Luck of the New Year By Vicki Bennington For The Edge Well … 2020 is finally at an end. Hopefully, 2021 will bring the good luck and better future that we’ve all been hoping for, and it doesn’t hurt to try a few tricks to help it along. Abraham Lincoln once said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it,” so eating a few foods to feed the superstitious promises that they are said to fulfill, might be one way to help create it. For as long as I can remember, my mom always served black eyed peas and cornbread on New Year’s Day. The peas are supposed to bring good luck, and evidently, from what I’ve read recently, they are also supposed to bring pennies, while cornbread is said to bring gold.
From my own experience, the pennies idea might be correct, I can’t vouch for the gold. But considering I’ve had what could be called a blessed and possibly “lucky” life, I’m not willing to break the black eyed peas tradition that got me this far. If you throw in greens, it is said to bring dollars. The greens can range from a little bit of spinach or kale cooked with the black eyed peas, to cabbage or a kale salad on the side. I don’t think my mom ever gave us a number for the black eyed peas, but some people believe you must eat 365 of them to have luck every day of the New Year. Do I want to count them? Not really. Fortunately, they are so good, I’m sure that I always eat more than the required number. Some say that cooking the

In Spain and Mexico, people try to eat 12 grapes as quickly as possible — at midnight — because each grape will bring luck for one of the 12 months ahead. Eating noodles (unbroken) are supposed to represent longevity. I’m sure just about everyone has heard of one or more of these legends — and probably practice a few — just in case. I’ve shared recipes for the two traditions that have been a part of my life for a very long time. And if some of the others sound intriguing, give them a try and let me know how they work out in a culinary way, as well as a good luck charm. Meanwhile, Happy New Year! Black eyed peas 1 bag of dried black eyed peas OR 2 cans of black eyed
peas 6 cups chicken stock 2 cups baby spinach, kale or other greens Salt, freshly ground black pepper, to taste Ham bone or ham chunk, if desired If using dried peas, cover them in water in a large bowl and let them soak overnight. The next day, drain them from the soaking liquid and give them a quick rinse under cold water. Place in a large pot and cover them with 4 inches of chicken stock. Simmer, covered, for about 1 hour. Start checking after 45 minutes to see if they are tender and add more broth or water as necessary to keep them covered. Add in a ham bone or ham chunks, if desired. Once black eyed peas are tender, season them and add any extras you want. Add the spinach, kale or other greens during the last 5 minutes or so and season with salt, pepper and any other favorite seasonings. You can always thrown in a few tomatoes to
possibly bring wealth and health. Cornbread 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup yellow cornmeal 2/3 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon salt 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 egg 1 cup milk 1/3 cup vegetable oil Preheat oven to 400 F. Spray or lightly grease a 9-inch round or square cake pan, or for thicker cornbread, use a loaf pan. In a large bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt and baking powder. Stir in egg, milk and vegetable oil until well combined. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean.
Netflix reworks leftovers with food-based reality game show By MARK KENNEDY AP Entertainment Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Just in time for anyone facing a heaving, post-holiday refrigerator comes a TV show about what to do with all those dubious dishes — leftovers. Each episode of the food game show "Best Leftovers Ever!" on Netflix sees three skilled cooks make new dishes out of already made dishes, hoping to walk away with $10,000. "People think leftovers is just reheating your food. It's not just reheating your food. Get creative with it. You could always create new and better things with it later," says comedian David So, one of the judges. In the first episode, contestants are given healthy leftovers — veggie salad, cauliflower rice, pork tenderloin with beets, and avocado with cottage cheese — and are asked to turn them into comfort food in 30 minutes. They have access to a pantry and kitchen staples. One contestant turned to Indian flavors, making a pork curry with fritters. Another went for Greek, making a beet- and porkstuffed pastry called a tiropita. The third made a tostada with glazed pepper jelly pork. In the second round, called the Takeout Takedown, contestants must make new dishes from restaurant leftovers in only an hour. One took chicken fingers and fries and made a potato gnocchi. Another turned old burgers and fries into pierogies. Later episodes see contestants turn football-watching party food — bean dip, sliders and raw veggies — into beef stroganoff or tacos, and turn leftover
barbeque into lasagna or dumplings. "If the audience can walk away and go back to their fridge and say, 'Hey, I'm not going to throw this away, I'm actually going to make something amazing out of it,' then we did our job," says So. The show arrives during a time when viewers have had to adjust to ordering takeout during the pandemic and at the end of holiday feasts. "The timing couldn't be more perfect," says the show's host, actress-musician Jackie Tohn, who starred in the TV series "GLOW" and is a self-described "leftover queen." "We can't go to restaurants and all we can do is order in. And then if you get that Chinese food and you don't want it to be Chinese food on night two, we're giving you a bunch of tips and tricks to make that possible." Tohn and So are joined by the second judge, British chef and TV personality Rosemary Shrager. The three have a slightly absurdist vibe, tossing cheeseballs into each others' mouths while contestants cook, or imitating Julia Child's high-pitched modulations. "Being on set wasn't like work. It was just like talking to your friends and eating really good food around talented people," So says. "I mean, everybody would love a job like that, right?" The show appealed to both So and Tohn since they grew up in households where there was little food wasted. Tohn's grandmother used to keep bones for marrow: "Nothing ever got thrown away. I mean, we ate leftovers until the very end." And So had leftovers all week. "Everybody thinks that you have to eat
new food every day. And that's just not what I grew up with," he says. "My mom would always make a big meal on the weekend and then I would have to be creative and then make good food on the weekdays with it." He laughs that chefs always stress fresh ingredients but a lot of what restaurants send out is leftovers, like arancini, which are

Tituss Burgess, Adam Lambert star in 'Ratatouille' musical By MARK KENNEDY AP Entertainment Writer NEW YORK (AP) — TikTok's crowdsourced "Ratatouille" musical has cooked up some serious talent for its one-night-only benefit concert, including roles for Tituss Burgess, Adam Lambert, Wayne Brady, André De Shields and Ashley Park. "Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical" — fondly nicknamed the "Ratatousical" — will begin streaming on Friday at 7 p.m. ET for 72 hours. Tickets are on sale exclusively on TodayTix. com and are $5. Proceeds will benefit The Actors Fund, which aids entertainment industry workers. It is the product of several minds — many musical theater fans and out-of-work performers — who collaborated on original songs, lyrics and ideas to turn an animated, non-musical film into a two-act Broadwaystyle show. The story for both film and musical centers on Remy, an ambitious rat who dreams of becoming a Parisian chef. Burgess will play Remy, Lambert plays his older brother, Emile, and Brady plays his father. Tony Awardwinner De Shields plays food critic Anton
Ego, Kevin Chamberlin plays the great chef Gusteau and Andrew Barth Feldman plays Gusteau's "nephew" Linguini. Other cast members will be Tony-winner Priscilla Lopez, Tony-nominee Ashley Park, Owen Tabaka and three-time Tony-nominee Mary Testa. The show will be performed with the 20-piece Broadway Sinfonietta orchestra. The musical — based on the 2007 Disney/ Pixar film — has been percolating over the past several months on TikTok and many of that social media platform's viral stars who helped contribute to the show are involved in the production. Both Emily Jacobsen, who wrote the original "Remy the Ratatouille" song for TikTok, and composer Daniel Mertzlufft, whose arrangement of that song helped kickstart the online effort are being given writing credit, as is Blake Rouse, who wrote two of the more popular songs on TikTok, "The Rat's Way of Life" and "Ratatouille Tango." The streamed show will be produced by Seaview Productions. By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge EDWARDSVILLE — As I write this final review of 2020, I can’t help but remark on what a weird year it’s been for feature films. It seems like, just yesterday, we were barred from our favorite theaters and little has changed since March in that regard. My overall analysis of the total slate will come in just a couple of weeks because now a strange confluence of events has occurred. All of the films that were held up or truncated in their release by the coronavirus pandemic are hitting streaming and rental platforms at nearly the same time as the last-ditch holiday releases are arriving in multiplexes. With “Wonder Woman 1984” and Tom Hanks’ “News of the World” (among a couple of others I’d like to check out) debuting in just over 24 hours from this writing, I see quite a bit to keep us busy. The first movie I saw this week was one of those that was in cinemas when they closed. “I Still Believe” is about the life and loss faced by country music singer Jeremy Camp (KJ Apa) when his first wife, Melissa Henning (Britt Robertson), died in 2001 from ovarian cancer. Some of the powerful ballads of his early career came directly out of the tragedy they faced in their courtship during her illness. While it’s devastatingly emotional to watch this loving couple be decimated almost from the onset, the movie does a remarkable job of showing happy times and the bloom of young love, all the while foreshadowing the looming crisis of faith that we all know is coming. Henning was very devout and
she relied on her faith to ease her considerable pain. This movie didn’t disappoint and I’m glad I didn’t let it slip past me. After a limited engagement, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” is now on Netflix. This film is an update of American playwright August Wilson’s 1982 play of the same name. It was not what I was expecting, and I find myself disassociated with most of the action because it speaks very specifically to the black experience that Wilson was so famous for in his work. I can see the appeal for the actors involved: Viola Davis has a great history with Wilson’s work. She won a Tony for the 2010 Broadway revival of 1985’s stage play, “Fences,” by Wilson, and an Oscar for the role of Rose in 2016’s movie version of same. “Ma Rainey’s” also features Chadwick Boseman in his final film role before his untimely death from cancer earlier this year. Denzel Washington produced and former television actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson wrote the screenplay, one I imagine left a lot of room for improvisation. Real-life figure Ma Rainey (Davis), who’s black and known as the “Mother of the Blues,” has a sound that was much in demand in the late 1920s. An enterprising white producer (Jonny Coyne) brings her to Chicago on a hot summer day to record an album that he thinks will mint him good money and maybe a little notoriety. The plot of this movie will illustrate why it was a successful play and maybe one that doesn’t benefit from adaptation. Rainey’s band arrives to the studio to rehearse before their diva makes her grand entrance. Cutler (Colman Domingo),

(Photo courtesy of Netflix| For The Edge) Toledo (Glynn Turman) and Slow Drag (Michael Potts) are veteran musicians who clash with brash young horn player Levee (Boseman). The men share stories, trade quips and bust each others’ chops for a while, gradually acquiescing to Levee’s call to change up the music in his aspirational style. Rainey doesn’t care for his interpretations, especially when Levee also starts making eyes at her girlfriend (Taylour Paige). It ends on a note almost as hot as that windowless basement recording studio in 1927. “I Still Believe” runs 116 minutes and is rated PG for thematic material. I give this film two stars out of four. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” runs 86 minutes and is rated R for language, some sexual content and brief violence. I give this film one star out of four.
