EDWARDSVILLE — Bella Milano is known for exceptional Italian cuisine, so it’s no surprise the restaurant garnered the most overall votes from the community in the Best of The Best of Madison County and Riverbend — also winning in the Best Italian Restaurant category — powered by On The Edge of The Weekend, The Intelligencer and The Telegraph. Bella Milano owners Sam Guarino and Craig Kalogerou’s commitment to customer service — which includes staff, food, and product — make Bella Milano stand out in the communities in which their restaurants are located, including O’Fallon and Springfield, both in Illinois, as well as Edwardsville. Bella Milano also sponsors the Edwardsville Children’s Museum’s Bella Milano Cafe, where little ones can take their caretaker’s order, put on a chef hat and cook up a delicious meal, all while learning about healthy eating. Guarino and Bella Milano are involved in a number of different community programs, groups and events, including Hope Animal Rescue, Taste of Edwardsville and Hospice of Southern Illinois, among others. Bella Milano Edwardsville opened in 2003, offering contemporary Italian cuisine with oldworld flavor in a contemporary setting at 1063 S. State Route 157.

At the time of the restaurant’s opening, Guarino said that Bella Milano would fill a niche that previously residents of Edwardsville and Glen Carbon had to drive across the river to enjoy. Offering more dining options, at the time, motivated Guarino to open Bella Milano. Indeed, for Madison County, the restaurant has proved to be

Mother, daughter, new board spearhead effort to re-open women, children shelter

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

EDWARDSVILLE — A mother-daughter team from Edwardsville stepped up to fill a void when a Good Samaritan House shelter closed. “My daughter had a vision for this type of facility — for women and children — to empower them and give a helping hand,” Angie Miller said. “But with homelessness, it’s a whole other level.” More than a year ago, Miller’s daughter, Alex Madron, 27, began volunteering at the Good Samaritan House of Granite City. Her husband, Collinsville Police Officer Dylan Madron, suggested she volunteer at the Good Samaritan House because he knew of her desire to open a facility like this for women and children. Alex Madron formed relationships and gained insights of the needs of the women and children at Granite City’s Good Samaritan House shelter, then it closed last

spring due to lack of funds, which began Madron and Miller’s current effort to reopen the only Metro East shelter for homeless women and their children. The Good Samaritan House of Granite City is about helping women utilize resources such as Women, Infants and Children and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Madron explained. It also helps them learn life skills such as nutrition, budgeting and job interviewing, empowering them to stand on their own. “Sometimes we don’t know where to go or what to do,” said the Edwardsville High School graduate. “If you don’t know, you can’t do better. “When women come to together to help each other, powerful, massive things happen,” she said. “Everyone matters, and they have a story, and it’s important not to be judgmental but to have compassion and love each other, like Jesus loves us.”

In March, the Good Samaritan House shelter’s immediate past board of directors voted to close the Good Samaritan House, due to a lack of funding, after 20 years of serving the community. A special meeting was called as word spread of the impending closure. Madron, a Good Samaritan House volunteer at the time, learned of the meeting but couldn’t attend because she was working out of town. She asked her mother to attend in her place. No miraculous developments came from the meeting. The former group disbanded. Yet Madron couldn’t rest knowing the shelter had closed. Within six months she and Miller — along with six new board members — began efforts to reopen the Good Samaritan House of Granite City. With Madron as board president and Miller as its vice president, the seven-woman, one-man board held fundraisers; collaborated with businesses, churches and women’s groups; enlisted volunteers to

remodel and furnish rooms; and worked feverishly to open by Christmas. Though short of its monetary goal, the building is paid for and ready for occupancy with four rooms completely remodeled. Now it’s just a matter of more funding before the home at 1825 Delmar Ave. in Granite City can accept women and children in need. At an open house last weekend, Church Women United gave $1,000 toward the new board’s goal of $100,000, of which it has raised $30,000. Restaurants donated lunch, including bread from Bella Milano Edwardsville, salad from Uncle Linny’s in Granite City and paella from The Croquetterie in St. Louis. “It was a perfect opportunity to show progress,” Miller recalled. “We’re very close. We just need people to see the progress, how much has been done, see the finish line. “We helped people learn how to volunteer,” she said. “There’s opportunity to sponsor one of the rooms and see how it’s

The $100,000 goal is designed to ensure the home’s sustainability as the group seeks grants for 2021, Miller said. “The new board members all came together for the main purpose of reopening this community resource,” she said. “Every single person on this all-volunteer board — and some of their husbands, my husband, Paul — have really come together for this purpose. Talk about a group of people who roll up their sleeves — they are pretty amazing.” Miller also mentioned receiving substantial construction help from board members Dawn Whitmire’s husband, Ralph, and Christy Keehler’s husband, Bill. Miller, 50, works fulltime at Bayer Crop Science in St. Louis and can relate to the women seeking help. “There were times in my life I needed significant help from family or friends,” she said. “Now, I’ve been very fortunate in my life. Giving a little more this holiday season

The holiday season is a time of giving. The generosity on display during the holiday season may not have an official start date, but the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving Day may be the unofficial beginning of the giving season. The first Tuesday following American Thanksgiving has been referred to as “Giving Tuesday” since 2012. The event was started by the 92nd Street Y in New York City, the United Nations Foundation and the technology website Mashable as a response to the commercialization of the holiday season and the rampant consumerism that seems to start as soon as the last bite of turkey is digested. Today, Giving Tuesday harnesses the generosity of millions of people around the world and helps millions of dollars to find its way into the coffers of organizations that need it most. Giving Tuesday inspires people to volunteer or give back to causes that are near and dear to their hearts. Thanks to technology, giving has the capacity to go viral and inspire others to engage in their own charitable efforts. Since its inception, Giving Tuesday has evolved. The event now underscores how communities can

harness the power of people working together to elicit great change. Even though Giving Tuesday may be the catalyst for charitable efforts, it doesn’t need to end there. People are urged to be generous all year long, including throughout the holiday season. Here are some seasonally specific ways to give back a little more. • Pay it forward by treating someone behind you in the checkout line to coffee, fast food, a candy bar, or whatever else suits you at the time. Perhaps he or she will do the same and keep the generosity going. • Keep extra dollars in your pocket and be generous to charities seeking donations outside of stores. A cup of coffee or hot chocolate goes a long way toward warming up the people manning the collection pots as well. • Adopt a family who is less fortunate and purchase some gifts on their wish list. Many community centers and churches have contacts for needy families who could use some support this season. Giving can be the focus of the holiday season, and in ways that are meaningful to the people on the receiving end of the generosity.

How to teach kids to be philanthropic

Introducing children to charity early in their lives can lay a foundation of philanthropy that lasts a lifetime. The more kids witness charitable giving, the more likely they are to embrace charity as they grow up. Teaching children that it is better to give than to receive can be challenging, but it’s never too early to instill philanthropic feelings in a child. In order to help young children understand what it means to be charitable, try these ideas. Open a dialogue A study from the United Nations Foundation and the Women’s Philanthropy Institute at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis found simply talking to children about giving increased the likelihood that children would give by 20 percent. Being specific makes a difference in getting the message out there. For example, rather than mentioning we have to give because it makes the world a better place, explain how donating food will help feed the less fortunate who cannot afford to feed themselves. Lead by example Call the children over when you are doing something that pertains to philanthropy. Show them checks being written to help various nonprofits, or include them in outings that involve volunteer work. Look for easy ways to give

Charity doesn’t require a large amount of money or substantial effort, and starting with something simple can make for a great introduction to charity. Begin with small projects kids can embrace and understand. Spend time going through clothes that no longer fit and make a trip to a charitable clothing drive or collection bin. Bring your child to a clothing store or toy store and pick out an item that can be donated to a less fortunate child. This way he or she can participate firsthand. Help out neighbors Being charitable doesn’t have to mean spending tons of money or even putting together material things. It can involve donating time to others who may need assistance. Serviceoriented projects, such as raking leaves, baking cookies or taking in elderly neighbors’ garbage pails, are all types of charity. Children can become friendly and play with other children who may have a parent serving in the military or support someone who has special needs. Get involved with pets Animals and children seem a perfect match, and one charitable effort kids may embrace is helping animals. Bring food or pet supplies to a shelter or the local humane society. Allow children to interact with the animals they are helping. There are many ways to acclimate children to charitable living, and doing so may lay the foundation for a rewarding life.

Easy ways to volunteer and give back to your community

Millions of people across the globe volunteer every day. Without the selfless efforts of volunteers, many charities would be forced to cease operations. In fact, a 2017 study from the charitable community membership organization Independent Sector estimated that the labor provided by volunteers is worth roughly $193 billion per year in the United States alone. But volunteering can be as beneficial for volunteers as it can for the organizations they help. For example, the Mayo Clinic Health System notes that research has indicated volunteering leads to lower rates of depression while providing individuals with a sense of purpose. Volunteering can be especially beneficial for adults over age 60, with the MCHS noting that older volunteers experience greater increases in life satisfaction and greater positive changes in their perceived health as a result of volunteering.

With so much to gain from volunteering, it’s no wonder that so many people across the globe volunteer. According to the United Nations Volunteers program, global estimates place the number of worldwide volunteers at 970 million. That’s nearly three times the population of the United States and more than 26 times the population of Canada in 2018. It’s never been easier to volunteer and begin helping your community. Adults and children who want to join the nearly one billion strong global volunteering community need not look far to get involved. The Corporation for National Community Service notes that the following are some easy ways to volunteer in your community. • Serve meals at a local shelter or community kitchen. • Sign up to work as a tutor or mentor with a local afterschool program. • Help adults find the right professional opportunities

by hosting a résumé writing/review workshop and conducting practice interview sessions. • Work in conjuction with a local food pantry to organize a food donation drive. • Volunteer to help the environment by working with local, state, or national park services to beautify parks and/ or a local community garden. • Work with a local emergency response organization to produce and distribute disaster-preparedness kits. • Help fellow community members save money by collecting and sharing information about free taxpreparation services. • Read to students or seniors- contact a local community or senior center. • Volunteer at an animal shelter. When it comes to volunteering, the opportunities are as endless as the benefits of giving back to your community.

Holiday gifts for four-legged family members

For The Edge

Holiday shoppers who are busy making lists and checking them twice should make sure they don’t overlook the family pet. Christmas has gone to the cats and dogs, as a greater number of people include their companion animals when selecting gifts each year. A study by OnePoll conducted by Rover.com, the nation’s largest network of dog sitters and walkers, found that 95 percent of pet owners have bought holiday gifts for their pets. Gifts can range from everyday needs, like food and treats, to more lavish extravagances like spa treatments. Pet owners who plan to get their pets gifts this year may want to consider some of the emerging pet trends as they browse wares and services. The Balance, a business, career and industry information site, says pet industry trends point toward these segments seeing growth. Natural pet products Just as people are interested in protecting the health of the planet and their own personal health, so, too, are they extending this concern to companion animals. Natural pet products, which can include natural flea and tick remedies, holistic foods, organic items, and all-natural grooming products, can make great gifts. Specialty pet services The American Pet Products Association says the demand for high-end pet grooming and other services is substantial. In addition, personalized training, behavioral consulting, portrait photography, dog sitting, and upscale spa treatments like pet Reiki and massage are booming. Mobile pet grooming Mobile pet grooming has become the norm in many areas. Mobile pet grooming can reduce the potential stress on animals, and tends to be very convenient for customers, particularly seniors and others who have mobility issues. Beyond these growing trends, pet owners have a bevy of other ideas from which to choose. Here are just a few different suggestions: • tests to detect pets’ DNA and trace breed and ancestry, • interactive puzzles to keep pets engaged and banish boredom, • stylish storage baskets for pet toys, • hidden cat litter or dog crate items that camouflage commonly used pet items, • heated pet bed for cozy nights and mornings, and • signature vests, coats and sweaters to look good and remain comfortable. Pet gifts are popular this time of year, ensuring all members of the family have a treat to open.

Best of the Best of Madison County & Riverbend:

Edwardsville Art Fair named Best Local Art Fair

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

EDWARDSVILLE — The Edwardsville Art Fair gives the gift of fine art to the community to appreciate and purchase close to home. This year was the sixth for the Edwardsville Art Fair, the premier event of the Edwardsville Arts Center, and features the work of approximately 100 artists from 15 states. And, the art fair and juried show was voted Best Local Art Fair in the Best of the Best of Madison County & Riverbend contest. The annual art fair, presented by the Edwardsville Arts Center, occurred Sept. 27-29 in City Park. The Edwardsville Arts Center begins accepting applications again immediately after each year’s fair for the next year’s fair and works on each annual art fair year-round. “We had a lot of new entries this year, which is really exciting,” said Edwardsville Arts Center Executive Director Melissa McDonough-Borden. McDonough-Borden, along with Edwardsville Arts Center Gallery Manager Carolyn Tidball, email artists directly,

reach out to artists at other art fairs and utilize resources, such as the Art Fair Source Book, to get the word out about the Edwardsville Art Fair, which distributes $15,000 in prize money to its winning artists. Three experienced judges, who have backgrounds in art such as collectors, artists and professors of art, are selected by the Edwardsville Arts Center’s exhibition committee. The judges select nine Best of Category winners, one each in the following Edwardsville Art Fair categories: clay; drawing and printmaking; fine craft; glass; jewelry; mixed media; painting; sculpture; and, photography (film or digital) and graphic design. Photography has emerged as a popular segment since the fine art fair and show started, Tidball noted. The Edwardsville Art Fair’s 2019 commemorative poster for featured the photographic work of 2018’s Best of Show winner, Buffalo-Springfield Roller Company 01 by Rick and Joni Graves, from Wisconsin. Artwork is judged on criteria including quality, expres-

sion, form and technique, among other analysis. Judges also select their top three pieces in each artist’s tent to recognize work from each, all of whom went through a process to be selected to appear in the fine art fair. On the first morning of the fair, judges average all the points collected during the jurying process and the highest points from all three judges win Best of Show. Likewise, Best of Category winners receive the highest points in their respective category of material used. The judges also give Merit Awards. The Best of Show winner receives $1,500; the nine Best of Category winners receive $800 each; and, Merit Award winners receive $350 each. Besides prize money and recognition, artists enjoy celebrating other artists and their wins, which is a reason Edwardsville Arts Center added its Awards Brunch to this year’s Edwardsville Art Fair. The ceremony and brunch occurred Sept. 29 under the main tent in City Park. This year Edwardsville Arts Center also recognized a fair volunteer. A VIP Edwardsville Art Fair Party also takes place each year on the fair’s opening night, with sponsors in attendance and live entertainment, also held in the main tent. Since the Edwardsville Art Fair’s inception, regular and major volunteers have included the Edwardsville High School Student Council and National Arts Honor Society. Visit edwardsvilleartscenter.com, its Facebook page and Twitter or call 618-6550337 for more information. The center is located at 6165 Center Grove Road, Edwardsville, Illinois.

People At The Party The Good Samaritan House of Granite City new board members, including board President Alex Madron, and her mother, Vice President Angie Miller, both of Edwardsville, held an open house last weekend to show the progress of an effort to reopen the shelter for homeless women and their children. The shelter closed last spring under a now-disbanded board due to lack of funding. The new board has raised $30,000 toward its goal of $100,000, designed to ensure the nonprofit home’s sustainability as the group seeks grants for 2021. Restaurants donated lunch, including bread from Bella Milano Edwardsville, salad from Uncle Linny’s in Granite City and paella from The Croquetterie in St. Louis.

A Night to Remember

The Edge

GODFREY — A record crowd of 600 people celebrated area excellence Wednesday night for the Best of the Best of Madison County & Riverbend, powered by The Intelligencer, On The Edge of The Weekend and The Telegraph. This year the event — deemed the largest red carpet event by any media in the Riverbend area — was moved to the Hatheway Cultural Center on the Godfrey campus of Lewis and Clark Community College to accommodate participants and exhibitors. The event, themed “A Night To Remember,” was coordinated by the publications’ Advertising Director Carole Fredeking. State Rep. Monica Bristow, D-Alton, and mayors from four area communities participated in the celebration. The event has grown rapidly over the past three years. In 2017, the Best of the Best of Madison County & Riverbend had 63 attendees. Last year, there were 423. This year, 600. “We have to find a way to outdo ourselves every year,” Fredeking said. “We appreciate the support that we get from our communities. We really do.” The evening began with a special presentation honoring the late Godfrey Fire Chief Jake Ringering being named Best Firefighter. Ringering was 37 years old when he was killed while fighting a March 5 fire in Bethalto. He

left a wife, Allison, and three children, Nora Marie, Elaina Lynn and Logan Jacob. As part of his honor at the awards ceremony, Hearst Midwest Media Group, the parent company of all three publications that sponsor the Best of the Best contest, made a donation to the Backstoppers organization, which supports area firefighters and their families. The top vote-getter this year in the Best of the Best of Madison County & Riverbend was Bella Milano Edwardsville, followed by OSF Healthcare in second and Roberts Ford in third. Seventeen sponsor plaques were presented for this year’s event, including a gold plaque to West Star Aviation and bronze plaques to First Community Credit Union, First Mid Bank & Trust, Mid American Audiology and Woods Basement Systems. Community sponsors included Castelli’s @255 Restaurant, Franklin Roofing, Imel Pest Control, Inspector Plumber, Tom Lane-State Farm, Jim Murphy’s Complete Landscaping, Professional Hearing Associates, Tucker’s Automotive, Liberty Bank, Robert Sanders Waste Systems Inc., Schrempf, Kelly & Napp LTD and Riverbend Dental. Nominations for this year’s competition were accepted through Sept. 20, with online voting Oct. 11-14. A special publication honoring this year’s nominees and winners is included inside this issue of On The Edge of The Weekend.

Above: Tom Guarino, of Bella Milano Edwardsville, and his daughter, Chloe Guarino, embrace presenter, Kaci Beatty of Hearst Midwest Media Group, which includes The Intelligencer, On The Edge of The Weekend, The Telegraph, The Journal-Courier, in Jacksonville, and all the associated websites, after accepting the award for Best Italian Restaurant. Bella Milano Edwardsville also won the most overall votes of any category in the annual Best of the Best contest. Below: Justin Newell, of Civic Memorial High School, in Bethalto, accepts the award for Best Principal from publisher Denise VonderHaar of The Intelligencer, The Telegraph and On The Edge of The Weekend.

“A lot of local businesses truly see it as an honor,” said the publications’ Digital Media Sales Specialist Kaci Beatty. “We’re really John and Bob Sanders of Robert Sanders Waste Systems wave to the crowd at Best of the proud to be able to put this on.” Best of Madison County & Riverbend: A Night To Remember, an awards ceremony held Nov. Honorees included: 20 a Hatheway Cultural Center on the Godfrey campus of Lewis and Clark Community College. • Best Car Salesman, Jason Enos Winners in 120 categories were voted on by readers of The Intelligencer and The Telegraph. • Best Chamber Director, John Keller More than 600 people — a record number — attended the Best of the Best of Madison County • Best Coach, Tommy Hill & Riverbend’s awards program and ceremony. Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

That’s Amore! By Vicki Bennington For The Edge

EDWARDSVILLE — When a moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie … that’s amore. You remember, right? Did the song mean love, in general, or love for pizza? Either way, Joe’s Pizza and Pasta is the kind of place that you walk into and smell the cheese and spices, and you become nostalgic. Or at least, I do. It reminds me of going to authentic Italian pizza places with my friends, ordering pizzas and hanging out. Joe’s has an extensive Vicki menu that goes beyond Bennington pizza. It’s not even just pizza and pasta. There are salads, sandwiches, appetizers, breads and desserts — with a lot of variations. Crusts come in thin, thick, Chicago style or stuffed. Specialty pizzas range from a traditional supreme style, called “Joe’s Special,” with sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onion and green pepper, to the

not-so-traditional, like, “BBQ Chicken,” with chicken, bacon, red onion and BBQ sauce, the “Chicken Alfredo,” with alfredo sauce, chicken, red onion and tomatoes, or the “Greek,” with mushrooms, black olives, spinach, red onion, feta cheese, olive oil and fresh garlic. Hmmm … now that I think about that one, I’ll have to give it a try. I went for the lunch special with a “Joe’s Deluxe,” which is also a take on a supreme traditional, but with the addition of green olives and pepperoncini. The lunch special comes with a two-topping, eight-inch pizza, with a small upcharge for choosing a specialty pizza. It also came with a choice of house salad, garlic bread or garlic sticks and a soft drink. My daughter went with the house salad with croutons and red onion. I chose to go with the dinner salad, which also included olives, cucumber and tomato, or we could have picked the Caesar. A side of bread sticks gave us a threecourse meal that was enough to take home for lunch the next day. I always like two

for the price of one; I mean who doesn’t? Besides the sticks, also bruschetta, cheesy pizza sticks and wings are among the appetizers on the menu. Pasta dishes include spaghetti, ravioli, angel hair and tortellini, or oven-baked stuffed shells, lasagna and pasta primavera, among others. If you are a white sauce lover, the “Trupiano Carbonara,” with mushrooms, tomatoes, ham and chicken in creamy alfredo, or traditional “Fettucini Alfredo” or “Shrimp Alfredo” are some of the selections. Subs come in club, BLT, meatball, Italian beef and several more combinations on white, wheat or Ciabatta. If you have room for dessert, I recommend the Tiramisu. We’re told that Joe’s first opened in Olney, Illinois, in 1971, by the Trupiano family, and the pizzas and pastas are made using original, secret Trupiano family recipes. So I can’t tell you what made it all taste so good, but I think it has to do with the Sicilian sauce. As advertised, there is a one-of-a-kind taste that is different than other pizza places. And that’s a good thing. We both agreed we would go back. Joe’s is in Edwardsville, Fairview Heights and Godfrey, and has 16 Illinois locations, all together, which means, even if you take a road trip, you might just come across this familiar place to eat. They also provide catering. For more information on what Joe’s has to offer, visit orderjoes.com.

Dark comedy ’Knives Out’ worth all the laughs

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

There’s a grisly new drama in theaters that also is one of the funniest ensemble films to be released all year. Writer-director Rian Johnson (“Brick,” “The Last Jedi”) trips the light fantastic in “Knives Out,” with his big, showy cast of overacting professionals really throwing their hearts into the production. It’s a murder mystery, a finely crafted “whodunit.” The scope of the work is, like, something out of an Agatha Christie novel, specifically one with an especially Albert Finney-ish Hercule Poirot. The audience reaction has been palpable considering that I finally saw this movie, more than two weeks removed

from back-to-back sold-out sneak previews at AMC Edwardsville 12 and my own parents seeing it (before me!) over a weekend. Renowned mystery writer Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer, my nonagenarian hero who turns 90 Friday) is discovered dead in the study of his Gothic mansion the morning after a lavish birthday party attended by all of his large, messy family. Thrombey’s tragic end is an obvious suicide, one in which the prolific scribe slit his own throat with a rajah’s dagger. During the grieving, each family member shows their true colors related to the way they loved dear old Harlan. His daughter, Linda (Jamie Lee Curtis), is glad that he’s finally in the ground. His son, Walt (Michael Shannon), hopes to remain, in perpetuity, as the head of the publishing firm that controls the 80 mil-

lion print copies sold in his dad’s lifetime. Daughter-in-law Joni (Toni Collette) is an indebted leech who hopes the gravy train keeps on rolling. The characters of Katherine Langford (Netflix teen drama “Thirteen Reasons Why”), Jaeden Martell, Don Johnson and Riki Lindhome take turns being petty, spoiled, oafish and backbiting. The real gem, as usual, is Chris Evans as Ransom Drysdale, a sweatered playboy grandson of Thrombey and so obviously out for what he can get from gramp’s estate that he comes off as genuine. All of these knuckleheads are bemusing, but the greatest of them all are our two leads — Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, a famous detective hired by an unknown agent to probe the suspicious case, and Ana de Armas as Marta Cabrera, Thrombey’s nurse and companion through his last few years.

Craig gives Blanc a country ham of an accent that sounds like Foghorn Leghorn doing a mocking impression of Colonel Sanders. It’s thick and unnecessary and it might even parlay itself into an Oscar nomination for the man we previously loved best as James Bond 007 (read on for more of my preposterous hypothesis). As Blanc unravels bizarre and somewhat obvious clues about a case that just doesn’t sit right with him, he does it with the only semi-normal character, Cabrera, in the entire conflagration. She knows where all the skeletons are buried, who’s cheating who and still loved the late patriarch more than all the rest of the hangerson combined. The dazzling digging that Blanc must do, is all the more entertaining for the audience while watching Cabrera (who’s

covering up Thrombey’s accidental death at her hand) thwart Blanc, subtly and sweetly, by his side the whole time. It’s a sick, dark comedy, but one worth all the laughs. So, can comedy still get an Oscar? Craig’s performance is certainly within the realm of possibility. He’s billed first. Though it’s a movie chock-full of supporting roles, his role is the flashiest. The accent is buffoonish, but the character is genius by reputation and really lays on the genteel diction, shrewdness and vocabulary bordering on logomaniacal. Craig’s “Knives Out” role is Lee Marvin in “Cat Ballou.” It’s Gene Wilder in “The Producers.” It’s Kevin Kline in “A Fish Called Wanda.” If de Armas didn’t give such a rewarding breakthrough performance herself, Craig’s quirky detective would have carried the show. Either way, it’s all fine by me! “Knives Out” runs 130 minutes and is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, including brief violence, some strong language, sexual references and drug material. I give this film four stars out of four.

AP names ‘To Live and Die in LA’ its top podcast of 2019

By ALICIA RANCILIO Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — The top 10 podcasts of the year picked by The Associated Press. 1. “To Live and Die in LA,” Tenderfoot TV & Cadence 13. What makes this podcast from journalist Neil Strauss so riveting is how organically it all came together. Strauss was asked to help out in the search of a missing woman in LA named Adea Shabani because he worked in media and could maybe help call attention to the case. He quickly established a trust with people involved who agreed to speak with him and share information. Some part s of the podcast air in almost real time. He even received tips f ro m l i s t e n e r s that altered the nature of the investigation. The podcast is No. 1 because of Strauss’ authenticity. He’s devoted to finding out what happened, even when it gets uncomfortable and frankly scary. 2. “22 Hours: An American Nightmare,” W T O P / PodcastOne. Journalists Megan Cloherty and Jack Moore do an excellent job at reconstructing the 2015 case of Savvas and Amy Savopoulos, their 10-year-old son and housekeeper who were taken hostage and then killed in their home. Another local station in Washington did their own podcast on the case as it was unfolding, but “22 Hours” didn’t air until after a man named Daron Wint was convicted of the murders. “22 Hours” is superior and makes this list because i t i s c a r e f u l l y, respectfully and responsibly reported about a horrific crime and sets an example for how true crime should be handled. Cloherty and

Moore should do more podcasts. 3. “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend,” Team Coco & Earwolf. You could say that celebrity podcasts are the new celebrity perfume because everybody has one and that number seems to grow by the day. O’Brien’s podcast is a standout because he has longer conversations that go beyond bits and talking points. Noteworthy episodes include a deep conversation with Howard Stern and a recent interview with Hillary and Chelsea Clinton. He helps humanize Chelsea in particular as she recalls being a kid in the White House, just trying to get her homework done with a State Dinner happening downstairs. 4. “Confronting: O.J. Simpson with Kim Goldman,” GLASS/Wondery. This podcast is an emotional roller coaster. Listening to Goldman, her father and friends remembering their son and brother Ron, who was killed with Nicole Brown Simpson in 1994, will make you cry. The reading of a letter Kim received from judge Lance Ito in response to a request for an interview will make you gasp, and taped portions of a phone call between O.J. Simpson’s attorney and journalist Nancy Glass are incredulous. 5. “Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez & Football Inc.,” The Boston Globe/ Wo n d e r y. T h i s podcast takes a fascinating look at the rise and fall of football star Aaron Hernandez who was convicted of murder and took his own life in prison. It also brings up issues of head injuries in football and toxic masculinity. 6. “1619,” The New York Times. Nikole-Hannah-Jones hosts this podcast on the beginning of slavery in America in 1619. It’s not only important to listen to this piece of integral black history but beautifully put together. 7. “Believed,” NPR. This podcast reveals how Olympic gymnast doctor Larry Nassar was able to

get away with sexual assault for more than 20 years. It also asks the question of why so often women aren’t believed. 8 . “ T h e Vi a l l Files,” Nick Viall. If you’re a “Bachelor” fan, you know Nick Vi a l l . H e ’ s t h e guy who was rejected on “The Bachelorette” twice before he was given the titular role as ABC’s Bachelor (but that resulting relationship didn’t work out either). While his podcast does address the show — and a recent episode with former Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe is a must-listen for fans — the podcast has helped Nick to become less of a caricature and more of cool dude offering a guy’s perspective. It’s like he’s got his own column in Cosmopolitan magazine but in podcast form. 9. “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard,” Armchair Umbrella. Dax Shepard’s podcast has been out for more than a year but the guy gives good chat. Some recent compelling interviews have been with Monica Lewinsky, Kate and Oliver Hudson, and Emilia Clarke. His shows are always entertaining. 10. “Office Ladies,” Earwolf. This podcast from former cast members of “The Office,” Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, is a recent release and so fun. They’re starting from the beginning and devoting each podcast to an episode of the series. It’s very exciting to think they’ve essentially committed to 201 tapings. Fischer and Kinsey offer commentary and behind-the-scenes detail from the comedy. The reallife best friends also sometimes go on amusing tangents. They’ve already had Rainn Wilson on as a guest and they’ve got 194 weeks to get Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak. The odds look good.
