Huron Community Fair returns with summer fun Mark Birdsall A ssistant Editor

the board has no control over the prices set by food vendors, either. Tickets to grandstand events are still $10, he added.

It’s time once again for the Huron Community Fair, which runs from July 31, through Saturday, Aug. 6, at the fairgrounds in Bad Axe.

Wednesday, Aug. 3, will feature the Bump-NRun with the Demolition Derby, the prospect feeder and poultry shows, a senior citizens’ free meal and musical entertainment in the Merchant Building.

Fair Board President Clark Brock said organizers are looking forward to a return to normal after COVID. “I’m hoping we have a fair closer to (the one in) 2019,” Brock said. “We want to get back to normal.”

On Thursday, Aug. 4, the fair is hosting a special needs event, the Super Kicker Rodeo and the market beef show and sale. Friday, Aug. 5, is highlighted by the fanfavorite Redneck Truck Race and the JLA Auction Sale. The fair culminates on Saturday, Aug. 6, with the Tractor Pull, the Small Livestock Association Auction and the SLA Adult Showmanship Contest.

The fair kicks off on Sunday, July 31, with the opening ceremony, free parking, afternoon harness racing and the crowing of the Bean Queen as well as a host of other events. Harness racing will be a little bigger and more involved this year, Brock said. Monday, Aug. 1, will be highlighted by events like afternoon horseracing, horse, goat and sheep shows. Tuesday, Aug. 2, is Kids Day, which will be filled with fun activities for the littlest fairgoers. On the schedule this year are pig races, a chainsaw carver on the midway, a “Miracle of Life” exhibit, KOI drag racing, a drawing for kids bicycles and horse, swine, dairy and rabbit shows. The midway opens at 1 p.m., and ride bracelets cost $15.

The Elkton Lions Club will host carnival-style bingo all week long, 50 cents per card/per game, with games 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, 3 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Brock said the fair board is hoping for great weather like fairgoers enjoyed in 2021 but is also keeping its collective fingers crossed for some rain between now and then. “Come on out and enjoy yourselves,” Brock said.

Carnival rides will cost a little more this summer due to high fuel prices, Brock said, and he wanted to remind fairgoers that

Pigs, cows, and sheep will be brought on stage during an auction put on by the Junior Livestock Association. Huron County youth ages 8 to one year after high school graduation will be selling animals that they raised themselves. Though there are some exceptions where schools have one of their FFA members exhibit a project for a fundraiser, the kids raised the animals with money from their own pockets. Therefore, whatever money earned from the animals goes to them for compensation. According to Clint Hagen, the market beef superintendent for the

a few years ago at a fair convention. If you have a vehicle that’s not a hot-rod, come challenge your neighbor to a drag race. We will have fourwheelers, side-by-sides, pick-ups, and other vehicles. It’s a grudgematch short track drag racing.”

The Huron Community Fair is back and better than ever for its 154th running. The grandstand events are expected to bring excitement to the community that will be showcasing their livestock, riding fair rides and enjoying plenty of fair food throughout the week.

A Bump-N-Run demolition derby is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3. The Super Kicker Rodeo is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4. Redneck truck races are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Aug 5, and the TTPA Tractor pull is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6.

Huron Community Fair board President Clark Brock said some of the events that will be taking place have been staples they’ve had for years. “The people of the community really enjoy them, so we continue to bring them back,” he said. “We also look at events we can afford. We can only afford certainsized events, as some things can get extremely expensive. Some events may not fit our facilities. Some events we look at

running this year is an event we’ve run in the past,” he added.

Sunday, July 31. Horse racing is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1.

In the grandstands, harness racing is scheduled for 2 p.m.

KOI participants will have a practice run from 5-7 p.m, with drag racing

“If you follow the events every night, there’s a good chance that someone from Huron County is competing in it,” Brock said. “We like having those types of events that provide entertainment where our local people root for their neighbors.”

Elkton Lions Club bingo tent returns to the Huron Community Fair Shawn Robinson Staff writer The Elkton Lions Club is bringing back bingo during the Huron Community Fair this year. The event will run daily, Monday through Friday, 3-10 p.m., Saturday 1-10 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. The Lions club has been servicing and helping the Elkton community for 62 years, and puts on events all throughout the year. The club has been running the bingo tent at the fair since the early 1960s, after taking the duties from the fair board, which originally started it. Bingo under the Lions has been running strong for over 30 plus years. “It’s a great social event,” bingo Chairman Melissa Parrish said. “It’s a great opportunity to see a lot of other people and it’s fun to watch people win.” With the help of volunteers, bingo can run smoothly, with 100 people playing at a time.

second consecutive year, the tent will run on Sunday. The Lions Club is encouraging people to come “get their bingo on” Sunday, July 31. “Our goal is to get a big crowd coming to play on Sunday,” Parrish said. “We’re trying to appeal the seniors and others that come to the fair but don’t want to be outside all day.” A perk of playing on Sunday is there is no admission charge at the gate. The tent is only for fair attendees 18 years or older, following state gambling rules and regulations. The tent will be carnival style bingo, or in other words, play as many cards as you’d like for the entire day or just one round. “In the past we’ve had people waiting for the tent to open and they’re one of the last ones to leave at the end of the night,” Parrish said.

“We have three different shifts a day and about 10 volunteers a day,” Parrish said. “There’s 180 shifts that we have to fill to make sure the tent runs smoothly.”

Each card/game is 50 cents, so it’s recommended to bring all the quarters you can bring. There will be ATM machines available, as it is cash only.

Last year the group had games all throughout the week for the first time. This year, for the
