Pigeon Band Shell reopens for 2021, marking 30 seasons TROY A. BRUZEWSKI troy.bruzewski@hearstnp.com The 30th season should actually be the 31st. But due to the pandemic halting events for 2020, the Pigeon Band Shell is taking its second attempt at a 30th season this summer when it resumes hosting an annual schedule. The Band Shell Committee recently confirmed the venue is resuming operations starting in June, hosting musicians and other entertainment acts. “This is the 30th season, but it should be our 31st,” said committee chairman Neal Eichler. “We talked last April and decided the way the projections looked, it wouldn’t be a good summer. But things are looking better now.” A year after the pandemic outlook originally forced the cancellation of last year’s schedule, the committee felt more confident in assembling one for this year. “In March, when the vaccines really started to pickup, we decided if it was at the point that all adults would have access to the vaccines by the end of May, we decided to go with it,” Eichler said. Fortunately for Eichler and the rest of the committee, booking entertainment for the 2021 season was as simple as making follow-up

Eichler said the social distancing has eliminated the option of hosting an event at a high school auditorium if rain makes an outdoor performance impossible. “With an outdoor area, we would usually have 200-300 people and that is spacedout well,” he said. “But if we can’t hold the event due to inclement weather, we just won’t have it.” The 2021 season kicked off June 17 with a performance by the Detroit Motion Band. TROY A. BRUZEWSKI troy.bruzewski@hearstnp.com For the first time since its inception, the Porch Fest in Port Austin is more than a one-day event. In this sixth edition of the annual event, a lead-in act will perform the night prior to the day of the festival. Musician Olivia Dear will kick off the usual one-day festival with a performance on Friday, June 25, from 6-8 p.m. at the Farmers Market Stage. Dennis Hafeli, an organizer of Porch Fest, said the decision to have an opening act of sorts was made possible by Dear’s connection to the Upper Thumb. “Olivia has been a summer resident of Port Austin for several years and her grandparents live here,” Hafeli said. “She was available to play on Friday night so we thought about using a kickoff on Friday night.” The remaining 35 acts will perform as usual on the final Saturday of June — this year on the 26th — at various locations around town from 1-5 p.m. Many will also perform at local pubs and restaurants Friday and Saturday evenings. Last year, Porch Fest was one of the annual events that didn’t take a year off due to the pandemic and therefore was among the dwindled list of community activities available for area residents. Hafeli said those factors created a balance in attendees, drawing more people eager for an outdoor activity and helping account for those who stayed home for safety. In addition, a majority of the scheduled acts also were willing to perform. “This was one of the few things that went on last year,” he said. “Originally we signed up 33 acts and we went with 27. Five or six decided they wanted to play it a little safer, but I thought the turnout looked pretty normal.” Along with the addition of a Friday performance, this year’s Porch Fest also features event souvenirs for the first time. Full details on this year’s performers and an event map are available for viewing at portaustinmusic. com. The site is loaded with information about the event,

Caseville geared up for Ribstock Festival’s return SCOTT NUNN scott.nunn@hearstnp.com Following a one-year sabbatical due to the coronavirus pandemic, organizers are gearing up for the Caseville Chamber of Commerce’s annual Ribstock Festival June 25-27. “No one could have anything last year,” chamber office manager Michelle Louwers said. “There was nothing we could do.” This year’s event features the usual blend of an amateur rib cook-off and a professional rib cook-off by vendors from around the community. Louwers said to simplify the purchasing process from the professional vendors, attendees purchase $1 tokens on Saturday. Louwers said this allows the chamber to handle the cash transactions and lessen the burden on vendors, many of which are short handed due to employee shortages. “Normally, we sell tokens on Saturday and people can go to each place to redeem them,” Louwers said. The costs for the ribs, and variety of other foods like french fries, baked beans, coleslaw and more are set by the vendors and vary, Louwers said. In addition to the abundance of food, the event also features live country music Friday and Saturday night from 7-11 p.m. There are also other fan favorite activities like volleyball, cornhole tournament, line dancing lessons and more. Louwers said attendees bring their own beverages and chairs, and pack in to Caseville County Park for the concerts. The amateur rib cook-off features cash prizes, with amounts being decided based on the pool generated by entries. Louwers said entry into the contest is $30 with cooks supplying their own ribs, seasonings and sauce. The professional rib contest is divided into two categories — people’s choice and judge’s choice — while the amateur contest is limited to judge’s choice.

Lauwers said as soon as the chamber and community realized it had the green light for this year’s event, everyone was excited. “It means a lot for our businesses,” Louwers said. “It brings in thousands of people for the event.” Louwers said the economic benefit for the event spills over to other communities in Huron County in the form of lodging. “It seems like everyone loves ribs,” Louwers said. “They also love the concerts and the music too.”

RICH HARP For the Tribune Since 2017, Music at the Beach has been an integral part of summer festivities in Harbor Beach. Harbor Beach Community Promotions Director Kelly Jo Osentoski said the live music event has been well received by locals and visitors. “We wanted to bring something for the people to do on Friday evenings,” Osentoski said as she explained the origins of the event. Unlike most events last summer during the pandemic, the live music event was able to continue and draw good crowds. Audiences last year were slightly smaller than in years prior, but families continued to come to these Friday night events, sit socially distanced, and enjoy great nights of live music. Music at the Park is located at Lincoln Park near the city’s beachfront. There are numerous picnic tables available for use. Usually, the crowds are much larger than the number of tables available so it is advisable to bring lawn chairs to the event. Osentoski said those attending are welcome to bring food, beverages, and coolers. The park’s concession stand will be open for those who wish to purchase hot food and treats. For family members not interested in the music, Lincoln Park also has several things available for a fun night, including a large, nearly new play-scape offering an excellent place for child to play. Others can walk the beach front or go out on the large city dock to enjoy the sites. In past years, numerous visitors have been seen walking around the attractive park while listening to the music in the background. This year, the city has added an additional night of Music at the Beach, bringing the total to six nights of music. The annual event kicks off on Friday, June 26, 2021. Music is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and run until approximately 11 p.m. The last night for Music at the Beach will be Friday, August 13, 2021. The city intends to end the Friday night event before the start of high school football. This year’s Music at the Beach dates and bands include: June 25 — Even Steven July 2 — Weekend Comeback July 16 — Detroit Social

Fourth of July events returning to Upper Thumb Events planned for Port Hope, Port Austin, Caseville, Cass City ROBERT CREENAN robert.creenan@hearst.com The Upper Thumb’s Fourth of July festivals will return to their festive selves this year after some were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The returning festivals feature an expanded lineup of events taking place from Friday to Sunday, with parades and fireworks going off at several of them. Port Hope Port Hope’s Fourth of July weekend starts off on Friday morning with an antique tractor show that opens up at 8 a.m. and a tractor pulling competition that starts at 6:30 p.m. These will also be available on Saturday with the show starting at 8 a.m. and the competition at 1 p.m. Saturday will feature a hot breakfast where veterans can eat free, a 5K run, a book sale, tug o’war, a pickle ball tournament, a petting zoo with pony rides, barrel train rides, and a chicken BBQ. Fireworks will go off at dusk. All these activities will take place at the Port Hope Activity Center at 7840 Portland Ave. Sunday will feature the parade going through the downtown area starting at 2 p.m. Melinda Erffmeyer of the Port Hope Activity Center said that the only activity that went on last year was fireworks and that about 2,000 people would normally show up for these activities. “We’re following all the guidelines and it’s mainly an outdoor event,” Erffmeyer said. This will also be the first the activity center will be asking for sponsorships to support the different events. There are four different categories, bronze, silver, gold, and platinum, that come with different benefits and levels of exposure for the sponsors. The Port Hope Area Historical Society will also be hosting an outdoor flea market over the weekend at 8016 Portland Ave. Admission is $4 daily and a 20 foot by 20 foot costs $20 per day. Those interested can call 989-4284838 for more information. Cass City Cass City’s Freedom Festival will return after a oneyear absence with events all over the village. It starts on Thursday, July 1 with a golf tournament at Rolling Hills Golf Course, bingo at the
Lion’s Pavilion, and the Pageant at Rotary Park, where trophy’s will be given out to participants in nine different categories Friday will feature a craft show, a kid’s block party, a cornhole tournament, home run derby, classic car show, an ice cream social, and The Leftovers performing at Rotary Park. Saturday’s events include the 42nd annual Grand Parade, the Hills and Dales 8K run, an airplane and helicopter display and demonstration, a three-on-three basketball tournament, a kids area with inflatables and carnival games, a show from Rosco the Clown, a tractor pull competition, and fireworks at dusk. Cass City Chamber of Commerce administrator Judy Keller said that craft show vendors are spaced far enough apart and outdoors, with hand sanitizer located in different areas of the parks. “Typically, we have about five or six thousand people, maybe more it depends,” Keller said. “I don’t know what to expect this year, because I don’t know how people will feel being next to each other on the parade route.” Those interested in participating in the different events can call the Cass City Chamber of Commerce at 989-872-4618. Caseville Caseville’s fireworks display will return this year, going off on July 3 when it gets dark. It’s the only Fourth of July event happening in Caseville since it is between the Ribstock and Cheeseburger festivals. Michelle Louwers of the Caseville Chamber of Commerce said that the fireworks will be launched from their normal spot by the Caseville breakwall, having been launched last year by the Wooded Island Bar and Grill. “We had the beach closed last year, now we can move it to where we always had it,” Louwers said. The fireworks can be viewed from anywhere in Caseville, with Louwers saying they can be seen as far away as Sand Point and Oak Beach County Park. Port Austin Port Austin will hold its annual Fourth of July parade again at 1 p.m. on July 4. Fireworks will follow at desk. The village will also have its Village Green shops open from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and its farmers market open on Saturday morning.

Harbor Beach Maritime Festival returns for three fun-packed days SCOTT NUNN scott.nunn@hearstnp.com The excitement for this year’s Harbor Beach Maritime Festival is ever mount-

for the Harbor Beach Truck Show held a few weeks ago, his anticipation has grown. “We got a little taste of it last weekend when we did the truck show,” Wruble said. “It looks like people were eager to participate in an event like that because they came out of the woodwork.” Wruble said the maritime festival is an event chucked full of mini events and based on the list of events slated over three-plus days, Wruble isn’t speaking out of line either. The event kicks off July 7 with a 5k Walk/Run event from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. On the following day there’s a book sale at the community house and a bocce ball tournament on the beach. On Friday, July 9 events ramp up even more

with another book sale, a cornhole tournament and a lighted boat parade. The events more than double on Saturday with exciting additions like the Corteva Agriscience Jet Ski Racing Tournament, a volleyball tournament, craft show, children’s bike and pet parade, kids carnival, hot dog eating competition, frog jumping and more. Closing the night out is live music by Jedi Mind Trip and the Maritime Fireworks Display. The festival doesn’t pack up after the fireworks, with an all day car show and craft show Sunday, along with the Zion Fish Fry and the Dueling Pianos. Registration to participate in some of the events — like the bocce ball tournament, volleyball tournament, cornhole tournament and jet ski races — remains open on themaritimefestival.com website, so the possibility for the event to grow continues. Wruble said the maritime festival wouldn’t be possible without the staff at city hall, like Kelly Jo Osentoski, along with the many volunteers that work on it. “We have numerous people that work on it constantly,” he said. “A lot of work goes in to it. A lot of volunteers, if it wasn’t for those people this wouldn’t happen.” Wruble said the group was trying to put the finishing touches on another event they are hopeful to add to the schedule — lawnmower pulls — but it was too early to confirm as of print. Wruble said the event is a big draw for Harbor Beach, which undoubtedly benefits the area businesses. However, he said it is also an excellent community event than even his extended family puts on their calendar year after year. “It will be huge,” Wruble said. POINTE AUX BARQUES LIGHTHOUSE
The original Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse was constructed of stone taken from the shore of Lake Huron in 1848. The keeper’s house and separate tower were located on a three acre clearing hacked out of the dense wilderness. By 1857, the ravages of shoreline weather and a fire in the interior of the house created the need for a new structure. The new keeper’s house and attached 89-foot tower were built of the finest brick available. The light is still an active aid to navigation, making Pointe aux Barques one of the oldest continuously operating Lights on the Great Lakes. In 1875, a Class A lifesaving station was constructed 300 yards south of the lighthouse. It was the first lifesaving station opened on the Great Lakes. The 62 year history of the station credits over 200 rescues to this station and its brave crews. The Thumb Bottomland Preserve surrounding Pointe aux Barques contains 105 known wrecks, reflecting the danger posed by shoals surrounding Pointe aux Barques. The Pointe aux Barques keeper’s house and tower have been completely restored and contain historical artifacts from a bygone era. The museum is open to the public free of charge and donations are appreciated to help fund the society’s projects. The Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse is located six miles north of Port Hope off M-25 on Lighthouse Road in Lighthouse County Park. Visit www.pointeauxbarqueslighthouse.org or call Bill Bonner at 989-428-3035 for more information.
