Baldwin looking for consistent numbers BY JOHN RAFFEL Pioneer Sports Director BALDWIN — Baldwin football coach Bob Watkins is in his third season with the 8-player squad and is looking to build consistent numbers for a season, which starts on Aug. 30 at home with Camden-Frontier. “Right now, on the high end, I had 15 players and on the low end, I had 11,” he said. “I had five or six guys who don’t have physicals and can’t get them until next week. They will probably be with us for first game. They’re being checked on for eligibility.” Baldwin didn’t have a win last year and struggled with numbers. The Panthers have four JV games on the schedule. “Everything is up in the air,” Watkins said. Darrion Hayter and Ian Lemieux, a lineman along with backs Derek Mock and Dexter Hossler, are key players along with Davion Coats and Dylan Hibma.

Baldwin volleyball team boasts impressive numbers BY JOHN RAFFEL Pioneer Sports Director BALDWIN — Coach Duane Roberts is getting his Baldwin volleyball team ready for a season which will start on Sept. 5 at home against Marion. “This is our third official day practice,” he said on Aug. 16. “We had some open gyms and conditioning over the summer. I had a great number of girls. I’m looking to have a JV team this year. There’s a lot of young talent coming from the freshmen that have come from the middle school. They’ve been here over the summer putting
in the work.” Roberts has two seniors with Areyania Boatwright (attacker and server) and Jenna Johnson (setter-attacker) and three juniors with Monique Rowland (outside hitter), Tamia Hill (libero) and Kendra Washington (outside and middle hitter). He has one sophomore with Cierra Pieske (second setter) and freshmen Abigail Oisten (outside and middle attacker) and Aariona Burrell (middle hitter and back row player). There’s also Penelope Lapham who will be an all-around hitter.

Evart football team eyes improvement from 2-7 record BY JOHN RAFFEL Pioneer Sports Director EVART — Evart’s football team is coming off a 2-7 season, and coach Pat Craven’s players are determined to improve on the record this fall. “Our 2018 season was one that was hindered with injury,” Craven said. “Key injuries to top personnel in the league really thinned out our opportunities for explosive plays. We also learned the hard lesson of inadequate strength training in the off-season as most of the teams we played significantly man-handled us. We took this very seriously and moved into the 2019 campaign with the very direct goal of improving our physical selves. “Carter Pritchard, Billy Conklin and Kyle Stokes were all significant pieces of our team last year that have graduated and moved on. Each brought a different piece to our puzzle. Their injuries significantly impacted our team’s successes last year.” Among the key returning Veteran Evart football coach Pat Craven (center) is ready for another season. Brown makes debut as Evart volleyball coach BY JOHN RAFFEL Pioneer Sports Director EVART — Amanda Brown makes her debut as Evart volleyball coach this season, extending a career which included a tenure as skipper at Crossroads Charter Academy. “Evart, last season, finished higher in the conference than they did the year before,” Brown said. Graduation losses included four-year setter Mackenzie Kimball, “who was very good at what she did,” Brown said, plus “Angel Porter who was a middle hitter and her excitement after a block or a good hit will be missed.” Livia Hopkins is a senior this season and “will be an outside hitter and has a solid serve,” Brown said. “Kaylee Ladd, who is the staple in the back row (as libero), also has a great serve. Kara Henry who is also returner in the middle hitter spot, does a good job blocking and hitting. The other players we have are well-rounded, hard working and scrappy. “I expect them to be surprised by the things they are capable of when you work as a team and (for them) to get ahead of themselves. We will be a good serving team and scrappy.” The Wildcats factor in Conference.

10 PIONEER FOOTBALL-VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW | FALL 2019
Defending national runners-up Bulldogs eager to get started BY JOHN RAFFEL Pioneer Sports Director Ferris State coach Tony Annese points out one thing about his team as the 2018 NCAA Division II national runners-up get ready for 2019: “We’re on a one-game losing streak.” The Bulldogs know what their goal would be by the end of this season, but are also fully aware they have to start from scratch and see what happens week-by-week. Ferris is picked to be No. 1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings via the league’s preseason coaches poll announced recently with the GLIAC Media Day in Detroit. The Bulldogs received eight of a possible nine first-place votes and had 64 points to head the nine-team field. Head coaches voted in the poll, but were not allowed to pick their own team. Ferris won the conference title last fall with a perfect league mark and finished 15-1 after losing in the NCAA Division II national championship game. Ashland was in second place with 55 points followed by Grand Valley State, which totaled 51 points and got the other first-place mention.
Ferris State football coach Toniy Annese hopes to point the way to another winning season for FSU. (Pioneer file photo) defensive back Delon Stephenson (Sayreville, N.J.). Campbell, the reigning Harlon Hill Trophy winner as the nation’s top Division II player, was chosen as the publication’s Preseason National Offensive Player of the Year. FSU had three of the four players from the GLIAC on the magazine’s Preseason All-America list.
“You don’t get as successful as our kids have been without focusing on the right things,” Annese said. “We focus on the process. If you get ahead of yourself and focus on the wrong things, and you don’t commit to the process, bad things can happen.” Campbell did not see action during spring football after Three Bulldogs are preseason having elbow surgery. All-Americans, from Lindy Sports, including senior de- “He’s progressing,” Annese fensive end Austin Edwards said. “It’s his left elbow. He’s (Lansing/Waverly) on the first progressed quite well. er), we’ll have to see if he’s ready for it. We’ve got some things up in the air. But we participated in the spring without him. We have a lot of depth.”
“It starts up front. We have four offensive linemen back who started in the national championship game and a lot of defensive linemen back. We have a lot of good players. If we have it in our hearts to be The Bulldogs will be returning great, we have a chance to be a majority of their players. really good.” “Trust is a key component of our success,” Annese said. “Hopefully, they trust me and they know I love them. There’s some comfortability in going with the same group of guys for the most part. There’s some concern if they’ll be complacent or content. What we did last year isn’t going to help us this year.
The target is definitely on FSU’s back, Annese agreed. “They’re going to come after us, but it’s more about us than them,” Annese said. “We start off with two tough nonleague opponents. Findlay’s a great opponent, then we have to go out to Central Washington. Then we start the GLIAC play
at Ashland. It’s important we get off to fast start. The GLIAC is a test every week. If you’re not ready, you can lose your hopes real quick.”

FALL 2019 | Supplement to the Pioneer 21
Mohawk volleyball team anxious for another solid season BY JOHN RAFFEL Pioneer Sports Director MORLEY — Braelyn Berry was the only freshman awarded All-State honors in Division 3 volleyball last season, and will be among the key returning players for Coach Robin Kozuch’s Morley Stanwood team. The Mohawks won the Central State Activities Association Silver crown last year, plus two tournaments and had four players earn allleague honors and two take all-region accolades. Berry was third-team All-State. “We had five seniors graduate,” Kozuch said. “All played vital roles in the team in different ways. McKenna Bennett was a serving specialist and did a great job. She really embraced her role. Erika Ulrich and McKenzie Scott both were strong attackers on the outside and were great leaders on the floor. “Abi Waldo played a variety of roles and we really will miss her versatility. Samantha Taylor graduated last year and was one of our strongest all-around players. She ended the season with 47 aces, 26 kills and 456 digs. She was a strong back row player and really brought out her best performance in the front row last season, which made her a threat from any position.” Yates is confident in the abilities of her two seniors. “Mackenzie will be setting for her final varsity season as a senior this year,” Yates said. “She has put so much work into becoming a well-rounded athlete and we’re going to take full advantage of that this year. Her serves are strong, and her attacking has really come on since the last season. I expect her to be a big player for us in all positions this season. “Jada will be hitting for us in her final varsity season as a senior as well. Last year, I moved her to left, but she’s shown a passion for middle and has really taken it upon herself to show just how versatile she can be. You can expect to see her in either position this season, and I’m hoping to see big swings from her this year.”
