Also new and exciting for OE, the City Museum in St. Louis has joined OE to present “The Three Little Pigs: An Opera for Kids” as part of the museum’s programming. “This is in addition to several organizations that will be partnering to share our film of ‘The Three Little Pigs,’ including The Wildey, Edwardsville Public Library, SIUE Arts and Issues and Edwardsville Children’s Museum,” said Opera Edwardsville founder and Artistic Director Chase Hopkins. “I am grateful to have many wonderful partners presenting our ‘three little pigs’ as part of their virtual programming. The City Museum is surely one of St. Louis’ greatest treasures and a premiere location for interactive learning for kids, so an exciting partnership that I hope will continue in the future. Close to home, we are thrilled to be working with the Edwardsville Children’s Museum and more — all fabulous community organizations.” Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Following last year’s success with “Pinocstudent Sarah Collins, as one of three little chio,” which reached more than 1,500 chilpiggies, performs in Opera Edwardsville’s dren, OE will film an operatic adaptation of (OE) “The Three Little Pigs: An Opera for Kids,” “The Three Little Pigs.” The nonprofit arts filmed Oct. 2, wearing a costume designed organization also partnered with Southern and created by Laura Hanson. Treating lawns during drought or dry periods
“Drought” can be a fourletter word to many lawncare enthusiasts. Homeowners who put in the hours and hard work to create beautiful, lush lawns can see the fruits of all their labor gradually disappear when drought sets in. That can be both frustrating to homeowners and detrimental to long-term lawn health. Treating lawns during drought or dry periods can be tricky, as some homeowners may be forced to adhere to water restrictions established by their local governments. Still, there are some ways to obey the law and still help lawns withstand drought and dry periods.
• Postpone fertilizer applications. Fertilizers are designed to help grass grow, but growing grass needs water it won’t have access to when water restrictions have been put in place. If a lawn needs to be fertilized during drought or dry periods, homeowners should consult with lawncare professionals, who may have experience applying fertilizer during drought. Professionals also may have access to more fertilizing products than homeowners will find at nearby lawn and garden centers. • Pull weeds by hand instead of applying herbicides. Herbicides are substances used to destroy
unwanted vegetation, such as weeds. When applied during droughts or dry periods, such products can make it harder for grass to overcome weeds. Instead of applying herbicides during drought or dry periods, pull weeds by hand. Doing so can address a weed problem without harming the grass. • Water early. Water restrictions might not completely deny homeowners the right to water their lawns. Rather, such regulations restrict how much water homeowners can use to treat their lawns during drought or dry periods. Watering early, ideally between the hours of 4 a.m. and
8 a.m., ensures as little water as possible will be lost to evaporation and as much as possible will find its way onto the grass and into the soil. During periods of drought, temperatures tend to be at their highest in mid- to late-afternoon, so change automatic sprinkler timers if they are set to water during these hours. • Adjust lawnmower blade height. Grass grows more slowly during drought or dry periods. As a result, homeowners won’t need to mow as often during such times as they would when conditions are more favorable. But lawns may still need to be mowed during drought. When mowing,
leave grass on the longer side. Mowing stresses grass, which is already under considerable stress during drought. By setting mower blades to cut no more than onethird of the leaf blade at a time, homeowners can encourage roots to grow deeper. Deep roots help the grass combat the effects of drought. Drought and dry periods need not ruin homeowners’ lush lawns. But lawn care enthusiasts will have to alter their lawn care routines when conditions are dry.

The choice for staying put or moving on
Many home improvement television series showcase people deciding whether to improve upon their current homes to make them into the houses of their dreams or to put “for sale” signs in their lawns and move on to something new. The question of whether to move or stay put depends on various factors. Such factors may include emotional attachment to a home, the current economic climate and the cost of real estate. Current data points to a greater propensity for people to invest and improve upon their current properties rather than trading up for something new. According to information collected by John Burns Real Estate Consulting, the percentage of homeowners moving up to their next home is the lowest in 25 years. Many are opting to make starter homes permanent by expanding them and repairing homes for the long haul. The National Association of Realtors said that, between 1987 and 2008, home buyers stayed in their homes an average of six years before selling. Since 2010, however, NAR says the average expected length of time people will stay in their homes before selling is now 15 years. Part of what’s fueling this permanency is that many home buyers were able to acquire rockbottom mortgage interest rates shortly after the 2008 recession. As a result, they’re not inclined to walk away from those rates, even if doing so means getting more house. Also, a low inventory of available houses has stymied repeat buying for many people. Those factors and others have led many homeowners to invest in renovations instead. The experts at Bankrate say realistic budgeting and comparing renovation project costs against mortgages and interests rates can further help individuals decide whether to remain in their current homes or move out. Very often a smarter layout and more efficient floor plan can make meaningful differences in spaces. Renovations and redesigns can make sense and often are less expensive and disruptive than moving.

Weather is often the first indicator that the seasons are changing. For many people across the globe, the hot days of summer will soon be giving way to the more crisp days of fall. For those who live in regions where summer only subtly gives way to fall or is seemingly gone before the end of August, the 2019 autumnal equinox occurs on September 23. That marks the official beginning of fall, also known as autumn. In fact, that the season the follows summer seemingly goes by two different names is just one of many interesting facts about fall. • A season by any other name … Fall is the term most often used to reference the season succeeding summer in the United States. But the season is referred to as “autumn” in other parts of the world, including Great Britain. Fall was once even known as “harvest” because of the harvest moon, which appears close to the autumnal equinox. • The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present yearround. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow
are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear. • Squirrels have a (sophisticated) plan out there. Squirrels hiding food in autumn for the upcoming winter is a familiar sight. And squirrels are more organized than many people may know. Groundbreaking research released in 1991 found that, even when squirrels bury that stash of nuts closely to one another, they will each return to the precise location of their personal cache. Recent research also has shown that squirrels bury their stash based on certain traits, such as the type of nut being buried. • Babies born in fall are more likely to see the century mark. Researchers at the University of Chicago studied more than 1,500 centenarians born in the United States between 1880 and 1895. They then compared birth and death information with those centenarians’ siblings and spouses so they could compare their early environment and genetic background and their adult environment. Their research found that most centenarians were born between September and November.

Gourds, squashes and pumpkins, oh my!
Halloween takes place during a time of year characterized by earthen-colored chrysanthemums, leaf-lined walkways and crisp autumn air. As colorful as the costumes children wear for trickor-treating may be, nature’s beauty is unsurpassed this time of year, and the scores of pumpkins, gourds and squashes on display only add to that colorful melange. The Cucurbitaceae family may be best known for pumpkins, squash and gourds, but there actually are 800 species that belong to this family. While they share many of the same properties, these fruits each have their own unique attributes. The main differences between squashes, gourds and pumpkins is their intended purposes — whether they’re ornamental or edible. Squash Squashes come in summer and winter varieties. Winter ones do not actually grow in the winter; in fact, they’re harvested in late summer and early fall, but the name references the hard shell casing that protects the tender pulp inside. Zucchini are summer squash because their outer flesh is tender, while butternut, acorn, spaghetti, and hubbard squashes are winter squashes because they feature a tough skin. Even though it takes some effort to crack that shell, the dense, nutrient-rich flesh inside is well worth the workout. Gourds Gourds are essentially ornamental squashes; they aren’t cultivated for eating. Instead they are bred to look beautiful and unique in autumn centerpieces. Types of gourds include autumn wing gourd, warted gourds, turban gourds, and bottle gourds. Each gourd is unique in its shape and color. Pumpkins Pumpkins come in ornamental and edible varieties. Even though all pumpkins can be consumed, some taste better than others. Small pumpkins tend to be decorative because, according to Nutritious Life, they do not have enough meat inside to make them worthy of cooking. However, sugar pumpkins are best for baking and cooking favorite recipes, states the resource Pumpkin Nook. The festive hues and flavors of squashes, gourds and pumpkins are one more thing that makes Halloween and autumn special.

Simple, inexpensive staging strategies
Staging has long been part of selling a home, and for good reason. When selling a home, it makes sense for sellers to make their homes as appealing as possible, even if a recent study indicates that staging may not compel buyers to offer more money. Researchers at Old Dominion University and Johns Hopkins University found that staging did not have a significant effect on the actual revealed market value of a property. However, homeowners should not interpret that as a reason to skip staging. In fact, the study’s authors note that staging
gave buyers more favorable impressions of a property, which might accelerate the selling process. Staging a home need not be difficult. In fact, homeowners can employ several simple and inexpensive staging strategies to entice buyers to make offers on their homes. • Clear out the clutter, especially in bathrooms and closets. Clear out the clutter in each room in the house before hosting an open house. Note that it’s not just bedrooms and living rooms that should be made to look open, spacious and clutter-
free. A luxurious, hotel-quality b a t h ro o m t h a t ’ s o p e n a n d airy can impress buyers, as can organized closets that are not jam packed with clothing, shoes and other wardrobe items that have a tendency to take over closets the longer someone lives in a home. • Let the sun shine in. A home that’s bright and airy tends to appear more spacious and livable than one in which the windows and blinds are closed. Before hosting an open house, open the blinds and crack some windows if the weather permits. • Start right inside the front door. A welcoming, clutter-
free foyer or primary entryway makes a strong first impression, immediately giving buyers an idea of what it will be like to welcome their own friends and family into a home should they buy it. If you hang your coats on a coat rack in a foyer or entryway that does not have a closet, remove the coat rack before hosting an open house. Coat racks can make the space feel cramped. If there’s room, place a small table and bench just inside the door. • Take care of the yard. You only get one chance to make a first impression, and the first thing buyers will see when they pull up
outside your house is the exterior of your home. Landscaping is important, and a well-maintained yard suggests to buyers that owners have taken pride in their homes, and that may extend inside the home. Make sure the grass is freshly cut, shrubs and trees have been trimmed, bald spots in the lawn have been addressed, and exterior living spaces have been cleaned and cleared of clutter. Staging a home sounds complicated. But there are various simple and inexpensive ways to make a home more attractive to prospective buyers.

“The Three Little Pigs” sets designed by Roger Speidel. (For The Edge)
On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, October 8, 2020 • 19 further the enjoyment and engagement of our youngest audience members, while also providing field experience and opportunity for the music education majors at SIUE. OE invites students, teachers, kids and families to join for this “virtual field trip” to the opera, free of charge. “The Three Little Pigs: An Opera for Kids” will feature SIUE student performers. Created especially for the enjoyment of children, in this adaptation the magic of opera meets the music of Mozart. “The Three Little Pigs: An Opera for Kids” is generously sponsored by the Edwardsville Rotary Club and presented in partnership with Once Films, The Wildey Theatre, the Edwardsville Public Library, Edwardsville Arts Center, SIUE Arts and Issues, the Edwardsville Childrens Museum and the St. Louis City Museum. “It has been a joy to work with the talented students of SIUE, who will perform as the cast of ‘The Three Little Pigs,’” Hopkins said. “I am so grateful to be working with Dr. Marc Schapman, one of SIUE’s professors of voice, who has been instrumental in this project’s success. “We have also had the joy of working with Roger Speidel to design adorable set pieces for this filmed opera, and Laura Hanson, who has designed and created costumes for the little piggies and big bad wolf. It’s a fabulous team, and I can’t wait to see the finished production!” Audiences may recognize some of the sets, as Opera Edwardsville has designed this program with a special tie into the community, honoring its partnership with the Edwardsville
Public Library. “In 2019, when we hoped to present ‘Pinocchio,’ it was through the help and support of Jill Schardt and the Edwardsville Public Library that we were able to present a free public performance for the community,” Hopkins recalled. “Following overwhelming registration for the event, The Wildey Theatre saved the day by offering to host the performance at the theater instead of the library, which, with so many attending, would have been a tight squeeze. This year, for our version of ‘The Three Little Pigs,’ it is the piggy who goes to the library and reads, who knows how best to build a strong house of bricks. Reading is fundamental.” Of course, no public gathering is possible for a live performance yet. “So we are thrilled to be filming this opera for kids, and presenting for free online,” Hopkins said. “I am especially grateful to be partnered with Once Films and Chris Ryan, who will help to transform Opera Edwardsville from the stage to the screen.” To create this two-piece virtual season, Opera Edwardsville’s partnership with the video production company was crucial. Once Films’ noteworthy projects include for the Gateway Arch, The Muny, Forest Park and Jazz St. Louis, among others. The performances will be hosted at the Opera Edwardsville website www.operaedwardsville.org and shared by the group of presenting partners. In December, Opera Edwardsville will present its third annual “Christmas at the Wildey” as a very special holiday broadcast from The Wildey,

with the broadcast’s film to premiere Friday, Dec. 18. Ticket information will be announced for the concert of holiday classics and festive carols performed by the world-class talent of Opera Edwardsville musicians. “Christmas at the Wildey: A Special Holiday Broadcast” is presented in partnership with the historic Wildey Theatre and Once Films, broadcast from The Wildey stage, featuring Opera Edwardsville favorites performing alongside Grammy winner and OE Artistic Advisor Christine Brewer. The sounds of the season meet the spirit of the holiday in this concert, sponsored by Stifel and LewisRice, who have joined as official 2020 sponsors. “Both have been with us since the beginning, and I’m so appreciative for their continued support,” Hopkins said. “I am exceptionally grateful for everyone’s continued support, and hope you all will enjoy these performances as part of your home schooling or holiday gathering. We recognize that arts programs in schools are almost non-existent as schools try to face safety and budgetary concerns. It scares me to imagine the loss of arts programs in schools, which has made me work even harder to ensure we find a creative way to present these performances online. Sponsoring OE’s educational activities, the Edwardsville Rotary Club made a bold three-year commitment. “I am exceptionally grateful to the club,” Hopkins said. “It is through the support and vision of these community leaders that a start-up arts organization can actualize its hopeful impact for the community. To my knowledge, this
is one of the first multi-year event/ activity-based grants the Edwardsville Rotary Club has offered, and I am exceedingly grateful to be able to support arts education at both the elementary and university level through this funding. We are lucky to have the Edwardsville Rotary’s commitment to the community and support for the arts.” In light of the global pandemic, Opera Edwardsville made the decision to cancel the originally planned September and December concerts due to theater capacity restrictions, limitations for international travel (affecting several performers), and for the health and safety of all artists and audiences, but that didn’t mean foregoing its original signature event “Christmas at The Wildey.” “I don’t know about you, but I’m sad to imagine a covid Christmas, especially the potential loss of Christmas carols and the music!” Hopkins noted. “When thinking about what could be done, I was inspired by the nostalgia of ‘Christmas past’ and the idea of a Christmas broadcast — I’m picturing the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, or Christmas at the Lincoln Center. ”It’s going to be a BYOC event — bring your own champagne — and I hope everyone will be ready to pop a bottle for our signature encore of the Champagne Trio.” While challenges are many, Hopkins also recognized a silver lining to this pandemic period. “Wonderful partnerships have come out of the necessity to innovate,” he said. “I’m excited about these new partnerships with many possibilities for continued collaboration moving forward. “The canceled programs are a

huge disappointment considering the immense talent that was scheduled to join us on the stage of the historic Wildey Theatre, but we are excited to put forth our virtual season and digital performances. This is a challenging time for all, and the arts are experiencing an existential threat to programs in schools, and dark theaters for the foreseeable future. “So I am grateful that Opera Edwardsville has been able to form meaningful relationships with many of the existing community organizations,” Hopkins said. “I consider it a great honor to be working with these community partners. Now, more than ever, is the time for organizations to find new and innovative ways to support one another. We hope audiences and previous sponsors will consider making a donation to support Opera Edwardsville’s continued impact on the community through these digital plans.” Donations directly support OE’s bold and innovative plans created in response to the global pandemic, and its ability to continue serving the community through education programming and (new) virtual concerts. With Halloween creeping up on us, I got to thinking about how to make the day fun, or different, in this strange and crazy year of 2020. With Halloween parades cancelled, trickor-treating redesigned, and parties not exactly the social distancing thing to do, we are left with making the holidays special on a whole new set of terms. My thoughts drifted to a movie, “Fright Night,” and I started thinking about scary movies that would lend themselves to a themed menu or maybe drinks for the evening — one that had food or cocktails that stood out in some way. One that came to mind was “Rosemary’s Baby.” Filmed in 1968, this was a rated R movie that was creepy, chilling and would definitely qualify as a thriller, even by today’s standards, though some of the scariest parts were a little less “in your face” than current films. Much of it was shrouded in mystery and

22 • Thursday, October 8, 2020 • On the Edge of the Weekend it then as a summer cocktail, which it certainly could be, but I think it’s even more suitable for watching horror movies on Halloween. Of course, the storyline goes on. Sometime after having a horrible nightmare, Rosemary discovers she’s pregnant, and the mystery really begins. Who can she trust? Is she Vicki losing her mind? Bennington Are there evil forces at work? I’ll leave it to you to watch and find out what happens, while sipping your Vodka Blush. An additional bit of food for thought: Gordon won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Minnie, and Roman Polanski, who wrote and directed the film, received an Academy Award nomi-
nation for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. The movie is based on the 1967 novel of the same name. So … here it is: a pretty, pink, refreshing and tasty cocktail that’s perfect for fright night. And it’s always nice to have a little anecdote that you can tell your guests (or family members) about the concoction you are serving. Don’t worry, it wasn’t part of the plot’s sinister seduction of Rosemary. It just happened to be the Castevets’ favorite drink. Roman’s comment about Australia wasn’t true — the drink didn’t come from “down under”, but was created especially for the novel, then used in the original film. Why did the author, Ira Levin, create it? Was there a history behind that? That sounds like the basis for a little more research. Meanwhile, bottoms up! And if
you really want to honor the “Rosemary’s Baby” background, spill a little on the carpet like Roman did. Maybe it’s good luck. Vodka Blush (makes one cocktail) 2-1/2 ounces of vodka 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice (I used bottled lime juice) 1 dash grenadine (just enough to make it pale pink) Ice Rosemary sprigs (how appropriate) for garnish Note: Another exciting thing for me with this drink is that this year, for the first time, I grew my own rosemary. I picked this particular herb because of its fragrant properties. I love the smell. Then along comes this recipe, and I was actually able to use fresh rosemary, picked from my own backyard. Mix first three ingredients in a shaker full of ice, garnish with rose-
mary and serve. The drink is best served in a champagne glass, as that’s how
Roman chooses to serve it in the film. And it looks so pretty!

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge EDWARDSVILLE — My return to the cinema has been far less triumphant than I’d anticipated after my months-long layoff this summer. “New Mutants” was a sparsely attended dud and my next two trips (to see the over-hyped “Tenet” and the low-balled “The Broken Heart Gallery”) were empty save for myself. I missed the movie theaters. Turns out I miss the communal nature of going to the movies, too. It’s hard to commune with anyone, even shushed strangers, when you’re in an enormous room — by yourself. With my preferred matinees no longer being scheduled — almost
‘Irresistible,’ not quite
certainly in a bid to avoid further financial hardship — and last night’s Cardinals playoff game running long and late, I decided to take the opportunity to do something I’ve consciously avoided so far. I made my first attempt at streaming through AMC’s On Demand service. It’s a mixed bag. The service itself is straightforward enough. There’s the usual easily navigable online shopping portals. AMC added the technology of tying into my Stubs A-List account, a feature I’d equate to Amazon Prime. For prices ranging from $4.99 members can create a profile, peruse a library of titles, and choose to rent or own a title outright. I had intended all along to watch “Irresistible,” Jon Stewart’s political satire that tiptoed out of theaters during the pandemic shutdown.
But I got distracted by the variety of unrelated options to choose from. AMC’s library is both vast and twisted. There are enough recent titles to be relevant, but featured options were strangely paired. One screen offered me 1992’s “Ferngully: The Last Rainforest” and another screen offered straight-to-video action titles that I didn’t want to watch when they came out a few years ago, like, 2017’s “The Wall” with John Cena. I looked around a little while (mostly to fill this paragraph with content). Then, like most men do when they go shopping, I bought what I’d come in for, at the price it was offered, and left the store. “Irresistible,” it was, especially for me. I like Stewart for his politics and humor, and I love Steve Carell. I’m pleased that my oldest niece is now
discovering “The Office.” Carell’s co-star, Rose Byrne, is always fun to watch. In “Irresistible” the two leads, who play longtime nemeses, are political operatives who find themselves paired up, again, for a mysterious purposeful mayoral race in a small Wisconsin town, where they have no connections. Gary Zimmer (Carell) is there to run a candidate he thinks might make the region a Democratic stronghold for years to come. Col. Jack Hastings (Chris Cooper) is a small-town conservative with the attitude of a liberal. Zimmer goes after him so hard that it draws attention to finances from the Republican National Committee and the ire of Byrne’s character, Faith Brewster. “Irresistible,” it also is not. It’s dry and plodding. The fish-out-of-
water jokes are as stale as they are in most political comedies, including the lone memorable scene when Zimmer, intoxicated by local baked goods, gets his face licked clean by Faith. The script also illustrates a parable. I felt a little insulted by the movie’s hidden-agenda secret ending. Now I realize that was on purpose. Mackenzie Davis plays Hastings’ daughter, a too-clever civic booster who hides a lot from Zimmer. Too bad she’s just as unlikable as the overall movie. Let’s just get more episodes of “Veep.” “Irresistible” runs 102 minutes and is rated R for language including sexual references. I give this film one star out of four.
