Both Metzger and Edge have trained with the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s training program at its prestigious Ryan Opera Center. Edge has a voice reminiscent of many great leading sopranos who came before her. “I’m thrilled to catch Mathilda at the beginning of what promises to be a very important career on the international stage,” Hopkins noted. “Both of their voices

continued from Page 5 series will take place twice from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, and Thursday, Dec. 10, at the Wildey. The Masterclasses Series is generously funded and underwritten by the Rotary Club of Edwardsville. Guests will be able to learn by watching Brunssen work with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville students in developing the operatic voice. “The board and I are extremely grateful to the members of the Edwardsville Rotary Club for recognizing the powerful impact an arts organization can have for our community,” Hopkins said. “With so many fabulous artists joining for Opera Edwardsville’s performances, likewise we are thrilled to be building an educational platform to create new opportunities and support arts education happening in our area. “These events will illuminate how an operatic voice is trained, and support students who will sing at these masterclasses,” Hopkins explained. “Learning how to perform under pressure is an important component of a singer’s training, and masterclasses provide a safe environment to step out of the practice room and into performance mode, with adrenaline and nerves at play. I hope the community will join for these masterclasses, they’re incredibly inspiring and engaging!” In November, the adorable and immediately popular OE Kid’s Opera!, also a free public event, presents “Three Little Pigs: An Opera for Kids!,” also funded by Edwardsville Rotary Club, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Wildey. The music of Mozart is delightfully repurposed to tell the classic fable of the three little pigs and the big bad wolf, in a 40-minute performance, in English, intended for children’s enjoyment. Wolz also is a recent winner of the coveted Metropolitan Opera competition. “In 2019, OE was thrilled to welcome legendary soprano and Grammy-winner Christine Brewer, and pianist and recent Grammy-winner for ‘Best Classical Album,’ Craig Terry; in 2020, we’re bringing two titans of the early music world to our stage,” Hopkins said. Vinikour and North are two of the world’s most important instrumentalists. Vinikour is a sought-after harpsichordist and recording artist; North is one of the top theorboist in the world. This program draws on music written hundreds of years ago by Praetorius, Purcell, Buxtehude and Bach. “These performers are very special — don’t miss them, and don’t miss what will be our third Christmas at the Wildey,” Hopkins said. “I love our local history and believe OE is the next era of exciting things happening in the storied Wildey Theatre, about which I’m thrilled that OE is finding a home. “If we travel back into the theater’s past we find that turn-of-the-century audiences would have enjoyed touring

vaudeville players or theater groups, while an entire recent generation holds nostalgia for the days of Wildey’s movie theater,” he said. “We can look back and marvel at the descriptions of the original chandelier and organ, while also reflecting on a later era of injustice with racially divided balconies. The Wildey has undergone many changes throughout its time, and I’m proud OE is contributing to the theater’s rich history.”

‘How I bought a tiny home’: One woman’s story

By Valerie Lai NerdWallet via AP

HGTV shows have popularized tiny homes — typically those smaller than 400 square feet — in a big way. Many people are drawn to this alternative path to homeownership as a way to save before committing to a more expensive piece of property. But getting a tiny home is different from the typical homebuying process in several ways — for one, it’s unlikely finding a real estate agent who can show a dozen options). The process can be complex logistically and financially, so it’s important to know what you’re in for. Annie Colpitts, 30, a marketing coordinator, has spent more than a year in an 8.5-by-20-foot home that she designed and helped build. She lives 20 minutes north of Richmond, Virginia, and parks the home on a small piece of private property that she rents for $350 a month. Colpitts left a spacious downtown apartment — and paused plans to buy a conventional home — to embrace this new way of living. Colpitts shared why she chose a tiny home and how she financed it. (Her answers slightly edited for clarity and length.) • Why a tiny home? A friend had a really terrible home-buying experience involving major hidden issues, like, mold and termite damage, which made me reconsider buying a house in Richmond. The scale of a tiny house seemed much more manageable to me. I was also following “Van Life” on social media and connected with the idea of tiny living and I already lived minimalistically. As much as I loved the idea of living in a van on the road, I work a job that doesn’t accommodate that lifestyle, and downsizing to a fully mobile situation seemed unnecessary for my circumstances. • What was your living situation before? I always rented in Richmond,

ever since I graduated college. My last apartment was in the heart of downtown, and it was a pretty swanky one-bedroom with plenty of space for me (roughly 700 square feet). I didn’t really have a reason to leave that living situation except that I was renting space that wasn’t mine, I wanted my own space, that I could modify. • Describe the process, timeline? The process took one year. I had the idea in 2017. I spent the first few months researching floor plans. About six months into the process, in spring 2018, I contacted the bank for a loan. I moved in that December. • Why build? A lot of people piecemeal design a tiny home in their backyard or buy from builders who do everything from beginning to end, but my finances weren’t set up to support that. I found a builder that offered a more affordable process by taking my floor plan but letting me build parts of the home. They handled ordering windows, setting up electrical, plumbing, and let me do some of the more laborintensive, less-skilled work. • What’s your finance approach? I became a minimalist by circumstance, not by choice. For a long time, I was in the nonprofit world, so I was working long hours and barely getting paid. I’m grateful to be in a job now where the amount of money I make is not an issue, but I continue to only buy what I need. • How did you finance your tiny home? This is a notoriously hard part of the process. Tiny houses were created to live in the gray area between mobile homes and actual houses, which makes funding them hard. Inspection processes for tiny homes are still new compared to mobile and traditional homes, so lenders hesitate to provide funding for a home that they perceive could be unsafe or fall apart.

Cover: Annie Colpitts poses in the doorway of her tiny home, in Ashland, Virginia. Colpitts designed and helped build the home. (Courtesy of Annie Colpitts/NerdWallet via AP|For Metro East House Hunters)

My initial all-in budget was $35,000. I went the tiny home loan route, got one for $28,000, which covered about 80% of the building costs. I did an unsecured consumer loan that my parents co-signed. The bank had not done tiny home loans before, but they knew it was becoming more of a thing and were open to trying it with me. I saved for the rest, doing a lot of dog walking, house sitting, took temp jobs and sold stuff. I also did a lot of the side hustle apps, like, ridesharing, food delivery, and saved aggressively from my normal job. I’ll pay off the home next year.

• How has life changed since moving into your tiny home? I have more space in my head. Maybe it’s also because I don’t live in the city anymore, but I come home and feel calm immediately. This is my retreat. I’m more intentional with that I fill my life with, in terms of time and things. Now I go to Target and buy only one thing. • What advice would you give to others about a tiny home? You don’t have to wait for a tiny home to start living tiny. If you’re waiting for a physical new place to start making those changes, it’s going to be such a culture shock.

I spent a year before getting rid of stuff and growing comfortable with less. • What are your long-term goals for the tiny home? I’ll live tiny until it doesn’t work for me. Some people move into tiny homes until they pay off all their debt, then they can buy a house. I don’t have that philosophy. I love it right now. I’d like to buy some land and move my tiny house for more ownership, privacy. This article originally appeared on the personal finance website NerdWallet. Valerie Lai is a writer at NerdWallet.

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington Eggs-actly what I needed! By Vicki Bennington For The Edge Egg sandwiches have always been a staple item for me. When I was a teenager, still living with my parents, they were never surprised if I dug out the little skillet — just the right size for a fried egg — at any time of the day or night, to make a snack. Back then, I used bacon drippings in the skillet (hey, everybody did!), and hard-fried one egg, always deliberately breaking the yolk — so it wasn’t runny at all — and then placed it on two pieces of dry Colonial white bread. No sauce, no additives, no fuss — and I loved it. As an adult, I didn’t make them all that often as a snack, and most of the time, when cooking eggs for my family, for some reason, I didn’t make many egg sandwiches. It became almost like a childhood memory. A few months ago, I made one for Vicki myself and one for my husband, and he Bennington began to really like home-cooked egg sandwiches. So much so, that anytime I would be clueless as to what to fix for dinner, he would excitedly ask, “Do you want to make egg sandwiches?!”

Sometimes, I did. He prefers two hard-fried eggs on wheat bread. At least, at that time, that’s what he requested. One day, since then, while watching the movie “Spanglish” for the umpteenth time (umpteenth is a funny word, but my mom used to use it, and I always knew she meant “a lot!”), I happened to hone in on the part where a critically acclaimed chef, John Clasky (Adam Sandler), is trying to make a snack after a long day’s work, and everyone keeps bugging him. I never paid much attention to the sandwich the first several times I watched “Spanglish.” In fact, sometimes I would be just listening to it. But this particular time, I noticed the sandwich and decided it looked really good. Sandler was supposed to be a chef in the movie, so you have to figure even the snacks might be gourmet. I wanted to make that sandwich myself. Turns out, it was created to be a special part of the movie by actual famed chef Thomas Keller, owner of California restaurant The French Laundry, in Napa Valley. He’s written several cookbooks. OK, this may seem off-subject, but it’s not. The internet never ceases to amaze me. And while I could be referring to many subjects with that one remark, the amazing part is, that just when I

think I’ve been the only one to really notice a small part in a movie or think I have had some revelation, I find that I definitely was not the only one who was entranced by something like this sandwich! I found the exact recipe and many comments about this sandwich, along with fans of the movie, about which many say was underrated. But here’s how to make the sandwich. Give it a try — exactly as is — or with your own variations, eliminations or shortcuts. I have to say, it was better than my previous “standby” egg sandwich. It was really, really good! We do have an advantage in that my married daughter’s in-laws raise chickens. A lot of the time, we have the freshest eggs you can get. If we buy them at the store, I go for the choices that are cage- and antibiotic-free. Now we make “the sandwich” at home about once a week — works for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack. Sandler ate it paired with a beer in the movie. We hadn’t tried it, but some reviewers swore by the pairing. But you’ll have to make up your own mind. World’s Greatest Sandwich (aka “Spanglish” Sandwich) 3 to 4 slices of bacon 2 slices of Monterey Jack cheese 2 slices of toasted French sourdough or pain de cam-

Place slices of cheese on one side of toasted bread. Place in toaster oven or under broiler to melt. Spread mayonnaise on other slice of bread, top with bacon, sliced tomato and butter lettuce. In nonstick skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Fry egg, turning over briefly when the bottom is set (keep yolk runny). Slide finished egg on top of lettuce, top with other slice of bread. Affleck’s ‘The Way Back’ role, real life collide

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge I’ve seen movie theaters closed because of ice storms and utility interruptions. I’ve been in shows preempted by power outages and tornadoes. Heat-related blackouts have hit and civic unrest has forced closure of multiplexes where I’ve had friends working. I once was even asked to leave at an intermission of an Alfred Hitchcock double feature because of bats in the auditorium. But life in the time of the coronavirus is the first time I’ve seen mass cinema closings because of a public

health crisis. The movie theater as a classic American institution has been a staple, a ” go to” my whole adult life. Between the work that I do and have done, I’ve spent more than 22 years closely associated with this artform and its potential for pure magic. But finally — today — the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted my life in a tangible (albeit frivolous) way: I can’t go to the movies on my day off work. I won’t diminish the man-made hoarding situations and the panic of those actually facing the illness head-on, but the reality of our new lives has dawned. Side note — make a plan and keep

your wits about you. We’ll get through this! Seeing a shuttering on the horizon, I ducked into “The Way Back” on Sunday afternoon, before AMC Theatres went dark nationwide, along with Fandango, Regal, Landmark, Marcus, independent Granite City Cinema and presumably all the rest of the indie movie houses in Southwestern Illinois and greater St. Louis. By the way, Warner Bros. made “The Way Back” available as video on demand because of the darkening of movie theaters. Lucky I went, because “The Way Back” is a good movie from a director who understands the metaphor of sports in our

lives. In this case, it’s basketball, as told through the tale of an alcoholic, first-time coach (Ben Affleck) who’s learning to lead his team, while battling his own demons. Ironically, as anecdotes usually go, this is the second time I’ve reviewed a movie with this title. The other “The Way Back” is a World War II picture starring Ed Harris and came out 10 years ago. But this “The Way Back” is from director and filmmaker Gavin O’Connor, who throughout his entire career has celebrated sports in his work. “Warrior” was very good and “Miracle,” about the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, was great. The reason

being that O’Connor gets that sports represent a facet of the drama and mess of irrepressible life. These days, all anyone talks about is COVID19, but all I want to do is plan for the St. Louis Cardinals’ opening day when Clydesdales will prance around the warning track and we roll out the barrel on another season of Cardinals excellence. O’Connor is a great director who can lure actors with nothing to lose into realistic and unguarded performances and that’s why its intriguing that he cast Affleck as this flick’s lead. Affleck, an A-lister and Oscar winner, also became headline fodder because of his own

problems with booze and breakups. Real life and role playing connected in this year’s “The Way Back.” Jack Cunningham (Affleck) is hired to coach at his alma mater, a Catholic high school in the south, since having his own star-making career 20-plus years earlier. The team he coaches is full of players who all pose as tough guys, with little ambition and mild talent. But then there’s this lone quiet kid (Brandon Wilson), who we all know is destined to be the sole leader/shot maker/memorable character of a cast swallowed by a heaping helping of watching a coach fall down around his vices,

with only a small amount of basketball play. Jack leans heavily on his assistant coach (comedian Al Madrigal) as he grapples with the years-old death of his child and then the breakup of his marriage to wife Angela (Janina Gavankar). Can Jack get his life together? Maybe. Can he do it in time to help these kids move out of a last-place position in the standings? Possibly. His struggles are, just, down-to-earth enough to make us watch. “The Way Back” runs 108 minutes and is rated R for language throughout including some sexual references. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.

Ben Affleck, left, in a scene from “The Way Back,” which is available as video on demand, due to theaters nationwide going dark last week due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures|For The Edge)
