Still lost, but becoming found A final thank you and farewell to senior year BY JACLYN ISKOW Bad Axe High School Throughout half of my high school career, I was pretty adamant on studying journalism after I graduated high school. I can’t pinpoint an exact time where this dream dispersed, but I do know that once that plan was no longer in the works and my interest faded, I became quite lost. I freaked out. For the past year and a half, I have been researching different career paths and post-graduate plans, and I still have not made up my mind. This has caused abnormal amounts of stress, and I become frustrated at times. What I do know is that I am prepared for whatever opportunities may come my way, but that is thanks to many teachers who have provided the guidance that I needed. My advanced placement teachers Mrs. Kervin and Mrs. Sutherland have
challenged, and I mean challenged, my writing and time management skills. Now all I see are prepositional phrases and all I hear is “NO CONTRACTIONS!” Mrs. Kervin has allowed me to study advanced placement English independently, which means I have a personalized lesson plan. As stressful as that’s been for her, I am eternally grateful. You know a teacher loves what they do when they step out of their way to educate. Both have adequately prepared me for college classes and have built up confidence in my productive persona. My visual communications teacher at the Huron Area Technical Center, Mr. Turner, has opened up my mind to multiple creative outlets in the world of technology. With it, he has taught me that failure is an inevitable aspect of life, but that if my work is fueled by passion, I can overcome anything. My yearbook advisor, Mrs. Anderson, has not only enlightened me on interviewing and graphic design, but has been a supportive
friend who helped me realize that life is stressful, but it’s OK to ask for help. She’s the reason I have been accepted into multiple colleges, and I couldn’t thank her enough. After high school, I will be moving to Sweden for an 11-month foreign exchange program where I will be repeating my senior year. Hopefully, this provides insight on who I am as a person and what I am meant to pursue. A special thank you is due to my abnormally weird, but generous and loving friends, Nicole Grigg and Alexis Muether. They have witnessed all of the mental breakdowns, heartbreaks, and chaos that come with high school. I wouldn’t be Jaclyn Iskow without them. As bittersweet as leaving beloved friends and teachers can be, I am immensely excited to experience this new segment of my life. Thank you to those who have lead me here, and I will try my very best to live up to my potential — it’s the least I could do in return.

STUDENT LETTERS Teachers and programs made high school memorable
Deckerville senior has made many friendships
There were many memorable experiences as a Deckerville High School student. During my time at DHS, I have made meaningful friendships that I hope will last a lifetime. The supportive educators at DHS go above and beyond to assist in our learning abilities in any capacity. The foreign exchange student program has culturally diversified my high school experience. My involvement in National Honor Society has helped me build on the six general qualities every member should have: Respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring and citizenship. My experiences at DHS have made me who I am and I am honored to be the class of 2019’s valedictorian.
The teachers and high school programs in my high school career have made me experience memorable. I have enjoyed being in the National Honor Society because of the time I spent helping others. The teachers have helped me when I need extra help and I greatly appreciate their dedication to the school. I will always remember all the fun field trips and events I have had with my fellow classmates, like going to Mackinac Island. Rachel Thompson Deckerville Salutatorian

Senior shares powder puff memory
While at Lakers, the memories that were created will stay with me forever. Although there were many great moments, my senior year powderpuff game was definitely one of my favorites. The night of the game it was pouring down rain, which may sound like it would ruin the night, but it only made it more fun. We were slipping and sliding around, catching raindrops in our mouths, and laughing hysterically at how my friend Katlin’s soaking wet hair was steaming from the warm air. The cherry on top was that that we won the game. I will forever be thankful for the memories I have made while in high school. Karly Cunningham Laker Senior Class President
She will remember homecoming week There have been numerous memorable moments that my classmates and I have shared throughout the years. One memory that sticks out to me the most is homecoming week our senior year. The entire week was full of Laker Pride, and playing a victorious game of powderpuff football in the pouring rain was definitely something we will never forget. Meleah Timmons Laker Senior Class Secretary
The bus rides were memorable for this senior Throughout my 13 years at Laker schools, I have shared many countless memories with my classmates. Some of the most memorable experiences I have are from junior high class trips, especially the Washington D.C. trip. One moment I remember in particular was the whole class jamming out to songs on the bus ride. It is memories like these that I will remember long after I leave Lakers. Heather Rooney Laker Senior Class Vice President
Senior won’t forget Camp Leelanau Throughout these many years with my senior class, we have had countless memories. The trips up to Camp Leelanau and cheering one on another at sporting events are just a couple of the many things that we will remember as we move on to the next chapter in our lives. Even though we are all going our separate ways, our memories are something we will always share. Halee Robinson Laker Senior Class Treasurer

The event that changed my life forever was in the third grade, when I received a B+ in math. I felt so guilty that I vowed never again to get anything less than an A+. True to my third grade word, I have managed to complete high school with an outstanding 4.3444 GPA. Yet in hindsight, that academic motivation and commitment to studies was just a small aspect of what I learned from my experience at Laker High School to help prepare me for my future. More than just studying, my years at Lakers taught me how to critically think. Whether it was writing about climate volatility and its effect on food security in the impoverished country of Haiti for the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute, making Rube Goldberg machines in physics, or finding out how many Happy Meals I could purchase from saving money on gas in Mr. Grifka’s algebra class, Laker classes and extracurricular activities forced me to problem solve and interact with the world beyond flashcards and textbooks. Lakers and its instructors also fed my creative side. For example, most English classes would only have students read, write papers, and maybe present. But through my English teachers Mrs. Stoyka and Mr. Rea, I was able to engage in my passion for going beyond the status quo. This included: making dioramas of a dragon’s cave for Beowulf, and dressing up as Death himself for a video essay on The Book Thief. Lakers taught me how to differentiate myself from others, and
I will always strive to make myself stand out through creativity. My high school also turned my previously introverted self into a socialite and leader. Thanks to the Laker FFA Chapter and my advisors Don Wheeler and Haley Schulz, I found confidence to take up new challenges and step out of my comfort zone. I now constantly try to take on new opportunities, meet new people, serve my community, and lead others. Along with this leadership growth, Lakers provided me with an environment where I could be myself. From singing FFA inspired remixes of my favorite Disney songs for officer speeches, to talking about upcoming video games and movies during seven-mile runs for cross country, to hypnotizing my peers in preparation for a class speech; Lakers has allowed me to feel confident with expressing who I am. Finally, Lakers taught me what it means to be a part of a social family. Whether it was having my cross country teammates and I push each other to keep running on days of 20 mph wind, huddling together with my team and screaming “GO SCIENCE!” before a Science Olympiad meet, touring the mall with my FFA teammates in between sessions at state conventions, or sitting in the bleachers with the student body to cheer on our football team, I always felt supported by and connected with my fellow students. Lakers has set a high bar for how to make meaningful relationships with others, and no matter where I go, what I do, or who I come to associate with, I will always be a Laker. Andrew Smith Laker Valedictorian
