Edwardsville just might have it all
By Penny Weaver
Just what is it about Edwardsville?
This community is booming on many fronts:
• A growing selection of restaurants and businesses for residents and visitors alike
• Planned greenspace at the many parks, large and small, throughout town
• Attractiveness to new residents via factors including a solid job market, quality schools and notably low crime rate
• Amenities that unite the population through the arts, recreation, fundraisers and benefits for neighbors in need, and so much more. So what is the “wow” factor that Edwardsville has to offer?
It can’t be just one thing. This community has a collection of appeal for young and old, families and singles, extroverts and introverts, the athletic and the contemplative.
LIVELY DOWNTOWN
Perhaps it’s the active downtown that makes Edwardsville the shining star that it is in the St. Louis Metro East region. Downtown Edwardsville is peppered with hometown restaurant options from Cleveland Heath to Sgt. Pepper’s Café, all with local flavors that only this community offers. Visitors and residents enjoy small and growing businesses in the heart of the community, from RunWell, specializing in shoewear to enhance performance and comfort for runners as well as nurses and anyone with special footwear needs, to Shoppes on Main, a small business marketplace. Each year, from May to October, the Land of Goshen Community Market offers produce, live entertainment and a wide variety of goods downtown, set up every Saturday.
In August, the Busey Bank Edwardsville Rotary Criterium fills downtown with athletes and spectators, vendors and live entertainment, as professional

bicyclists in many classes and heats race to the finish line. Certainly a highlight of downtown Edwardsville is the historic Wildey Theatre, reopened in 2011 as a center of the performing arts, entertainment and movies. Famous acts ranging from ‘The Return of Emerson Lake and
Palmer’ to legendary British rock band Badfinger have since taken the stage at the Wildey, which was built as an opera house in 1909. The theater seats 325 and is updated with state-of-the-art technical capabilities. It also hosts everything from special events to business meetings to yoga classes.
STANDING OUT
One shining star that helps define Edwardsville is its multipurpose trail system. Check elsewhere in this publication for full details. The community sports several parks and opportunities for exercise, picnics, fun with canine friends and places to enjoy as
a family. Options for fishing and other outdoor activities, the arts, historic tales, learning for youth and adults, and so much more abound here. We’ve got lots more details in this year’s Discover community guide magazine. Does Edwardsville really have it all? We invite you to find out!

Safest Cities List Includes Edwardsville
By Penny Weaver
It’s more about what Edwardsville is lacking versus what it offers to residents and visitors that has literally put this community “on the map” on a national level. In this case, that’s a good thing.
What Edwardsville doesn’t have is crime — well, not as much crime at least, when compared to similar cities. Among the Top 100 Safest Cities in the nation, Edwardsville comes in at No. 33 and is featured on a July 2023 map on the Visual Capitalist website, visualcapitalist.com. The original report from NeighborhoodScout at
neighborhoodscout.com focused on cities with a population of 25,000 or higher.
Out of the Top 100, Edwardsville ranks at No. 33 with a population of 25,218 and total crime rate of 5.5 per 1,000 residents. That means an individual has a 1 in 178 chance of being a victim of a crime in the community, the report noted.
By comparison, the No. 1 “Safest City” in the U.S. by these statistics is Ridgefield, Connecticut, with a crime rate of 1.9 per 1,000 residents, giving folks there just a 1 in 510 risk of becoming a statistic on crime reports.

That includes arson, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, murder, rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault. 1. Edwardsville East
2. Holiday Shores
3. Stone Meadows/SIUE
4. Bluff Junction
5. City Center/Leclaire
Edwardsville is given a crime index of 72 based on a scale with 100 being the safest. That means this community is safer than 72% of U.S. neighborhoods, according to NeighborhoodScout. It has a lower crime rate
than 66% of communities in Illinois, based on this analysis of FBI crime data.
Annual crimes reported in Edwardsville include 10 violent offenses and 131 property crimes for a total of 141. Local residents have a 1
in 2,522 chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime, while that number is 1 in 253 for the state of Illinois as a whole.

Welcome to the MCT Trails
Spanning more than 135 miles and connecting twenty communities, the 12 bikeways in the MCT Trails system, form one of the most extensive and interconnected trail networks in the country. Developed, owned, and maintained by the Madison County Transit District (MCT), the scenic MCT Trails have transformed Madison County, Illinois into a haven for bicyclists, runners, walkers, and nature lovers. Running through and alongside a variety of natural landscapes – prairies, forests, lakes, the bluff-line and even the Mississippi River – the MCT Trails are linear parks, comprising nearly 1,600 acres of greenspace.
Located on former rail corridors, the MCT Trails are considered Class I bikeways, separated from the road –and with 48 bridges and 22 tunnels there are few at-grade crossings for trailgoers. The MCT Trails story began in January of 1993, when MCT received permissive authority from the State of Illinois to acquire, develop, and operate bikeways. Since that time, MCT has invested more than $50 million to preserve these vital transportation corridors and construct this one-of-a-kind community asset, the MCT Trails system.

LET’S RACE, EDWARDSVILLE!
Criterium brings swift bicyclists and cheering spectators downtown each year
By Penny Weaver
The crowd-pleasing Busey Bank Edwardsville Rotary Criterium brings enthusiastic athletes and spectators to Edwardsville each August.
Hundreds of professional cyclists and thousands of cheering supporters descend on downtown for the Saturday race and companion events that include children’s activities, live music, vendor booths, food trucks and beverages.
Races that are the focal point of the rain-or-shine event begin
at noon, which was earlier in 2023 versus 6 p.m. in the past. The course and start/finish line downtown are always abuzz with excitement, with the largest crowds gathering around 5 or 6 p.m. on race day.
The race itself is a professional event made up of several heats that follow a five-turn route careening through downtown streets. The Criterium for the first time was the final race in the 2023 Illinois Cup, a showcase of the best cycling races in the state. Brian Mulhall, race director and an Edwardsville Rotary member, said being part of that showcase is a wonderful feather in the cap
of the long-running Criterium series of professional and amateur races.
Accompanying the race is a festival-like atmosphere and activities for all ages.
An Entertainment Zone spans St. Louis Street between North Main Street and North Second Street. The festival entertainment doesn’t end when the races wrap up about 7:30 p.m.; instead, it stretches to 11 p.m. with live music, a variety of cuisine available at food trucks, beverages and more.
The fest includes a Kids Zone next to the Wildey Theatre, 252 N. Main St. It features free bicycle helmet fittings and a giveaway, a free art tent, free ice cream and games.
Four free races for kids are held late in the afternoon, too, with tykes on bikes fanning out the width of Main Street on the race route.
The City of Edwardsville is a presenting sponsor of the Criterium, which has been hosted by the Edwardsville Rotary Club since 2010 as a fundraiser for community projects.

AAA names property among ’10 beautiful botanical gardens to explore’ Gardens At SIUE Earns National Recognition
By Scott Marion
The all-volunteer staff at The Gardens at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is enjoying some hard-earned recognition. In its April 2023 edition, AAA magazine listed The Gardens at SIUE among “10 beautiful botanical gardens to explore” in the Midwest and the South.
“We’re delighted to earn this honor because they approached us about it,” said Carol Gardner, who is the volunteer coordinator for The Gardens at SIUE. “We want people to realize that this is an all-volunteer effort.”
The 36-acre botanical garden serves a dual function as a living laboratory for education and research at SIUE
and as a place of beauty for the university population and the public to enjoy.
The property includes a variety of natural areas, gardens, bridges and student-
designed sculpture in a landscaped setting. Paved walking paths and plentiful benches are located throughout. A group of Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists, mostly
retirees, are responsible for planning, planting and maintaining the grounds after the university suffered a budget crunch seven years ago.
“Cougar Lake isn’t part
24 2023-2024 | Discover Edwardsville & Glen Carbon
of the Gardens, but it’s right next to us and we have also a path that leads right to the campus, so we get a lot of walking traffic,” Gardner said. “We have 25 Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists that work out here and we’re all under the supervision of the University of Illinois Extension. On a good day, 15 of them might be here.
“The Master Naturalists are interested in native plants, trees and environmental issues and they do a lot of the heavy work for us. This is a busy time for us, and it will be for the next month or so. In about two weeks, we’ll plant all our annuals.”
‘People who love it’ For Gardner, the volunteers are the lifeblood of The Gardens at SIUE.
“We have great volunteers,” Gardner said. “They’re all people who love it out here and they do a lot more than they have to do. Master Gardeners are required to work a certain number of hours every year for their certification, but they go way beyond that. “We’re all people that like things to look nice and we’re all gardeners. We can always find something else that needs to be fixed.”
Among the many features of The Gardens at SIUE are the Hardy Family Wind Forest, which features a set of kinetic sculptures that are set in motion by the wind; the Butterfly Garden, which was added in 2014; and the
Prairie Portal, a oneacre garden created by the Edwardsville Rotary Club.
“We have a prairie section that’s what Illinois would have looked like originally,” Gardner said. “We’re not able to do prescribed burns, but we maintain it as best we can. The prairie has a lot of wildflowers but they’re not blooming yet.
“July is one of the best times to visit because the butterflies are everywhere, and the flowers are in full bloom. One of our Master Naturalists does the pruning for the trees on our Presidents Walkway and he has it looking so beautiful.
“The university does the big mowing, but we pay to have somebody do the finished mowing.”

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is the community’s obvious crown jewel for higher education, and positive paths to learning start here with the youngest students. Covering 185 square miles, Edwardsville’s school District 7 includes rural areas, small towns and suburban communities. Edwardsville and Glen Carbon are the largest municipalities in the district.
For 2022-23, District 7 had approximately 7,400 students routed through 13 buildings: six primary elementary facilities, four intermediate elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, one alternative high
school and the N.O. Nelson Complex.
The school mascot is the Tiger. The main high school building is located at 6161 Center Grove Drive, while its football stadium and many athletic fields are across the street to the south.
Growth in recent years has been exponential. After a building referendum in 2007, District 7 built three new elementary schools, which opened by fall of 2008. An April 2023 referendum approved by voters means extensive facilities improvements across all Edwardsville schools is underway. The district’s total minority enrollment is about 20
percent. District 7 achieves a 93 percent graduation rate, spending an average of $11,000 per student per school year, and comes in with an average 23.1 student class size, compared to the state average of 20.9, according to the most recent numbers from state officials. In addition to public schools, Edwardsville has private
school options including Father McGivney Catholic High School, with a Maryville address just south of Edwardsville; Metro-East Lutheran High School on Center Grove Road in Edwardsville; Trinity Lutheran School; St. Boniface School, with a Catholic affiliation; and the Goddard School of Edwardsville.

TOP 10 RESTAURANTS
Local residents know that picking only 10 favorite Edwardsville restaurants is a tough proposition
The top 10 best restaurants in Edwardsville, as ranked by tripadvisor.com, may not surprise local residents. And there are many more than 10 mouth-watering menus at businesses across
the community. But according to tripadvisor. com, which plenty of people outside Edwardsville use to get a look behind the curtain here, the 10 best restaurants in town are:
1 — DOC’S SMOKEHOUSE
Doc’s has been routinely making headlines for its barbecue since opening in 2014. Just last fall, Doc’s landed on the national Best of the Best Barbecue Restaurants in America list by Barbecue News Magazine — for the fifth year in a row. Looks like the secret is out about Doc’s, located at 6108 Shoger Drive, Suite D.
2 — CLEVELAND HEATH
Edwardsville institution Cleveland Heath opened in 2011 and, most recently, changed hands in 2021. It has received state honors among top Illinois restaurants, and local residents know why.
Located at 106 Main St., the restaurant is known to specialize in comfort foods with elegance and unique dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Plus, Cleveland Heath came away with honors for Best Bar Program: Cocktails in the 2023 Feast 50 Readers’ Choice Awards from St. Louis-based Feast magazine. In addition, the restaurant’s Evan Buchholz made the readers’ choice list as runner-up for Chef of the Year
3 PEEL WOOD FIRED PIZZA
Since December 2009, Peel Wood Fired Pizza has been pleasing palates, and the restaurant is now located in the One57 Building at 32 South Route 157, near Esic Drive.
It’s known for its brew pub and menu items inspired by Thai, Southern French and Italian cuisine in addition to (of course) pizza.

5 — WANG GANG ASIAN EATS
Here’s another award-winning Edwardsville restaurant, voted No. 3 Best Chinese Restaurant in St. Louis 2011 by Sauce Magazine readers. Wang Gang opened in 2009 and is located at 1035 Century Drive.
6 54TH STREET GRILL AND BAR

Plus, the affiliated 1818 Butcher and Market in Edwardsville was a runner-up in the Best Butcher Shop category in the Feast awards.
9 SUGO’S SPAGHETTERIA
