Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Junior Service Club Holiday House Tour Transitions to Virtual

For The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — This year’s Junior Service Club (JSC) Holiday House Tour will be bigger and better than ever while also accommodating social distancing measures of the participants. The highly anticipated, bi-annual event will showcase 14 festively decorated houses, and ticketholders will be able to access the tour virtually from the comfort and safety of their own homes from Dec. 13 until Dec. 18. This year, the tour can be viewed multiple times and at the convenience of the ticket holder’s schedule during the event dates. Planning for a virtual format started early with safety being a priority for the holiday house tour’s homeowners and ticketholders. Because many nonprofit organizations benefit from the grant money raised by JSC each year, cancelling the holiday house tour was not an option. Going virtual does have benefits, including no restrictions on where ticketholders live or age restrictions. This year, children may also enjoy the virtual format and look for “Junior” – a gnome hidden in each home on the tour. More homes have also been added to the tour, doubling the size from previous years. No matter if there is sleet or snow, ticketholders can enjoy the tour and won’t have to worry about inclement weather! Leslie DeVary, JSC board member and co-chair of the 2020 Holiday House Tour, is happy the event is able to continue. “This year has been like no other in our lifetime. The Junior Service Club is seizing the opportunity to upgrade the Holiday House Tour experience to include the entire family, offer contactless delivery of holiday cheer, provide increased exposure for our sponsors and highlight many of the organizations our fundraising directly benefits. We have to continue focusing on the good things that are happening, and the holidays are the perfect time to renew our spirit.” Tickets cost $30 and may be purchased online at the Junior Service Club website at www.edglenjuniorservice.org/holidayhouse-tour-2020.html. Any tickets purchased before Dec. 1, will be eligible for a gift of “holiday cheer” delivered to your

doorstep by one of the many Junior Service Club elves on Dec. 13. This offer is limited to the first 1,000 ticketholders (must be in a 10-mile radius of Edwardsville High School). All ticketholders will also be eligible for a “12 Days of Giveaways” drawing that will be held daily beginning on Dec. 1, with prizes valued at $100 donated from local businesses. The 2020 Holiday House Tour would not be possible without presenting sponsor, Country Financial and videographer, Chris Vandehey of Connect Video. Other sponsors instrumental in the success of the Holiday House Tour include Spencer Homes, Julie Reinecke Designs, EXO, Tara Riggs RE/MAX Alliance, Edwardsville Bank, BauerHite Orthodontics, Sunflower Dental, Bank of Springfield, The Spa at MidAmerica, Brinley Orthodontics, Butler Marcus Group with RE/MAX Alliance, The Garden Kingdom, White Cliff Studio, and Julie Fleck, Realtor. We also thank the many local businesses that donated to the “12 Days of Giveaways.” The Edwardsville-Glen Carbon Junior Service Club aspires to develop lasting, community partnerships and friendships as agents of change. Money raised by the JSC goes back into the community. With a diverse membership, the organization is united by a desire to be a positive influence in the local community and beyond. To learn more about the organization, this year’s Holiday House Tour, or other businesses that the JSC supports, visit www.edglenjuniorservice.org.

Don’t miss a beat during a power outage

For Home & Lifestyles Short-term power outages can be a minor inconvenience. A long-term power outage can cause a major disruption to daily life. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Annual Electric Power Industry Report says interruptions in electric service vary by frequency and duration across the many electric distribution systems that serve the country. In 2016, the most recent year for data, customers experienced an average of 1.3 interruptions and went without power for around four hours. When a storm strikes or an accident knocks out electric power lines or other infrastructure, it may take much longer for power to be restored. During Superstorm Sandy in 2012, more than eight million people lost power and outages lasted for days in some major cities. Outlying areas were without power for weeks, according to National Geographic. It’s important to know how to handle a power outage to keep everyone safe and comfortable until power can be restored.

Invest in a generator If you live in an area that is affected by frequent power outages, a power generator may prove a worthwhile investment. Generators come in two basic types. A portable generator can be rolled into place and uses gasoline as fuel. Plug in a set number of household items, depending on the amount of power the appliance can accommodate. A wholehouse generator can be hard-wired to a home’s electrical system and automatically engage should a power outage occur. Prepare in advance In anticipation of a power outage, stock up on batterypowered devices like flashlights, lanterns and radios. Charge mobile phones and other devices so they’re at 100 percent power. Keep a cache of nonperishable food available and plan to use any perishable items that are in the refrigerator first. A refrigerator can keep food cold for about four hours after power has ceased, states Ready.gov, while a freezer can keep

the temperature for about 48 hours if full. Packing these appliances with ice or frozen bottles of water can help. Purchase books, board games and puzzles to have activities to pass the time until power resumes. During a power outage Report the power outage to the power company if it seems localized; otherwise, wait for updates to see who is affected. Try to remain cool or warm if the HVAC system is not functioning. Pool resources by having everyone in the family gather in one room of the house. Older adults and children are especially vulnerable to extreme temperatures. Maintain food supplies that do not require refrigeration, including two gallons of bottled water per individual. People who take refrigerated medications should only ingest drugs that have been at room temperature until a new supply is available, advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Power outages routinely occur and require planning and safety precautions until power is restored.

Holiday hosting in small spaces

Gatherings of family and friends are a big part of the holiday season. Hosting such gatherings can be a great way to show loved ones how much you appreciate them, and hosting also saves hosts the trouble of traveling during one of the most hectic travel seasons of the year. When hosting a large crowd at home, space can be a difficult hurdle to clear. However, a few helpful strategies can help space-starved hosts pull off a holiday soiree where everyone is comfortable. • Pare down the menu. Holiday feasts don’t have to resemble medieval banquets with excessive amounts of food and drink. Hosts with small kitchens and tiny dining quarters can pare down the menu, limiting offerings to just a single entree and a few simple side dishes, so everyone feels comfortable at the table and has ample room to eat. A small menu also gives hosts more time to spend with their loved ones during the festivities. • Don’t overdo it on drinks, either. When planning the drinks menu, avoid offering cocktails, which take time to prepare and often require guests to visit the kitchen for refrigerated ingredients. Limit drinks to wine, beer, water, and soft drinks, storing cold beverages in a cooler kept outside on a front or back porch or in an area outside the kitchen so cooks can work without interruption. • Move some furniture. If your main living space is small, consider moving some bulky furniture into a bedroom or office where guests won’t be spending time. Then make better use of the open living space by placing folding chairs or other accommodations to ensure there’s ample seating for everyone. A single recliner can only be enjoyed by one person, but removing it from a room may create enough space for as many as three folding chairs. • Go small on decorations. If you know you’ll be hosting in advance of the holiday season, decorate with guests in mind. That might mean skipping a six-foot Christmas tree in favor of one that takes up less space. Avoid leaving any fragile decorations out, as adults or overexcited kids may knock them over as they try to navigate a cramped space. Holiday hosting can be fun, even in small spaces. A few simple tricks can make even the smallest spaces accommodating.

Prepare the fireplace for holiday decorating

For Home & Lifestyles A jolly holiday season can be made even more merry with a roaring fire. Homeowners often build holiday tableaus around the fireplace to serve as festive backdrops. The mantle and the fireplace itself also may be a prime spot to dedicate to decorating this time of year. Even though Christmas tree fires are rare, according to the U.S. Fire Administration, when they do occur they’re likely to be serious. That is why

trees and other flammable decorations need to be kept clear of gas and woodburning fireplaces and stoves. In addition, many other guidelines should be heeded to ensure fireplaces and holiday decor safely coexist this season. Read labels on decorative items carefully before decorating. Be sure to only select items that are flame-resistant or retardent. Cherished collectibles and other items should always be kept far away from open flames and heat. It pays to have a fireplace inspected and cleaned for use prior to operation,

advises Doherty Insurance Agency. Rely on a trained chimney sweep, and have the fireplace and chimney inspected and cleaned at least once per year. Even though it may be picturesque, do not place wrapped packages or gift boxes near the fireplace, as they tend to be highly combustible. Keep presents and other flammable items at least three feet away from the fireplace. Do not be tempted to dispose of wrapping paper, boxes or even a Christmas tree in the fireplace. Wrapping paper contains additives that make it

burn at high temperatures. A Christmas tree hasn’t been properly seasoned and could be a fire hazard and potentially contribute to excessive smoke and creosote. Keep decorations that kids will be tempted to touch away from the fireplace so kids do not hang out near the heat and open flames. Fireplaces are often a focal point of holiday decorating and entertaining. Homeowners who want to incorporate their fireplaces into their holiday decor must emphasize safety when doing so.

Steps for hanging holiday lights outdoors

For Home & Lifestyles

It begins to look a lot like Christmas when twinkling lights brighten up homes inside and out. Few things liven up the season more than holiday decorations, particularly clear and colored lights. Prior to taking out the lights, ladder and thermos of coffee to get you through the job, it’s important to note that there are right and wrong ways to hang holiday lights. • Sketch out your plan. Start by taking a few photos of your home from various vantage points. Print out the photos on regular paper so that you can draw your lighting arrangement and decoration placement right on the photos to see how things will look. • Measure the area. Use a measuring tape to roughly measure the width and height of eaves or other areas of the home where you plan to hang light strands. Calculate how much overall footage you will need so you can purchase all of the lights in one shopping trip. • Test the lights first. Plug in the lights to be sure all strands are operational. • Begin where the lights will be plugged in. Start where the lights will be plugged in and then work yo ur w ay around the house. • Add to shrubs and trees. Lights also can adorn shrubs and trees. Lowes Home Improvement says a good rule of thumb is 100 lights for every 11⁄2-feet of tree or shrub to cover. A

6-foot evergreen needs at least 400 lights for a basic level of lighting. • Exercise extreme caution. Accidents can happen when stringing lights. While many professionals use harnesses, homeowners are not always so cautious. Utilize a spotter to hold the ladder and make sure things are safe. Never set foot on a wet or icy roof. Do not attempt to string lights in inclement weather. • Know the wattage. Each outlet can generally hold about 17 amps or 1,870 watts if the lights are not sharing a circuit with another outlet, says Parrish. Plan accordingly to ensure you have enough power to handle your lights. • Use plastic clips.

Plastic light clips hang strands along eaves and gables. They’re specially designed for hanging lights over the gutters. Some slip under the edges of roof shingles. Lights can be hung without staples or nails, which can damage exterior surfaces. Plastic zip-ties or deck clips also can attach lights along a handrail. • Use only outdoor extension cords. Be sure the extension cords you use are designed specifically for outdoor use. • Use a timer. Timers can make sure the lights turn on and off even if homeowners forget. Once lights have been safely strung, sit back and enjoy the splendor of a well-decorated house.

P n o i a t t n r e o t ns! t A Alton Little Theater will adhere to the State’s new mandated guidelines for temporary closure of designated businesses (like Theatres) and will cease all rehearsals/ production with plans in place to resume Production efforts in January. ALT will postpone the debut of SISTER ACT until January 22nd through 31st. Lee Cox, Executive Director, indicates that the entire 87th Season will be “moved forward” into previously targeted “slots’ and will be produced in the pre-planned order. Details of these shifting dates will be fully outlined on the ALT Website: http://www.altonlittletheater.org and in a mailing to all Season Ticket holders. SISTER ACT was proving to be an extremely popular choice for Theater-Lovers and Tickets were selling rapidly even through November 16th --ALL TICKET PURCHASES WILL BE HONORED and ALT’s WinTix Ticketing System, automatically moves purchases into their identical show choice ( i.e. First Friday etc.) into the next dates for the show. The Talented cast of twenty-four will continue to work individually and on zoom to hone their skills until rehearsals can begin again. ALT will also be moving “Seasons of Love” - (Gourmet Dinner and Small Fundraising Gala) from December 13th to February 14th -- yes a Valentine Dinner & Entertainment Full of “extra Love!” Tickets for all ALT’s productions are still on sale online and through the box office; a reduced crew of Production Staff will remain on site for several hours each day (excluding the Thanksgiving long weekend November 25th through 29th. Additional questions will be answered through 618-462-3205. The Board of Directors at ALT under the direction of Lief Anderson anticipated and planned for this “shift” in scheduling, having closely monitored the rising COVID-related health concerns in the Riverbend Region. The Theater has worked long and hard to formulate a good relationship with Civic leaders, local police departments and Business owners ---And Lee Cox, Executive Director and Kevin Frakes, Artistic Director will continue to work with local leaders in rebuilding all Arts & Theater programming , once the COVID numbers have sufficiently decreased to a more manageable level.

So never fear --you will soon be hearing about the excitement and magic at YOUR Community Theater!

Identify winter birds in backyards Birds flittering around the neighborhood are a common sight during spring and summer, and these welcome guests can be enjoyable to observe as they nest, feed and interact. When the weather cools in fall and winter, many birds seek out warmer climates, but a good number of these feathered friends stick around. Certain birds can be found all winter long across regions of North America. The Great American Bird Count is a program that is run by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. Its purpose is to seek the help of volunteer birdwatchers across North America to observe and count all the birds seen in a 15-minute interval during a four-day data collection period. This program helps identify birds that are most commonly seen in cold temperatures and study the composition and

distribution of the winter bird populations across North America. Birds seen during this time may change from year to year, though certain species are more likely to be around in the winter months. • Northern cardinals: One of the more iconic winter birds, the bright red cardinals are around much of the year but perhaps most noticeable against the snowy, stark landscape of a winter’s day. Cardinals use their bright, powerful bills to crack open seeds and cut through sugary fruits to help them survive the winter. • Tree sparrows: Tree sparrows are largebodied and long-tailed sparrows with gray and reddish-brown streaking along the edges of their feathers. They also wear a bright chestnut colored cap. Despite their name, tree sparrows spend much of their time on the ground feeding. The bird count

has unveiled a greater number of tree swallows in recent years. These birds are insectivorous, so milder winters may be contributing to their increased presence. • Tufted titmice: Tufted titmice resemble cardinals in body and head shape, albeit on a smaller scale, but they are pale gray in coloring. These are bold birds who defend territory with scolding calls. • Blue jays: These common, vibrant birds are well known to many people. They are large-crested songbirds with broad, round tails. They have white or light gray feathering on the underside of their bodies with various shades of blue, black and white on the top. A favorite food is acorns, and these birds are often found on forest edges. Their calls are loud and carry long distances. • Mourning doves: Many people hear mourning doves before they actually see

them, as their soft cooing often comes from roof rafters and tree branches. These birds have plump bodies and long, tapered necks, with a head that looks particularly small in comparison. They tend to be brown to buff color. When the birds take off for flight, their wings make sharp whistling or whinnying sounds. • American goldfinches: These birds are sometimes called the “wild canary” of the Americas. They have distinctive yellow plumage that fades in winter to a palette of buff, brown and gray. They’re small seedeating birds that often travel in flocks. Birds may need a little help surviving in the winter. Keep fresh, unfrozen water around and supplement food scavenged with peanut butter, suet and nuts. Brush piles, roost boxes or birdhouses can provide needed shelter.

The many benefits of houseplants

The lines between the outdoors and indoors are being blurred. Homeowners build extensive outdoor living spaces so they can relax on weather-resistant furniture and even cook in lavish kitchens in their backyards. In addition, indoor threeseason rooms full of bright, open windows that showcase outdoor vistas challenge the boundaries between outside and inside. For those working with limited budgets, there are some easy, inexpensive ways to enjoy the majesty of natural landscapes indoors. Houseplants can be used to improve indoor spaces, and they also provide various health benefits. Help with allergies According to WebMD, rooms with houseplants tend to have less dust and mold in them than those without any foliage. Leaves

and other parts of the plants serve as natural filters, catching airborne particles and allergens. Plants with textured leaves might be especially effective at trapping particles. Put more oxygen into the air The human respiratory system works by bringing in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. Plants do the opposite during photosynthesis. They absorb carbon dioxide and then release oxygen. Plants can put much more oxygen into the air, improving indoor conditions. Increase indoor humidity and reduce illness Studies from the Agricultural University of Norway found that indoor plants can increase humidity in indoor spaces, which decreases the incidences of sore throats, dry coughs, dry skin, and the common cold.

Higher absolute humidity can decrease the chances of survival and transmission of the flu virus. Filter the air Researchers who presented their work at the 252nd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society found certain houseplants can combat the potentially harmful effects of volatile organic compounds. Plants may help filter out VOCs like benzene, acetone and formaldehyde, which can enter indoor air via cleaning supplies, dry-cleaned clothes, furniture, printers, and paints. Improve interior atmosphere Prevention magazine says plants can be used to screen unattractive areas, moderate room temperature by shading spots from the sun and even reduce noise. Plants also

can improve ambiance and create a pleasing atmosphere in a room. Can improve mood Growing and caring for plants can alleviate everyday stress. A nationwide study from UK Magazine Gardeners World found 80 percent of gardeners declared themselves satisfied with life compared to 67 percent among non-gardeners. Gardeners were more positive mentally. Greenery can help people feel more at home and improve mental health. A rehab center in Norway found patients reported a greater increase in well-being four weeks after having greenery added to their surroundings. Houseplants can improve indoor areas and positively affect personal health.

NEW YORK — “Jeopardy!” record-holder Ken Jennings will be the first in a series of interim hosts replacing Alex Trebek when the show resumes production next Monday. Producers announced Monday that Jennings, who won 74 games in a row and claimed the show’s “Greatest of All Time” title in a competition last year, will host episodes that air in January. A long-term host to replace Trebek, who died of cancer on Nov. 8, will be named later. “By bringing in familiar guest hosts for the foreseeable future, our goal is to create a sense of community and continuity for our viewers,” the show’s executive producer, Mike Richards, said. The show is in its 37th year of syndication. It is still airing shows that Trebek filmed before his death. Art Fleming hosted earlier editions of the game show, including the original “Jeopardy!” that debuted in 1964 on NBC and aired for a decade. Richards said “Jeopardy!” will air repeat episodes for the holiday weeks beginning Dec. 21 and 28, meaning Trebek’s final week of shows will air starting Monday, Jan. 4. Jennings’ episodes begin on Jan. 11.

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, December 3, 2020 • 21 He said he couldn’t really tell it was a marshmallow. That’s because it melts and totally disappears, thus the name Hocus-Pocus Rolls. I will say that they were very sticky — on the cookie sheet, the plate and even your hand — but that was a small price to pay for the flavor. I have heard that some people mix butter and powdered sugar and drizzle over the top while the rolls are still hot. I did not try that, but maybe next time. This is an easy recipe that would be a good one for children to help with. The rolls make a great treat for breakfast, a dessert for any meal, as a snack, or as part of a sweet or buffet table setting. Try them for one of your holiday celebrations — no matter what size your gathering ends up being this year. The rolls are really quite versatile — and dare I say — magical.

Hocus-Pocus Rolls 16 large marshmallows 1/4 cup melted butter 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 cup sugar 2 packages Pillsbury crescent rolls Break open the crescent roll package and tear apart rolls, laying each one flat on a cookie sheet. In a bowl, melt butter, then sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, and stir until mixed well. Roll a large marshmallow in the butter mixture, then place in crescent (at the wider end) and roll so marshmallow stays in the center. Bake at 350 F for 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. In this column, Vicki Bennington shares her love of food and all that involves, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants to new trends and fads, and things to try at home. Contact her at vbennington@sbcglobal.net with comments, ideas or suggestions.

‘Dry as a 300-year-old oil painting’

You didn’t miss anything by missing ‘Last Vermeer’ By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — Well, it happened again. The movie theater in Edwardsville was shuttered a couple weeks ago by mandate. Masks and social distancing weren’t enough to stop the rise of COVID-19 cases during this pandemic. I’m disappointed, absolutely, but I will quietly comply in the absence of another remedy. Various counties in Missouri had not followed suit at the time of this writing, and select locations were still operating in St. Louis city and county, including the Esquire. The Esquire is the closest movie theater to Edwardsville at 25.3 miles, in Clayton. Ever been? It’s a glorious old movie house that first opened in 1939. The Esquire has gone through many renovations over the years, but I heard an oft-repeated story at one of its gala re-openings, in 2014, that it was the oldest theater west of the Mississippi River for continuously screening first-run titles. That’s an amazing fact that I wouldn’t dream of trying to corroborate. Shortly after I heard that story for the umpteenth time, we were herded in to watch an early release of Jake Gyllenhaal’s new movie at the time, “Nightcrawler.” Of course, going to the Esquire is an even better option since the theater count in our market has decreased by one. A few weeks ago, AMC shuttered the West Olive 16 in Creve Coeur. It had operated since 1997 as the first “megaplex” in the greater St. Louis area and was retrofitted in 2012 to feature the dine-in luxury concept. Press releases indicated this particular movie theater was dictated by lease obligations and that COVID-19 didn’t help. I made it a point to be present at West Olive 16’s last night of operation and re-watched “American Sniper,” which held up better than I thought it would. But I did get an opportunity to see a movie at a theater before the closures came back. “The Last Vermeer,” which debuted at the Telluride Film Festival Aug. 31, 2019, stars Guy Pearce as an ineffectual Dutch artist who’s charged with war crimes. He’s accused of brokering a Johannes Vermeer masterpiece to the Nazis during World War

II. Han van Meegeren (Pearce) is a jerk, but his trial during rebuilding from the war is a big deal to the people in Amsterdam. Captain Joseph Piller (Claes Bang), an officer charged with defending van Meegeren, at first finds that he can’t stand to be around the man. But they quickly learn they need

each other. Piller’s assistant is played by Vicky Krieps from “Phantom Thread.” For one tedious hour, nothing happens. And then the defense suggests something radical: van Meegeren didn’t sell “Christ and the Adulteress” to Hermann Göring, one of the most powerful figures in the Nazi Party. Instead, the defense says van Meegeren produced a forgery, sticking it to the enemy that way. It’s not the first time a person has pled guilty to a lesser crime in order to get off the hook, but in this case it made van Meegeren a national hero, giving him the legacy of history’s greatest art forger. He died shortly

after his exoneration. The last two months was a hot streak at the movies. Everything I chose to see had been a winner, and I was wondering if my theory about quality of films in the absence of quantity was a moment of true clairvoyance. Turns out, it was just luck. While “The Last Vermeer” is sturdily made and makes the most of its big finish, it’s still just as dry as a 300-year-old oil painting. “The Last Vermeer” runs 117 minutes and is rated R for language, violence and nudity. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Art world star gives back by buying work of the undiscovered

By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Painter Guy Stanley Philoche, a star in the New York art world, had wanted to treat himself to a fancy watch after a hugely successful gallery show. Then the pandemic hit, and he feared for all the struggling artists who haven’t been so lucky. So he gave up his $15,000 Rolex dreams and went on a different kind of buying spree, putting out a call on Instagram in late March to any artist anywhere who had creations to sell. The submissions rolled in, hundreds at a time. He’s spent about $60,000 so far with plans to continue as long as he can, and Philoche’s own patrons have taken notice and asked him to make purchases on their behalf, as well. “It’s about artists helping artists,” said the 43-year-old Philoche, who came to America from Haiti with his family at age 3, nearly nothing to their names. “I’m not a rich man,” he said, “but I owe a big debt to the art world. Art saved my life, and I made a promise to myself that once I made it, to always buy from artists who hadn’t gotten their big break.” Philoche has a budget, seeking out works in the $300 to $500 range. He buys only what he loves, from as far away as London and as close as the studio next to his in East Harlem. An abstract mixed-media piece by Michael Shannon, his studio neighbor, was his first purchase, leading Philoche to include him and others he’s discovered in an upcoming group gallery show. About half the artists Philoche has chosen are people he knows, many in New York. The others sent him direct messages on Instagram with sample work in hopes of being picked. Philoche, who went to art school in Connecticut where his family settled, has lined the walls of his tiny apartment with his Philoche Collection During Covid, ranging from graffitiinspired work and portraiture to pop art and a huge pistol done in bright yellow, red and blue paint. Philoche’s own work goes for up to $125,000 a piece. During a recent interview at his studio, he slid out from storage large canvases from his breakthrough, Mark Rothko-esque abstract Untitled Series and a collection of female nudes with duct tape over their mouths. Often whimsical, he has also produced paintings inspired by Monopoly and other board games, as well as comics such as Charlie Brown. Among his clients: Deutsche Bank, Merrill Lynch and Barclay Investments Inc., along with Uma Thurman, George Clooney and fellow artist Julian Schnabel.

Giving back isn’t something the affable Philoche just recently decided to do. Over his 20-plus year career, he has tried to stick to a simple rule to support other artists: Sell a painting, buy a painting. But it was a chance meeting with a friend and fellow artist who was anxious about the pandemic with a baby on the way that set him on his pandemic buying spree. “I’m not on the first line, but my community was impacted, as well,” he said. “It was just the right thing to do. I love waking up in my apartment every morning seeing the walls. There’s paintings on the floor, all over. Some of these people have never sold a painting in their life.” His feisty French bulldog Picasso at his side, Philoche recalled his own meager start in New York after he put himself through art school while working full-time as a bartender. “People didn’t open the doors for me. I had to get into the room through the back door, or through the window,” he said with a laugh. “But now that I’m in the room, with a seat at the table, I have to open doors for these artists.”
