sellers may work with real estate agents and/or real estate brokers en route to buying or selling their homes. Agents and brokers are not one and the same, and there are some important distinctions between the two.

construction, and property management. Requirements vary, but Realtor.com notes that brokers often must work as licensed real estate agents for no less than three years before they can earn their broker’s license. There is more than one type of real estate

broker. Principal/designated brokers oversee all agents at a given firm and ensure the agents act in compliance with all real estate laws. Managing brokers tend to focus on the hiring and training of agents. Associate brokers have their broker’s license but work

directly under a managing broker. Real estate agents and brokers can help buyers, sellers and investors successfully navigate real estate transactions, and each can serve their clients in different ways.

and all parties involved need to ensure they are protected as they complete transactions and negotiations. That is why it is essential to have a real estate attorney in one’s corner. A lawyer trained in real estate law will review contracts and other documents like title transfers

and deeds. The attorney also handles the closing. Throughout the process, attorneys will provide legal guidance and explain terminology related to the transaction. In case of a dispute, the attorney will also provide legal representation in the courtroom, if needed, or negotiate a

resolution on a client’s behalf. Even though a real estate attorney is another expense in the process of purchasing real estate, it is a worthwhile investment for the protection and peace of mind attorneys provide.

Real estate agent

According to Realtor.com, real estate agents are professionally licensed individuals who can help both buyers and sellers. Agents also may help property owners rent their homes. The amount of training real estate agents need to earn their licenses varies by state. Once individuals finish their required training, they must take a written exam that tests their knowledge of federal real estate laws and general principles as well as the laws specific to the state in which they want to become licensed. Only after passing this exam do individuals become recognized real estate agents. Investopedia notes that achieving agent status is the starting point for most real estate professionals.

Real estate broker

Real estate brokers are those professionals who have continued their education past the agent level and obtained a broker’s license. Each state has its own requirements in regard to becoming a licensed broker, but education and examinations are necessary regardless of where a person lives. Realtor.com notes that the extra coursework to earn a broker’s license focuses on various topics, including ethics, contracts, taxes, and insurance. Agents may learn about these topics as well, but coursework for prospective brokers goes into more depth than it does at the agent level. Brokers also will study and learn about legal issues in regard to real estate. The legal issues brokers may learn about include brokerage operations, real estate investments,

Did you know?

A real estate attorney is an important professional to have in one’s corner when buying or selling a home. The legal resource Find Law says that buying and selling a home can be one of the most significant purchases made in a person’s lifes. Real estate law can be complicated,

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

Live every day like it’s taco Tuesday! By Vicki Bennington For The Edge

HOLIDAY SHORES — Every once in a while, I tag along as a special guest of the select taco aficionado organization, “Give ‘em Something to Taco ‘bout.” Consequently, they have been responsible for my finding and trying tacos at various restaurants that I either might be unfamiliar with, or at least, have not tried tacos there before. Case in point, Wiggler’s Bar and Grill in Holiday Shores. Of course, we went on Taco Tuesday, since the group Vicki is always in search of the Bennington “perfect” taco. We’ve discovered that’s a big night almost anywhere that has specials on tacos and tacorelated dishes. Wiggler’s was no different. In fact, it was crowded enough that we couldn’t find a table, at first, and started the evening with some of our group sitting at the bar, while others stood behind. Eventually, there was a table that we quickly grabbed as a family was putting on their coats to leave.

The Taco Tuesday menu specials included fried tacos, taco salad, chimichanga, fajita tacos, chicken quesadilla, chicken chimichanga, quesadilla, a two-tacos-and-margarita combination for $5, cheesy bean dip and, if you weren’t into tacos, you could still get the quarter-pound burger and french fries special for $5. This Taco Tuesday specials menu has the biggest variety of any that I’ve seen. And there’s also a fairly extensive regular menu, in addition to the specials. Tacos are always available (not with the same pricing, but still reasonable), with choices of steak, shrimp, fish or chicken. Two dozen appetizer choices are offered three for $15, so my group ordered chicken livers, mushrooms and cheese sticks. All were tasty, and chicken livers can’t be found just anywhere, so that was a surprise treat. For dinner, I ordered the two tacos and margarita special. My drink was tasty and hit the spot, while waiting for our orders to arrive. Others in the group joined me with the taco special, while some tried the taco salad, and one person, who isn’t a taco lover, ordered the spicy chicken sandwich, with hot sauce,

lettuce, tomato, mayo and provolone cheese. Everyone agreed that the food was good, and the low prices made it even better. A pound of wings is $7.50, with a long list of sauce choices, from sweet and mild, to hot and spicy. Quesadillas, nachos, soups and salads — chef, grilled chicken, chicken Caesar and a few others, all work great as starters (or as meals). The sandwiches and wraps menu has several selections, like, shrimp po’ boy, catfish, club or turkey melt, burgers, pulled pork and

sliders. If you want french fries on the side, order one of the baskets, with chicken strips or chunks, shrimp, chicken livers or catfish nuggets. Or if you are really hungry and need something more, go with the dinners, which come with two sides. And in case you don’t know what a “frittille” is, it’s Wiggler’s name for a deep-fried pizza. Now that’s not something you see every day. The atmosphere and décor is water- and

Double feature: ‘Downhill’ dud, ‘The Photograph’ peters out

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

There’s a very pedigreed new comedy recently released that brings together a talented production team and two of the most iconic television and feature comedy performers of the last 20 years. It’s just too bad that the end result isn’t necessarily funny. “Downhill” is a remake of the Swedish film “Force Majeure” from 2014 and maybe they should have left well enough alone. Billie (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Pete Staunton (Will Ferrell) are on vacation to a lovely European ski resort near the Swiss Alpine border with their two sons when a near tragedy strikes early on. A controlled avalanche, one that is designed to prevent actual tragedy were it to happen unexpectedly, sets off one afternoon as they’re lunching at a lodge’s elevated deck. From the family’s perspective at the table, this wall of snow and ice is about to kill them all, in horrific fashion. Billie throws herself, full body, atop her boys as an icy layer of light shrapnel showers the area. The last thing she sees before closing her eyes, though, is Pete grabbing for his cell phone as he clomps away from the scene toward the

FOOD FOR THOUGHT continued from Page 20 boat-related, with the location near the lake at Holiday Shores, and we were told the outdoor patio makes it a particular hot spot in the summer. Inside, darts, a golf game, shuffleboard, foosball and other games, with live music on

safety of the indoors. Bad move, Pete. The rest of the movie is a dark, emotionally troubled examination of their entire relationship as Billie tries to make sense of Pete’s cowardly act and he, in turn, throws around justifications that are simultaneously false and pathetic. There’s even a scene where a pair of Pete’s workplace friends (Zach Woods and Zoe Chao) — who he misguidedly invites to dinner since they’re in the area — presents their case for which parent was acted rightly during the avalanche. I stopped laughing when the two sons were brought in as witnesses to pit Mom against Dad in a sad bid for one of them to be right and the other to be wrong. The signature styling of Ferrell (childish buffoonery) and Louis-Dreyfus (immensely precise timing and perfected delivery) are largely absent from “Downhill,” LouisDreyfus’ first foray into producing. Academy Award-winners Jim Rash and Nat Faxon directed and wrote the screenplay, along with Jesse Armstrong. Another new release, one I had high hopes for, is “The Photograph.” Appropriately timed for the month of Valentine’s Day, this movie is a tender historical romance, tied between two generations, exploring what it means to find and fight for love in vastly different

some nights, all make for a fun atmosphere. Wiggler’s is at 7243 Saint James Drive in Holiday Shores. For more information, visit Wiggler’s Bar and Grill on Facebook. In this column, Vicki Bennington shares her love of food and all that involves, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants, to chef conversations, new trends and fads, and things to try at home. ways. It receives a passing mark purely for the chemistry between its two contemporary leads who make falling in love look just as great as advertised. Journalist Michael Block (LaKeith Stanfield) is writing an in-depth piece for his news magazine about post-Deepwater Horizon life in New Orleans. One of Block’s sources (Rob Morgan) tells the writer of a lost love, Christina Eames (Chanté Adams), who went on to become a celebrated photographer in New York City, Block’s base of operations. Returning to the city puts Block in the mood to start another project, but he’s sad to find Eames has recently passed away. Instead, he seeks out her adult daughter, Mae (Issa Rae), for an interview about her famous mother. And it’s love at first sight. The majority of the subsequent action in “The Photograph” is a split narrative about the elder Eames’ troubled love life, prior to her fleeing to New Orleans and Block and Mae getting to know each other in the present day. It’s best to sum this movie up as a “Nicholas Sparks story,” without any of the nonsense or flash and only with the serious (dry) parts. That, though, may have held it back from greatness. “Downhill” runs 86 minutes and is rated R for

language and some sexual material. I give this film one and a half stars out of four. “The Photograph” runs 106 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sexuality and brief strong language. I give this film two stars out of four.

Star-studded stage

Toby Keith, LL Cool J among Illinois State Fair bookings The Edge

SPRINGFIELD — Following last year’s historically successful state fair season, which generated record-breaking revenue and the highest grandstand attendance in years, Illinois State Fair Manager Kevin Gordon announced six of the 11 concerts for this year’s fair. “The lineup reflects a diverse mix of genres from both established artists and emerging stars that will appeal to a wide variety of fans,” Gordon said. “Toby Keith’s mix of country anthems and party tunes are the summer staple we can build the rest of this year’s lineup around,” he said. “And when that lineup already includes popular hip-hop artist and actor LL Cool J, country’s newest stars, like, Kane Brown and Chris Young, and alternative-rock powerhouses Puddle of Mudd and Fuel, we are well on our way to having another record-breaking state fair lineup.” Keith, a country music megastar, brings his “Country Comes to Town” tour to the Illinois State Fair on Sunday, Aug. 16, capping a full day of special activities for Illinois veterans on “Veterans & Gold Star Families Day” at the fair. Fittingly, Craig Morgan — an U.S. Army veteran himself – will serve as Keith’s opening act. Keith, a multi-platinum selling singer-songwriter, has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide during a career spanning 25 years. He has had 61 singles on Billboard’s Country Charts, including 20 number one hit songs. Hits, like, “How Do You Like Me Now?!,” “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” and “As Good As I Once Was” have made Keith a can’t-miss country concert across the nation. In addition,

in what Keith himself describes as his most rewarding experiences, his 11 USO Tours to date have enhanced the lives of nearly 256,000 troops and military families in 18 countries with more than 285 events. In 2014, he was recognized for his commitment with the Spirit of the USO Award. Morgan is best known for his hit single “That’s What I Love About Sunday,” but has had six songs, including “International Harvester” and “Bonfire,” reach the Billboard Chart’s top 10. Country’s rising superstars also are slated to hit the Illinois Lottery Grandstand stage with Kane Brown headlining the concert on the fair’s first full day, Friday, Aug. 14, and Chris Young performing Tuesday, Aug. 18. Debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Brown’s newest album, “Experiment,” was released November 2018. The acclaimed singer-songwriter, who first rose to stardom on social media, released his first full-length album, self-titled “Kane Brown,” December 2016. The hit single, “What Ifs,” came from the album, and in October 2017, Brown became the first artist to have simultaneous number ones on all five main Billboard country charts. Following a record last year on the road playing to more than 400,000 fans on his headlining tour, Young, a multi-platinum entertainer, will bring his arena/amphitheater “Town Ain’t Big Enough World Tour 2020” to Springfield Tuesday, Aug. 18. Young will be joined by multi-platinum performer Scotty McCreery, as direct support, along with Payton Smith. IL STATE FAIR continued from Page 22

LL Cool J takes the stage. A two-time Grammy Award winner, LL Cool J is best known for hiphop favorites “Mama Said Knock You Out,” “Going Back to Cali”and “Hey Lover.” In 2010, VH1 placed him on its “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” list, and, in 2017, LL Cool J became the first rapper to be honored with the Kennedy Center Honors. Yet another genre will be the highlight of Thursday night, Aug. 20, as legendary post-grunge alternative-rock artists, Puddle of Mudd, and special guests, Fuel, as well as Trapt and Tantric, will slash their way through electric sets. The fair is offering special pricing for this show, with all tickets — including seats in the Grandstand and standing-room only on the track — costing $12 each. Puddle of Mudd has sold more than seven million albums to date and had a string of number one mainstream rock hits, including “Control” and “She Hates Me” from their triple-platinum album, “Come Clean.” Fuel’s had a massive hit single with “Shimmer,” and their second album hit multi-platinum, driven by the singles “Innocent” and “Hemorrhage,” which remained at No. 1 for 10 weeks. At an even greater bargain, The Traveling Salvation Show will play a free show on “Senior Night” at the fair, Monday, Aug. 17. The Neil Diamond Tribute returns this year, after inclement weather pushed up the start time of last year’s scheduled performance, which caused many disappointed fans to miss this concert. This up-tempo, rock-oriented tribute to the legendary singer will have everyone dancing and singing along to all of Diamond’s classic hits. Tickets will go on sale Saturday, April 25, during the Illinois State Fair’s “Corndog Kickoff” special event. Visit https://www2.illinois.gov/statefair/info/ for Corndog Kickoff, schedule and ticket information.

The Illinois State Fair will host a full day of special activities for Illinois veterans on “Veterans & Gold Star Families Day,” Sunday, Aug. 16.
